The Devils' Trials #2

Heist of Haures

Rate this book
Gluttony may as well have taken a bite from Octavia's heart.

There's little time to grieve the outcome of the Gluttony trial as she enters Invidia, a city of barely contained envy, where everyone wants what the other possesses. The competitors of the devil's trials are sent belowground with no special treatment and tasked to play Envy's favourite game, Heist of Haures.

Below the city streets new friends are found in unlikely places, and danger follows her like a shadow. All while Octavia attempts to steal a piece of the old world from Invidia's elite to secure her safety. However, in a city so covetous nothing ever goes to plan, and Octavia finds herself on a path to steal from the very heart of Envy's most treasured collection.

It might just be the deadliest heist of her life.

Stephanie has always loved reading, and started writing as a high-schooler with a penchant for fanfiction. She spent years on role play forums with other writers and there's a hidden USB in her house full of finished but never to be published projects.

In 2022 she released her first book, Feast of Samael, and hasn't looked back since.

Moral Dilemma

Octavia once again finds herself not only trying to win another trial but staying alive as well. No matter where this girl goes, danger is close at hand. Octavia can only depend on herself after being separated from her frenemies and placed on a team with people who despise her in the Heist of Haures.

Envy's trial really brought out the green eyed gremlins. When dealing with Gluttony and Pride the only thing Octavia and friends dealt with was overindulging and an exaggerated sense of worth but in the house of Envy everybody was faced with Jealousy, Bitterness, H8ted, Rage, the overwhelming desire to be who they couldn't be and have what they couldn't have.

As a natural thief Octavia went into this trial believing she had the upper hand until she realized she didn't. With enemies at every turn, monsters lurking in the night and having no one in her corner Octavia is faced with the realization that she was on her own competing in a trial that very well may claim her life.

2023:
I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this review.
What a great continuation of The Feast of Samael! The author has done a wonderful job of bringing through the character's personalities with small changes based on their experiences. These books do a fantastic job of putting you through the emotional ringer; making you feel all the feels as if they were your own. It was much more apparent with this book and dealing with feelings of envy. I love how many twists and turns there are, right when you think things are going along as they should and BAM. The main character has been knocked back again. I have to say the ending of this book left me a little wanting; a little unfulfilled. But I think it'll pick up straight away in number 3 and then won't feel like such an issue.

I received an ARC copy of this book.

I have to say after the first devil’s trials book I was skeptical how the second would turn out.

Having known the characters were all set up and the journey and adventure had well and truly begun I though it may be hard to follow up however, with Stephanie Gluck’s fantastic writing and character arcs she has once again managed to make me laugh at, worry about and care for characters and invest myself in the story being told.

I found these books almost by accident and can’t say I am disappointed, the second book in the series has a slow start but throughout you can feel tensions building and desperation for the characters as the title “Heist of Haures” suggests it is about a heist but with the twists and turns of the world created by Stephanie Gluck nothing is just that simple, even until the end of the book the outcome cannot just be simply guessed.

Read this series and support the author, you will not be disappointed!

This book was great continuation of the contestants remaining in "the Devil Trials". It has it all, great characterisation, awesome world building and dark magic systems being revealed.
The whole plot remains very unique and the suspense is UNpredictable - making it very enjoyable to read. So expect thrills&spills.
Remember this is a book series with several trials to get through yet.
Book Two - ARC Insights!

I love how it had smaller well connected subplots while also having a bigger storyline intertwined throughout.
It was refreshing to have a male-female friendships with no underlying lust - but im still open where even those relationships could go. There is overarching strong sense of inclusion and diversity in Stephanie Gluck books, I like that the character mix feels natural, their traits are very relatable.

There is a dark romantic subplot (even includes the Devil himself) but it remains simmering in this book, which I was a big fan of.
I feel the author is clearly rebuilding competitors (who knew her past) understanding of Octavia and therefore creating the credibility of us believing a likely love interest finding Octavia truly attractive(more than sex). Im sure Octavia craves touch. Octavia is an underdog and alone in every shape and form, truly mistrusted mainly from actions of her own hand ( read book1).

Octavia who not only jumped in headfirst as escape from a fate she mistakenly thought was worse than completing the trials. As harsh as this Devil trial is, as a competitor Octavia just rolls with it.

New friendships allow her to prove she can be relied upon and this time when making a mistake now Octavia owns it quickly to atone and fixes it in new ways.

Octavia addictive behaviours are redeemable but with a twist we read how that risktaking and pluck has changed how the game gets played by Octavia each time.

In effect that toxic addiction is rechanneling but dont doubt it still lurks in her darkness.
I loved that the author didn’t rush the enemies to lovers transition but instead allows time for the characters to slowly grow closer through mainly unhearld bravery by Octavia .
But the sensual steam is there, I predict possessive hot erotic elements will very well amp up in book 3.
cant wait for book 3.

