I’m more of a trade-waiter for Marvel books, but I was already picking up the second issue of this run since I collect Predator variant covers so I didn’t see the harm in picking up the first one as well.

Even though this is a great start to the second leg of Zdarsky’s Daredevil run, I do have to admit that it is an utterly horrible jumping on point. There won’t be a single new reader who will be able to jump onto this ongoing with this issue, and there’s honestly just no point in a relaunch if you can’t make the book new reader friendly.

Pointless series relaunch aside though, I like where Zdarsky is going with this second half already. Checchetto’s art is gorgeous (as it always is) and it’s always nice to see a Spidey/Daredevil team-up. Still mad he wasn’t in Devil’s Reign but whatever. No clue where this whole Goldy and Hand thing is going, but I sure am invested in seeing where this leads to.

“The Island” by Chip Zdarsky, Rafael De Latorre, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

Yay De Latorre got to do an Elektra backup!!! I loved his art on Woman Without Fear, and it’s splendid here as well. I don’t know if he’s doing backups for every issue, but I sure hope he does because this was great and I want more!

Not the best relaunch. Actually, I’m not sure why they relaunched a new #1 anyway and not just go right to issue 37. This is most definitely NOT a good jumping on point for anyone who has not been reading this series and for us that have been reading this, we didn’t need a new #1. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Anyhoo, the best parts of this was DD making his rounds, running some last errands before he leaves NY. However, there were two parts that had me like, ok what’s that about? The guardian Angel guy, Robert Goldman, was a confusing touch. Don’t know who he was supposed to be. Then we have Matt, obviously in the future as he has a big full grown beard, talking to some mystery person we don’t get to see. I have no idea what they were talking about. Then there was a small story in the back that shows Elektra getting there new hideout squared away. Decent. Hopefully issue 2 will get us back the awesomeness the first 36 issues were.

I do not know why this is labeled a #1.
It jumps in the middle of a story and does an unnecessary “cliff hanger” that has been plaguing comics the past decade.

I am a long time Daredevil fan, and this doesn’t tread any new ground… except Elektra stole his hoodie or something.
I won’t be getting the next issue.

Despite this being the first issue of a new daredevil series, this is not really the beginning of a new story rather follows on from the last ongoing. This is as good as the last series and the new artist and colorist combination even makes the feeling even darker and more intensifying.

I really loved the last volume of Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky, which in my opinion was one of the best ongoing Marvel published in the last few years. I didn't read Devil’s Reign event, but this issue gave me a gist of what happened in it. But to be honest, despite being a new number one this issue is not friendly to new readers at all, rather a confusing jumping on point for sure.

Zdarsky's writing is crisp and to the point, the character interactions and the dialogues are very enjoying. I often time find myself re-reading bits just to appreciate the prose. The banter between Matt and Spiderman was very emotional and delightful. The new antagonist seems quite creepy and the ending will surely make everyone breathless for what comes next.

The back up featuring Elektra and Stick is also quite good, I have been a fan of Stick since the Frank Miller's days and Chip's really handled this tricky character masterfully.

Special kudos for the artist and colorist duo, who made the issue seemed much darker and edgy with their style. The use of black coloring and shadowing works so well with the tone and I think the issue was given another dimension due to the coloring of Matthew Wilson.

I will give this 4.5 stars out of 5 (.5 deducted due to this not being new reader friendly).

it’s the first comic in a series and it literally throws u in the middle of a plot line 💀. I loveee daredevil tho and the show is my fav ever so I could pick up what was happening pretty easily. Art is amazing!!

Wasn't a fan of the previous Daredevil run that Zdarsky did on daredevil. Not even sure why this is a #1 but who knows, marvel just wants sales. I do have hope for this though! I'll definitely be reading it whenever it comes out.

