Rhianna Davies is well-acquainted with heartache after the painful loss of her parents. At the arrival of her ghastly uncle, she is brought even lower: Rhi has been banished from her family’s estate home and must rely on the kindness of her tightly knit Welsh miners for help. Without the protective love of her parents, Rhi has no illusions that hers will be a happy ending—until an addendum to her father’s will arrives in the hands of a prince.
Marc Wilhelm, Prince of Oldenburg, is in Wales with one purpose: to claim his betrothed. A long-ago promise between their fathers forges an indelible link between Rhi and Marc, but there remains just one problem: neither wants to marry a stranger. With no remaining ties to Wales, Rhi agrees to accompany Marc to Oldenburg, where he will forfeit their betrothal so she may have her pick of husbands. But their journey takes them down unexpected paths, from the depths of a Welsh mine to the marriage mart of London to a warm reception in Oldenburg. Rhi and Marc discover that their connection and their challenges run deeper than either anticipated, but whether from their own hesitations or from danger that threatens without, the couple might be thwarted before they can even begin the happily ever after they so richly deserve.
An award winning author, including the GOLD in Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards and LDSPMA Praiseworthy's top award for Romance, Jen Geigle Johnson has more stories circulating in her brain than can possibly be told. She discovered her passion for England while kayaking on the Thames near London as a young teenager. HIstory is her main jam. Her literary heroes include the greats: Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. But she has modern sensibilities as well. Six children and an inspiring husband keep her going and make certain she doesn't stay glued to a keyboard or lost in obscure fascinating details of old castles. She once greeted an ancient turtle under the water by grabbing her fin. She waterskis like a boss and hits the powder, falling down steep moguls with grace. During a study break date in college, she sat on top of a jeep's roll bars up in the mountains and fell in love with the man who would become her everything.
Now, she loves to share bits of history that might otherwise be forgotten. Whether in Regency England, the French Revolution, or Colonial America, her romance novels are much like life is supposed to be: full of adventure.
“A Tenuous Betrothal” is a first time read in this Royal Regency/Wilhelm Brothers Series by Jen Geigle Johnson, new author to this reader.
The story is of Rhianna Davies (Rhi) who lost her parents, treated ghastly by her uncle, banished from the only home she knew, but in all her heartache and pain she has a love for her servants and those who worked in the Welsh mines. She does not have any illusions of a happily ever after until an addendum to her father’s will now has her betrothed and in the hands of handsome Prince Marc Wilhelm of Oldenburg.
Marc is determined in his role as Prince and also spy for his government. He sets out to claim his betrothed, Rhi from a long-ago promise between their fathers. He does not want to be married to her and sets his mind on helping her find a suitor as they do not want to be strangers in a fixed marriage. They agree to travel to Oldenburg to forfeit their betrothal so that she can pick a husband of her choosing. Upon arriving, Marc’s father arrange courtships between the remaining Wilhelm brothers to see who can win the heart of Rhi…but will Marc cave to his feelings and jealousy of his brothers to allow Rhi firmly in his heart?
I really liked this book although some parts were a little rushed and slow going at the beginning…Marc clearing up all the mining problems at a whim…somewhat unbelievable since the uncle has been nasty toward Rhi and the miners. Both characters are independent and strong individuals that have a sense of duty to the things or people they love. I did think the plot could have been developed a bit stronger to have some push/pull in resolving the problems with the miners, the angst between Rhi and her uncle and the relationship between the main characters. I did enjoy the heartwarming, witty, and entertaining moments in the story and you can pick up the slow-build romance to get to love and eventually the HEA.
This is a clean historical that included kissing and a little violence that is not overly done by the author. Love, loved the secondary characters…the brothers and look forward to reading Henri, Kristoff, Karl, and Frederick’s story.
Would have rated higher if there was more steamy chemistry interaction between the two and not necessarily sexual.
It was the cover that caught my attention. Then the blurb sounded interesting so I requested this book.
