Alice: Pick a Card #4

Alice in the Prison of Hearts

Rate this book
It was no secret that I had once been enamored by Kaeden Hart… But now, trapped in his kingdom, I cannot help but try to convince myself that the young king will enthrall me no longer, and any emotions I once had for him were merely an illusion, inspired by the man who I once thought him to be; because if he were even half the man I imagined he was, he wouldn’t have allowed this. The Kaeden Hart I knew would never allow me to be imprisoned on his estate, left to wander aimlessly with no escape. Even if it was to protect me from the Crown Court. More than that, he would hardly sit by as trial after trial took place at the once beautiful Hearts Estate, sentencing innocent people to death. That just didn’t make sense from the Kaeden I once loved. But then again, him insisting he cares for me doesn’t make sense either, nor does the Joker’s promotion to my guard, or the Crown Court’s insistence on watching me at every turn. But with a simple lie, I plan to set forth the motions to discover not only all of their secrets, but those of the long gone King of Cards.

Quote that sums up this book: “The Duchess is no Kingmaker, I can assure you of that. But I? I am a queen maker.”

Rating: 4 I’ll-be-your-prisoner stars!

Review:
After book three, I was really, really, really hoping this book was going to have such a good comeback for me…AND IT DID! I felt the wonderful nonsense and lovely madness came back front and center in this one, in a way that wasn’t quite as disconcerting as book three.

Because of B.A. Lovejoy experiencing a lot of issues with her releases and leaks, she has graciously asked everyone to keep the spoilers to a minimum. Therefore, my review will be pretty high-level, and we WON’T be talking about that ending….despite how much I want to!!!

Special thank you to Booksirens and B.A. Lovejoy for the opportunity to read this book for free. My opinions expressed below are honest and voluntary.

Before you continue, check out my reviews of the previous three books in this series here:

1. Alice in the Land of Clovers: Pick a Card, #1

2. Alice in the City of Diamonds: Pick a Card, #2

3. Alice in the Palace of Spades: Pick a Card, #3

What I liked about the book:
1. I LOVED ALL THE POLITICAL EVOLUTIONS!!! All the pieces we’ve been collecting from this book and the three prior came together so beautifully and in a way I didn’t expect!!! I loved how B.A. Lovejoy spread it out in such a maddening way, but then satisfied me like no other. Beautifully done. Can’t wait to see what other treats we have in store coming our way, like who really was behind Reginald’s death…

2. I loved reading about the court trials. They were super interesting and made absolutely no sense! I loved how the lawyers were the Walrus and the Carpenter, as well as this line:

“The Walrus’s skills were terribly ineffective, and the only talent he seemed to exhibit was for objecting, which he did loudly and often. Sometimes he even did it for no reason at all.”

- So, basically, Roison got Amber Heard’s lawyers!

3. B.A. Lovejoy writes Alice in Wonderland well. Her writing style and flow is 100% perfect for an Alice in Wonderland retelling. It feels as though you are picking up right where you left off in childhood and getting a delicious new adult twist, which I am all about with fairy tale retellings!

4. I loved that Alice kept getting pushed around for lack of thinking things through. She has consistently gotten away with everything in Wonderland because she is the famous “Alice”. This has always bugged me, and I was glad to see that she was reaping a bit of what she sewed.

5. I absolutely loved the interaction with the Queen of Hearts! I loved getting to see her in a conversation, as opposed to hearing what others had to say about her. She already gave us some information, but I know she has more to share!

6. Ok, if you’ve read my other reviews on this series, you know I would die at the feet of Kaeden Hart without so much as a second thought. He is the sweetest sweetie in the whole wide world, and I would gladly take him off Alice’s hands any day, afternoon, or night of the week.

With that said, he topped himself in this one! His not wanting to take advantage of what he thought were momentary lapses in Alice’s judgment and refusing to be intimate with her until she had worked through her madness with him and she had forgiven him, was primetime sweetheart. Mind you, not in a passive aggressive “You aren’t getting any until you get over it” way, but in a “Until I make this up to you, I don’t deserve you, and I won’t let you let me off the hook that easily” way.

Also, this:

“If you wish to be married, then I will marry you, but if you don’t, then that is just as well, I will still love you just as fervently whether or not a simple piece of paper is involved,” Kaeden said, reassuring me as his hand lingered within my hair, twisting a few locks around his fingers. “We’ll have children if you want them, a true mountain of them if that’s what you wish, but I would be just as happy with none, so long as I am still allowed even a moment of your time.”