"it's been too long. living in the shadows. i never minded, but something's changed. things arent as obvious now. how to be there. how to help you. hot to help the world. i cant tell anymore. my head hurts trying to unravel it. does this boy grow uo to invent a cure for cancer? does he invade poland? i knos what i do is good. i know what i do is right. because look at him. look at what he's accomplished. my head hurts. i cant see clearly anymore. except for that one bright light thats always been there. matt murdock." his? guardian angel?

talking with punisher in th shadows. judgement taking form in talking with frank. "youre a violent man, arent you?
i told you: i have to be. you cant wish away evil.
no but you can create gardens instead. you can--
thats what this is. our garden. we're helping people. without violence.
you and elektra. the assassin.
you dont know us.
im trying to. this garden the fruit youre growing so far from hell's kitchen. it feeds soldiers.
theyre people like you or me. they ate the fruit. they made a decision. we helped them overcome the violence of their past. and let the righteous violence into their lives. to save the world.
and what has it cost them? what has it cost you? what did you leave behind in new york, dardevil? "

his assuredness that hes doing good in this way feels a bit dangerous and frank may prove to have a point

matt playing with the twin brother mike thing when hes talking to fisk's son

spiderman joining in keeping fisk's son in line
matt and peter's scene in the roof was heartwarming, the purple children wiped dd's identity and matt made peter remember and they hugged and it's so precious!!!!
secret identities solidarity

"i feel horrible leaving. but theres nothing i can do here. and theres still a chance... i can save myself. im too late. why? why am i always--?"

"so, yes, im scared because normally... i fear nothing... except god."

"stick's right. matthew and i, we push each other toward... difficulties... but it's those difficulties that make us better. because the stringest steel is forged ... by the hottest fire. and we are each other's fire. "

"you know both of you is doomed , right?
i know. he doesnt need to tell me agian. it was always going to be that way. but ive died in matt's arms before. i'll do it again if it gives my time in this world meaning. or i'll be the one to hold him as his light dies out... that man whose entire life is about that meaning. that mantain of labour toward heaven's reward.stick's roght. we're both fools. but at least matthew's a fool with a destination."

"heh... been a while since you beat me in a fight. you used to be a cold fighter. clinical. but these limitations youre attempting... theyve pulled something in you, kid. youve got that passion matt has now. i'll be damned but maybe this stupid dardevil thing is good for you. heh.
im not daredevil. im elektra natchios. and if you disobey me again... i'll throw you into the sea."

packed issue! with everything i wouldve hoped for! a great start
different styles of matt, mike, bearded daredevil, daredevil, matt
elektra, stick, spiderman, punisher, fisk's son, everyone's here
the start for this run sets up matt in a good point storytelling-wise, dark and broody as you can always count on him to be + it sets us up for a serious run with a more serious art style than say the 2014 run

"stay sharp!"

Fritz has added this run to our pull list. I asked him to bring over the first two issues so I could read them since we'll be getting this now.

I like Daredevil although I haven't been reading this story. It seems like this is a continuation of another arc but renumbered as #1. Nevertheless, Matt is alive. He had faked his death and assumed his dead brother's persona. He confesses that to Spidey.

Apparently, Fisk ran away and there is a new Kingpin in town.

Elektra meets up with Stick. It sounds like she and Matt are leaving NYC. Stick and Elektra run into some Russian soldiers whom are quickly disposed of.

Solid start to presumably Chip's second half of his run on DD, really excited to see where this goes I very much like the concept of the Hand

Really weird to do a renumbering now since this is a really bad place for new readers to start, for all accounts this is just issue 37, if you want to start reading DD Chip's 2019 run is an amazing place to do so, this is just a continuation of that story

The Spider-Man cameo in this issue was solid, but I continue to be wildly unimpressed by Chip Zdarsky's characterizations of both Matt Murdock and Elektra. I'm even less impressed by this ~Guardian Angel~ reveal. Literally cannot wait until Zdarsky leaves this title; I don't understand at all why people are enjoying this run so much. Only reason it gets two stars instead of one is that the art was serviceable.

New story arc for 2022!

It's a new season for DD and they're taking him to Asia! Well, well, seems he's inherited an empire. Tune in as the rides always what we're in it for, not the destination. After all, we are The Fandom Without Fear!!!

Deteriorated from the Miller days -- too bad.

Art is too slick and the characters that Frank Miller created have been diluted...
Influence from the TV series is not always a good thing.

READ THIS IF YOU LIKE DAREDEVIL!! His team up with Elektra in this makes it! Some people don’t like the redesign of the Punisher’s logo, but given his role in this series, it works so well. Definitely don’t sleep on this one!!

Chip's still got it. Love that we got some DD/Spidey action and I can't wait to see where all this Fist and Hand stuff takes us. Also the whole angel thing is weird

Not the best jumping on point. Pretty much issue 37 after the last volume & Devils Reign story arc. But I’m here for it as long as Chip Zdarsky is writing it
