Nineteen years ago, Evander Laun and Natalia Havashire went on the air throughout the world on almost every news channel simultaneously, to reveal to the human race that Elves walked among us. It is the most-watched historical event in modern times.

An aspiring investigative journalist, Killishia Renner, finds out with the rest of the world that she is an Elf unbeknownst to her, when she manifests Elvish physical traits on the air during the Tree Lighting ceremony in Rockerfeller Center in New York. It challenges everything she thought she knew about herself and her family.

Intern follows the hurdles she must overcome as she learns about being an Elf while facing the uncomfortable popularity of being Elfed in New York.

Nineteen years ago the elves revealed that they were real and a branch of the human tree, split off from homo erectus just as homo sapiens split off from homo erectus. The people who revealed that elves were real, on tv, were the heads of two of the wealthiest companies on earth. As such, any kind of thought (or actual action) by a government or semi-private organization to "take care" of the elves was squashed. Especially as they recalled that those two companies manufactured a good percentage of the military hardware out there. So certain laws were passed, and stuff.

Roughly two years ago, a young woman named Killishia Renner begins a paid internship with a news organization. Before you can begin to pronounce her first name, it's two years later and we are finally up to "today", or the present. She's still an intern, though her time is coming up shortly. Will she be moving up the ladder, or out the door? That question, and others, got overshadowed when, while on air as an elf, she became an elf.

Heh, just felt the need to word it that way.

As far as she knew, she was a homo sapien. Tasked, by her boss and against her will, to be an elf for a weather program on tv. Oh, and it is Christmas time. Did I not mention?

Kia and her work wife, Lisa, are both tasked/made to work as elves for a weather broadcast. While point at weather patterns and the like, Kia elfed. As in, her ears grew, her skin did something, and, well, it was revealed that she was an elf. On national tv. Live. In front of millions.

The book proceeds to unfold from here: following as Kia attempts to accept that she's actually an elf, while both elves and humans preasure her and stuff. Meanwhile, someone is killing elves, and Kia investigates.

Meanwhile, on the romance front, Kia drools over every male she encounters. Not really, but enough so that I had to double check which book I was reading and if there was any note that Kia was supposed to be a heterosexual. Then she started lusting after the woman chosen to be her "ambassador" (Tana), the person tasked with pulling Kia into the elf world. But that's not the romance front but the lust front. On the romance front: flirting happens. A blunt comment about how Kia would have a wife not a husband when the time came occurs. The two elves, Kia and Tana circle each other and flirt, but do not actually "have a romance".

This is more of a "coming of age, finding out you're different than expected, investigating murder" book than a romance.

A freaking awesome start!

I gotta say I have been slacking on reading more from this author and I have come to get regret that decision as I am catching up now. This was certainly a new take on this mythical fantasy setting we know and that cliffhanger! I cannot wait to see the next book

Fun and captivating

This is a fun story. It has its deep points, but even those are delivered in a fun way.
Definitely reading the next book

There is clear social commentary directed at current racial tensions. I don't regard that as a problem.
The approach is novel, well thought out and well written. It's both entertaining and thought provoking. A great read. In my opinion this authors best work.

An Entertaining Start

A great first book for the series! I really do like Kia as a character, she is very determined but a bit silly. Klutzy and graceful, all in the same moment. I hope the rest of the series is just as wonderful.

Starts out cute & dumb
...but steadily gets dumber (and less cute) as it goes. Full confession: I DNF'd this book in disgust until I saw that I was 95% done, So I just sucked it up and finished the last 20 min of it.
At first this book seems to have a bit in common with Emily Monroe Is Not The Chosen One. They are both stylistically light, but where Emily is a slapstick comedy parody of super heroes and the cliches of that trope, this is trying to be funny, but at the same time grim, and is overloaded with cliches ...and spellcheck errors.
conscious not conscience. Soldiers not shoulders. there were dozens of these. Erik Schubach should never use that proofreader again, and if he did his own proof reading He Should Never use that proofreader again.
And Oh god the cliches! the spunky girl heroine who had to work for everything she has. She's oh so cute, but a little bit clumsy. The gruff but fair boss, the quirky best friend, The clues sitting out on the table that only she can seem to find. Keeping pointless secrets, but blurting out things when she knows she's being listened to. Walking into a painfully obvious trap after sending away her bodyguards. I swear to god even the monologuing bad guy who is going to kill her after the speech who gives her the final clue she needed to break this case wide open.
Here's and example: The bad guys tell her that they have kidnapped her dad and she has to come with them to be reunited with him- and so she does! does she check to see if her dad is sitting safe at home with a beer? oh hell no. she goes along with dude who admit to kidnapping hostages. And when she gets to the place where dear ole' dad is alleged to be a prisoner does she ask to see her father before cooperating with the kidnappers? You guessed it, Nope! She just goes along with what ever they want, even allowing them to take biological samples and run medical tests on her WITHOUT confirming that they ever had her dad in the first place.
This book was so effing stupid that it put me in a bad mood.

