Love After Death

Rate this book
Cassandra Stephenson is dead. So is her good name.

Bereaved widow Monica had the perfect marriage. For thirty years, she and college sweetheart Cassie made a home, built a business, and celebrated their love with hardly a secret between them.

Until Cassie dies in a tragic accident. Then all the secrets are let loose, like the sins from Pandora’s box.

Monica was not the only one. From around the world, three women step forward to claim the inheritance Cassie left behind.

Four wives. One unbelievable story.

Italian model Gabriella, Ecuadorian journalist Pilar, and Hong Kong secretary Amanda all knew a different Cassie. Now that they’re in Chicago, fighting for the money Cassie left them, they see the love of their lives for who she really was.

A liar. A cad. A woman with too much love, and not enough sense.

So begin the tumultuous testimonies that bring four women together in one lawyer’s office. Yet while two immediately fall for one another, one more is left searching for meaning in her short but notable existence.

And Monica uncovers one last secret about their beloved Cassie. A shocking truth that will hurl all four widows into their new futures – and new romances.

LOVE AFTER DEATH is an unconventional romance about love, lies, and lawyers. It has not one, but TWO hard-earned HEAs!

"Love After Death" is an audiobook that took me on an emotional rollercoaster from the very first chapter. This captivating tale explores the power of love and the resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of loss and grief. The link to the audiobook can be found here Love After Death , prepare to be transported into a world where love knows no boundaries and where the human spirit shines even in the darkest moments.

The author's storytelling is both poignant and evocative, painting a vivid picture of the characters' journey through heartbreak and healing. The depth of their emotions and the complexities of their relationships kept me engrossed, eagerly following their paths as they navigated the realms of love and the afterlife.

What sets "Love After Death" apart is its ability to seamlessly blend elements of romance, mystery, and the supernatural. The audiobook's narrative skillfully explores themes of second chances, forgiveness, and the eternal nature of love. It delves into profound questions about the nature of life and the connections that transcend death.

The narration of "Love After Death" is exceptional, with the voice actor's performance bringing each character to life with depth and emotion. The pacing is well-balanced, allowing for moments of quiet reflection and building suspense during pivotal moments.

If you're a fan of emotionally charged stories that explore the power of love beyond the boundaries of life and death, "Love After Death" is a must-listen.

Difficult to rate, but in the end I think it deserves 4 stars.
The beginning of the stories in this book was too much telling and dragged for me. At a certain point I got curious about where the the stories were going and more invested in the book. After that I enjoyed it a lot. It’s different. So 4 stars

Love after death is very different from what I normally read. The blurb was intriguing enough that it pique my curiosity and I went on to read. Story is told in 4 different POVs. Story started with Cassandra Stephenson, who is dead, who left inheritance to her wife…not 1 but 4 wives, 4 wives from 4 different continents; North America, Europe, South America and Asia. 4 ladies who didn’t know of each other existence until Cassie died. They met when they went to claim their inheritance but faced with a road block in the form of Monica Stephenson aka the first wife. We learnt, as the story unfolds, how each wife met and fell in love with Cassie. How one woman can lived such lies and got away with it really confounded me, especially in this day and age. But hell this is just fiction right..so let the mind just go wild with it.

I'm not too sure what to say about this. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. I didn't have a good experience my first time trying this author several years ago, but I thought I would give one of her newer books a try. It's a very fun setup. Four women believe that they were married to Cassie Stevenson, and when Cassie suddenly dies, they're all left grieving and reeling, especially when they become aware of each other's existence. No one is more upset than Monica, her first and only legitimate wife. Monica is bitter and determined to keep the other wives' inheritance from them. And thus they all meet, and begin to unravel the mystery of Cassie's lies, and form some surprising bonds between them.

