Sticks and stones may break bones, but words will break hearts.
Lucy, an introverted college student, left her troubled past with hope for the future. But soon, she finds old wounds can still bleed, taking away the little bit of spirit she has left. When a powerful company threatens to bulldoze her home and the small unhoused community she looks after, Lucy refuses to crumble in defeat. She enlists the help of a friend, who has one condition—work for Lucy’s nemesis.
Marco, an ambitious real estate developer, knows the price of desire. As he tries to right the wrongs of his past, he becomes tenacious in his agenda. The last thing he wants is a relationship, but when he comes face-to-face with his best friend's stubborn sister, he doesn’t know what to make of her. And he certainly doesn’t understand her frustrating ability to shut him out while she lets everyone else in.
Sparks fly as they both fight against the pull of passion. But after they’ve been hurt in the past, can they learn to trust again? And could that trust build into something bigger?
The Weight of Our Hearts is a stand-alone, steamy, contemporary romance. If you love angst laced with raw emotion and sprinkled with a dirty talking hero, you’ll love this debut by Nina Bloom.

Welcome to my reading corner of Goodreads! I'm so excited to connect with you. I write spicy, sometimes slow burn, angsty romances. My stories are character driven, so I must always give them a happily ever after (they'll bug me if I don't). Come, make yourself at home and lets talk books!
This was such a beautiful story! I’m still in complete awe of the fact that this was Nina Bloom’s debut book!!! A perfect blend of deep emotions and intrigue that will have you so wrapped up In Lucy and Marco’s world you won’t won’t to leave!!! You know you’ve found a gem when you are able to read a story that includes sensitive subjects that you have lived through yourself and come out the other side feeling validated, seen, respected, and believe it or not, loved. Hands down a five star read and I definitely recommend it! Thank you for an amazing experience Nina Bloom!
The Weight of our Hearts by Nina Bloom is an Impressive Debut. When I review, the first question I ask is: Did the author understand the assignment? That being to produce a book that lives up to the blurb. In this case, this sentence in particular: “The Weight of Our Hearts is a stand-alone, steamy, contemporary romance. If you love angst laced with raw emotion and sprinkled with a dirty talking hero, you’ll love this debut by Nina Bloom.” The answer is yes, Ms. Bloom absolutely understood the assignment and rose to the challenge of it. Tackling difficult themes around emotional abuse, self-esteem, worthiness, housing insecurity, date assault, and eating disorders is no small task, even for the most seasoned author. But Bloom takes them head-on with a compassionate hand and heart. Her characters are all engaging. Lucy and Marco’s steamy chemistry is evident from their first scene and bubbles to full blaze by the time they reach their HEA. I loved it.
References to past entanglements between Sal and Frankie have me hoping for a sequel, or maybe two, since Dylan also presents as someone whose story I would also love to read.
I look forward to watching this author grow and recommend The Weight of Our Hearts, with the usual caution for readers to consider the author’s sensitivity warning.
A debut novel with intensity, strength, heart, and heat, that brings tears of sorrow, joy, and rage is a rare gift. And when I read The Weight of Our Hearts by Nina Bloom, I received that gift. This is more than an enemies to lovers, brothers best friend, age gap trope. This is a heartfelt deep dive into the demons that color our image of ourselves, the devils who put them there, and the angels who bring us back from the brink with love and compassion and understanding.
Bloom brings her characters to life in vivid detail through the single point of view of Lucy, a true curvy girl, who has deep seated issues she battles daily. Bloom’s honest and realistic depiction of her heroine will endear her to readers craving that candid and genuine introspection, without sensationalizing or embellishing the issues she faces. Surrounding Lucy with beautifully crafted supporting characters only enhances the contrast between the angels and demons she embraces and battles.
Seeing Marco only through Lucy’s eyes gives the reader a unique perspective into his character in general, and how the assumptions people make about others are colored by experience and expectations. Following the relationship journey through Lucy’s eyes, mind, and emotions brings the reader directly to the source, feeding the emotions of the story, and bringing the reader along for the ride.
