“i’ll show you a life that’s way more interesting than gaming and napping all day!”
after the first season of blue lock i became obsessed.
it’s dramatic, full of humour and has one of my favourite tropes: a found family. i love and appreciate that blue lock doesn’t fixate on the teamwork aspect of football as the only method to winning, but rather the ego and individualism of each player. it’s harsh and bloodthirsty.
it was so easy to fall in love with seishirou nagi.
a classic anime character—a lazy genius who finds everything tiresome and would rather video game and nap all day, if he could. my true spirit animal!!
it was refreshing seeing everyone’s entrance into blue lock from reo and nagi’s perspectives, but witnessing reo and nagi’s budding friendship and the formation of the ‘dream team’ in more detail is an absolute and wholesome experience. this volume is fast-paced however manages to remain entertaining despite it.

˖⁺‧₊♡ pre-read review ⋙ re-entering my manga/light novel era. i love seishirou nagi so much!!! he's such a mood.
The same story as in Blue Lock manga but from Nagi’s perspective? I kind of love it. Nagi is definitely one of my favorite characters—maybe not quite on the same level as Isagi, Bachira, Kaiser, Princess, or Aiku, but at this point, I’ll devour anything Blue Lock related.
Nagi is just the kind of character that I think is impossible not to like. He just wants to live in peace, eat bread, play games, and retire early to do his own thing. But anyway, I can’t wait to dive into his perspective and see more of my favorites here.
nagi and reo are two of my favourite characters, so of course, this was amazing i just loved seeing their perspective from their time in the first selection and hopefully, we'll see more of it also the more i read about these characters, the more i realise how much alike me and nagi are
while i was reading, i compared the english and russian translations, and i have to say — the russian one feels way more fruity.
also. since when is nagi’s story considered queer? INTERESTING. like! i know my boys ain’t straight but i’ve never seen it tagged like this before. anyway, whoever did this, thank you!

I liked reo and nagi from probably the beginning so I was overjoyed when I found out about this. I loved reading about the first selection from their perspective since I find them to be quite different and at the same time relatable. I mean I feel like nagi on most days...and am in love with Reo😂
Reo and Nagi are by far one of my favorite pairings from Blue Lock.
Don’t get me wrong—individually, both Reo and Nagi are interesting characters too. At least, they each have some of the more compelling motivations for why they play soccer.
But, their dynamic both in and off the field is by far what makes them fascinating.
And, in this spin-off series, we get to learn more details about Reo and Nagi’s history and how they came to be a duo. Though we see glimpses of their past in the main series and their “soccer breakup” is a cornerstone of the series’ drama, their relationship is understandably not a main focus. So, it’s nice to get to see more of how their relationship developed over time.
Though it’s implied in the main series that they get along, we don’t really get to see a lot of their more personal interactions. Here, though, it’s very apparent that Reo and Nagi have a strong “opposites attract” relationship. Their personalities—though opposite—are actually quite compatible. They challenge but also really balance each other.
In the main series, it’s sometimes unclear how much the two genuinely like each other versus how much they find the other useful. But, this story clarifies that the two are friends and do have a distinct fondness and appreciation for each other. Nagi—who is often depicted as rather cold and apathetic in the main series—especially gets some dimension to his character here.
It’s clear that there is a kind of mutual affection and consideration between the two.
Which, as a reader, is nice to see.
While I really enjoy Blue Lock as a series, it’s beholden to its shonen roots. Match-ups and power plays take center stage while character growth and relationship development often takes a backseat. Which, isn’t to say that the series doesn’t have either of those latter things. But, it’s not a primary focus.
So, I really love a spin-off series that makes character growth or relationship development a focus—and, so far, this series is doing that. Which means I’m definitely looking forward to reading more.
Knowing the trajectory of Reo and Nagi’s relationship, I’m definitely a little concerned though. It was devastating enough to read about their schism the first time around. I imagine it’d be devastating to read about it any greater detail.
Alas, though.
It wouldn’t be a very ReoNagi story without a bit of suffering thrown in~
I've noticed a lot of buzz recently about the Blue Lock anime, so I was very interested in reading this spin-off series. As a newcomer, I didn't find anything difficult to understand, and I enjoyed jumping into the Blue Lock world. I can't wait to read more!
The two protagonists both felt relatable for their opposing outlooks on life. One is driven to achieve his goals, while the other is laid back and just wants to nap! This laid the foundation for interesting dialogue between the two characters, and I'm looking forward to seeing how their friendship develops. The artwork was also dynamic and engaging, which suited the soccer theme well. I enjoy competition/knockout type stories, so this was fun to read.
I would recommend this to fans of Blue Lock, as well as anyone interested in trying out sports manga. Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for providing this e-ARC for an honest review.
A spin-off of the original series that tells how the soccer talents came to be selected (I presume; I haven’t read the original.) High-schooler Reo Mikage wants to win the world cup more than become what his rich father wants him to be. With his dad’s money and connections, he starts a soccer club in his school, and recruits the best talent he can find, Seishiro Nagi, in the team too. Too bad the other boy has no interest in anything else than sleeping and playing video games.
Both boys are talented enough to garner the interest of an eccentric who selects 300 boys to compete against each other to become the best striker in Japan. No second bests accepted. Nagi isn’t even a little bit interested, but Reo talks him into it.
The first volume is fairly short and barely gets into the selection process. Those who have read the original know who will make it, but my guess is Reo and Nagi. The boys were an odd pair, but Reo’s determination to become the best made for Nagi’s lack of it, and to his credit, Nagi was willing to try so that Reo could shine. Art was airy and good. Recommended for the fans of the original series and those into football manga.
I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Nagi has the type of personality that irritates but also interests me. I really do enjoy him as a character, though, so I'm excited this focuses on him! I'm really enjoying it so far.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing an eARC for an honest review!
I LOVEDDDD reading this. As Nagi’s self proclaimed number 1 fan, I was so excited to see that the first volume of Episode Nagi was finally getting an english translation!! It was great to get inside his mind a little more and see what his journey at the beginning of Blue Lock was like.
I think that the fact that this thing was my biggest motivation to ace my exams during my first ever semester at the university is the peak of me reaching adulthood.
(I legit had a paper that said „If you're done with all your exams on first try you will be able to buy Episode Nagi manga. “)
I think this will be my go-to method of passing my exams because the success rate is 100 % so far and I got a new manga! Forget all those time consuming effective study methods, this works much better (I kinda forgot to mention that I indeed used several effective study techniques but this is about Episode Nagi, not them).
Anyway, I'm just stunned by how beautiful it is. It's so gorgeous, I love it. I will skim through it everytime I'm feeling down because of uni because nothing makes you feel better than your favorite emotional-support gay couple (please feed my delusions and let them be together).
There's no straight explanation for literally anything that leaves their mouths when Nagi and Reo are together. And I love that, please continue.
Also every character is such a drama queen and I'm here for that.
