CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LET THESE NIGHTMARES TAKE YOU.
A man takes a gamble with drugs and gets more than he bargained for. A woman’s pregnancy goes terribly wrong. Two police officers battle a malevolent magician. Forbidden loves, crummy jobs, talking cigarettes, and more await in this strange and disturbing bouquet of horror stories. Are you brave enough to handle these vile visions?
Praise for Vile “Loaded with variety and drenched in absurdity, Vile Visions is a collection that's perfect for fans of freaky, fast-paced stories.” —Brandon McNulty, author of Bad Parts and Entry Wounds
“To Odell, rib cages pose no obstacle. Raw horror literature is delivered straight from the heart, every time.” —Moaner T. Lawrence, Author of The Great American Nightmare
“You can take solace knowing he’s in a better place than you,” Peter said. “As I told you before, I’m sorry. I understand why you did what you did and what you thought was waiting for you here. But Heaven is no longer the paradise you expected. Misery is all that’s left.”
Vile Visions: Horror Stories by Riley Odell genuinely lives up to the title!
I found the writing to be exquisite. It's descriptive, dark, and daunting, in all the best possible ways.
The stories are, in my opinion, horror done right—but also were, at times, very uncomfortable to read. However, I suspect that was the idea, because as Odell wrote in the introduction: “The world sucks.”
Some of my favorite Vile Visions include: GLITCH, INVERSION, BEES, SHOCK TREATMENT, and LONELY.
Ending this review with a quote I couldn't help but highlight:
“Another bus, too big to swerve, was coming along fast, and the two smashed together like two people kissing, an awful cacophony of crashing and breaking and tearing and grinding and squealing, all echoing thunderously in the dreary air. Then they rested, like sleeping lovers on a bed of glass and black pavement, beneath a darkening sky.” (from TAG, YOU'RE IT!)
This was a fun read. There were a few stories I ended up DNFing, so I couldn't have given it 5 stars, but the stories I did read were fantastic. Definitely would recommend.