Now this is a difficult review to write because I have such mixed feelings. Firstly I liked Rhianna from the get go and this seemed like it would be more than your typical historical romance. Marc quickly won me over and all was good. But then he had to go and spoil it by constantly telling us he wasn’t ready to marry. Once yes, twice okay, three, four, five times? It seemed every time he opened his mouth he was telling us he wasn’t ready to marry. It was at this point when (if I hadn’t requested the book) normally I’d quit and move on to something else. But since I’d asked for this I decided to finish it.
Now it’s not all bad by a long shot. There’s some enjoyable parts. Rhi and Marc get on well, his brothers are great and a lot of the book had a good feel to it. But it was far too long. I found myself losing interest towards the end.
And then…
There’s a part. Okay there’s more than one and yes okay I’m prepared to suspend belief to a certain degree. But one part in particular was so ridiculous it just ruined the book for me. I mean I know it’s not a serious book. I’ve always defended authors of historical romances when people complain certain parts aren’t factual. If you want facts read a text book not a romance. But this was just stupid and while you can say get over it. I couldn’t.
So I’m going to agree to disagree with this book. It’s obviously jist not the book for me. Most of the other reviews are glowing so assume it’s me not the book.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
There is no plot. The perfect H arrives to save the h from her corrupt uncle (last interesting part). Instead, of marrying her he decides to give her a season in London. This last about 5 min., before the h is called away because of trouble with the mine. So she races home. When the H arrives everything is fixed right away.
Next the perfect H takes her to his home to meet his very perfect family.
There is never any problem that isn't fixed right away or any character depth to any of the characters. For instance, the H can't be with her because of his dangerous job. He's attacked 3 times and the shuffle ends quickly. Only one time it takes a day to save him 😴😴 I know kittens who are more exciting!!
To me, the author couldn't decide what book or plot she wanted. Her characters need diversity and definition. All the princes have the same boring personality. Maybe, the author was on an acid trip when she wrote this tripe book! I can't figure out why anyone would like this book🤔
Have you ever seen The Little Mermaid? Because there is a song in that show that was on loop in my head as I read your story. "Yes, you want her. Look at her, you know you do. It's possible she wants you too, there is one way to ask her. . . and you don't know why but you're dying to try, you want to kiss the girl." I felt like Sebastian in your story.
Kiss the girl!! I get why you held back, well actually, I don't. I get why YOU think you should've held back, but I don't get it. Anyone who looks at you two can see clearly that you are meant to be together. It's all there. She is beautiful, inside and out. She is smart, loyal, kind and brave. Seriously?! What were you doing? KISS THE GIRL.
I will say that I admire your kindness. Rhianna really needed someone to step in and help her and you did it, perfectly. I loved how you listened to her and respected what she said and what she wanted. Yes, your loyalty to your country is admirable too. It is. It's just, . . . Rhianna. But you eventually got there. It took quite the event to get you there, but hallelujah, you got there. You are so lucky you didn't lose your girl to one of your brothers.
Oh, and one other little thing. Now that we are such tight friends, I wondered if I could visit your castle? I promise I won't get in your way at all. I'll just find a little spot, overlooking the water with a cozy chair and a book. You won't even know I am there.
Give my best, kindest regards to Rhi. She is amazing.
Yours sincerely,
Aimee, queen of nothing but a fan of your story and your beautiful book cover. 💙
“Marc was just plain ridiculous. And if he wasn’t going to see what was plain to everyone else, then she wasn’t going to try to make him.”
What happens when a father’s wish beyond the grave changes the life of a newly orphaned Welsh beauty forever? Rhianna Davies has gone from being the daughter of a wealthy Welsh mine owner to living in a cold barren cottage on her father’s estate while her greedy uncle has taken over her property and mines. When she’s summoned by her uncle to her former home, she learns her father left a provision in his will for her to marry a handsome prince from Oldenburg. But, when neither Rhianna nor Prince Marc are disposed to marry a virtual stranger, they decide to strike a bargain to still honor their fathers’ wishes but marry whom and when they want. As love begins to bloom though, Prince Marc is still determined not to wed. Will he give in to his feelings or will he maintain his stubborn nobility and duty?
Jen Geigle Johnson knows how to write characters who evoke strong emotions. While I was reading this, there were times when I loved Prince Marc and then wanted to shake him! He’s every bit the handsome prince with integrity and passion, but his desire to protect his family’s kingdom virtually by himself frustrated me to no end. It’s so obvious he’s in love with Rhi, but he doesn’t want to put her in danger.
