Last Marines #1

Gods of War

Rate this book
The mission was supposed to be his last.

After more than twenty years in special operations, USMC Gunnery Sergeant Wolf Mathison wasn’t looking forward to retirement when—implanted with an experimental artificial intelligence—he deployed on his last mission with a platoon of Marine Raiders being sent to the Jovian moon Europa.

The USS Jefferson was destroyed en route, though, and only Mathison and three other Marines survived. Trapped in stasis, they were hurled into the outer reaches of the solar system, where they wouldn’t be found for hundreds of years.

Meanwhile, on Earth, the United States is destroyed, and a fascist regime rises to power, expanding into the galaxy to plant its boot heel on the necks of humanity. But the SOG, the Social Organizational Governance, is not unopposed, and researchers at a top-secret research outpost are working on a solution that will let SOG reign supreme. Unfortunately for the Marines, they’re awakened from stasis at the same time the researchers awaken a threat that endangers the entire human race.

The odds are against them, but that’s nothing new for the Marine Raiders.

I very much bought this book on a whim. The interesting cover and blurb caught my attention, and I went for it despite never having heard of the series or the author. I’m happy to say that the risk was worth it this time! I really enjoyed this. It was action packed, has an interesting storyline and has multiple characters I really enjoyed reading. I will say that the book ends very abruptly and relies on you continuing onto the next book to get towards a final resolution, which is a little disappointing. It’s not bad though. This is definitely heavy on the military sci-if side, as we spend all of our time with a couple of groups of marines. That type of sci-fi is one I like, so I was happy with that. Actually, I think anyone who enjoyed the colonial marines from the movie Aliens (with Hicks, Hudson and Vasquez) would really enjoy this as it reminded me a lot of that. Almost 4.5/5.0 stars for me.

Excellent.
We begin in the near future, with marines about to be sent to Europe (the planet) as security... And soon enough we are some centuries in the future, following a special operations group helping a rebellion against a totalitarian state in space... Mankind has colonized the stars, but there is one big dictature crushing all opposition and only a few daring to oppose it.
During a mission this opponents, the Asgardians, meet our marines, who were frozen in time after an attack... The Asgardians are badass, the marines only more so...
And what they encouter in the station where the marines were imprisoned, will change them forever, as, apparently, an ancient foe is once again on the march!

There are also alien races, top characters, lots of excellent action... what are you waiting for?

This was interesting in the way it was told. It starts with regular American Marines in a regular situation. They are fighting Russian/Chinese regime (of course those are facist) Then they're sent into space and we don't hear from them for a good long while. In the meantime, we meet Scotti, head of the space vikings from Asgard, speaking a mishmash of English and some other Scandinavian languages (Finnish? Swedish? My grasp of these languages is sparse).

The space vikings are embroiled in another war against a race that wants them eradicated from the planet they're on, and they manage to escape back to their home planet to regroup. Enter the old telepathic soldier trapped in a 12-year girl's body. She says there is an "artifact" on a research station and they need to go get it. So they do, and that's where we meet up with the regular Marines again.

So if you're reading along and thinking 'what happened to the Marines?' don't worry - because you'll see them again. And of course the new enemy of the space vikings is another facist regime wanting to kill all the capitalists.

If you're an American, you'll appreciate the fight against socialism. If you're not, you'll be annoyed by all the patriotism of the marines and the almost cartoonish portrayal of the fascists. The way that works in our real world is serious business; the way it works in this story is portrayed as a little ridiculous.

I had to keep putting this down when life took my attention away - and then found myself not really caring if I picked it up again. I did like the characters but not as much as other series. This book was good enough, but if I'm honest I have to admit that it was a placeholder for me. I was waiting for the release date of 3 other books. I'm glad I finished it right before those came out.

John Pirhalla was great (as usual) on the audio. But his English accent leaves a little to be desired. Good try, though.

I think this story is worth the read. I may come back to the series later when I've run out of new shiny books in the series' that I love and see where it takes me. It has potential.

Great story

Great story and great combat. Really interesting how the author wove together such different storylines. Looking forward to what comes next. Recommended!

