PASSION'S PRICE

A vision with a cascade of fairy-bright hair, how could Arianna de Clerc simply be the goldsmith's granddaughter? Even Garteh Sommerville, heir to an earldom, could feel the pull of her beguilement. But the mysterious knight guarded his heart as fiercely as he did his family honor.

The product of her mother's folly, Arianna knew well the price to be paid for marrying outside one's station. Still, whenever Gareth Sommerville drew close, her heart sang with newfound passion --- a song she knew could only herald disaster.

We pick up with the next Sommerville brother, Gareth, who after marrying Emilie, who we learned in the last book was playing both Gareth and Alex, has a disastrous experience with her and now lives with regret and a distrust for women. He's sent to Tyneham, one of his family's keeps, to attend the wedding of the old lord and Ariana de Clerc, the goldsmith's granddaughter who is haunted by her mother's experience marrying a wealthy man (who was summarily rejected by the family). Ariana's husband dies before wedding night and Gareth decides to stay in her family home, posing as a landless knight and investigating the murder. Ariana ends up assisting and they discover a Harcourt plot against the Sommervilles as well as an unexpected love. But when Ariana learns who Gareth really is, her past intrudes on their future.

Pretty good story here. Gareth was a decent sort, distrustful but not cruel. I was surprised at how early their love came about, especially with Gareth. By the 40% mark, these two are declaring their love and Ariana is dreaming of their future together (without knowing who he really is). So it's the class difference here that really provides the angst. And I was surprised, with how supposedly loving Gareth's family was, how mean they were to Ariana (Gabby excepted of course). The love scenes here are flowery rather than graphic and there is no OW or jealousy really. Ari seems to have a touch of ESP, which at first bothers Gareth a bit but he comes to accept it very easily. I'm not 100% sure that touch of paranormal was entirely necessary, other than to make Ariana quirky.

I liked this book. It's pretty well written and the characters are pretty well believable. It gets a bit complicated keeping track of some of the minor players who are bad guys, but it's a nice story with good character development.