I absolutely loved Rhi! She’s daring, bold, smart, strong, and extremely patient. She also has a kind heart which at times gets trampled upon. She cares deeply about her people who work the mines and is willing to do what it takes to ensure their safety. She doesn’t hesitate to risk her life for others. She’s also extremely forgiving when it comes to Marc and his mercurial personality.
I also loved the other princes of Oldenburg as well as the king and queen. The princes who attempt to woo Rhi are so fun and I have to admit there were times I wanted her to choose one of them. I look forward to reading more of their stories.
There’s plenty of action and adventure as well as swoony romance. Despite my frustration with Prince Marc, circumstances lead him to question his beliefs and I was so happy with the way things turned out. It’s definitely an action packed story that takes the reader on a journey from Wales to England to Oldenburg and deals with treacheries from Napoleon sympathizers.
Though this is the third book in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone! I hadn’t read the previous books, but now look forward to going back and reading them. I recommend this to fans of Regency and historical clean romance. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
Oh Prince Marc, I have long been waiting for your story. You were just as wonderful as I thought you would be. But sometimes I wanted to give you a little shake to help you wake up from whatever stupor was causing you to be so noble and step aside for someone else to woo Rhianna. You just needed a little help there to realize that you deserve happiness and love just as much as your subjects and your brothers and Rhi!
If I were to write a letter to Prince Marc, that's probably what I would tell him. Hahahaha!!! I know, he's not real. He's a fictional character. But I don't care. I still really enjoyed his character and his story. He is truly a gentleman and a knight in shining armor. *Swoon* He just needs a nudge here and there to help him figure out a few things. And when he catches on to a few bluffs, there might just be some hope for him yet.
Rhianna is one tough lady! She was very strong a resilient in the challenges that faced her from the beginning of this book. She cares deeply and without reservation and that showed through all of her actions. Especially in her actions to help the miners in her home village. Yet her hands are tied. What can she do? Everything! She won't let anything stop her from caring and loving and doing all in her power and then some.
Put these two together during a season and you have some pretty fun scenes and moments, some awkward moments (created by none other than Prince Marc of course)! The staircase scenes were some of my favorite scenes. *Happy Sigh and Swoon*
There are moments amidst the swooning and awkwardness that will have you frustrated and hoping everything will be ok. Great blending of all the emotions and relationships from previous books to make a delightful and wonderful book. Plus...bonus!!! We got to meet the rest of the brothers!!! They have some fun in this book in tormenting, well maybe tormenting isn't the right word, but helping to nudge Marc in the right direction. *Smirks* I loved meeting more about them and hope that we'll be seeing a book for each of them as well!!!
Content: Clean. Some moments of mild peril. Nothing further than a few kisses.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
The attractive cover caught my eye and drew me to this wholesome Regency romance. Third in a series but I read easily as a stand alone. Rhianna (Rhi) Davies has lost her place after her parents deaths. An uncle inherits her family mine and he tosses her from her home to live in a hunting cabin. Marc Wilhelm, Prince of Oldenburg arrives to claim her as his betrothed. Her father and his (the king) were long time friends and they agreed in writing that if Rhi is unmarried at his passing one of the kings sons will marry her. Marc has been sent to retrieve her.
Prince Marc does not want to marry at this time. He feels his duty is take her to London on the chance she will find someone to marry and if not take her to his country and see which of his many brothers might interest her. Of course they are attracted to each other and friendship grows. But Marc is firm that as head of security for his country he isn’t in a position to take a wife.
I found the story entertaining and well written. I liked Rhi’s concern for the miners and their families. I found the London scenes entertaining and liked the brothers too. I was less interested in the spy story but it fit for the time period and helped explain Marc’s reluctance to take a wife. I need to go back and read the other books in the series. For anyone who enjoys clean or proper historical romances.
Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a really fun and unique approach to the marriage of convenience trope! There were so many adorable scenes as these two come to know each other and work together throughout the book. Marc is extremely hesitant in ever becoming involved with someone and Rhi's character arc was probably my favorite. I loved that she was trying to find herself, but still had confidence in herself and stayed true to her core beliefs and character traits! I applaud Jen's writing for describing her character so well!!
