REFUGE FOR CHERILYN is the fourteenth addition by Deanndra Hall in the contemporary, adult multi-authored Police and Fire: Operation Alpha; Bluegrass Bravery romantic suspense series based on characters first introduced by author Susan Stoker. This is single mother Cherilyn Travis, and Kentucy Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Conservation Officer Shaw Harrison’s story line. REFUGE FOR CHERILYN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalment is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Shaw and Cherilyn) REFUGE FOR CHERILYN follows in the wake of a murder in Cherilyn Travis’ building. Cherilyn Travis and her two daughters are hiding in the forests of Kentucky but when they are discovered by Shaw Harrison, Cherilyn doesn’t know whether to run or give up. Hiding from a killer has meant struggling to feed and house her daughters but Cherilyn never expected to find herself falling for the man who would steal her heart. Shaw Harrison was called in when witnesses reported an abandoned car, and three women living alone in the woods. Shaw knew immediately that he would become protector and guardian of Cherilyn and her daughter’s but our hero never expected for his own fifteen year old daughter to be the one who ultimately saves the people he loves. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Shaw and Cherilyn, and the potential fall-out as a serial killer sets his sights on Cherilyn Travis.
Cherilyn Travis is the mother to a fifteen year old daughter, and ten year old special needs child. Having potentially witnessed the person responsible for the murder of her neighbor, Cherilyn and her daughters went on the run with nothing the clothes on their backs, and a car they had to abandon so it wouldn’t be found. Shaw Harrison never expected to come face to face with his future in the guise of a struggling single mother, hiding in the woods in the state of Kentucky but Shaw was immediately smitten with the woman that would steal his heart.
The relationship between Shaw and Cherilyn begins as a recovery and rescue, and from their first meeting Shaw knew Cherilyn was the woman he would one day all his own. Cherilyn continued to struggle with events from the past but her daughters were her first priority, and keeping them safe meant putting her trust in a man she knew nothing about. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
We are introduced to Cherilyn’s daughters Maya and Lara; Shaw’s parents Leslie and Johnny, and his daughter Candace; social worker Maisey and her husband deputy sheriff Aaron Friedman, and Sheriff Carly McEvers, as well as the return of FBI Agent Cruz Livingston, and Texas Ranger Daxton Chambers fro Susan Stoker’s Police and Fire: Operation Alpha.
REFUGE FOR CHERILYN is a story of family and relationships, fear and frustration, love and acceptance. The premise is intriguing and captivating; the romance is seductive; the characters are desperate, energetic yet strong-both have some issues of low self esteem.
When Cherilyn unknowingly becomes the witness to the death of her neighbor, she knows that since she knew the man responsible that he would know her as well. As difficult as it might be her only recourse is to flee with her two children as that is her only way of surviving.
Shaw is a conservation officer who has been asked to investigate a suspicious vehicle and finds Cherilyn and her two daughters instead. He can see the fear in her eyes and the feelings she inspires him ensures that he will do anything to keep her and her children safe.
This is a second chance at love for both Cherilyn and Shaw as well as the opportunity for Shaw to rebuild his relationship with his teenage daughter. Intrigue and romance combine as they fight through the complications in the present so that they can have the happiness they both deserve.
I think one the thinks I love about the Bluegrass Bravery series is that some of each story's premise is based on a real life happening. Deanndra Hall then creates stellar characters and weaves them into these captivating stories. Everyday people going through extraordinary circumstances makes for excellent reading. In addition to the hunt for a killer there's some drama, mystery, suspense and angst as well as a heartwarming romance
Until she met Shaw Harrison, Cherilyn Travis has never had anyone in her corner or be her champion. Down on her luck, downtrodden, desperate and without hope she did the best she could with the hand she'd been dealt. Until she saw something or rather someone who put her and her children's lives in jeopardy. She had no choice, she had to go off the grid. Shaw is one of the good ones; caring, giving, protective and down to earth. He sees the beauty within Cherilyn and she starts to blossom because of his love. She's not the only one to benefit from this newfound relationship. Shaw never quite measured up in his first marriage and eventually got kicked to the curb. The only thing he got out of it was his daughter who's now a 15 year old over-the-top, spoiled brat with a sense of entitlement. Being exposed to a loving, family oriented couple who are down to earth will hopefully off on her and it does in the most surprising way.
