This series keeps traipsing along at its own pace, with some minor plot revelations and some little relationship developments doled out like breadcrumbs to keep me tagging along after. This volume is better than last, and I hold out hope that one day something will happen to reward all my patience.
At this point, I'd be happy if some of the main characters just got last names. There were two opportunities this volume that the author awkwardly sidestepped with a giant blurry computer screen and a sports announcer who narrates a football game like this: "An amazing catch at the 25-yard line by South Pines wide receiver, David!" I don't attend a lot of sporting events, but I don't think that's how they do it.
"Even if all evidence points to a reality where there is no hope, I should still try to see the world with my eyes wide open...I need to move forward, trusting that somehow, even if I can't find hope, hope will find me."
2020 Challenge: a book published the month of your birthday
with each volume i get more and more frustrated by the way in which Cassie's hyperfixation on diet culture is portrayed. this girl is so on the way into an eating disorder that all of my alarm bells are ringing at this point. leaving a statement like "i'm only eating an apple for lunch because of the dance tomorrow" completely unaddressed is concerning and dangerous and wrong, especially because this is a book series that is also aimed at kids.
This is an on going series. This is volume 7 after all. But if you have read the other six books, then you certainly want to read this one, of course, as we get closer to solving the mystery of the Space Boy.
Of course, other stuff is going on, but we learn a little more about Amy, and a little more about the strange boy she wants to help.
3 stars | This series is interesting, but it's slow as hell. I don't get how it's supposed to grab kids' attention. I just want to know what's going on.
I feel like we're finally getting some answers, but at the same time, there are some issues with this story. I agree with another reader who talked about Cassie's dieting starting to sound more like an eating disorder and I hope this is addressed in the next volume. Amy is having a hard time thinking about anyone other than Oliver and it's really starting to affect her friendships.
this is literally insane. ... but it's also super cute?? and heartwarming? idk. i love it. im just kind of scared right now for all the kiddos. AND PENNY. pls pls pls no one hurt pennyyyyy.
This volume moved the story along a bit better than volume 6. While we don’t know exactly what Dr Kim and Oliver and the unknown military organization are up to we now can see a bit more of the mystery revealed.
Amy’s friends are really sidelined here. There’s almost nothing about David and Cassie. Poor Zeph makes his move. Though Schaefer and Tammie finally have something to add to the story.
Once again while it doesn’t impact the story overall, I was annoyed that Amy’s recording files show a year of 3377 which is crazy considering how few changes have been made in technology on Earth in over 1,300 years. Have scientists only focused on setting up communications technology and living spaces for space colonists and just ignored everything else on Earth? Basically life on Earth looks exactly like now except people wear net glasses that connect to the internet. Wall plugs, trucks, garbage cans, refrigerators, all look just like they do right now. It’s bizarre.
Overall I still really like the story. I just think it would benefit from a binge reading episode instead of waiting months between volumes.
Space Boy heats up! After running luke-warm for several volumes, Space Boy abruptly has action and plot! Amy snoops on Oliver and Dr. Kim's move out and discovers all sorts of secrets. Oliver plugs in at night! Dr. Kim is building robots and has a gun! The military is helping with the move for some reason!
Meanwhile, Tammie and Schaefer finally become a thing and Zeph reveals his feelings to Amy . Beside the point! I've enjoyed the interpersonal stuff in Space Boy, but always felt that it came at the expense of an actual story. Now that the actual story is here, I really can't think about anything else.
Ooh, a lot more action in this one leading us a bit closer to some answers!
Amy is wrapped up in the mystery of Oliver...and poor Zeph is being strung along. :( (I'm proud of Zeph's courage at the end of this volume. Hopefully, it'll be better for him in the long run.) Amy spies on Oliver (and Dr. Kim), which ends up being super dangerous and a bit more confusing.
Including a weird alien thing that visits Amy in her dreams & promises to help her & Oliver(??), and then makes her forget it all... Eek!