I think the less said about the plot the better. It was an interesting premise, but the story felt like it had almost no momentum at all. The first 50 or 55 percent of the book was just the four wives telling the stories of how they met up with and fell in love with Cassie, until the narrative brings us up to present-day. We did get intervening tidbits with the wives interacting with each other and getting to know each other, but it definitely wasn't enough, if we were supposed to believe that they formed strong relationships by the end of the book. There are two romances in this novel, and I didn't dislike either of them, but I also didn't believe in either of them because we barely got to see meaningful character interaction. And I really wish that the blurb hadn't mentioned anything about shocking secrets, because it's shockingly easy to guess what's going to happen. Something being easy to guess doesn't make a book automatically bad (after all, this is a romance, and by default we know that there's going to be a happily ever after) but the sheer obviousness of this particular thing was a little too much for me.

And I just did not enjoy the writing. I believe I also had this problem with the author's other book that I read. It's not that it was bad; it just verged on the melodramatic in moments where I really felt that we could have benefited from some simplicity. There were certain phrases that were used that just did not make any sense, or tried to be flowery in a way that eroded the meaning of the sentence. The character writing was often shoddy and inconsistent. None of the characters really felt... real, you know? They were all perfectly likeable, but this is just the type of book where I was always aware that I was reading a book. And I mean, I don't have anything particularly damning to say about the writing, except that I was just always aware as I was reading that I did not like it.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Eugenie Danglar, and it was pretty okay. I wasn't a fan of her voice at first, but it definitely grew on me as the book went on. I can't really comment on the accent work for the Ecuadorian character or the Italian character, but the narrator did a good job of differentiating between all of the women. I don't think I will write this author off completely, because she does have some plots in some of her books that sound intriguing. But yeah, sadly, this just wasn't up my alley.

5 stars. I love drama and mess and this delivered all of that. Monica’s wife of over twenty years dies and Monica finds out that her wife, Cass, had three other ‘wives’. Gabriella from Italy, Pilar from Ecuador, Amanda from Hong Kong. Three vastly different women with different stories to tell. All the ladies have to meet and plead their case because Cass left them all millions in her will and Monica is having none of that as she is technically the only legal wife.

I loved this so much. The writing did take a bit for me to get used to because there was a lot of telling instead of showing but it was fine. All the women had such interesting stories and I liked the way everything went. I knew the plot twist before it happened but I liked the build up to it and the big blow up. There’s also romances in this as all four ladies find love (I won’t say who gets together because spoilers) and I liked the way it wrapped up. This was such an entertaining read that had me hooked. Read like a sapphic soap opera and I couldn’t get enough.

Different

A different trope on this latest Billings instalment but as exciting as ever. I really enjoyed the book. I would have liked a little more epilogue but nonetheless this captivated my attention.

This book is such a wild and crazy ride. Heart breaking at times but holds you hostage to the very end. It's told from each characters point of view in an amazing audio performance. Best thing I've read in a while.

A great character study

This is very different from Hildred's normal work and I absolutely loved it. The way we were exposed to these 4 different women's lives, hearing what they went through and the way they were affected was amazing. I found myself getting angry on one person's behave only to have my thoughts changed as we discovered more about another of the ladies.
I must admit I saw the plot twist coming but it was done in a way that I thoroughly enjoyed. I found myself completely absorbed by this book. Without giving away any spoilers I did find one of the relationships a little forced at the end I would have loved that to have played out for a few more chapters. At the same time though I fully appreciate the angle and the desperation that lead to it, I just would have loved to see it blossom a little more.
Overall a fantastically different style of writing and story telling from Hildred and I can't wait to see what's next.

A Storyline With More Than One Twist

The title, combined with a twisted plot, as promised in the blurb, of a widow, finding out after her partner's fatal accident that, besides herself, the deceased had had three other wives whom she considered equally in her will, is what enticed me to read this book by an author new to me — not just because I wanted to find out just how a person could possibly pull off such a major deception; I was even more interested in the emotional implications of a situation like that.