-Summary-
Heist of Haures is the second book in The Devil's Trial series and the story picks up right after book one; Octavia and crew have just finished the trial of Gluttony and they are all coping in their own way. The second trial they are going to Invidia, the city held and governed by the angel Envy. To survive this trial they will work in teams to complete the heist of Haures - friendships will be tested and some break.

-Review-
I really enjoyed this book, maybe more than the first one. In book one there was a lot of focus on Octavia's gambling, but it's more of a passive addiction, as much as gambling is still a vice for her; it doesn't seem to be all consuming. We get to see more of her personality and watch as her character is put to the test and develops through the story.

If I had to make a complaint, I REALLY wish there was a nap to accompany these stories. I love books that have maps, they help the reader feel like they know the world a bit more. It also helps to gauge the immensity of the travel through the adventure.

I'm really excited to read book 3, I'm curious to see more about Octavia's relationship with Nic, you can feel a bit of a slow burn happening and that damn has to break again soon..

Thank you to Stephanie Gluck and BookSirens for giving me access to this ARC! Although I got this advanced copy for free, this review is voluntary and the opinions my own.

Heist of Haures- Stephanie Gluck

5⭐️

Did I plow through this book in half a day? Yes, yes I did, it is that good. I am both annoyed and happy, mostly I’m annoyed because of Margot, I don’t care what happened to you, you are selfish, manipulative and rude. Helina, you can take that attitude of yours and LEAVE, we don’t want you here anymore. And if you thought Gluttony was bad? wait till you meet Envy, pretty sure I prefer the devil over that man. Octavia, my gosh you are one strong gal, still kicking and fighting even if it feels useless. And I love that she doesn’t pretend to be a hero or hell, even a good person. Maybe she is, maybe she isn’t, that is up to you. Eadlin you are weirdly wholesome, like a grandma who loves you but shows it in a weird way.

As in the first book Stephanie absolutely killed it with the world building, the storyline and the characters, (wouldn’t mind if some of them died though *not mentioning any names* because I don’t like them as a person) The fact that I hate some of the characters are not because they are written bad, but because they are written so GOOD I feel like they are real people in my life you know? Anyway here is what to expect from this book!

💎 7 deadly sins

💎 Envy

💎 Betrayal

💎 Deadly trials

💎 Friends to Enemies

All I can say is you need to read this! And I need to start book 3 NOW before I go insane.

Thanks to Booksirens and Stephanie for this ARC! I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Heist of Haures was a great continuation to the Devil’s Trial series. I honestly like this world so much, the whole dystopian side of it is so good! I love most of the characters, they are so different from each other and they are definitely flawed but they compliment each other so nicely. I am still on the fence about if I like Octavia or not but the author did such an amazing job at creating this world and the other characters that even though everything is from Octavia’s point of view I still eat this story up. The author is truly amazing at writing because she created a very flawed main characters that is difficult to read about but she still did it in a way that makes the story so much more interesting and intriguing. I am so exited to see the next trials and learning more about my favorite characters.

I received this book as an ARC from Booksirens and my review is honest and voluntary.

This book was just as incredible as the first. The world building with each of the kingdoms of the 7 deadly sins is amazing, it was action packed, and the characters have a lot of growth. I'm curious about Samael wants from Octavia, he has been helping her the whole time. My favorite character this book was honestly The Crone. She was sassy, wise, and has a very interesting backstory. I hope we see more of her!

This book's trial took place in Envy's Kingdom and I wonder which sin will be next. Both trials so far have been brutal and it seems like Octavia is getting by the seat of her pants and I hope she'll continue to grow into her own character and be more independent. I cannot wait for the next book!

I binged this book in a little over a day, and now here I am at 6am writing a review immediately after finishing it. That alone should be pretty telling about how good this book was.

My review of the first book included my hopes that we'd get to see more character development for both Octavia and the rest of the cast, and this book did not disappoint. Tav's journey has been both heart wrenching and heart warming, and every step of the way has been wonderful to read. I was glad to see her improvements with her addiction, even if they were in small amounts. I also loved getting to learn about the other characters more deeply.

My one complaint is that the book currently has consistent typos and errors that pulled me out of the immersion to decipher sentences. The story itself is fantastic!

We see this story pick up where the first left off. After the horrific events surrounding Gluttony Octavia is struggling to come to terms with everything that has happened, but has to quickly get her mind right once the next phase of the trial begins. The premise of the trial is simple steal a piece of the old world and you are one step toward moving forward. However it is much easier said than done. As the competitors turn on one another, dangerous creatures roam the night, and Envy himself pose such a large risk who will survive? There is such an emotional depth to the characters that you feel for their suffering and celebrate their triumps. With such a mesmerizing writing style and amazing story line, this series is a must read.

