In a future where humanity is extinct, the most evolved android on the planet revives her creator to bring back humanity before the Earth is consumed by its AI overlords.

HUMANITY IS NO MORE.

One thousand years after humans have become extinct after being replaced by artificial intelligence, a single man is brought back to life - David Adams, the man who created the technology that destroyed his people. Even with the help of the same android who brought him back to life, Adams may not be enough to reignite the spark of humanity - and stop the AI overlords who plan to eliminate mankind permanently. Now Adams embarks on the greatest journey of his life, as he seeks to find redemption for his greatest mistake and discover if humanity can - or should - have any kind of future.

In a story created by Arash Amel (A Private War), Lee Toland Krieger (Shadow and Bone), and Joseph Oxford (Me + Her), acclaimed writer Clay McLeod Chapman (Absolute Carnage: Separation Anxiety) and Jakub Rebelka (Judas) present a stunning view of the future where humanity’s last hope may be its destroyer.

This tale of a distant future world where humanity is all but extinct and a new kind of life seeks to establish itself is elevated from the rest of the herd by its absolutely beautiful painted artwork.

As a side note, the credits on this book are very unusual. It credits three people who don’t actually physically work on the book itself as ‘creators’. I’m slightly perplexed by this. Did these three come up with the idea and then decide they couldn’t be bothered to actually do the book so they handed it off to other people? Is this book based on a video game or something that I’m unaware of? A Google search seems to indicate not. Weird.

My next book: Mouthful of Forevers

This story has been told before. It's the dystopian future where the machines took over. Humanity has been wiped off the face of the earth. Only nanites that have fused with the vegetation and animals remain. Except for a few robots, one who brings a clone of her creator back to life. Now these nanites are trying to kill David. I thought the book failed a bit at the end. Rebula's art while beautiful is not really suited for big battles. I had no idea what was happening in most of the fight sequences as the action didn't flow together at all. Still most of the art is gorgeous.

Ehhhhh. Fairly generic. I read this in single issues and would give each of them a 2 out of 5 - except maybe the final 6th issue would get a 3 out of 5.

It's a typical last man on earth/machine take-over story, only I feel it lacked any kind of original or new message, let alone a twist of any kind to keep me invested.

The art was cool, I guess.

All in all a fairy lukewarm experience for me, unfortunately.

GENEZA, to komiks mocny, brutalny w przesłaniu i szybki w kresce.
Autor wykorzystał konwencję SF, by dotrzeć do głębi ludzkiej natury.

You can read my full review for No Flying No Tights here. The TLDR of it all is that this had the most infuriating, anticlimactic ending and there were likely too many cooks in the kitchen when this was being conceived and written. There are better written/executed post apocalyptic books out there.

Humanity vanished, from civilization there are only ruins and Earth is swarming with biomechanical virus that is controlling everything living. Only few robots that evolved to higher level of consciousness are following last revived human David in his mission to bring humanity back. Nice short story, with Horizon Zero Dawn like feel. Not everything is explained as book is pretty short so there is not enough space for proper world building, and there are some minor flaws here and there, but over and all comics manages to bring satisfactory story with nice twist at the end. Visual side from Jakub Rebelka, which was main selling point for me is amazing. Although quite rough, it's vivid, colorful and clear. 3.5*

Great drawings by Jakub Rebelka. Mediocre plot recycles science fiction tropes, only occasionally in an interesting way. Sometimes details of what is going on do not add up.

Mankind died as machines took over the world, and now a clone of the machines' creator is the last hope for humanity to return. Him and his helper robot(s) wage war against the other machines, trying to find a final refuge of life to bring back to the world. It's a pretty generic dystopian story, very few plot twists or surprises, but I did love the art. The scenery is gorgeous, that opening action of watching David be rebuilt as a child, the big action scenes as the machines fight each other that can be futuristic and bloody. Much of the book looks great! And the writing does have moments where it shines, like the running theme of Chloe being some sort of mother figure learning to 'love' in her own way and her care for David is like that of a mother struggling to conceive but feeling like children are her 'purpose' and holding on to that need to love another. I wouldn't call Origins a bad story, it's a nice brisk read, but it's not something I would go out of my way to pick off a shelf.

Origins (2020)
By Clay McLeod Chapman
Illustrator - Jakub Rebelka
Series – Origins #1-6
Genre – Sci-Fi, Apocalypse, Robots, Drama

Synopsis: In a world where humans no longer exist, an android revives a promised saviour.

