Monty and Onnie Newton, along with their young son Sirus, escape the violence of a city after the fall and find a house in the middle of a field that's perfect in every way...except that, the lights never turn off.
This started with feeling like "The Road" as our main characters are on foot and trying to survive a few years after the apocalypse, though barely getting by. I liked Monty, Onnie and Sirus early on and we get to see both some memories of when the world they knew ended and the mystery of this strange house through their eyes. I like that most of the people they encounter after they get to the house are decent folks (and I include the dog Fidget) and there is an obligatory bad guy so we can see how they deal with it. I did find it a little odd that they were not on top of aggressively scavenging the nearby farm house and other places, but just figuring there was stuff they could use that might be there. The lights were both a blessing, but at night a curse. Possibly, they could have found some opaque cloth or wood or something for blackout on the windows so they would not stand out like a beacon. The ending felt a bit rushed, but overall the writing was very good and I enjoyed this book.
Gripping story .... with an unexpected ending. If you like clean apocalyptic thrillers, without zombies and gore, this is for you. How well would you be surviving 10 years after an apocalypse? How would you react to finding an apparently safe haven? Would you let others in? Lots of dilemmas ... I had many wild theories as I listened, and some questions were never answered, but that was ok. I loved the character development, and the realistic struggles they faced. I received a free copy of this audiobook, with no obligation.
A. R. Shaw is a great author! She grabs you from the start, & pushes you like going down a ski course, twists, turns, hearts in your throats, until you finish, with a flourish of powdered snow! This book will stay with you long after you've read the last word! Liz from S. Jersey, USA
Took a chance here as I have never read any books by this author. I love dystopian fiction and have to say this is one of the best I've read. The characters are well rounded and the book just flows. A different take on the apocalypse than I've read before and puts me in mind of The Road. I can easily see this being picked up and adapted into a Netflix 8 part special. Well worth a read
A.R.Shaw has a fantastic story to tell. It is, as are the other books, well written with unexpected twists in the story. I would love to read what happens next, as my imagination took over when the story ended. Very enjoyable.
I hope there is another book in this series . I want to know how they get on ? This book was definitely different than other apocalyptic stories but I really enjoyed it .
Could not put book down. Read it in one sitting and enjoyed the twist and turns and development of characters. The end left me hanging; can't wait for the next book in series. I have never been disappointed or bored with any books written by A.R. Shaw.
