Currently living in Portland, Oregon with her boyfriend and the two brilliant cats that run their lives, you can find Kelly all over the Internet where she is generally well liked, except where she's detested.
Kelly has published two novels - THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (2012) and STORYKILLER (2014) and the graphic novel HEART IN A BOX from Dark Horse Comics (2015). She's currently writing ROGUE & GAMBIT, HAWKEYE, and PHASMA for Marvel Comics and GHOSTBUSTERS for IDW. A season so bad, that I found this single volume version so that I'd only have one review to cover both volumes of the season! King Deadpool, Vol. 1: Yet again Marvel bring in an established writer to pen Deadpool, and although it's cool that she is a woman, she's not a comedic writer. I can see I'm a kind of lone voice but all these stories of 'crazy' Deadpool surrounded by other 'crazies' doesn't work for me. The original ongoing series worked so well because Wade was the 'nutjob' in a mostly sane world. Anyways, Wade is the King of the monsters... and yawn. King Deadpool, Vol. 2: A monster-ridden three issue (banal) storyline of King Deadpool and his monsters and monster-allies taking on another bigger/badder monster; and then the final (due to a well deserved abrupt cancellation) issue in which they also fight King of Black monsters; Deadpool even makes jokes about the cancellation. When will Marvel realise that this book needs a writer that is good at writing dark comedy / comedic dialogue, and not just good at writing superheroes? This pretty much soulless and really only worth reading by Deadpool diehards - One Star, 3 out of 12 overall across both volumes. 2022 read
Went into this thinking it wasn’t going to be good. Mainly because I’ve never been completely wowed by Deadpool books but also the reviews of this didn’t seem great. However I actually really enjoyed this!
I’d be lying if I said one of the main reasons I picked this up wasn’t for Jeff and while Jeff was amazing in this and the highlight of the book the storylines in here were enjoyable and liked everything that was going on with the character. It’s a shame the last issue was a tie in, in my head it ended at issue #9.
If Kevin Reynolds isn't involved, my tolerance for Deadpool is pretty low. I do like Kelly Thompson's writing, so I thought I could make an exception this time, but I shouldn't have bothered. Wade's babbling on the printed page just wears me down, even if he does have an adorable shark pet now.
I do admit that the metafiction commentary on crossover events and series cancellation in the final issue collected here was actually pretty funny, and if the rest of the book had been as cutting I might have enjoyed it.
Hey, anything is better than the Skottie Young run. Deadpool has had some iffy years recently so I was afraid to pick this up. Luckily its a fun ride with good story beats and stupid Deadpool-esque jokes. Kinda sad it got cancelled so early because I was digging it, hopefully Marvel will stop oversaturating Deadpool though and focus on good stories again like I feel this one did.
Mam problem z Deadpoolem. Król D. był mi polecany z kilku źródeł, ale odbiłem się od tytułu po kilka zeszytach. Minęło kilka miesięcy i z nową siłą podszedłem do tematu.
There is a large divide on those who like this and those who don't. I found myself enjoying it...and think its a solid story built with some cool art and a lotta Deadpool action! I can see how some people are divided on the art, but as a comic guy since I was young...I love Chris Bachelo as well as Gerardo Sandoval with small parts from Kevin Libranda and Irene Strychalski. I think the art is fun and this collection of Deadpool #1-10 and Jeff and Wade make for a fun thick read. Deadpool does so many things in this collection of books! Without spoiling it, he becomes a King, has an emotional roller coaster with Elsa Bloodstone, visits the X-men, and many more fun things! I think this is a good adventure that Deadpool fans "should" enjoy. I know the bigger a character gets, the harder it is to get a universal agreement on books on the character but this is a solid fun book...and above all else, books like this are supposed to be entertaining...which I believe this one is!
I picked this up because I've enjoyed previous Thompson books but the art in the first few issues was rough, it managed to even make Jeff seem not cute. Ending on a crossover even tie-in was unfortunate.
3.5 ⭐ rounded down. I had a difficult time connecting with this graphic novel, and it made it difficult to focus on it for long. I did enjoy the cameos, and I like the battles, but the stuff in-between I found to be dull and I just didn't care for it story-wise I guess.
apparently unpopular opinion but i’m honestly obsessed. this is my perfect kind of deadpool: silly and a little emo. and fucking jeff???? he’s deadpool’s best friend and my son. i could’ve read several more volumes of this.
I liked it. Really enjoyed the supporting Monsters. Obsessed with Jelby and Mister Frosty! Maybe MCU movies someday. And Night Wolf was pretty cool too.
Deadpool is a lot of fun! I did enjoy this entry in his storyline. I have read some other comics where he was a supporting character, which provided great comedic effects. Reading exclusively about him can be a bit much. He is a lot. That’s the point but it can slow the plot. I did enjoy the overarching storyline in this one. I loved seeing Elsa Bloodstone make an appearance. Jeff is a fan favorite! I want him as a pet! Overall, this was a good romp through Deadpool’s sarcastic banter.
Kelly Thompson REALLY wanted to write a minimum 24 issues for Deadpool. Like the frustration at not being allowed to tell a full length story is dripping off the pages here. 3.5 stars for what we actually got, but frankly I don't think it's her fault that the last issue randomly had to be a tie-in issue from some venom event. Venomized Jeff was pretty cute. Actually, just in general I love Jeff the land shark, so goddamn much
Very different Deadpool comic than any I’ve ever read before, but it was very good! He’s a lot more responsible than in other comics, but still Deadpool, it was interesting!
