Imagine traveling through one of the finest trains in India on the picturesque western ghats and your co-traveler is a Yogi who is never tired of sharing his wisdom to questions that may sound mundane but have deep spiritual importance. Often life throws challenges in our way that raises many questions in mind but there is no one to answer. How about a yogi answering them?

Is it ok to compare ourselves with others? Is it ok to feel low if one has not been promoted for years? Is it fine to grieve the loss of parents/children? Is it ok for a child to stress about homework? Does appearance/look matter? Is it ok to divorce if a relationship is not going well? Is it ok to delay marriage or have a child for a career? Is money important? How to become a yogi?

So many questions crowd our minds daily. The majority of them go unanswered. But your search for an answer would end with this book as the author has tried to get the majority of them answered by a yogi. Each of the questions is relatable, originating from everyday life, belonging to situations that each of us goes through. The answers are logical, sensible, and unbiased. The language at the beginning and end of each of the chapters is poetic and thoughtful, with lots of wisdom, general knowledge, and humor in between.

This is yet another brilliant book from an author who has written some widely praised books like Deep in the dark (horror), The Lankan link (historical fiction), etc. Each of these books is a testament to the author's brilliant writing style and storytelling. For those who are dwelling on unanswered questions, this book will surely help answer some of those.

I have rarely come across authors who are adept in writing on all sorts of subjects and has the craft and skillset to be able to pen down on varied genres. Suman sir is one such rare soul who has again come up with a masterpiece.

There are many a times in our lives when we find ourselves in a deadlock kind of situation. When we dont have answers to some of the most obvious redundant queries which every individual faces at one point or the other. And this phenomenal work is an answer to many such questions.

Crafted from a point of view of a Yogi , how he thinks and would have acted in such dilemmatic situations is enchantingly presented . Through a train journey which author takes and encounter a Yogi as his co-passenger in the effortless conversations , we get to broaden our horizon and it feels blissful to have a sense of such deep and meaningful exchange of words.

The responses of Yogi are also not preachy but very practical and exhumes wisdom. They not only are sensible and unbiased but also very engaging. The visual delight which comes up with the pace of the book is unmatchable. Readers are easily able to imagine the places and the optimisic vibes of the Yogi and the author.

Overall an unputdownable read that can prove to be one of your best investments.

I didn't find the book, it found me

I bought this book some time back and read it in one night but due to over work I couldn't post a review. Well, I must say that this is the author's 6th book. I had read Author Suman Mukherjee's previous book Deep in the Dark which was an amazing collection of horror stories. So when I opted for this book I was sure about one thing that I won't regret reading it.

Cover: The cover picture, according to me is ascetic and it had a peaceful vibe. The color combination goes very well with the genre of the book.

Plot: If you love tea then you will love the starting of the book. As the story proceeds we get to know that the author is in Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station to board the Thiruvananthapuram bound Rajdhani Express. As his journey begins after sometime he sees the yogi. I loved the words he had used, "He had a white flowing beard, soft and neat and that made his face look cosy. He was wearing a saffron-coloured kurta and a dhoti, carrying a bag over his shoulders. Even without his saffron robes, I would have rightly guessed he was a yogi". The yogi is named Swami Shivananda and he lived in an Ashram.

Then we see how there conversation proceeds and the author was awestruck when he got to know about Swami Ji's qualifications. The author wanted to write a real piece so he asks Guru ji about it and he redirects him. There were questions that were very well prepared by the author which were beautifully answered him, answered would be the incorrect word he enlightened the author and (us) with so much detailed knowledge. Finally with conversations, general knowledge questions and detailed journey they reached their destination.

Swami Ji before leaving said the author that they will meet again and he will know that when he is ready.

My Verdict: I was amazed, intrigued and was trembling by the time I finished this book. I must say, I didn't find the book. The book found me.

Favourite Lines from the book:
● “Money can give us comfort but to be peaceful, one requires an entirely different set of skills.”
● “See, for any creative pursuit you need to be flexible. You cannot set a deadline here. If you were working in the corporate sector…I might understand. But not now. You should not work to meet deadlines. You should work towards meeting lifelines. Because the whole concept of creativity is to enhance life. Only then will the creative juices flow.”
● “You don’t get happiness for free, my dear. Everything comes with a price. If you can’t change your thought process, then don’t aspire to be joyful. Then, try to be happy with whatever you are getting in bits and pieces."
● “I don’t give any importance to gender. I see a human as a human not as male or female.”

We look forward to train journeys which make us experience the scenery spanning across the length and breadth of India where we get to sit and contemplate while the scenes whizzes by.
Imagine having an erudite Yogi as a co-passenger who not only makes the journey a memorable one but also changes the outlook of life.

The author, Suman Mukherjee had one such idyllic experience during his journey to Kanyakumari where he found himself sharing the coach with Swami Shivananda, a warm person who is tall in both outlook of life and physical attribute.