Bloom pulled me in, not only with the story, but how she tells it. Entwining humor with heartbreak, raw and powerful feelings, and engaging dialogue, I heard Lucy’s voice as much as I felt her intensity and fire. The language is both elegant and rough, descriptive and immersive, poetic and raw. And the emotional rollercoaster is 100% worth it for the transformation both main characters experience.
The Weight of Our Hearts will leave you with a massive book hangover, and a willingness to sit through another one to get even more. More of Lucy & Marco’s story, and more of the stories of the amazing characters in their lives. Bloom clearly writes from the heart and soul, bringing a sense of depth and clarity to subjects difficult to approach and explain. And that depth and clarity make the slow burn to complete ignition of this book impossible to forget.
Nina’s debut novel put me through the emotional wringer and I loved every angsty step of the journey! I laughed, I cried and I cheered for Lucy and Marco to get together. And when they did, boy did the heat become an inferno fast! 🔥 This story has so much depth and it’s absolutely delicious! Nina’s writing is beautiful and sometimes almost poetic. Highly recommend 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I’ve just finished this book and my heart is aching from the powerful, poignant world I’ve just reluctantly emerged from. Not sure there are adequate words to do this book justice but I’m sure going to try … This story highlights how a person’s mental health impacts every second of their life. It’s a subject not many spotlight and as someone who suffers significantly with my mental health it’s a subject I am a bit protective of. Nina Bloom has portrayed this issue with care, understanding, empathy, love and the utmost respect. It’s simply spellbinding and ethereal in its beauty. Luciana is a unique and an utterly beautiful and complex character. Her childhood has left her with many deep scars from mental abuse. The feelings portrayed have such depth and emotion you can’t help but feel right there with her, walking side-by-side as she navigates her life. The book reaches out and pulls you in giving you a front row seat to every emotion imaginable. I lost count of the tears I shed as I took note with pride as Luciana fought her way by sheer willpower alone, far better than I cope with my mental health. She inspired me with her beautiful soul, her inner strength despite the negativity her mind tells her, her capacity for love and caring, her ability to light up the room with a single smile. She was awe-inspiring. Marco carries a huge weight of pain and grief from his childhood, which has also shaped him into the man he has become. Marco hides behind a stoic front he allows the world to see. Something I can hold my hand up to. Nina Bloom has portrayed this in a way that shows the deeper meaning behind his behaviour, whilst also showing his softer side. A side that makes our heart skip a bit and our uterus flutter in excitement. Nina Bloom has created an absolutely stunning world. A world that leaves a permanent imprint on your heart. A lasting reminder that you’re not alone in your inner turmoil. A reminder that despite your inner voice filling you with negativity and pain, you can survive, you can make an impression in the lives of the people you come in contact with. This story reminds me of a comment my grief counsellor told me ‘You never know how strong you are, until strength is your only option’. Luciana is the epitome of this for me. Watching Marco support Luciana was so sweet and heart warming. That’s what we all ultimately wish for isn’t it - unwavering support and love. I loved the addition of Sal. Who wouldn’t want a brother who was also your partner-in-crime and your best friend. Marco’s mum, sister and of course Dylan were the cherry on the cake. Their characters adding extra dimensions to an already beautiful story. This story has touched my soul. It’s simply beautiful. Every word written with an obvious love and a true talent for her art. I feel this story has changed me a little. It has made such an impression on me and my thinking. This book should not be missed. It should be treasured for the jewel it is. Can’t recommend highly enough. 50 million star review.
The Weight of Our Hearts by Nina Bloom, which debuted on KU last month, has it all, angst, spice, redemption, love, family, a great book boyfriend, and a happily ever after.
Lucy is a little lost and full of self-loathing. Marco is her older brother's best friend and boss. Lucy learns to navigate her life and begins to change the way she sees herself with the help of the positive female characters who love her. She starts to see Marco in a new light and they become friends. As their friendship turns to love, Lucy and Marco are able to help each other heal and grow together as a couple.
While this story was full of angst, I was happy to see that it had some funny commentary and plenty of spice.
I can’t wait to read more by this author. Hurry up and write, please!