An urban-fantasy, but not really fantasy...

Kili really dislikes Elves. They came "out of the closet" a few yeas ago, and now everyone and their dog is in love with them.... Except Kili. She can see how those who "Elfed" instantly got a fat dose of arrogance and entitlement and stops caring about everyone ells..... So it's quite a shock when she herself "Elfed" and turns into one.

I just love all of Erik Schuback Urban Fantasy novels. They are lighthearted, fun and full of likable characters. Kili is just a young woman a the beginning of the story, thrown in the deep she has to learn a lot and learn to adapt.

A definite recommendation from me, I'm on to the next in the series.
(Which I not by accident have already bought!)

I jumped on this book like a platypus on a pile of shellfish. A fun story and I hope a start to a new series while I wait for the next Facet of April or Jinxed story to come out. A cute and adorkable girl trying to make her way in a world that reflects our world of the 1% and inherent prejudices again someone different. The elves coming out of the shadows and seeming to overnight have the best jobs and opportunities has sparked jealousy in some of the population.
It will be fun to see where Mr. Schubach takes this new world (my guess will be the inevitable platypus hegemony).

(Jan 2022)I just received the Audible version of this story and of course enjoyed this version as well.

Ears on a Swivel

A good start, solid premise, with loads of potential for future stories. A little bit coming-of-age story with tiny parts of crime drama, Elfed In New York is a great beginning. Killy (the main character would kill me calling her that) is likable and just clumsy enough to be adorkable. Highly recommended for fans of urban fantasy but instead of staying in shadows and secrets (kinda overdone for the genre) this brings in a new brightness (apologies to those with sensitive elf eyes)

Started reading because Amazon kept on recommending it and I wanted them to stop filling up mu inbox with "Elfed In New York". I am actually glad that I did as it is a good novel with a likeable m/c.
No insta-love and an interesting storyline - try it.

Killishia Renner was four years old when Evander Laun (I hope I’m pronouncing that right) and Natalia Havashire appeared on a world-wide news broadcast to reveal to the entire human race that the Elf community walked upon the earth.

For a while Kia, along with the rest of the world, was totally “stanning” the Elves who were heaped with accolades and praise. However, in high school, Kia’s best friend suddenly manifests Elf traits and turns against everyone she cares about, including her family and even Kia.

Fast forward and Kia is 25 years of age, working for a TV news station as an intern with aspirations of becoming an investigative reporter. Dressed as one of Santa’s elves, she is at Rockerfeller Center, along with the rest of the news crew to attend the annual tree lighting. As she begins to assist the meteorologist by pointing to invisible objects in front of a green screen, she begins to change.

With newly pointed ears and glowing eyes, Kia suddenly has a front-row seat into the reality of life as an Elf. In a short amount of time, she’s approached by the Elven Council and offered the moon if only she will accept her new role in their hierarchical society and just do as she is told.

But Kia’s innate curiosity and journalistic ambitions lead her on a path to expose the Elves and their dirty little secrets.

When I began this book, my first thought was, dang this girl is such an adorable geeky klutz. One of the things I love most about this author’s protagonists is that they all have flaws, and none of them seem to fit into socially acceptable molds.

While Kia is most assuredly flawed, what stands out is her intelligence underneath the goofy exterior. I love the way she is able to use her strong intuition and a solid inner strength to never back down. This is what makes this story, along with the author’s other books, a joy to read.

I was particularly enticed by the way this book took a deep dive into the humanity of both the Elves and the humans (called “Sapiens”), yet still being able to find something that makes them unique. For example, the intense love/hate relationships between the two sub-species is never ambivalent. Rarely, as with real life, do we see the oh well, let’s just live-and-let-live mentality, which leads to the very worst natures of them both.

This story also took a look at “this is how it's always been done” and shows how being unable to be open to new ideas might be the very worst thing to do. Through this, we discover how fear can make people do horrible things. One of the arcs shows this very dark side by the killing of Halflings for no other reason other than the possibility exists of their exposing the Elves’ secrets to the rest of humanity. I particularly enjoyed how Kia finds her own way in her journey, rather than allowing others to define her and her unanticipated role (especially after learning some pretty terrible things about her new Elven community.)

I also loved how Kia interacted with some of the more endearing side characters, such as her “work wife” Lisa, and her ambassador to Elfdom, Tana, and the absolutely amazing mountains of Elf hunkiness she nicknamed the Cookie Twins, to name a few.