The author and the Yogi fell into effortless conversation where they spoke in length about importance of understanding oneself before venturing into challenging tasks, the importance of having the timing correct, and how spiritual course of actions will never lead anyone astray.
By the end of the journey our author became a richer person in terms of wisdom and inner fulfillment as the Yogi was kind enough to answer all the questions that plagues a human mind.

VERDICT
Pros:
1) The author has displayed marvelous intelligence by creating a self-help book through the prism of fictional storytelling. This is not your usual book which will preach you on various aspects of life. The author has presented a seamless conversation by asking tough questions to which the Yogi Shivananda has satirical and intellectual repartees. The easy camaraderie was very evident throughout the plot.

2) I found the tonality and quality of the narration to be incredible given that the plot flowed effortlessly from one station to another giving us a glimpse of various places as well as the thought-process of two sharp individuals.

3) The author touched upon some of the million-dollar topics like ‘Can Money Buy Happiness?’, awareness of our destination, the hormonal pull of love, to name a few which kept the premise very interesting throughout.

As a reader, I have read the works of Suman Mukherjee and as expected this book did not disappoint me as my expectations sky-rocketed after I read the Lankan Link and The N.G Code.

The meeting was not normal as it leads to some deep lessons and learning that we can apply in our daily life to lead a better life. The author deserves appreciation for questioning Swami Shivananda, who responds to them in plain language and by using relatable examples from everyday life which are easy to understand. The book serves as a ray of hope for all of us. This book is a good read for everyone but especially for younger generation because the younger generation is more stressed and tensed. This is a fantastic book if you read it with relaxed mind.

They say that Success is nothing if we are just not happy and no matter how much materialistic things we get, we will never get that feeling of contentment.

On the other hand, if we really are very happy, then there is no force on earth that will stop us from following us.

Hence the definition for success changes from one person to another and that is exactly what is shown in the book, Conversation With A Yogi by Suman Mukherjee.

Set in the backdrop of a beautiful train journey, the author narrates a tale of how a conversation with Swamiji changed his entire perception of life.

These conversations were something that will no doubt invoke a feeling of curiosity amongst all the readers.

And this feeling is definitely something that will force us to take action and take matters into our own hands and be the master of our own destiny.

Once you start reading this book with wonderful dialogue between the author and the Yogi while being on a wonderful journey on a train.

Being happy and confident has nothing to do with how much money, or worthy you are or what your success rate is.

A person can find happiness even in the smallest things and can survive even on the normal and economical commodities and utilities and can measure his/her success with the way they are able to handle their problems in their life.

That's why there is a saying that, ''God help those who help themselves'' and ''You are the master and maker of your destiny''.

Grab your copy today and enlighten your feeling of happiness.

How often do you let your daily life and your meetings and your conversations go on auto pilot; just letting them happen, not “really” expecting anything from them.
Have you ever had a conversation that rocked your world? One that was so deep and meaningful that it changed the trajectory of your life? I believe some of us are just ONE conversation away from a new future. We just don't know where that conversation will come from. We just have to be open to it.

This is one such meaningful story where the author shares his train journey. He met a stranger who is a Yogi and the conversation with him was so thoughtful and meaningful. That one conversation with a stranger changed his life completely and added meaning to his life. I liked the messages conveyed through this story. This book explains why effective talk can be truly transformative and provides a practical guide to having the kinds of conversations that will turn your life around. If you want to know deeper about life and its’ mysteries, read this book and find the real you and meet you.

This book is a must read for everyone. It is very simple and easy to read. Everyone has to go through some difficult phases in life but you should always look for the positive side and you must appreciate what you have. This book truly can help you to relieve stress and tension. I will definitely recommend this book.

The book starts with a journey of train when the author Suman Mukherjee boarding from Rajdhani train via Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari. He visits their every year. But this was something special and one of the most memorable experience for him.

On the journey he met a yogi who was not a simple person but a book full of knowledge and experience. He teaches the author about different life lessons. The true moral values about life.

Author asks several questions to the yogi and he perfectly answered each and every question.

Yogi taught every lesson in an elegant way. Some of them that I liked the most were:

1️⃣Eternal beauty is not forever. The beauty of heart and the humanity is most important.

2️⃣ Money can buy comfort but peace cannot be bought.

3️⃣ Fear of Failure is the biggest fear.

4️⃣ Pay attention on the process of learning not over the results.

These teachings are really helpful in our daily life.

The book was very beautifully written with very simple and easy language. The narration between Author and Yogi make the book different from other self- help books.

Highly Recommended to everyone.

Happy Reading!

The book is a captivating exploration of life's profound questions during a train journey from Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram. The narrative is centred around the author's opportune encounter with Swami Shivananda, his co-passenger in a first-class cabin on the Rajdhani Express.

