Well damn… I don’t know if I am happy that I’ve finished this amazing trilogy or if I am very sad that it’s officially over. Look, we all know that finales are very tricky. Can the author stick the landing and wrap everything up in a satisfying way? Well, I am happy to share that End of Days is easily one of the best finales I have personally ever read and it solidified my feeling that The Broken Gods trilogy deserves a spot on my all-time favourites list.
I am going to keep this spoiler-free for the entire series, because I want to convince as many people as possible to give this series a shot. So, without giving away any plot points and names of surviving characters, all I can say is that this finale was the perfect ending to this series. The tension and stakes had been rising from the start of book one and it was so satisfying to see everything explode in this final instalment. When I first met this cast of characters in book 1, I could never have expected that I would become this invested in their stories. We have been following their journeys over the course of these three books… and boy, what a wild journey it has been. The character development in this series is truly impeccable. Each character has a very distinct voice and I found every single POV we got to be incredibly compelling to follow. Some I loved, some I hated, some I hated to love and others I loved to hate, it was just an incredible reading experience. Also, there were definitely some very surprising character arcs and I love that the author took risks with the journeys of his characters. And don’t even get me started on the characters’ relationships in this series. From the familial relationships to the romantic relationships to the platonic relationships, they were all SO well-developed. Complex, messy, endearing, emotional and raw… I just absolutely adored it all. .
As for the plot itself, I was completely hooked the entire way through. Book 1 eases you into this world and introduces you to the various conflicts that this world and our characters are facing. Book 2 kinda slows down the pace, allowing the reader to really connect with the characters and understand how high the stakes exactly are… and also, REVELATIONS! And then in book 3 everything comes to a head and all our storylines are woven together masterfully. Because we have been following characters from all different sides of the conflict, the final showdown is incredibly intense. This series really plays around with themes of morality, so even though you (probably) aren’t rooting for the ‘bad guys’ to win, you can still sympathise or even empathise with them because you understand what drives them. No matter what happens, you can count on your feelings to get hurt… and I loved that. Now, I could start nit-picking and dock half a star for the fact that I felt like the final resolution felt a tiny bit rushed… but I honestly just don’t want to. The fact that I was so emotionally invested and had such an amazing time with this series completely overshadows that tiny quibble I had.
The final chapters of this book left me teary-eyed, which is something that rarely happens because apparently I have a heart of stone, lol. But this series caught me completely off-guard with its depth, complexity and emotional moments. There were also some very profound lines that really resonated with me. So yeah, that all just goes to show how incredibly invested I had become over the course of this series.
Needless to say that I adored this series. Aaron S. Jones has very quickly become an auto-read author for me, because I just fell head over heels in love with his writing and storytelling. I obviously highly recommend this series to essentially any fantasy reader, because there is just so much to love. Political intrigue, magic, high stakes, complex and morally gray characters, gods walking amongst men, prophecy, rebellion and just an incredible amount of twist and turns. Now, go read this series, I promise you won’t regret it :)
End of Days... an end of multiple character Arcs, this is a masterful ending and the character journeys have been an amazing ride with the writing making hardened near evil characters becoming the good guys and righteous. This trilogy blurs the lines of who is right or wrong and what is right in a way that is enjoyable to the reader.
I hate reaching the end of such great stories. I fell in love with Taakara and some of the characters from this book. I would lie if I said that I was not surprised with some plots resolution but overall I cannot find a lot of flaws in those books. The last one, End of Days, proved to be a great culmination of the whole trilogy. I felt sad when I finished the book - not because of the way Aaron decided to solve all Taakara’s issues but because I reached the end. I know I will get back to that world again, sooner or later, as it is a great story!
An excellent conclusion to the series and the revelations in it about what broke Takaara and how it must be fixed were very interesting. I highly recommend this series.
