*Writing a bit down as I read through this omnibus every few issues at a time. Some spoilers may occur, but I’ll try to be a bit vague when I can.
Admittedly, I don’t think I’ve ever read any real Fantastic Four comic. Reading through a lot of Millar’s bibliography, this one came up and being in a collected omnibus like this, I decided to just jump in here. Right away I can see Millar’s influences in the way he writes this team. I don’t know if these characters are typically like this, but from the start Sue and Reed are having marital issues and there’s another woman that shows up from Reed’s past to catch his attention. Ben is almost always just looking for a date. And Johnny joins a rock band and then begins sleeping with a villain he was fighting. All of that occurs in the first few issues of this omnibus while a new Earth is being built at the threat of our Earth dying within a decade. Of course things go wrong with the new Earth’s defense mechanism that crosses into the current Earth and many heroes make a cameo to attempt to defeat it. I’ve seen almost nothing but mid-to-bad reviews for the most part on this omnibus, but I have to admit that I’ve enjoyed these issues so far. As the Nu-Earth storyline is shelved for a bit, things get chaotic with the arrival of Doom and some new mysterious super powered people. Without spoiling too much, I’ll just say that deception rules as the defining theme in the first third or so of this volume. Also, Mark Millar loves writing about descendants of The Hulk, which I don’t mind at all! Following the Nu-Earth storyline, things become a bit more grounded for the team. They do attend a funeral of a member of the team, which was interesting. But even more interesting is that Ben gets engaged to the woman he’s been seeing for only a little while. In celebration and to take a break, Millar writes these characters off on a vacation where a ridiculous plot and foe meets them. While all of this is going on, there’s a mystery villain(s?) plotting their plan to do villainy with Doom somehow involved. Looking forward to seeing where this goes as I continue reading. The Doom’s Master storyline was one I thought really good, though as with much of the rest of this omnibus, I’m noticing the pacing to move forward so quickly. That might have something to do with time jumps and other dimensional elements at play. I thought seeing the way they handled Doom and the Marquis of Death working together and against one another was really entertaining, but those issues flew by. The story involving Ben getting married couldn’t have been more predictable, unfortunately. The annual issue in this one wasn’t written by Millar, but it held some similar Millar tones. This one dealt with Johnny getting a girl pregnant after what seemed to be a drunken one night stand. With the baby’s life in jeopardy, the team must enter the pregnant woman’s body and work to try to help the baby through a microscopic attack, but only if the parents decide in the end that they want to keep it. The Fantastic Force issues really just fell flat for me. I was happy with where they left Nu-World in Millar’s story and didn’t really need the extra story of what that crew was up to. It felt really busy like they tried to cram too many Easter eggs into this story that didn’t really need them. I’ve seen future Marvel stories work really well, and this was the one of them. As I revisit 1985, I’m reminded of the earliest readings for Millar when my comic club took on his bibliography. I thing I enjoy the story more now, but I’m still quite skeptical about how Millar feels (or felt then) about your typical comic book fan.
This was an AMAZING book! I was super entertained and blew through the FF issues in one night. Fantastic Force is related to stuff that happens during the FF issues, but it wasn't by Millar and wasn't nearly as good or compelling. But then top it off with 1985? Oh man, was that a cool read! Definitely a keeper!