7. My feminist heart continues to be happy with the lines in these books like these two:

“Your trial won’t go well if you stomp around like that, you know people find angry young women rather unappealing,” Thomas informed me. “It will look like I’m doing a bad job.”

“Yes, well, I’ll try to smile more so you can get promoted.”

-----
“You know you would be able to get far more if you batted your pretty little lashes and begged.”

Disgusting.

“I will bat my pretty little lashes to get a proper metal blade and then strike you with it.”

What could have been better:
1. After that cliffhanger, I need the fifth and final book ASAP!

2. B.A. always gives us additional scenes on her website after each book is released. I love Kaeden (obvs), but I hated his additional scene. We got a retelling of a scene from Kaeden’s viewpoint and it was not one that I cared to read from his viewpoint. Where was the book two scene of him getting her the best sword/outfit to ride into battle and then proceeding to dress her? Or any of their intimate scenes from book three? I was hoping for more here.

Uhm ❤️❤️❤️ hearts for Hearts i tell you! This book was beautifully paced and yet still had so much detail that I could hardly tear my eyes away from the page. I desperately need the 5th book yesterday! Alice is such an infuriating, wonderful character who I cant help but adore(and want all the pretty, shiny wonderful things for, even when she mucks it up🙄😂) following her adventures in Wonderland has been one heck of a ride!

The start of the book was once again very slow. Especially with the trial not happening and stuff. I think this book was the slowest so far. It took 50-60% of the book for anything meaningful to happen.

It also started to become unrealistic as Alice got deeper and deeper into trouble and the consequences therefore also became deeper but they never arrived. That's my issue. They never happened. Yes she was locked away in a cell. But we never got anyone who loved or liked her to say that she should stop as she is 'action first, then thinking' and she didn't get in as much trouble as she realistically would have been.

I really liked this series. The first book has been my favourite still, but I liked the other books nevertheless, until now. You see, Fitz got into better terms with Alice finally as he was still fighting with her in the last book and was in better terms with her only temporarily. I don't get it why he is the only one who is disliked from Alice so much. I know she hates the Caterpillar and Thomas Caard, but honestly I think it's not fair to put Fitz into the same category. Why? 'Cause he is a misunderstood character, which we even get plenty of proof. He is nice to Alice but of course he gets unkind if Alice does it to him. That's natural behaviour. I get it that she is frustrated with him as he is at fault that she even landed in Wonderland. But he really tries to be nice to Alice and we even get to know in this book that he has indeed a kind and even shy side on him. He is just as Alice said: 'bad in handling woman'. But I think just like Kaeden thinks Alice has her heart at the right place (kind-hearted) that it's the same for Fitz. Both seem unkind to certain people but they both have their polite side and reasons for their actions. And it was heartbreaking seeing Fitz realising that he could never be together with Alice when she didn't listen to him and ran off.

I mainly hated the fact how Kaeden couldn't stop loving Alice. I know she didn't always do anything wrong and was tricked, but she still behaved sometimes in a way that she shouldn't have and she NEVER listens to what anyone tells her, but demands other people to listen to her. She just seemed to develop rather badly in this book and seemed a lot selfish and self-centred here. And the ending was the other thing why I despised this particular book. Thomas Caard. She could have taken Fitz. He was voluntarily doing it and they needed a KING. Not a CARD. So once again she was being tricked and that made me start to think that maybe she is just stupid in not noticing it herself. She ruins everything. But the Kings are never mad at her. Especially Kaeden. Nevertheless what he got told near the end, he always seemed rather obsessed with Alice than in love. Their relationship just never sat right with me. At the beginning it did but it was weird when they already mingled at the end of the first book so I wasn't sure what to think anymore. And that lasted. And I don't think it will go away anymore as we are already at the last book (the next one I will read). I also never trusted Kaeden as he was supposed to be heartless like Alice also thought at the beginning. So I always thought there will be some plot twist, especially as I interpreted what Fitz said as foreshadowing of a plot twist rather than him being jealous, what we got to know in this book (which was by the way one reason kept the star rating at 2 and didn't lower it even more).

If we wouldn't have had the development not just as a character (seeing vulnerabilities) but also the relationship with Fitz and Alice I would have only given this book a 1 star rating. The ending just disappointed me so much as I was also disgusted. And felt betrayed as I always thought about Fitz again. She didn't even apologise to him or anything. They just never spoke about it again. That bothered me a lot. As it never got any closure. Just her running off and him being utterly sad. No wonder he is closing himself off and not let anyone see his vulnerable side. Even Alice hurt him after she saw it.

