השנה- 1941. המקום – עיירת נופש בהרי הקרפטים. המלחמה קרבה. במרכז הרומן החדש של אהרון אפלפלד: היתום קוטי, נער חסון וכבד פה, הנאבק עם גמגומו; אהבתו הגדולה – אמו החורגת, הצעירה והנאה; ודמות אב – רודולף, רב סמל לשעבר, אדם קשוח וישרן, שגינוני הצבא טבועים בו. עיירת הנופש מאוכלסת רובה יהודים, חלקם סוחרים ומקצתם סוחרי בהמות. סוחרי הבהמות הם אנשי טבע, אנשי כבוד, שהרי הקרפטים הגבוהים לימדו אותם קשיחות ועמידה על הנפש. האורחים, לעומתם, הם יהודים עירוניים, מתבוללים, שמחלת הדיכאון מענה אותם שנים. הרופאים הרגילים לא הועילו להם, והם באים לבקש מרפא אצל הצדיק המקומי העיוור.

המלחמה מגיעה לכאן לא בדמות צבא כובש. שני קצינים גרמנים בעזרת כמה שוטרים מקומיים משתלטים על המקום, רודים ומתעללים בתושביו. שלא כמו במקומות אחרים, התסיסה כאן רבה. סוחרי הבהמות לא מוכנים לשאת את ההשפלה וקמים על משפיליהם.

בכור זה בוחן אפלפלד את האהבה על כל גווניה: החושית, הדמיונית, וזו ההופכת למסירות נפש למען הכלל. לפרקים, דווקא בזמן של מבחנים גדולים, מסיר האדם את המחיצות בין הפרט והכלל וקונה לו חירות חדשה. זהו הספר הדרמטי ביותר שכתב אהרון אפלפלד. הפעם יוצאים גיבוריו של אפלפלד מחביונם אל חיים שיש בהם תעוזה, וכתמיד, התיאור מדויק, חד ובה בעת כובש את הלב.

AHARON APPELFELD is the author of more than forty works of fiction and nonfiction, including Until the Dawn's Light and The Iron Tracks (both winners of the National Jewish Book Award) and The Story of a Life (winner of the Prix Médicis Étranger). Other honors he has received include the Giovanni Bocaccio Literary Prize, the Nelly Sachs Prize, the Israel Prize, the Bialik Prize, the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize, and the MLA Commonwealth Award. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received honorary degrees from the Jewish Theological Seminary, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and Yeshiva University.

Expedição ao inverno

Nunca tinha lido nada do autor, e foi muito legal entrar em contato com o livro de Aharon Appelfeld. O começo do livro já me conquistou, mas depois ficou um pouco na mesma e depois ficou muito bom hehehe. E o mais legal foi ler o posfácio e entender os porquês de cada coisa.

Neste livro entramos em contato com a vida de Kuti, que perdeu a sua mãe quando ele nasceu, Kuti cresce com o pai um caixeiro viajante que tem como segundo companheira Hanna.

Kuti ama Hanna de forma singular, Kuti é um menino gago assim como Moshe Abeinu (Moisés) eles vem numa aldeia localizada em uma montanhas perdida nos Cárpatos orientais. Cárpatos é uma cadeia montanhosa da Europa Oriental que se encontra disposta em arco e atravessa a República Checa, a Eslováquia, a Polónia e a Roménia.

A montanha atrai judeus deprimidos que vem em busca da cura dos seus males, eles se hospedam num hotel no qual Kuti trabalha para se consultar com o “homem milagroso” que sempre dá as mesmas instruções, aprender as letras hebraicas e transcreve-las.

Tudo isso no período da Segunda guerra mundial, aliás todo o livro é uma tentativa do autor (que escreve em hebraico) de entender seu próprio mundo, a germanização dos judeus versus apego às tradições judaicas. Aharon nasceu em Czernowitz em 1932 e viveu na pele esses conflitos. O livro retrata a atmosfera de desorientaCão em que viveu a geração de seus pais com a chegada dos invasores nazistas.