I loved getting to know the Oldenburg royals more in this story and am looking forward to more from this series!
Thanks to the publisher for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
This book took me by surprise, I did not know it would be a love story. The cover is what did it for me, I love it! I wasn't expecting to love the story as much as I did.
It is historical fiction, but it is more like a fairytale, the prince saves the girl, and the girl saves the prince, so how can there not be a true love match??
Rhianna daughter of Walsh miner becomes an orphan and is thrown out by her uncle who takes over the family mining. Taking shelter in the hunting cabin Rhianna, without her parent's protection her future looks bleak. That is until addendum to her fathers Will has a prince coming to her rescue. The King and her father put this together that should he die, she would marry one of his sons. The prince she loves comes with a duty to his country, can she convince him he can have both or will she have to choose one of his other brothers?
This book will take you on adventure, castles, balls and romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications, Inc. for copy of this book for my honest review
Oh, how I love a good arranged marriage and when a royal is thrown in, I'm all over it. Prince Marc and Rhianna seem to hit it off immediately, despite their trepidations, but he just can't commit. I devoured every single interaction between these two and wanted to shake some sense into the prince.
Rhianna is a very likable character and I could feel her eagerness and anticipation of her new situation, as well as her dedication and loyalty to what she's leaving behind. The slight Cinderella vibe with some twists and turns pierced my heart and kept me turning the pages.
Then we have the handsome, sweet, and utterly adorable prince. Marc is an overly devoted man, almost thinking of others too much and overthinking possible scenarios that may or may not happen, but his humor and connection to Rhi is what dreams are made of. This was everything I hoped it would be and more.
I loved the setting and the slew of princes had my heart melting. There are some amazing stories in store for each of them and I'm here for them. Johnson does a phenomenal job of creating a story worth reading and dreaming of.
Content: mild romance
*I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own and were voluntarily given.*
A sweet romance that feels more like a fairy tale than a true historical romance.
The cover caught my attention. Isn't that cover Beautiful?
Rhi grew up in Wales and was recently orphaned. When her horrible uncle throws her out of the estate and controls the family mining business, Rhi doesn’t know how to support the workers or herself. Marc is a prince and has no idea he is secretly betrothed to Rhi... With no desire to marry, both agree to come up with a plan to avoid marriage to each other, but also to secure the safety of the miners. Both characters are independent and strong individuals who have a sense of duty to the things or people they love.
Marc is kind and noble, But then he had to go and spoil it by constantly telling us he wasn’t ready to marry. Once, twice, many times over🙄 (I just lost count). I did think that Marc protested too much about not marrying, especially since the only reason given was his life was too dangerous.
I just think the plot could have been developed a bit stronger to have some push-pull. It felt like some of the “problems” within the book were resolved quickly, and the story may have been stronger with a tighter focus. (It was just too much) I’m going to agree to disagree with this book.
💗Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Holy swoony tension! From the first encounter to the last page this book was filled with toe-curling, sigh-worthy chemistry and tension. I may or may not have, either shouted or whispered, at several different points in the story “just kiss already!” And yet all that tension and build up just made the ending that much sweeter and better. Marc and Rhi’s love story has many classic elements, and a few new aspects I enjoyed very much. The beauty of a book written by Jen Geigle Johnson are the fascinating historical facts woven throughout an engaging fictional story. You start in the wilds of Wales, then taken to the heart of London and the ton, then swept away to the charm of Oldenburg. From Welsh mines, to Gentleman Jackson’s, to crowded ballrooms, to boat trips and races, and to espionage, this story takes you on an international adventure. This book (and series) is so interesting to me because it is set in one of my favorite time periods, regency, and yet contains royal elements outside of the British monarchy. Now I am anxiously waiting for the rest of the Oldenburg princes’ stories.
I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. A positive review was not required, but happily given.
I love the Wilhelm family. This is such a wonderful series. Rhi and Marc were so good to respect each other's wishes. I loved their easy comradery and the relationship they developed. Rhi was an amazing character with so much grit and love. She was constantly amazing me. Marc was stubborn, but luckily finally came around. I loved seeing old characters from the other books and getting a further glimpse into their HEA.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Netgalley and this is my honest review.