The interactions Kia develops with these other characters is displayed extremely well in the respect she shows all levels of Elf society. She makes a difference just by showing others they are equal, regardless of their standing or societal position.

As for what I didn’t love in this story, there was very little. It is a well-written, well-edited book with wonderful characters, but I wish there had been a bit more depth to the story. Let me clarify. This author has some absolutely incredible story ideas. His ability to see underneath the surface and write it into his work is inspired but, I never really felt fully pulled into the storyline. This isn’t to say there weren’t moments I couldn’t put it down, and this is the reason I kept picking up his books, but there was definitely room to grow in this particular story.

Now in saying this, I want to add a footnote. Schubach’s later books in the series actually did begin to show that intense depth, that “grab onto you and won’t let go” kind of storyline, for which I applaud his growth as a writer.

There were also two, more minor, aspects of discontent in this book, both just of my own personal opinions and tastes.

I wish the book had been longer, and not left on somewhat of a cliffhanger. Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand why he did so, as it entices a reader to buy the next installment if for no other reason than just to figure out what happens next.

This is simply my own individual thoughts as a reader. I am not a fan of the cliffhanger, and I find this kind of serialization aggravating, especially if I really love the book.

So, future authors out there, if you feel the desire to end your incredible story with a cliffhanger, take this little tidbit from one reader who might be a future fan. Please don’t. If you take the time to write a great book that I fall in love with, never fear I will buy the next one without the perceived attempt to force the issue. If I don’t love it, a cliffhanger won’t entice me to buy it.

I truly enjoyed this book!! I am so sad that there isn’t any others available… yet.
From the details of the characters to the different voices the narrator used I was engrossed in the book from the start.
It had everything from action, mystery, love interest, and fantasy. All the makings for a great series that could have endless spin-offs! I cannot wait until the next book drops.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful book with me!

excellent read!

This was an excellent read, a great story. No real slow downs or low spots as the story and characters carried it along at a smooth and exciting pace. It was so fun to watch as the characters came across as real as if you met them on the street. Looking forward to more!

Agile klutz outed as elf to everyone's surprise including hers. Good story, want another with that setting. Also like Foxy, shifters in setting for that one. Sequel needed there too.

In a world where Elves have come out of hiding, what is one to do when suddenly, you turn into one?

The world building in this is great. How would society have changed when Elves come out of hiding and start living openly among us? But, more importantly, how is Kia going to deal when she's revealed to be an elf, on live TV? Her parents have some explaining to do.

I like this

This reminds me of on so many stories by Dick Francis. It follows the best writing practice of "Show not Tell" and allows your imagination to fill in the details. Read it yourself and decide for yourself.

This was a fun short read. I was intrigued by the elves being another branch of the Homonus species like Neanderthals and Sapiens and not really a fantastical creature of legends. So this was more an alternate reality genre of fiction bordering on Sci-Fi.

The story follows Kia as she belatedly manifests as an Elf on live television and has to learn about the closely guarded world of the elves while not being completely assimilated in to it and stay her own person and also solve a mystery so she can fulfill her dreams of being an investigative journalist.

I absolutely loved the story and more so the characters, especially the parents and work wife Lisa. I am looking forward to more in the series.

I enjoyed the read and would recommend it for children because there was no really bad violence. The only thing I did not like was there was not enough dialog.

Cute,.adorkable new series

A funny, cute, klutzy read. Well worth the asking price. I just would have liked a bit more backstory about the Elves, but it looks as if the author will be revealing more as the series progresses. Can't wait for the next installment!

This was a fun story and I will certainly be reading the next one in the series, but it was not without its problems.
Kia is perhaps a bit too typical of this author’s heroines, for example she has many similarities to Knith from the Worldship Files and Fixit from the Fixit Adventures. This is probably why I became slightly irritated with her, the mannerisms were already very familiar and the overblown reaction to ‘Tana’ made me groan.
However I did enjoy the story, if possible I would have given 3.5 stars.

A Really Good Read

I was really surprised that I liked this book as much as I did. First I never read a story with a female lead. Just never cared for them. The reason I started this book was the number of good reviews this book had. Of course I agree with all the other people, this book was Great! I really enjoy the character along with all the other characters. This is a funny well written book and I pretty sure you will enjoy it too.

Wow! This uban fantasy is terrific! Kallishia is such a beautiful loveable clutz. And you can't help yourself falling for her. Mains are in their early 20's. Great supporting cast.
If you haven't read any of Erik Schubach's books you missing out. I was sceptical because he's a guy. But Erik started writing Sapphic romance for his nieces.

And boy can he write strong, real, characters. He's light on the physical relations, but the chemistry between the characters are so hot it makes up for it.
I recommend you also read his other series, techromancy scrolls.