The plot unfolds over a 42-hour train journey, during which the author engages in a dialogue with the yogi. The journey is not just a physical one but a spiritual exploration, taking readers through the picturesque landscapes of India while unravelling the mysteries of life.

The vivid description of the journey is a highlight, immersing the reader in the rhythmic cadence of the train. One commendable aspect is the attention to the Railway attendant, giving due weightage to a character often overlooked in such narratives. This adds a touch of realism to the story, grounding it in the everyday experiences of travel.

However, the book does have its shortcomings. The decision to pose numerous questions to the yogi without prior knowledge of the encounter feels forced and somewhat awkward. It raises the question of why the author chose this approach rather than letting the conversation unfold organically. The placement of questions at times also creates a sense of disjointedness. This might deter some readers, disrupting the natural flow of the narrative.

Also, the diversity of topics covered in the questions, while ambitious, may overwhelm some readers. A more focused selection of topics and in-depth discussions could have allowed readers to delve deeper, encouraging a more profound engagement with the yogi's insights.

It's important to note that ‘Conversation with a Yogi’ is not a typical narrative for those seeking a conventional story or self-help quotes. Instead, it caters to individuals grappling with unresolved questions about mundane aspects of daily life. Mukherjee's work catalyses introspection, offering a unique perspective on life's complexities. The book succeeds in sparking contemplation about life's inherent mysteries

BOOK REVIEW : Conversation With A Yogi by Suman Mukherjee

So, this is my first book ( sixth by number) that I have read by the author Suman Mukherjee and I can say that the author has done a commendable job in his writing.

So the story begins when author himself encounter with a Yogi on his train journey from Delhi to Thiruvananthapuram. Now , the book is divided into total 16 parts from ' Hazrat Nizamuddin' to Thiruvananthapuram. All the parts are really unique and put some prospective about life however I have liked the chapter of " Kozhikode" where Swamiji has put his critical perspective on modern education system which is really a matter of concerned.

The beautiful part is timeline of the story and the way of writing. Every character is so realistic that sometimes I became the partner in this beautiful 42 hours train journey. The story is enriched with a diverse topics and questions which makes it fast paced. The conversation with Swamiji is very deep and penetrate all the areas however in few cases more explanation could have been better. Here I would like to appreciate that the author has put the geographical importance of some places as well.

Lastly I would like to recommend this book to everyone specifically the young teenager and parents who wants to teach their kids and students about values and spiritual ethics.

Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review.
Must recommend.

CONVERSATION WITH A YOGI

"Who told you that life is not fiction? Life is the biggest illusion, the greatest fiction of all."

This book was one amazing journey for me. Yes, a journey that the author took us to, from Hazrat Nizamuddin to the beautiful Thiruvananthapuram.. Where he met the yogi, a man with the experience, that happened to us in real life, it would have been the most memorable of our lives.
Think about this, you under the aura of such an enlighten soul.. Thinking of it, gave me goosebumps...
Upon reading, i was so confused about why was it stated as fiction? So I talked to Suman and he explained that even though most of it happened to him for the real, some parts of it was his impeccable imagination. I wasnt able to tell the difference.

Now, how and what I liked?
I loved the spiritual enlightenment, the wisdom by the yogi. The calmness of his presence, that even I felt. The beauty of the route, described in such a picturesque way, that now I feel the need to travel...
What i think could be improved is, at the last few chapters I felt as if some of the parts were repeated... Other than that, i have no other complaints..

During his train journey from Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) to the beautiful place Thiruvananthapuram, the author Suman Mukherjee found himself sharing a coach with Swami Shivananda, a yogi.. The book focuses on his conversation with the Yogi where he gets to learn about some of life's greatest lessons.. The Yogi tells how the colour buisness isn't a serious issue but we people tend to make it more than what it really is - it highlights gender discrimination which is still happening in today's time. We get to learn how the inner experiences will always remain with us till the last moment of our life and beyond.. The language used was simple and rich.

" Stop fearing failure " - understand the fact that whenever you're climbing up anything, there's a force of gravity that will always try to pull you down. So the mind needs to be trained & developed in such a way that you can overcome the hurdles. This book is a must read that throws light into topics which we are well aware of but hardly pay attention to.. The book takes the readers on a journey filled with learning, knowledge and self-discovery. Highly Recommended to all.

The Author was traveling in a train to Kanyakumari and met a Yogi, in saffron. He becomes his only companion for the long 2 day journey to the destination.

In the course of the journey the author asks him multiple questions and the Yogi answers it so subtly.

Reading this book was an absolute treat to me. I've been leaning towards spirituality (not religion) more and more now. I lived how the Yogi explained life so easily and with real life examples that everyone can relate to. So, reading this book was an absolute pleasure. I loveeed it. The writing style was really engaging as well as entertaining. The language was super beginner friendly. The book was so well written that you can literally visualize it, every part of it.