DNF around Chapter 16. Just not loving this one. The plot is centered around a marriage of convenience but they are able to "get out of it" and honestly, for most of the book so far they are resisting getting to truly know each other and trying to not like one another so they don't feel forced to get married because of the reason they were "supposed to". Just not for me personally. A clean regency romance though.
I really enjoyed this book! The characters were all really engaging and the plot was interesting with a nice historical context as well. This is the first book by thus author I have come across, but I definitely plan to check out more by her!
I have been a huge fan of this series ever since the first book. This series has some of the most gorgeous covers I've seen. The King and Queen of Oldenburg have eight very handsome and accomplished sons. In book three we finally get Prince Marc's story. He is loyal to his King and country to an overwhelming extent. His duty over the security of the country is number one in his life.
Rhianna Davies's life has just been turned upside down at the death of her father. Her ruthless uncle kicks her out of her home and the lives of the people who have worked her father's mine. One day a prince shows up at her door to save her and her beloved servants. Prince Marc has also been sent to marry Rhianna. Neither one of them are thrilled to be told to marry someone they don't know and love. This is when the story takes off.
This novel is one with a slow-build romance, political intrigue involving Napoleon, Rhianna still fighting for her people in Wales, and Prince Marc trying to carry the world on his shoulders. I loved how bold, strong, and dedicated Rhianna was to those who surrounded her. Prince Marc was so conflicted about Rhi that his brothers needed to "convince" him that she was as wonderful as he already knew she was. The brothers are a lot of fun and so different. It's so great that there will be a book for each Oldenburg Prince.
Even though this book can be read as a stand-alone, don't do that to yourself. Get your hands on the first two books and read them first. Trust me on this, and you will get an even richer experience while reading A Tenuous Betrothal.
I was so happy to finally read Marc's story in the royal regency romance series! This is such a unique regency because the story includes a royal family from a fictional country but the author does a good job weaving them into the regency era in a believable way.
This is a betrothal of convenience story between two people who really don't want to be betrothed, lol! I loved Rhianna's bravery and selflessness in helping the people working in her late father's mine. There were several times I wanted to hit March upside the head because of his stubbornness but the chemistry between them was undeniable, even to him!
Loved all the fun and awkward scenes - I think the staircase scene is my favorite! - and that we got to see inside Gentleman Jackson's boxing salon. There was a LOT going on in the last few chapters but the ending was just beautiful and I am excited to see what Wilhelm brother gets his story next!
I received a complimentary copy of the book but a positive review was not required.
#ATenuousBetrothal #NetGalley This book had me hooked from page one. Rhianna has just lost her father. Due to her uncle's lack of any kind of sympathy, she is living in the hunters cabin. Rhi, is rescued by Prince Marc, who has an updated will of Rhi's father. With Marc's rescue, comes the start of a friendship and an adventure. This book has all the feels, I loved Rhi and how strong and determined she is. This is such a fun series, I can't wait for the next one.
Holy swoony tension! From the first encounter to the last page this book was filled with toe-curling, sigh-worthy chemistry and tension. Solid 2.5 meh book. An easy book to read, not mad I read it, but would never read again. While there is conflict in the book, it all gets wrapped up cleanly and too perfectly. But if you want something easy, a bit of romance, and no real emotional investment, it’s a good read.
Rhianna Davies is living in a barely habitable hunting cabin on the grounds where the home she loves stands. Her parents are recently deceased and the uncle that inherited the property has banished her to the run-down cottage on the edge of their land. She barely has wood for or a fire or food to eat but she still believes "hope is always on the horizon". That hope comes in the form of Marc Wilhelm, Prince of Oldenburg who has come to collect his betrothed--Miss Rhianna Davies.
Oh, these two!! Everyone could see that they suited each other well but Prince Marc wasn't ready to marry. He wasn't ready to relinquish his duties as head of security and didn't want to marry because of the dangers of his job, although he admitted to himself he could've delegated some of the more dangerous aspects of his position.