Complicated lots of detail not for the faint hearted or readers that have to have instant gratificat

If you likes books that feeds the reader with a plethora of details, you will like the book. Frisbee fries not leave anything to the imagination. Getting through the first forty or so chapters is an exercise in self discipline; you may not feel like going to next page but at around chapter forty two Gods Of War transforms into a page turner a bok you cannot read fast enough.

Imprecise word choices, vague and/or ambiguous sentence structure, and repetitive, redundant passages hold this one back. The book has some authentic and fun military dialog which seemed promising, but my overall impression is that this one is badly in need of an editor. DNF.

Great new series and an outstanding start. This first book is very, very interesting, but it has some surprises and some challenges. You'll initially start off with Gunnery Sergeant Wolf Mathison, USMC and his small platoon that is, regrettably getting smaller each day. He's in a battle against the Asiatic Union which, by rights, he shouldn't be since his platoon is the first of a highly skilled tactical unit not designed for trench warfare. Yeah, his Raider Marines are a cut above normal Marines in that they have been implanted with some seriously new technology. All the Marines in his platoon have a Sentient Cybernetic Biological Interface (SCBI) located in their brain using newly grown brain cells for just this purpose. His platoon was the first with this new experimental "scoobies" as they call them.

The fight he now found his platoon engaged in was supposed to be a test of this new wet-wear and how much it added to the combat effectiveness of his troops. Except the Company Commander was wasting GySgt Mathison's Marines since the particular sector his platoon was to cover was becoming undermanned and the weak link in the company front lines. Mathison had requested reinforcements, but the Captain had refused telling Mathison that his "enhanced" troops should be able to handle the job. Well, they were doing just that even though the number of Asiatic Union troops coming at them was far larger than any other place in the line. And, because of that, Mathison was loosing Marines just by being vastly out numbered. Mathison rightly believed that the object of his platoon being here was to test out it's capabilities and not get the all killed. He already knew that the scoobies were working just fine and did add significantly to the combat abilities.

Finally, the 1st Sgt showed up with some reinforcements and together they halted the Asiatic Union advance. All was calm for awhile and GySgt Mathison expected his platoon to be recalled anytime soon. They had another mission ahead of them and that was to go to Jupiter's moon, Europa and support that effort. It is the year 2088 and space flight is just starting to allow humanity to move to the stars. Only, there won't be many of them left if they continue fighting under their current commander. Then, things get worse. He's ordered to send out three-men night patrols. Marines follow orders whether they like them or not, so he does what's he has to and loses more Marines.

Things can change quickly during a battle, and they do for Gunnery Sergeant Mathison and his Raider platoon or what's left of it. They receive orders that their is an inbound pickup coming to take them from the battlefield by to the rear so they can get prepped for their trip to Europa. They have a very short window to make their shuttle up to the starship taking them out. But, they do make it back to the rear, get cleaned up and told they can rest while in stasis during the trip to Europa.

Gunnery Sergeant Mathison has been a Marine for a long time. He knew he was probably going to have to retire after Europa mission. His body had been through too much and he was feeling his age and knew he was getting worn out, much too worn out to lead these young Marines he was in charge of. But, while he was in-charge, he was going to keep them alive at all cost. That was his job and he was good at it. He had developed a relationship with is SCBI whom he called, "Freya". She (which is what he though of her as, so she was) could provide him with all sorts of information via a neural link and her ability to interface with external networks. It took some getting used to having a voice in your head all the time, but it seemed to be working even for this older Marine. He figured that his platoon would be just the first of all the Marines eventually getting the implant.

So, we're now up to Chapter 12 in the book. Bam! Switch gears! It's now the year 2400 and your Finnish and Swedish language skills better be ready. You're off on another mission that has absolutely nothing to do with the first eleven chapters in the book other than to introduce you to some United States Marines. Now, they are or should be long dead. You have some new troops to read about so suck it up and continue on with the story.

I really, really liked this book. It is definitely military science fiction and reads real easily. It does kind of end abruptly, but that just makes me want to read the next book, which is "Darkness Rising" and it's available on Amazon right now. I've already added it to my reading list and just might move it up to read real soon.