This was the first book I've read by Nina What at amazing storyteller. The book did start a little slow but the pace went faster and faster as we delve into Lucy and Marco's back stories and the buildup of their connection. It was overwhelming at times seeing the verbal damage done to people. But the love of family and friends- that was amazing. Now, when it comes to Lucy's dad= he made me so angry. Love her brother Sal, he's a very good man. Naivety, abuse, growth, love, anger, friends- there is so much depth to this story that needs to be explored again to pick up everything our author wants to share with us.
What an emotional roller coaster of a book and a debut novel at that. I am impressed. Nina has the power to make you feel as if you’re a part of the story. The connection & chemistry of Marco & Lucy was perfection even if it took a minute to realize it. The spice was nice and even caught myself blushing 😊 This story was greatness. Definitely looking forward to more that Nina writes.
This author is new to me and I can't believe i found her as she's just beginning her journey! I LOVE a good age gap story and The Weight Of Our Hearts is a delicious story of two broken souls and what a story it is. It's utterly heartbreaking and before you know it you've read the last page and you've been beautifully put back together again. Luciana/Lucy D'Angelo and Marco Vitale are perfect for each other, it just takes them a little bit to figure it out. These two have a lot of ghosts in their pasts to deal with but it's getting harder and harder for them to fight the temptation. The great thing is, innocent, naive, quiet little Lucy is as fierce as a lioness by the end. This is a fantastic story and I absolutely enjoyed every second of it! "We tear each other apart, but only we hold the glue to piece us back together again".
While the book started a little slow. It was a good read. I loved the characters. The world building could have been a little more. But all in all a really good book.
This book is much more than just a romance! It tackles some tough issues and doesn't gloss over them. In fact, those struggles are what make the characters so real. There's emotion in every line, and it has you living all the ups and downs with Lucy and Marco. The story has angst, sexual tension, and even beautiful personal growth for the heroine. I literally laughed out loud, cursed, and cried my eyes out over this book. It's an emotional rollercoaster, but it's a ride you're going to want to go on again and again!
Nina Bloom is an incredible new talent, and I can't wait to see what she cooks up next!
This is a new to me author and it it won’t be the last I read from her! This book was utterly fantastic and emotional. Please read the trigger warning though. This book was a slow burn, but I didn’t mind it due to how good the book was. I loved Luciana, aka Lucy, and Marco together. I loved that once they were together how he helped her realize her abilities. Hopefully there will be other books?
"My willpower is a temperamental bitch; sometimes her restraint is iron-clad, but most times she's a floozy for food." -Lucy
First of all, the content warning. Not what the warnings are about just simply the author stating that your heart will be utterly obliterated. That there will be a happy ending (there is!) but first you will experience all the feels.
"See you on the other side. . ." - Nina Bloom
Lucy's trying to move on with her life. Moving past a traumatic childhood along with a great loss. Being an independent woman, if you will. Only running from the past only goes so far before it catches up to you. One thing she cannot run from anymore is Marco. . . Her older brother's best friend and someone Lucy didn't want to see again.
He's not making her life any easier, being a grumpy sunshine at that. But when life decides to rip the rug out from under Lucy, she's forced to turn to Marco. Marco's family is the ONLY reason Lucy will even consider the idea of working for him. Sparks fly and tension builds between the two. But will Lucy's past fully consume her? And will Marco ever move past the point of being a grouchy troll?
This book. . .this book is one that I read in eBook form but I want a hardcover! The story was absolutely amazing along with the very huge healing journey. I could tell that this was very much a healing journey for not only Lucy but the author as well. Whether Lucy's traumas reflected the author's or not, I could just tell the healing and moving forward was powerful!
Absolutely loved the strong female leads! The group had me laughing, crying, and cheering. I enjoyed how three women bonded to Lucy in the course of one meeting. Lucy's dealing with mental issues along with body image issues. Lucy is a curvy woman, but social media and the world's standards discard Lucy and her curves. However! There are three women who will clearly do anything for Lucy. Seeing right through things and telling it to her face.
