Okay, I'm a late bloomer who's a big DC comics fan and spent my childhood summers on the Jersey shore but I was born under a wandering star and have lived in different parts of America ever since. That's enough about me. Need to feel inspired today? Looking for something to make you root for an ordinary hero? I'm all about that in everything I write.
I love a good tale that makes me wonder about things and I love a story even more that leaves me feeling inspired or like I'm capable of doing more than I realized. That's my goal with everything I've ever written. Some of the stories I tell involve twisting, turning thrillers and others have a lot of magic.
There's something to be said for getting lost in another world and coming out the other side feeling a little better about yourself or the possibilities in front of you. That's basically the best part of life in a nutshell, no matter what kind of story I'm setting out to tell.
After the epic confrontation with the Olc I kinda expected more than what we got in this book. Firstly, what was the outcome for Idina and Richard regarding their family? There was no mention of it at all, and Idina helping her grandfather... what happened there?
It was great to see Bravo Team closer than ever both in and out of their missions. That was great to witness, and this new entity that they faced surely did a number on them after their first encounter. It was just disappointing that nothing else, aside from changes to Idina and Richards magic, came out of that Olc confrontation.
Not sure if I want to continue with the series now...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This series is one of the strangest I have ever read.
Magic and the US Army? There are a very few "lifers" in the Army who can even connect to the average civilian. Trying to make sense of something that can't be labeled and listed in a TO&E is simply mind boggling. Colonels would stroke out; Generals would refuse to admit it exists, but most 2nd Lieutenants would think it's cool.
The only mistake I could find in the book was the "withdrawal" of millions of dollars. 1) Banks rarely have much more than $35,000 cash on hand and Federal law requires any transaction over $10,000 to be reported. Multi-millions by the same owner from two seperate banks would have the Secret Service, ICE, the FBI, the US Marshal Service and Homeland Security in a total meltdown.
OK, I'm sorry, this IS fiction.
Anyway, it's crazy enough to get my recommendation.
Oh, and since the primary characters in this story are specialists in such a narrow field, I think they should all be made Warrent Officers and get a raise in pay.
Once again, Idina and her fellow magical team, are on the hunt for Mobs - well, one particular Mob, that hasn't been seen before, and needs to be catalogued, and destroyed!
Trouble is, none of the team's magical tech seems to be working the way that it should do and, when Idina went to use her powers to heal a damaged Civilian, no this, too, worked in unexpected ways!
With both the Mobs, and Magic, behaving strangely, it seems that, what everyone thought would be a really easy mission, turns out to be anything but.
Yet another great read, and I'm loving that things are becoming unpredictable for Idina and her team mates.
I'm so glad that I had the patience to keep on reading the series, even though it felt so slow at the start, noas it has built up the World scene of this story beautifully.
This means that the following books should be just as much fun to read, as this one was.
Now, as I want to find out what will be happening next, I'm going to finish this review, & go on to Book Ten: 'Yielding To None', to find out just how our team will cope with all these changes! Lol
So, once I've done this, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know just what I think about it all!
The first eight books of this series really grabbed me. Despite the military aspects and the addition of magic, it is very much a coming of age story. The confusion and angst of being a teenager and feeling like you don’t fit in is very clear. Idina trying to sort out her authentic self is very relatable. Anger, frustration, and bewilderment as you grow and change is very familiar to the reader. This latest book throws in a new twist. It feels less finished than what went before. The denouement of this book makes the series open ended and leaves space for others to take up the tale of the spirit warriors. It is all becoming more like a comic book.
You know the joke...t'aint enough of this book! That's how we compliment the cook in the South. So I liked it. I mean, it all about Idina and how she keeps getting screwed by her family, the Army, her magic, etc. But it's looking up. Uncle Richard is being less of a Dick and more of a Richard (see what I did there?). She finally has an Army home, Hellion Squadron. Her magic is giving her fits though, and no one is really sure why. U.R. is having issues also. There are no misspellings, nobody mangled "whoa", editing was spot-on. World is good, I adore the hera. Would recommend for purchase or KU. 8/10 Unicorns 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄
Idina and her unit meet a new enemy and it has some crazy powers. To top it off Idina's powers are also changing and she is going to need to figure things out with her unit to keep everyone safe. I really like the concept and the characters in this series, and it keeps getting better with every book. I am looking forward to the next book to see what happens with their powers and what new enemies they meet.
I don't know really how I feel about this book. Generally I have enjoyed this series, but this book kind of threw me for a loop. Idina and her team get in way over their heads at one point, and it almost seems like Richard may have set them up. I still don't quite know what to think. Idina has settled in with her team, but even this seems odd. I will go ahead and read the last book, but I'm hoping it is better (or makes more sense) than this one.
"If anything can go wrong; it will." - Murphy's Law
"We deal with this kind of thing every day, Charles. We can help you find peace with this. And just as importantly, you can help us stop the creature that did this to you and your family from doing the same thing to anyone else.” - Idina
Idina thought that once she had dealt with her family's personal issues, all would be well... Boy was she wrong!
Since the primary/major arc has ended this was a bridge book into the next phase. Decision time as to whether or not to continue with the series. It's ok, but far from my favorite. I have to keep telling myself "She's only 19...." because she is certainly one of those "I'm the only one who knows what's going on in the world" people, right now. More than a little childish and frustrating at time.
I would swear if I had not been reading Martha's author notes in all her other books that she had been in the military. She has the hurry up and wait, the command structure, and the way people in the military talk to each other even how they think. Such a great series so far.
Out of the frying pan... This is such an amazing blend of military and majik! I'm really surprised at where this is headed and how Martha got here! Incredible as always! Howard S (the S stands for super fan!)
Love this series... It has something of an unusual military, comraderie, unexplained situations all revolving around one badass strategic young woman, her team and her Commander/Uncle. A real page turner.
In this installment we see a great growth in both central character and in the plot. The strong young female lead become a stronger older woman. The commander is less perfect. The villains are more fantastical and better at being bad guys.
Yeah The story continues to grow They have a purpose, won a huge battle However, nothing comes without a cost Fun to watch the evolution and how Bravo team was able to deal with the changes! Great story!
No down time for the Bravo Team. The Olc is gone, but now new things, very scary things, are popping up. It's a good thing Adina and her team have a whole support group behind them.
قراءات ٢٠٢٥ The cursing is too much! it is worse than anything I read before in the same genre! Why does the writer feel the need to put the f* word in every other sentence. Listening to the audiobook only made it worse because you have to listen to them cursing EVERY SINGLE TIME!