The cover art for Origins is what caught my eye, and the initial artwork by Jakub Rebelka was interesting enough. The story takes place in a dystopian future about a world ruled by androids and an AI called the Network. It was a bit surprising to know that there a lot of creators for this novel, as the final product was just not as good.
The artwork style is a hit and a miss most the time as it barely catches much of this dystopian future. Closeups are done pretty well but the potential for world building was a miss.
The story was confusing even though the concept was simple. Very little is said about what happened to cause the apocalypse, how exactly will this be resolved, how did the main character, David, come to be and so many more. The main antagonist as well is vague and not well defined.
The only plus point would be the cover arts, which were consistently well drawn, but aside from that this would be a miss.

RJG Rating – 1.50/5
Goodreads – 3.35/5

What will stand out to any reader of this comic will be the art style which surprisingly does not resemble the cover art really at all. Which is ironic because that was the reason I chose to read this comic. I have always been a sucker for green and blue, and this one got me.

Once inside the interior artwork has a feel to it where you feel you can see the brushstrokes in the pages. As if they are making some of the shapes you see in the character's hair or the animal's horns.

The story itself didn't really enrapture me. It progressed quite quickly as well so it was difficult to appreciate the characters or their struggle. The ending was decent but strange if you think about it. It would have made more sense and been cleverer if David was Chloe's age when the embryos started hatching as it would have mirrored the beginning better since he would have been similar to what Chloe's age resembled when she raised David. This would have brought more the ending full circle, which was what McLeod seemed to be trying to do.

Origins, [9781684155552]
Dystopian set a millennia into the future. AI killed their human creators, but one human clone may change the course of history. Quirky but good. ****
#1 - “This is why you are so exceptional, David. You are the first human to breathe, to see, to stand on Earth, in almost a thousand years.”
#2 - “How do you know? Did I come from you? Was I born from you? Are you my mother? Are you? WHAT ARE YOU?”
#3 - “These robots are still programmed to serve long-dead masters.” .. “When has an android ever had hope? They talk of these emotions as if they are their own.”
#4 - [Viewing the Mona Lisa painting] “Was she an android? “No.” “She appears to be.”
#5 - “You brought the network here. Right to us.”
#6 - “You were lost. Lost for a very long time. I searched everywhere for you. I had almost given up on ever finding you again. Almost.”

Great artwork and a good idea for a slightly original take on the "AI causes human extinction" story. It was a pretty quick read but it still managed to have me intrigued and there was one or two impactful emotional moments. It did seem to perhaps go a little too fast. I was interested in the world and the characters and would have been happy to spend more time getting to know more about both. I think it really could have done with being twice as long. It rarely felt like there was any amount of time where the characters (and indeed the story) where able to stop and breathe before the next big action scene. I will say though, the final confrontations did feel suitably epic and dramatic. Although it moved fast, the book still managed to provide a damn good pay off by the end.

I really enjoyed Origins; the story was interesting, the illustrations were cool, and the colours were wonderful.

My favourite illustrations were the detailed landscapes, overgrown with the network or desolate in the snow.

I liked Chloe's storyline, and thought her questioning her purpose was really good.

I found some of the fight scenes a bit difficult to follow, but not too much to take away from the whole story.

I was confused at the end and (incorrectly?) thought I'd worked out a plot point - in the hospital bed flashback, previous David looks completely different to the hologram David, and when current David grows old he looks like hologram David. Who is this hospital David!? Maybe it's an error, or maybe it's something for a future chapter...

Mocne 4,5.

The art and especially the design is amazing. These robots look great and the world is painted wonderfully in (what looks like) water colors. I loved the visual aspect of this comic. Shout out Jacob Rebelka!

The story is not as engaging, it feels like Chapman has big ideas but they don’t get pulled off all the time. The rhinos are cool but not very important- stuff like that happens a lot. The characters are interesting but not too far from a basic sci-fi coupling with some dynamics switched.

I am a newbie to graphic novel reading so I'm not super into what people might find to critique.

I greatly enjoyed the way the illustrator handled the layout of the panels, the colors are fantastic and I liked the art style a lot.

The story is somewhat "as old as time" AI takeover of earth, we've seen it many times in pop culture. Some found this the major critique, but I went into it knowing that was the storyline and wondering how this particular author was going to tell it.

I wasn't disappointed, all graphic novels feel short to me, so I always want more, but overall enjoyed.