Might be in the minority with this one, but Fitzgerald deserved better.

Alice is not my favourite protagonist. Not by a long shot. I'm also quite aware that the only thing I love about these books is Kaeden Hart and any scenes involving him and Alice. That said, I was really looking forward to this book. Especially because the previous one gave me so much AliceandKaeden scenes. Because this book is set in the Kingdom of Hearts, I was expecting a lot more of AliceandKaeden. I was a little disappointed and a little underwhelmed in that regard.

As ever, the book drew on in the same dreary fashion as in all the other books. I thought this one would be a lot more fast paced, considering the pace at which book 3 went, but it was significantly slower and significantly more frustrating.

I found Alice far too dramatic and the writing a level too hyperbolic and fantastical. I'm aware that saying a fantasy book was too fanciful takes away from the whole premise, but the way Alice could harp on, it was a touch irritating. It's funny how things dragged but there was no end to the chaos. Alice, as she states in the novel, could not catch a break. Even though I didn't like her, I found myself routing for her. If only because her being happy meant Kaeden was happy and I am all for AliceandKaeden things and honestly, Kaeden is by far my favourite character ever.

One thing is certain, no matter how irritated and borderline bored I am whilst reading these books, the endings always have me spitting a series of expletives coupled with utter stupor. It wasn't the best book of the lot but I did like it somewhat and I am very eager to read what I hope is the final installment because Lord knows I don't have it in me to see Alice mess up in several more books.

Thank you to Booksirens for this copy and thanks to B.A. Lovejoy for creating the gem that is Kaeden Hart.

Content: Profanity, Abuse, Violence, and Death

First she was tricked, then she was trapped, and now she’s imprisoned.

Alice in the Prison of Hearts by B. A. Lovejoy is the fourth in the Alice: Pick a Card Series and was another step in Alice’s journey to freedom. Alice is imprisoned at the Heart’s Estate for a crime she didn’t commit, while the love of her life, the King of Hearts, has done nothing to help her get released. With Crown Court out for blood during the trials, how will Alice get through her ordeal?

Overall, this is a great next installment in the journey of Alice and has lots to offer, just as the books that came before. I liked that she is steadily getting stronger and more independent while still dealing with the struggles of young adult relationships and feelings.

The beginning was a bit too slow for me and it took me a while to get into the story as a whole. I know it was picking up where the last one left off, but it felt like something was missing or could have been added to interrupt Alice’s constant thoughts. It’d be great to have a little more outer interactions than inner thoughts. This one is not my favorite but I am definitely looking forward to the end of Alice’s journey!

If you have not read the first three, stop and come back. You must read them in order and dive into the world of this Alice in Wonderland retelling. This is so for you if you love fairy tale retellings, fantasy romance, some portal fantasy, and a bit of will they won’t they, in the mix.

Previous Books: Alice and the Land of Clovers, Alice and the City of Diamonds, Alice and the Palace of Spades

Next Book: Alice: Pick a Card Book 5 (Name TBD)

Alice in the Prison of Heart" by B.A. Lovejoy is a dark fantasy novel that reimagines the classic tale of Alice in Wonderland. This story takes a much darker turn, blending elements of psychological horror, fantasy, and romance.

In Lovejoy's novel, Alice is a young woman who finds herself trapped in a twisted version of Wonderland called the "Prison of Heart." This place is not the whimsical, chaotic land we know from Lewis Carroll's story, but rather a grim and dangerous prison filled with twisted versions of familiar characters. The Queen of Hearts rules with an iron fist, and the once-nonsensical Wonderland has turned into a place of fear and suffering.

Alice must navigate this perilous world, encountering various characters who each have their own agendas and secrets. As she journeys through the Prison of Heart, Alice discovers that escaping will require not just physical strength, but also emotional resilience and the ability to face her own dark past. The novel focuses on her psychological battles as much as the physical ones, creating a layered narrative that examines themes of identity, trauma, and self-discovery.

The book delves deep into themes of trauma and recovery, using the fantastical setting of Wonderland as a metaphor for Alice's mental state. The "Prison of Heart" represents the psychological traps and emotional prisons that people create for themselves, often as a result of past traumas. Alice’s journey is one of self-discovery and healing, as she confronts her past, her fears, and her perceptions of herself.

The narrative also explores themes of power and control, especially as Alice deals with the tyrannical Queen of Hearts and other manipulative characters. It raises questions about autonomy and the ways in which people can reclaim control over their own lives and destinies, even when it seems that all power has been stripped away.