I liked the forced proximity of Marc and Rhi on the ship from England to Oldenburg and getting to know more about the other Wilhelm brothers as they spent time with Rhi. I liked that the King and Queen didn't force Marc and Rhianna to marry immediately and let them figure things out for themselves. I loved Rhi's kindness and how much she cared about the people who worked the mine in Wales. As always, the author wove some historical facts into the story which I love.
This is definitely a slow burn romance as we wait for Prince Marc to come to his senses. There were so many times I wanted to Gibbs slap some sense into him. This man must have a will of iron to be able to fight the chemistry I could feel between them. Finally Marc admitted his feelings about Rhi to himself (cue REO Speedwagon's "Can't Fight This Feeling") and then everything fell into place. *happy sigh*
Each book in this series is a standalone but trust me, you're going to want to read the others. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher Covenant Communications via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
A Tenuous Betrothal is the third book in a series but can be read as a standalone story. I have been struggled over the last 24 hours to decide how to review it, as it was a mixed bag for me. Let me start with the positive points. This book has an intriguing premise and strong, interesting characters. I also liked the fact it was not instalove and, instead, the romance between the two developed at a believable pace throughout the course of the story. I had no issues with the prose, which was a readable and free of any glaring errors, but the place I did struggle was with suspension of disbelief over some of the action. In these kinds of stories, I am willing to allow the odd far-fetched plot point in the name of romance, but there were certain moments where I couldn't make myself easily accept what was taking place. I don't want to risk spoilers, but there was one moment in the middle of the book that involved news and people dashing back and forth between Wales and London, and the timeframes in which this was accomplished did not seem doable to me, given the time period and transportation options available. It really yanked me out of the story and then continued to irk me until the end of the book. But, that was my only complaint, and while it bothered me, other readers may not find it such an issue. If you like slow-burn historical romance and don't mind a little suspension of disbelief you are likely to find A Tenuous Betrothal an enjoyable read. It gets 3.5 stars from me.
I received this book as a free eBook ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
A Tenuous Betrothal has been on my radar for a while now. When I read the synopsis I knew it was a book that I wanted to read.
The story begins in Wales, where Rhianna Davies is doing all she can to take care of the miners. Her father recently passed and the estate went to her Uncle. He is all about the bottom line and doesn't care what happens to the miners. My Great-Great Grandfather was a coal miner in Wales. That part of the story appealed to me. I greatly love the people who labored in horrible circumstances to provide for their families.
The second was the Princes of Oldenburg. I don't know if I need to say more. I could read about them all day!
I loved the pairing of Rhi and Marc. They stated under strained circumstances. Their fathers have determined that they are to marry. This was unwelcome news to both of them. Rhi would have been content to spend her days in a hunting cabin and fight for servants and miners. She is a very tough young woman. She has a sense of purpose and a very keen mind. She is also very loyal.
The story started off stormy, but man, there were sparks. The dynamic between the two was "swoon-worthy". When they were together I think I had a perma-grin.
Let's add in some political intrigue, a kidnapping, and banter! It was a wonderful book to read.
Source: I received a complimentary copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
P.S. - I also purchased a kindle copy. I may want to re-read it at some future point in time.