The characters of the four wives are carved out really well, and learning about their rather dissimilar life circumstances in far spread locations on different continents, and how they came to know, and get involved with, the deceased through changing first person narrative from each of their various perspectives, as well as wanting to find out about the circumstances of the death is what kept my interest throughout the book.

Yet, in order to make sense of how the story develops from its initial premise to arrive at its ending, I really missed getting some insight into her experience from the perspective of the deceased. Something didn't quite add up for me with regard to this character, hence my four star rating of an otherwise well-written book.

This was another "new to me" author that I found during the Audible Sale of the Day. The summary sounded interesting and I thought, "why not?"

The storyline started a bit shaky. It felt like it took a little bit of time before the story actually started to take off. We eventually get several POV's for this story, but the beginning has us starting off immediately with Monica's POV - she is the legal spouse of Cassie. To me, I thought, "oh no" when I heard something like "......and that was before I found out she was evil incarnate" (that is not the exact phrase, just the feeling that I got from the phrase). So, I thought, oh boy, this is going to get really crazy - not in a good way.

Well, the story actually did get pretty crazy, but definitely in a good way. Yes, there are multiple POV's and some are better than others. I listened to most of this on audio and felt that the narrator did a great job.

There were a couple of twists in the story, but there was enough foreshadowing that I figured things out WAY before the big reveal. There was honestly a bit of a let down with the final conflict. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but whatever it was, I didn't get it.

All in all, I enjoyed this book. It was a pretty unique plotline with interesting characters.

OK, so I don't even know where to start with this book. OMG. I picked it up because the blurb sounded intriguing enough. Was it ever! I had so much fun with all the drama. The blurb probably doesn't even do it justice, even though it's perfectly explicit in regards to the whole argument. But oh my, what a FUN ride, I hadn't read so much lesbian drama in ages. And hey, I don't mean FUN in the "laugh out loud" sense, I say in in the "this can't be happening, it's so telenovela I can't friggin believe it" FUN! I honestly enjoyed this wild ride into one incredibly outlandish story that has all the props for a monumental ANTI-Hallmark movie. I would actually love to see this into a movie, or an honest to goodness telenovela!

Note: I did this on audio, and I want to remark on the narrator, Eugenie Danglar, whose tour de force with accents is quite impressive.

This Was So Good ! Love, Lies Deceit!

There are stories that we read that stay with us and this one will fit in that realm. The storytelling in this book was unbelievably shocking and heartbreaking but exciting with the need to get to the end. Monica has been married to Cassandra, Cassie, for thirty years and when she died in an accident over seas, she is devastated. But before she could get a handle on her wife’s death another shocker comes. There are three other woman, wives, that all were left money in her will. This is a well delivered story of four women who are finding out about each other’s existence and dealing with the loss, the hurt and the moving on. The stories they tell and the truths they reveal lead to an ending like none other that I’ve read. A Must Read!

I think this may be Hildred's best book ever!

This book was so incredibly good! I spent the entire day reading, and when I couldn't read, the Audible played. These four women are unique in their own ways, and their only fault was falling in love with a woman who promised them the world. Cassandra placed each woman high upon a pedestal and made each of them feel like they were the only woman in the world, only for the announcement of her death and the revelation that there were others to cause them to come spiraling down. How does one recover from the blows of such life changing revelations, and just who are these other women? Why would Cassandra do them this way? Block off some time and find out. Enjoy!

The setup in this tale is straightforward: a woman dies leaving her wife and three committed partners with equal shares in the liquid assets in her estate. Much more interesting than the potential legal battle is learning the history of each relationship as told by the surviving partner. The story arc is well developed and tightly narrated so despite having four main characters the plot is easy to follow. In many ways untangling all of the story threads is more interesting than the developing romances. In the end a very good read with a near-final twist that is telegraphed well ahead of time.

This can only be called a romance in the loosest sense as it does involve plotlines about romantic relationships with HEAs. Though imo, the romance felt more like subplots.