I loved this story so much. Shaw, in law enforcement for Fish and Wildlife, bears the weight of his ex wife dumping him for a lifestyle of wealth, is asked by his friend, Aaron, a police officer, to search the woods for a missing woman and her daughters. He finds Cherilyn, a woman who saw a murderer who she knew through her ex husband, and takes her and her daughters home with him to provide them with a safe place. They have an almost instant attraction for each other, but Cherilyn feels like she is trash and unworthy of Shaw. As they begin to explore a relationship together, they desperately search for a serial killer before he finds the only person who knows who he is.
I loved how this love story played out with the suspense, the interaction between Cherilyn's daughters and Shaw's daughter, and the growing relationship between Shaw and Cherilyn. This was the first book I read from the author and I will go back to read the rest of the series because I want to read more from this author. Great and authentic use of Susan Stoker's characters. If you haven't read the other books in this series, there are introductions to previous characters and hints to their past troubles they overcame, which felt like you were left hanging with no real explanation, so I would recommend reading the series from the first book and work your way through.
As a conservation officer, he was asked to help find some people hiding in the park. Little did he know she was hiding because she saw a murderer after the man had committed the crime. She knew who he was and he knew she was. She'd run with her two daughters. Shaw brought them to his house--an empty house after his divorce and his daughter leaving with his ex.
When he realized what a good person she was and her daughters were good kids despite the impaired little one. She needed protection and he kept them at his home temporarily. The two began to have feelings. Could he finally have a real family? She had never been treated as the good woman he'd come to know. It was his joy to treat her and her children as they deserved.
A murderer. A new relationship. Was there a chance? Or would the danger win out and the man that they'd learned had killed more than one victim?
This is another great read in the series. Never a disappointment. While there is some steam, and a touching romance, we also get to see a family come together, some amazing changes for the better for each member. We revisit some familiar faces that always add to the world the author has created along with Ms. Stoker. Reviewed For Words Turn Me On

…with relatable characters who are normal, everyday people. Cherilyn is trying to keep herself and her girls safe after realizing she knows the killer of her next door neighbor. Hiding in the woods and surviving as best as she can, Shaw Harrison, a wildlife conservation officer, finds them and bring them home. The story progresses from there with Cherilyn & Shaw growing closer. Loved all the characters and am always glad to see Cruz & Dex from Susan Stoker’s books in the mix. Recommended reading.

I love how relatable the characters are. Shaw is a good man and Cherilyn is a strong woman beaten down by life. The chemistry is hot. The situation they find themselves in is realistic and has you invested in the outcome. There's just the right amount of suspense. I love how the author creates these intense stories from real life cases. Another great read in this series.
Wow. Another great book. Im hooked to this series. I couldn't put book down once started.
I loved Shaw and Cherilyn together, they may of met through hard times. But they gave each other what they needed. They make a great couple, and the kids are great. They both give each other the love and peace each deserved.
Cherilyn was hiding in the park because she knew the man who had killed her neighbor. She had two kids with her living in a tent and dumpster diving for food. Shaw found them and took them to his house. He had barely got them in when his fifteen year old daughter show up. Really enjoyed this book.
Loved it. It is very well written. I love when there is kids in the book and the adult characters have an relationship with them. So does Shaw and Cherilyn find love or not. It's a must read. Oh also love the characters from the other books come into play
Refuge for Cherilyn By deanndra Hall is book 14 in the Police and Fire: Operation Alpha, Bluegrass Bravery Series. This is the story of Shaw Harrison and Cherilyn Travis. Shaw is a single father of a teenage daughter after his wife left him for a life with money. Cherilyn is on the run with her two daughters after witnessing a murder. Shaw is asked to find them and he does but he also keeps them safe. Enjoyed this book.
Cherilyn and her girls were made to run and hide. Then they were found and brought to a home where family means everything. Rough times but the law prevailed and so a HEA for all even Candace.
First thing: Deanndra Hall never fails to amaze me. I was first worried and then scared for the heroine and her kids. That went to being invested in the romance and the whole family thing. I read this in one sitting, stayed up way too late. Could not stop!