Military combat actions described vividly

While the opening battle scene on Earth is full of tension, it seems a bit long and the layout of the territory needs more description or a map showing where the various forces are deployed. I felt a bit lost in understanding which group was located where doing what. The emotional impact comes through powerfully, though, and it sets up the protagonists’ valor and capabilities to be believable in the space battles that occur later on in the book.

The author skips over the part where the American soldiers are put in stasis in order to change POV to a new set of military-trained elite fighters in the future who speak another language (based on Finnish). It’s an abrupt transition that is not for weak-minded readers. It takes perseverance to convert the new jargon into English jargon, but the words become familiar after awhile. The location of the new soldiers needs more initial set-up as it isn’t clear at first that they are all on the ground. The author could take some more time to create an alien world so the book feels more sci-if.

The final setting, where the two groups of fighters converge, is very intense. Throughout the book, there is a lot of violence and killing, some brief gory details, a lot of sex jokes and teasing, some body function humor, some profanity, and artificial intelligence! The momentum of the story builds to a mini climax with aliens in the mix, and then the plot winds down for a brief respite for the heroes.

The second book promises to be full of more fighting, inside jokes, and another layer of political intrigue.

Overall, the writing is compelling. The characters are likable, and the reader wants them to succeed against terrible odds. There are a few mistakes here and there, but they can be skipped over. The story ends at the 96% point; the rest is a glossary and teasers for other works by other authors.

Gritty

The description of an aging Gunnery Sargent, his men and the Marine creed is fascinating. The SCBIs are certainly something that could happen in the near future. We already have chips being put into people’s brains for medical purposes although they are still experimental. You can tell that the author is a retired marine. His pride in his corp is obvious and admirable. The only thing that I’d say is that he left out the SAS (British and Australian) in mentioning elite corps. The story certainly got down and dirty, especially in the earlier chapters. The time in the Research Station was something out of a horror story. It would have been good to know a bit more about the entity that caused so much trouble but, hopefully, that will be clarified in the next book. Overall, a good read.

A great first instalment!

This tale has elements of Doom, Warhammer, Halo and a few others. Instead of being a hinderance, it all comes together quite well. The military aspect is written superbly (as to be expected of a Marine veteran) and the Sci-fi is plausible without being too otherworldly or farfetched.

The characters are likeable and the Private is my favourite. The story and action flows well and doesn't become convoluted.

The underlying theme which runs through everything is the danger of socialism. Which is quite apt considering the current political climate. The author alludes to many such instances including the kind of government that is eventually created. Basically - nothing good. That, is the most plausible of all, considering we've seen it happen before.

Marines, Space Vikings, and Space Resident Evil

I really enjoyed this book. Plenty of action, well written characters, and just the right amount of humor. Mathison is a noble and good leader that finds himself in a horrible situation. Stathis is annoying at first, but he becomes really funny as the book goes on. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the abrupt transition to the future. The Marines are getting ready to board the shuttle that will take them to Space, and then the next chapter takes place 800 years later with an entirely new set of characters. I think there's a way to still have this transition but not have it be so sudden or jarring and make people think they're missing something. Can't wait to start in on book 2

This was really good! Self-publishing is really such an awesome treat for readers who want stories different from what you find in stores. This book was really fun. The storyline was engaging, the characters made me laugh hard at points, and the action was well depicted. A commendable start to this series that I am eager to continue.

A few notes.

1. Don't expect a solid conclusion. You have to read book 2.

2. The beginning is a bit jarring but once you understand the flow of the story everything falls into place. This happened for me around 20% of the way into the book.

Overall a great enjoy point. If you are a fan of military games, books, movies like Halo I would recommend this book.

Great read!

Your bog standard Military SciFi, with a little Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and add a small dose of Jedi mind tricks, and Buck Rogers in the 25th century, all mixed in a great big melting pot, big enough to take the world and all its got, and keep it stirring for a hundred years or more, sorry went off on a tangent there for a minute, and there you have it, Gods of War.

It was ok, interesting enough, it kept me engaged. The dialogue and banter between the USMC was amusing at times, but it did verge on the annoying towards the end. I might give the next book a go, to see how old Wolf is getting along, in his new environment.