However, while I won't call this a romance, this is a very enjoyable and well written novel that grips you from start to finish. It acts as a character study into the lives of the four protagonists, each of whom has a distinct voice and are all very well written characters.

This is a novel with a very unique premise and isn't quite like anything I've read before. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for something different than usual.

Love After Death hooked me from the synopsis and kept me turning pages until the very end. Hearing the story from all four “wives” really gave me a better sense of what was going on. Each woman’s background and connection to Cassie added layers to the story—and made the mystery around her choices even more intriguing.

I really enjoyed the way the characters interacted and how everything unfolded throughout the story. It’s such a unique concept, and I thought it was handled in a truly wonderful way. It’s a really engaging story with great characters who push through tough situations to create the best future they can!

Quite Original...

This story is nothing like the typical novel in the F/F romance genre. Wow! It's so original!
I was fully engaged from very early on, and stayed that way right to the end. Fascinating characters, interesting settings, and a story line nothing like I'd ever seen before.
There was a twist, which I did see coming, but it was still gratifying to see, and to feel that the strange elements of the story were resolved by the end, with no loose ends.
I highly recommend this for anyone who's open to something different in a WLW romance.

An interesting read. I’ve never read anything by this author and was interested in the theme. I anticipated what was happening but really didn’t like how Monica behaved after. Some was understandable but upon her discovery, the manner in which she dealt with the situation seemed so contrived and didn’t feel like love. The conclusion was pretty good though. Interesting characters, relationships, lives and exposure to different countries.

Not a fan of the narrator. She did a great job on the characters with accents but not Monica and Cassie.

I’ve tried this author before and not been too impressed but I liked the premise of this, so thought I’d give it a try. As a lawyer myself I liked the idea of 4 ‘wives’ of one deceased woman being left a quarter each of the deceased’s estate and coming together in a lawyer’s office to tell their stories. Whilst some suspension of disbelief is required both in terms of the stories told and the romances that develop, it’s quite fun. One of the romances is much more believable than the other and the twist near the end isn’t entirely unexpected, but all in all I rather enjoyed this.

WTF did just read

Omg. I don't even know where to
start. Hildred Billings literally out did herself with this one. I didn't think she could top the Mercy series which to me, was her best work up to this point but apparently I was wrong. Monica, Gabriella, Pilar, Amanda and Cassie where like a whole roller coaster ride that I NEVER wanted to get off of. Kudos to the author for writing such an excellent story....

Not what I expected.

Being a fan of the author, I approached this book with a bit of hesitation... The topic of grief and death, in what I was expecting to be an age gap lesbian romance? How will that work??

And then I started reading.
Got through a chapter, then one more, and one more.
And then the perspective change - and I knew then that I was going to be consumed by this book.

Loved it!

Magnificent Writing

A story of love, life, deceit and renewal. Monica learns at the reading of the will of her wife Cassandra that there are three other “wife’s”. It seems that Cassie has been living a secret life for most of their lives. A wife in Italy, Ecuador, and Hong Kong. This enthralling story of how the lives of four women recover and move on after the death of their “wife.”

Loved It

I was reading this and the whole time I thought Monica needed to calm down a bit. Granted I don’t think I would if I found out something like that about my wife. But by the last paragraph I was so happy for all the women involved. Well aside for Melissa. Loved the vindictive side.

4.5 ⭐️ Unique story about a married couple and 3 other women. How there lives become entwined with a bombshell ending.

This book is written from each women’s perspective, 1st person. It doesn’t have a lot of “normal” dialogue, each woman tells her story in a narrative.

I really enjoyed the way this book was written.

Monica is devastated by her wife Cassie's death... then at the reading of the will she learns her wife had THREE OTHER WIVES.

We get Monica's story, then Gabriella, Pilar, and Amanda. Also, turns out Cassie was a bit of a a**hole, really.

A angry Monica starts digging into Cassie's life... and finds another surprise.

Good read. I did guess the twist ending...