"Now, where were we? Oh, yes, the matter of your insecurity. It's bullshit." - Carmella
"Spill, or I'll drive over there and waterboard you with eggnog." - Frankie
"Free yourself from your past, honey. Untangle the chains of someone else's expectation. Someone else dug that hole you fell into, but only you can climb out of it." - Dylan
Dylan's line is one of my favorites from the book! Something I needed to read for myself, honestly. Each woman brings something different to the table for Lucy. But the bottom line is the bond that was formed amongst them is incredible.
Some of the things Lucy had to deal with and learn from hit close to home. Felt a lot of things to a personal level and I even teared up on multiple occasions while reading this book. I was so into this book I read it in the course of one night! Nina did an amazing job bringing to life Lucy and the other very strong female leads.
Of course there were strong male leads! Not saying anything against the male cast. Though a few of them I have more than just a few words for them. . . I loved Lucy's nickname for Marco. I enjoyed getting to know him better and seeing the deeper side of his character. He's grumpy, maybe a little too uptight, but he loves his mom and isn't ashamed to receive her love.
This book is a SLOW burn. The author even warns you before you just dive in. I will say she was right, it was worth the wait! There's MF action as well as cussing, I imagine you could figure that out from some of the quotes above. Violence and some deep trauma scenes. The author does it in a very tasteful manner so as to feel it, keeping it short. Enemies to lovers trope with an age gap and close proximity.
I could keep gushing about this read but I don't want to give anything away. Just know that this is an intense journey of healing. Only sometimes you need to be reminded that in this big world, you're not alone. You have people to lean on as well as books that help you to move forward. Even if the books are far from self help books. We all heal differently and at different speeds. It's not a race, it's your journey.
Enjoy the read with a happy ending, I promise, and give the author some stars!
This book was absolutely so good! I felt every emotion right along with the characters. I laughed and cried while reading this book. I was so proud of Luciana’s growth throughout the book. At the beginning, she’s very insecure, but you really get to see her grow into her own and I love the growth she has. Marco has made it to my list of favorite book boyfriends.
Pros- True growth of the FMC. She goes from insecure and very stand offish, avoiding people and not giving anyone a chance to really letting people in and making friends. As someone who has literally 4 friends who have all been in my life for years, I ranged to this storyline very much. It’s really hard to put yourself out there and trust people not to hurt you. Lucy really became one of my favorite FMCs. Age gap done right. There was no weirdness, she wasn’t really like a sister to him, feelings came naturally. Just the whole age gap done right. Brothers best friend- I don’t want to spoil much from this trope but I was so happy with how the author wrote it. Forced Proximity- let’s just say I screamed when they had to get closer. Happy screams, but screamed lol. Very well written, very deep characters, Plus size representation- I loved how Luciana was written. She was plus size and she didn’t necessarily love her body, especially at the beginning, but she worked through it. And her whole internal dialogue wasn’t talking about how much she hated herself the whole time. You also saw her gain confidence in herself as the book went on. I have DNF’d books for this. So this was perfect. No third act break up- I’m a sucker for groveling as much as the next girl, but I also love when there is no breakup and they work through the issue TOGETHER. I won’t say much on this part again, just again, perfection. The Spice factor was really good. It all felt natural. Sometimes with some books, I’m like do these couples speak? Cause every page is spice and that’s fine, I love some of those books, but this book really let you and the characters get to know each other and sealed and intimate personal bond. While also having amazing spice when they were both ready. The only con I have is I wish it was dual POV- there were several moments I wanted to know Marco’s thoughts and as he shared more later I was like dang, I would have loved to know even more in depth. But no, I will for sure be buying this book. I will definitely be eagerly awaiting Nina Bloom’s next novel. Such a good book for a debut novel and for sure deserves a read. I could go on and on about this book and all the things I loved.