What. Just...what?😱

I am not ok. I think I need to lie down after that😅😭
This was another amazing addition to the story, there were a few things I wanted to highlight that I particularly enjoyed (such as how Alice seems to be becoming more...Wonderlandy, like in her rambling), but i’ve just been fly kicked off that cliff so i’m currently sitting crying and I honestly feel a little sick so my mind has gone blank (have you ever been on a rollercoaster and it’s almost at the end, only the rollercoaster suddenly starts going backwards really fast only to slam into a stop that you can’t see? Yeah, that’s the sort of queasy i’m at😂 and knowing i’m going to have to wait after that cliffhanger is only making it worse😩😭).
I’m off to read the bonus chapter and probably cry some more.

Another great volume in this series! I was so impatient to read it. After the catastrophic events of book 3, Alice finds herself even more lost in all the Wonderlandian political nonsense.

Once again the author masterfully adapts Lewis Carroll's work. I absolutely loved where the story was going: Wonderland was being Wonderland with no care for Alice, just like in the original work. All of it was so confusing and so natural. The characters were just so great again.

As a huge fan of Kaede, I couldn't be happier with how the character evolved in the story.

Really, the only thing I could reproach the book was that it may have been a bit slow-paced with the feeling that not much happened for quite some time. Avid reader, brace yourself for the end, though !

In this fourth book of the Alice Pick. Card Series we find Alice dealing with the trouble she caused in book 3.

I found this book to be slow getting into. I really like the characters and the storyline so kept with it.

Alice and Kaeden are so perfect for each other but will they get the opportunity to finally be together? You’ll just have to read the book to find out.

Alice who has a knack for making the wrong decisions will make a few in this book that she will regret. I found myself saying no don’t even think about it a few times. At the end of the book I just shook my head and said why. I won’t tell you what happened as that will spoil the book for you. You’ll just have to read it to find out.

With all said above, I did enjoy the book and I do hope there is a sequel coming.

I fell head over heel for Kaeden in book 1 and this book just solidified why. I was NOT expecting the story to take the turns it did, but this was far from a bad thing. The fact that this is a TBC/cliffhanger is heart breaking because I wanna see these people get their due and HEA that some have earned... But when I say I'm invested, I mean I'm INVESTED.

But the Dutchess can suck an egg! I love her, but in the sort of "Oh, so you were the mean girl, Regina George in high school" type of hate/love. I love how Alice has actually started to grow up in a sense but feel like that is also going to cost us in the end. I somehow see that being a "You've outgrown Wonderland" set-up that will end the series, and it's got me nervous.

This was a bit sadder than the earlier installments, but Alice's adventures continue in Wonderland. Held in Hearts Castle for a crime she didn't commit, Alice is trying to figure out what actually happened and when her trial would be. As anyone would be, Alice is frustrated and ends up making some supremely bad decisions, ending up in the last place she ever expected to be. Another excellent progression of the story-I really enjoyed the look at Wonderland's "legal" system. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is the best book of the series by far. I almost didn't read it, since I was a bit frustrated with the character and actions of Alice in the last book. The writing quality is back up there as well, and I wanted to keep reading. The Dutchess is truly abhorrent, and Alice has matured a bit. Kaeden is Kaeden as sweet but conflicted as before. You will not see coming what occurs in the final chapter. Yes, there will be a follow up book :)

I am a very big fan of Alice in Wonderland, and this series is far from the original, but that does not mean it is any less than the original. This narrative and story take you on a different path through wonderland, with old characters that are very new in a way that is hard to explain if you have not read the book yourself.
So go on, get this series, read the books and go on a trip through Wonderland.

Like the books before this, I was very entertained by the chaos that Alice and the Kings got into. I will be adding this series to my favorites shelf and will be reading it again. Good end to the series… Or is it a ending… *Sly look.

Book 4, it helps to read the previous books. Alice is stuck in Wonderland and overtime grew fond of Kaeden. Betrayed, Alice wants nothing more but to go home. The book is character-driven and delves into Alice's romantic interests as well as her mission to get back to Oxford.

WHAT THE HELL? this book😭 Kaeden is the man of my dreams first off. Secondly, this was so chaotic. The ending had me literally screaming. Thank god the last book is already out or I would be losing my mind just like the Queen of Hearts.

This was also really good.
One thing though. I thought this was supposed to be a why choose. But I guess not, because she’s basically in love with the same guy throughout all the books so yeah nope.
Also, Claude being into Manon?! Is there gonna be any more explanation for that?