I was provided with a copy of this amazing book and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Slightly better than the last book, really cool trial where people had to get gems for themselves, and people were stealing from others etc. the twist at the end is that they are judged not only if they got a price of alkeda, but if they were righteous and morally correct in doing so (e.g if they slit their teammates throat to get one they would fail) - others passed because they forgave teammates for betrayal etc. I also thought it was cool that those who failed didn’t just die, they served in envy’s army against the wrathlands (super cool, and gluttony eating the failed trial persons heart is reflective on his sin). The concept of the collection was quite cool too - keen to see how the war between envy and wrath goes!

"I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the author and BookSirens in exchange for a read and review."
...
This book marks the second installment in the Devil's Trials series. At the outset, Octavia mourns the loss of an extraordinary friend, a moment that deeply resonated with me due to the genuine connection they shared. As Octavia grapples with her grief, the rest of the crew appears to be wrestling with the emotional aftermath of their previous ordeal.

Fast forward to their arrival at Invidia. OMG! My heart sunk when they weren't grouped together. I was so scared for Nash and Octavia.

The scene where Helina defends Octavia took me by surprise – both Octavia and I were taken aback! Also, Octavia's persistent naivety is frustrating at times🤦. I mean, come on! The devil doesn't harbor affection for you; he's likely just using you for his own agenda.

I'm soooo interested in the backstory of the Crone. What history does she share with Samael🤔? And why does Samael have such a keen interest in Octavia?

I have countless unanswered questions. I hope they get answered in the next book! I highly recommend this book to dark fantasy lovers.

I thought this was a great follow up to the first book. It kept what I enjoyed from the first book, the characters and their complex relationships, and complicated it further throughout the story. I don’t really like how some of the chapters just change direction in the middle, and they would be best as just new chapters and I noticed a few misspellings sprinkled throughout (but this is an ARC, so I know it is not exactly ready for prime time). A riveting, fast paced and nail biting sequel to the highly enjoyable Feast of Samael, Heist Of Haurus was such an immersive follow up in this well written series.

The storyline was really gripping focusing on the House of Envy and the debauchery and evil within its very walls. Octavia is proving to be a strong, resilient character throughout this series and the end had a twist that had me shocked but in an interesting way to do with one of the male competitors in the second trial.

I cannot wait to dive into the third instalment of this epic, brilliantly written and executed series.

Envy... when you thought all you wanted to do was survive the trial and make it to the next one you feel Envy's power and all of a sudden you want to be the beautiful woman u just ran into. You crave the attention she is getting from Envy. If only that was your biggest problem.
In the midst of the Heist of Haures battle brings so many other life treating obstacles. The night time is one of many horrors and dangers that brings more than just the dark.
Will Octavia survive the trials against another sin, with the friends she has made along the way?

Heist if Haures by Stephanie Gluck is the second book in The Devil's Trials series and it had me just as hooked as the first! This time we joined the trial participants as they went to the land ruled over by Envy. They had a month to complete the game the Angel of Envy had given them, or die. Octavia and her group of friends had been separated, leaving her without any allies in the game as fate and chance throw her around. I look forward to the next book in the series!

Ok so I loved book 1 & all the world building but you gone and ripped out my heart & stomped on it so many times in book 2. WHY OH WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS TO ME?!? (Not regretting any sleep lost on this series!) This emotional roller coaster was epic! I got the full range-sad, scared, angry, hurt, melty heart feels-everything! Envy in all his a-hole glory was fabulous too. I am sad I have to wait for book 3! You got me in the edge of my seat!

After surviving the first trial Octavia’s story continues in a new city with a new trial and new challenges. The novel is fast paced and well written, and I love that I’m never too sure what will happen next.

Literally every character taking part in the trials are terrible human beings, including Octavia, the books are darker than what I imagined they’d be and there is no slow burn or spice. Yet… I can’t stop reading them, and when I’m not reading them, I’m thinking about them.

I really enjoyes this book from start to finish. The plot and every task the characters faced were really original and I particularly appreciated the pace that it sets, letting the characters really fell what they are going through. I always hate when books have this enourmous tasks and the characters are given 4 pages to deal with it.

Personally, I would have loved to have just a little bit more of romance to keep my attention glued to the book and keep the tension up, but thats because I am primarily a fantasy romance reader. Also bonus points for how complex the male characters are and not simply decorative, I am obssesed with them.

The Devil Inside

This is book 2 in the Devil’s Trials and we are swept away to another land where the Angel of Envy awaits.

The competitors are forced to fend for themselves and are placed in teams, which divide our pre existing group.

Octavia is forced into a lonely and dangerous position and desperation is embedded under her skin.

We find that not all the glamorous and envied citizens are as happy and fortunate as first appearances suggest.

Octavia goes to extreme measures to keep alive and her bond with Nik, Nash and Finlay is pushed to breaking point.

But is the Devil going to be her saviour or her demise?