This book hit home with me. It was well written and you can tell it to as written from the heart. Lucy and Marco are a great couple that’s real and relatable with many self esteem issues and problems that everyday people face. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did
First off, I give props for breaking the romance mold by making the heroine (Lucy) pudgy, flawed, and imperfect, characteristics that probably EVERY woman can relate to. And of course, pairing the heroine with a sexy man (Marco) who doesn't give a damn about weight is a sure-fire way to melt the hearts of all of us plain Janes out there reading the story. Now, I do think that some of Lucy's actions didn't seem to accurately represent a girl with low self-esteem, such as how willing she was to throw herself at Marco, or her various displays of confidence despite her thinking that she wasn't. Since I don't think too highly of myself just the same, I feel like I ought to know. I guess I expected less spitfire and more passive. However, I did like her overall goal as it was quite touching. Plus, I appreciate the author's warning about potential triggers in this book, as some events in this story may be hard to stomach for certain folks.
Thought-provoking subject matter aside, the story itself was fairly generic with predictable elements that I've read plenty of time in other romances. Regular girl with low (ish) self-esteem who doesn't know her worth until a rich guy teaches it to her, after she saves him from his own demons, of course. Said guy dotes his riches to solve her problems because he's "seen the light" of her angelic ways and becomes a changed/better man thanks to her and, blah, blah, blah. I saw the ending coming a mile away, knew some facility would be built to accommodate Lucy's vision and save the day. Other formulas were present too, including the random "villains" who hurt the heroine, both mentally and physically. It's just, I've read it all before.
I would hardly classify this book as enemies-to-lovers, though. Sure, the two had their squabbles, but it was remarkably tame for the most part. Plus, there was nothing convincing enough to justify the supposed "enemy" moments. With the exception of the final chapter, this story is written entirely from Lucy's perspective. And unfortunately, without an accompanying narrative from Marco, you don't really know his feelings on matters until he's actually saying--or rather gushing-- it all to Lucy, which mostly doesn't even happen until the latter portion of the book. I don't quite grasp why Lucy started loving Marco all of a sudden, or vice versa. Lucy was literally ONLY thinking constant naughty thoughts towards him for most of the way through, and Marco? Well, he had no narration, but I guess he admitted to having a lingering crush, so that's something I guess.
As the story carried on, things just started to bother me, so much so that eyerolls were my go-to gestures. As if Lucy's rampant lusting over the supposed "enemy" Marco wasn't enough of a pain to CONSTANTLY read about (repeatedly!), there was also the point where declarations of love stopped being endearing and just became unbearably incessant. Whether the worshipfulness of one to the other was in Marco's dialogue or Lucy's thoughts, it was just so much overboard for me that it stopped having meaning. It almost felt like the author was trying too hard to sell a singular idea: that broken people find love. And while I'm all for that, it doesn't mean I want that conclusion waterboarded over my head. I wanted the story to just sort of sell itself organically from all angles so I can better accept it. Kinda hard to do, though, when you've only got one person (Lucy), telling it.
Anyway, this is a long-winded review, but...there it is. Nothing really blew me away in this book like I always hope, so it'll inevitably fade into obscurity where I'll never think of it again. Oh well.

This book is full of all the emotions. Lucy and her older brothers best friend are getting to know each other better and developing a relationship. This book really messed with my feelings and I had trouble putting it down.
The weight of my hearts is by far the most amazing book and I wouldn’t even believe that this is a debut novel of Nina. I’m pretty sure that women is a experienced writer in disguise. I was so deeply in love with the characters. They were so deep and so raw and so beautiful. It was like they were actually real, not words on my kindle. I’m very proud to have a friend like Nina in my life to have a opportunity to read her book before it was published as a ARC reader.
This is what you can expect from the book: slow burn, a curvy sassy heroine who is worshiped by her grumpy hot boss who loves talking dirty.
There are scenes dealing with an eating disorder, sexual assault, and mention of suicide so I ask you to check all the content warning before reading it.
I adore the characters, Luciana and Marco with all my heart and their journey is since they were kids makes me tear up because they didn’t deserve to go through what they went through. I really like it the side character. The dynamic of Marco’s sister and mother with Luciana and how supportive they are to her. I can’t wait for the sequel in the Heart Duology. We all deserve more of this explosively beautiful characters.
I love you, Nina. My heart burst with happiness and pride which is solely reserved for you.
What a wonderful book! I love the cover art and think it perfectly represents the book! As a women who deals with eating disorder this book have me all the feels! I would recommend this book to anyone in need of a fast read! I couldn’t put it down!