When Rhianna stands up for those working at her family's mine, her uncle banishes her to the family's hunting cabin. Then, a prince shows up- Prince Marc. She finds out that her dad and his dad arranged when they were young to have her marry one of the king's sons. He sent Prince Marc, seeming to think he would be the best match for her. Marc and Rhianna agree to set out and help each other. They both aren't interested in an arranged marriage, so Marc agrees to help Rhianna with the mines and help her find an acceptable suitor. Marc serves on a security detail for his country, so he is determined to stay single to spare a partner from fear and danger. What becomes more inconvenient is when Marc and Rhianna begin to develop deep feelings for each other. Will they be able to let go of their plans and find a way to be together? I enjoyed a lot about this story. Rhianna is a wonderful character. She is determined to care for the miners, and she holds on to hope and love despite the very difficult things that she faces. The secondary characters in this story were also delightful. I loved the friends that help Marc & Rhianna, as well as, Marc's family- his brothers, as well as, the king and queen. I had a difficult time liking Marc. His actions came across as selfish and unkind. But, the rest of the characters and story were lovely, and I definitely look forward to reading more in this series and by this author! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
3.5 Stars Rhianna Davies is well-acquainted with heartache after the painful loss of her parents. At the arrival of her ghastly uncle, she is brought even lower: Rhi has been banished from her family’s estate home and must rely on the kindness of her tightly knit Welsh miners for help. This is the third book in the series & I didn’t realise that when I requested it but I found it easy to read & didn't feel I'd missed out by not reading the earlier books. I liked both Marc & Rhi but didn’t love them, their characters had depth & they were well portrayed but I didn’t feel any real chemistry between them. A well written book which was easy to read & entertaining but didn’t have me engrossed. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Johnson has done it again! This newest installment in the Royal Regency series was one I could not seem to put down. I was immediately intrigued by Rhi and her story. She had lost her entire family and was left with this horrid uncle who treated her like an outcast. She had such a fire and drive to be true to herself and to help people. Marc was so handsome and a dashing dream of a prince come true! But his sense of what was right was keeping him from Rhi and it was driving me crazy! Seriously I was internally yelling at him to get a clue! (Come on Marc, I know you can do it!) The emotional journey kept me on my toes and I loved the entire ride. If you are a regency or royalty fan, A Tenuous Betrothal is a must read! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Rhi is banished from the family estate and under the control of her "evil" uncle, bent on exploiting and misusing the local workers at her family mine. Mark's father made him promise to marry Rhi to save her from her uncle's control; something to do with fathers and and wills and arranged marriages, you know the drill. And even though Rhi and Mark are wildly attracted to one another, they both don't want to get married because they feel like they wouldn't have chosen each other, plus Mark is a spy for his country and doesn't want to involve a wife/family in his line of work and put them in danger or not come home to them someday.
Problems easily overlooked or fixed, in my opinion. You love someone, you make it work. Obviously, the threat of dying or leaving your family to fend for themselves (at least money wouldn't be a consideration, as Mark is a PRINCE) is scary and horrible to consider, but it's still always worth falling in love, getting married, having a family. What else is life for? Obviously, he takes his job and his love for his country seriously, but life is made worth living primarily through our relationships with others; the connections we make, the love we share with friends and family. If you already feel like you love someone, and they also feel the same, and there's no actual reason to stop you from being with them, why wouldn't you weather all storms to be with them?? ANYWAYS.
But the other problem is that Mark has several brothers, all essentially the same. All wonderful, handsome, tall, rich, kind, funny, and most of them, horrifyingly eligible. There is one that is a bit arrogant, but writing him off, there is so little to set Mark apart from his brothers, it's hard to see why Rhi and Mark should end up together, when all his brothers seem like such good options. There just wasn't enough given for me to get invested in their relationship and root for them as a couple. The chemistry wasn't there, or least believable enough for me, and that is the driving plot of the book, so it fell a bit short.
I read Royal Regency #1 and some how missed #2 which I have every intention of reading. But I’m here to talk about boo 3 and tell you that I gave it a 4.5⭐️. In some ways I thought it was even better than the first in the series. What I really liked was the closeness these two had to endure. I could see almost right away that they were perfect for each other and enjoyed their romance so much. Marc was everything I like about an honorable man. It never dragged and it had a good pace. I love this royal family and can’t wait to see stories for them all. Thanks Covenant Communications via NetGalley.
Prince Marc Wilhelm, in true knight in shining armor fashion, swoops in and saves Rhianna Davies from her odious and greedy uncle. I enjoyed the setting of Wales, the strong and caring Rhi, and all of the princes in the Wilhelm family. Rhi had the patience of a saint to wait on Marc to overcome his self-made obstacles of marriage. They make a great pair and I hope to hear more about them in upcoming books in the Royal Regency series.
If you like historical novels, arranged marriages, and a bit of political intrigue, then you will enjoy reading this book. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an e-arc of the book. A positive review was not required and all opinions are my own.
If you enjoy Regency stories with intrigue and romance, this is the series for you. I don’t think I’ve read a book set in Wales before this one, and Johnson definitely has me itching to go there now. I enjoyed the characters and found their journeys, both physical and emotional ones, intriguing. Plus, this cover deserves all the love! 4/5 stars