Very original sci-fi from a Finish and Marine point of view

There are some oops items here and there, but this is an original take on culture vs culture (vs Marine culture) here. Be sure to use the dictionary at the back for Finish cursing and comments. The opening is a bit long in establishing Marine bona fides, but it is a tour of combat experience in current reality set 60 plus years in the future. The tip of the spear, after all, does not change regardless of the kinetics and technology. People die.

This book was to fill in some time till a new one came out in another series. Awesome book.

This book was to fill in for a series I was following. That series has a new book coming out soon. Now I have a problem I have a new series to read. The gunny and his team are an exciting group. The multiple trials he will have to make a decision for him and his team are going to be very interesting. The fact that we have a new culture mixed with the past of earth, actually two cultures or three fighting for independence from an evil one is interesting. This is an awesome series.

I would have been okay with a simpler premise, "Marines in stasis for hundreds of years awaken to a totalitarian socialist regime," sounds pretty good. But on top of that we have a "Fermi's Paradox" barrier event... and it's pretty cool.

I like the "I'm too old for this sh!t" Gunny Mathison as our main protagonist but can't help feeling that the smart-mouthed malcontent Private Stathis steals the show. I laughed out loud a few times over his antics.

I hope this series has legs because I want to see where things go from here.

First time with this author.

I want to rate this one a 3.5 but of course GoodReads does not allow for that.

For me it started a little too slow. I understand we need to world build and all but for my liking a tad too much.

It certainly picks up and gets very good in the second half. Nice cliff hanger ending as well.

Lots of action and cool cyber abilities in the SCBI's. If you are into military space adventures this one has the makings of being a fun series.

Definitely will be reading book two and beyond if it maintains the pace and action of the second half of this one.

Entertaining series

Marines wake from stasis and begin setting things back to rights in a universe where the USA is dead. Nice mix of characters and mythologies, with some familiar elements seen in other sci Fi books (tech from the past misunderstood and superior to current tech in some ways, corrupt politicians, etc). While the end of the series could have been predicted, how it got there was an entertaining series.

Really good setup for a series

This was a really good book to set up a series. There was enough detail in the lead up scenes for the two main groups of characters that by the time they met, it all made sense. This looks to be an interesting universe, not sure it would be fun to live there but it is definitely interesting. I recommend this book and am glad it is part of a series, as these characters definitely have more stories to explore.

Space Marine

It started off slow and then picked up the pace. Very few grammatical errors. The autjor has a good imagination. Being a military person myself, I like the usage of the jargon. It fit quite well. The different language brought a nuance to the story. I also enjoyed the translation at the end of the book. It helps tie things together. Good job. I would read more from this author.

Last Marines?

A very good read. I am impressed with the story line happening here. It is a bummer that only 4 Marines survived? Maybe in the next books more Marines will be found?

The characters in this book are fascinating. The change from Americans to Vikings is pretty cool. I am looking forward to the next book

Fascinating

Interesting characters with well defined personalities in a complex and fascinating universe. The merging of two seemingly widely separated story lines was well handled, and pacing was great. This is military SciFi at its best. I’m eagerly anticipating reading the next one in this series!

As others have attested in their reviews, this book kind of lurches in its start, with some action and character building. Then some creative storytellling elements come together, and everything picks up speed and intensity. I've gotten a little tired of Stathis being told to shut up so much, without any effect. All in all, I'm hooked, and ready for the next book in the series.

Marines vs demons!

Marines be space demons is always fun! This author put a unique twist by wiping out the United States and having socialists take over the world. No country is perfect but we all know that’s bad. Now demons seem to be emerging from space and infecting people similar to doom. Several room jokes as well lol. I liked it!

Suprised how good it was.

I was really impressed with this story. Especially with Gunny Mathison. the story with the Marines was very believeable. I knew my own Gunnys who were like that. So i felt that part in my gut. Semper Fi brothers. From an old ssgt.

Gotta enjoy solid old school mentality and physicality in space and time meeting and joining the same but tweaked future self. Now facing an extinction event that just needs more ass kicking to bring it to an end.
