A New York Times bestseller! Beloved author Sandra Boynton—and a very exuberant chicken!—have an important message to share in this inspiring and highly giftable all-ages picture book for every life milestone.
Whether you are learning to skate, baking a cake, or even making a mistake, this hilarious and heartfelt rhyming book reminds us that trying our best is reason to celebrate. From children trying to master new skills to adults who had a hard week at work, we all get overwhelmed sometimes and need reassurance. And who better to offer it than a chicken “WOO HOO! YOU’RE DOING GREAT!”
The ideal gift to cheer on kids and adults through life’s milestones—both big and small—including moving up ceremonies and graduations, birthdays, testing out a hobby, starting out somewhere new, and so much more.

My amazing sister brought us a copy of this book yesterday, and gave a dramatic reading, because she knew that my kids had been having a tough time. This is a wonderful book for those who need to remember to cheer themselves on, for people who are doing hard things: learning new skills, going to school, living life. Everyone deserves to have someone tell them they're doing great, but also, don't forget to tell yourself that, too!
Everybody needs an enthusiastic chicken in their life to cheer them on! This book would be great for a child who is feeling a bit stressed in the world but also for you! An adult needs to be cheered on too! ❤️❤️❤️ 100% recommend this book to anyone!
I love this book SO MUCH! It may be my favorite Sandra Boynton (and that's saying a lot, because all of her books TOTALLY ROCK!). I preordered it, because the title was just so peppy and immediately read it to my students before the A.P. testing season (BLECH!) and to my favorite humans who were all struggling with various things. One of my students said, "I NEED an enthusiastic chicken in my life!" But I think we all need to listen to our inner "Woo Hoo! You're doing great mouse."
Delightful! Even made one of the kids tear up. Lovely message about being encouraging, and then when things do not go as you intended, instead of negative self-talk (I'm no good at this, I made a mistake!) to acknowledge that it is through mistakes that we learn. Aw.
This is a little more of an advanced concept than some of the Boynton I'm used to but I could see reading it to preschoolers and children who struggle with perfectionism and self confidence.
Mr Parker and Cousin Cam were thrilled by the antics of the exuberant cheerleading chicken of Woo Hoo!You’re Doing Great! We all need that chicken, parent, friend, teacher, coach, (or Grandma-me!) in our lives.
Sandra Boynton nails it, kid-level, as always. Especially because she gently reminds the young reader you need to be your own best advocate, champion, and supporter.
Thanks to Parker’s Fairy Bookmother Pat Foltz for a copy of the inestimable Sandra Boynton’s latest work!
"Surely what you need in your life is an overenthusiastic random chicken cheering you on." (back cover)
I adore Sandra Boynton's books and was very excited to discover a new one. The encouragement to give yourself a little pep talk is a nice touch and very appreciated after the silliness of the random chicken cheerleading.
So simple but so sweet. I smiled the whole time reading this and appreciated the message that an encouragement (specially from an excited chicken!) can go a long way whether you're overwhelmed or trying something new. I also love that it talks about making mistakes and that's it's 100% okay to make them, and that trying our best is already a great reason to celebrate.
Thank you Hachette Book Group Canada for sending me a copy to review. All opinions my own!
My best friend and her college roommate celebrate a personal holiday called Woo Hoo Day. Sometimes you just need the extra bump of encouragement that comes from a chicken yelling "Woo Hoo!" in your general direction about something you were doing that you thought was just OK, but they wanted to make sure you knew it was seen and appreciated.
I'm not sure where this fits at a public library... It's message seems best for / most needed by older kids and adults, but at the same time, it's still a picture book by Boynton... 🤷🏻♀️ My library has it as a JP (picture book), but I'm not sure I'd ever use it for a young kids storytime.
WOO HOO! This book was great! In this informational and encouraging text the author follows animals that are discouraged and down until it reveals what they need is a little encouragement. As the story goes on the main encourager makes a mistake but is assured mistakes happen and gives him a break. The final reminder is to encourage yourself. One of the major themes is while approval and encouragement coming from others is important it is most important to believe and encourage yourself. This is seen at the end of the book when the author writes “But I think perhaps the best WOO HOO… is the one you say each day to you.” As my children and I read this book we focused on the topics of staying enthusiastic, encouraged, and positive. And the importance of as the bible calls it “encouraging oneself in the Lord.” Even if you don’t have anyone there to cheer for you and things don’t seem to be going right, you're able to encourage yourself. This is a WOW book for me because of the writing craft and the inspirational message. All around the book was very enjoyable to read. In this book the author used rhyming as well as capital letters, bold fonts, different size fonts, and colored fonts to emphasize phrases the storyline. The author also used imagery to give the sense of being down at the beginning of the book as well as anaphora to help emphasize this. I would consider this book to be an anti-bias book because of the non-stereotypical characters due to the fact the author used animals and the positive portrayal of self-encouragement.
I love this book! I do need an enthusiastic chicken cheering for me. This book is just beautiful, I love the concept and the illustrations. Chicken holding a fork while they cheer on Dog who made a cake was hilarious. And I loved Mouse at the end as well. I think I'll buy my own copy.