Nina took me on a ride full of emotions with this story and I loved every bit of it! It’s so beautifully written and you can tell she truly wanted the readers to feel what Lucy and Marco are going through. It is a slow burn and I didn’t think I’d like it but I promise it’s so worth it. It’s definitely a must read.
Wow, what an amazing debut! This book was so great, it was a rollercoaster and kept me cheering on Lucy. Great chemistry and was a wonderful enemies to lovers story that I’ll be recommending to everyone.
Such an amazing book!! Her writing is amazing, she has a way with words!! I cant wait to see what else she has in store!! And the cover is gorgeous!!! GO read this book!!
Wow! What more can I say about this powerful, emotional rollercoaster? I was so addicted, this was all I wanted to read. I needed to be in their story and I didn’t want to miss one minute. When the story came to an end, I wanted to cry. There was not a single moment that I would have skipped. This had me constantly intrigued.
The chemistry and heat between Lucy and Marco are off the charts. At times, I caught myself flushed and fanning my face. Looking around to see if anyone noticed. Lucy is such a likable and relatable character. She is real and flawed. Her quirky and fun humor plus realistic insecurities (without being annoying) make her an interesting character to read.
This blew my mind when it came to a debut novel. Highly recommend!
Nina Bloom brought life, beauty and wisdom in the words she put on the page. I have never highlighted so many quotes in one book. Her writing allowed me to see and feel.
Lucy was beaten down. Zero self-esteem, but through friendship and love she was able to build up some confidence. She grew so much in this book. Being someone who has insecurities about my size and weight I could relate to her.
Marco's one mission in his life was to make his late father's business successful. He was shmexy, but arrogant. He carried his own pain and through Lucy he was able to work through the weight of his past.
Lucy and Marco's relationship was a slow burn, but once it heated up, keep the ice water handy. The love they had each other was tangible. Expect to have lots of emotions while you read The Weight of our Hearts. I absolutely recommend this book.
The Weight of our Hearts gave me all the feels! Great job, Nina Bloom!
Lucy is the poster child of so many women... beat down by life, but still standing and fighting, even when it all seems impossible. .
And Marco, like so many men, keeps his true emotions bottled up, but is actually releasing them in other inappropriate, controlling ways.
Marco and Lucy are perfect for each other in the sense that they become each other's life line. Their hearts connect and they fight each other's demons of the past. I love how Marco loved and reassured her. And I love that Lucy learned to trust and freely love him, without losing who she is at her core.
The love scenes were definitely steamy, whew🥵! The slow burn almost killed me! But I got my HEA.
This book is one of those rare gems you feel the gambit of emotions while reading, but ultimately, its message is clear … learn to love yourself just the way you are.
I know that’s not an easy feat and Lucy’s struggles with self-confidence and self-worth are both painful at times and inspiring. Her struggles came across as believable and made you root for her from page one.
Now Marco … he’s the man every woman should be so lucky to find. Once his protective exterior starts to crack, we see the caring, patient man he truly is. The way he supports and loves Lucy unconditionally melts your heart.
This is a beautiful debut by Nina Bloom. I can’t wait to read more from her.
This is the first book that I’ve read by this author, and it’s her debut at that! Wow, talk about hooking you from the very beginning and holding you captive until the very end. I love a good enemies to lovers with a dirty talking alpha and this book didn’t disappoint. This book does touch in some possible disturbing or trying topics so please check those before reading if you have any triggers. This was an emotional read and I can’t wait to read more from her. Bloom has done an amazing job on describing topics that are hard to write and I felt that much closer to Lucy and Marco for that. I’m in awe of Bloom.
Lucy is such a relatable character. She’s been through so much and guards herself from feeling and experiencing that again. Then Marco, her brothers best friend starts ruining things for her. Marco is her boss, and as they spend more time together, they see each other in a different light. And they fall, fast. Steam picks up and it becomes such an emotional ride.
Full of chemistry, self worth, steam, angst, tension, tears, smiles, heartache, trauma, insecurities, healing, love, friends, family and so much more. Can’t wait yo read more from Bloom.