Age: 13+ Genre: sci-fi, coming of age, ya Content: clean; some bizarre/mildly disturbing elements Language: none
Review: this volume took quite a dark turn. There are definitely some weird sci-fi elements being introduced, which is fine but might be a bit scary for young readers. The suspense is definitely building and the plot is deepening as well.
So I think the series has me hooked now … will eventually catch up and then await the new releases! Innocent relationships, complex relationships, and for sure some science and sci fi twists and turns now …
Another phenomenal installment. I just really love this art, the characters, the story, the intrigue. It’s just so well done and a lot of people sleep on this graphic novel series. Please ready Volume 1 if you haven’t already!
This series continues to mesmerize me. We finally get some huge plot developments in Volume 7 as Amy gets more aggressive with her quest for answers about who Oliver really is. In a Lois Lane reminiscent solo stake out, Amy barely escapes an encounter with an unknown military force while attempting to spy on Oliver’s home. The risk earns her a huge revelation about Oliver, however.
Also- May we talk about that terrifying dreamscape encounter with a skin crawling omnipotent-esk being?? Just as long held questions are being answered, we now have so many more dropped into our laps. What is this creature? Is it real or a figment of Amy’s subconscious? Is it benevolent or malicious?
Amy’s meddling also starts to have unfortunate consequences for one of her friends, potentially amping up the danger and the pace of this usually cozy and quiet series. To balance out the sci-fi drama, South Pines High is in the midst of homecoming week, so enter all the everyday high school happenings of parades, football, and dances that come along with it. I love these slice of life, mundane plot lines as much as I do the main mystery of Oliver. (Yay- Schafer and Tammie! Sorry, my lad, Zeph.) I, along with so many other readers, am hoping that Cassie’s unhealthy body image and diet-centric approach will be soon addressed. I would love to see a lot of character growth for her. Lastly, the artwork! Those panel layouts are 👌🏼. Looking forward to enjoying Volume 8.
Amy starts to put together some weird clues about Oliver, and decides to investigate further with a drone she borrows from Tammie. Amy's so absorbed in this she accidentally neglects some of her friends who are swept up in Spirit Week and Homecoming drama.
Ahh, we finally get some better clues about Oliver, while the mystery also gets a new twist. I liked the way some of Amy's different friend groups bond in her absence. My heart goes out to poor Zeph but we saw it coming. Can't wait for the next one. Students will be very excited that this is hitting our shelves this week. Space Boy has a very good fan base among our middle and high school students.
Notes on content: No language issues. No sexual content beyond a little peck on a cheek. Some students are in potentially dangerous situations with the military guarding Oliver. It is just hinted at though. Nothing happens on page.
I seem to be reading a lot of books out of order this year, don't I? I saw this in my school library (we're open, but this was my first time in the library since.. a long time), and it was on the new books shelf, next to the second, third, and fourth, so that combined with the fact that I was in rush made me think this was actually the first. At some point during reading this, I flipped to the back and there I saw that this was not actually the first and was the seventh. However, I still enjoyed this book and loved the illustration style and colors. There was a lot of emotion that was conveyed well, and I'll admit I jumped at one of the scarier parts. (Then I read it again) I definitely understood it enough to enjoy it, and I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the Space Boy series soon! If I have time, I'll add more to this review after catching up on the previous books.
i am uneasy. amy’s connection to oliver is impacting her negatively, and not just in the way oliver thinks it is. she’s sneaking out and spying, and she’s forgetting promises to friends (like going to the hoco game with zeph). it’s impacting her friends negatively too. i like oliver, of course i do, but i don’t like how his presence in amy’s life is affecting her. at the beginning, when it was just “why are you friends with to that weirdo” and then sneaking around on the roof, that was fine. but then she started skipping out on things. don’t think this is healthy, girl.
Amy is still trying to find out about Oliver who is moving. She needs to know what he thinks of her, does he hate her, is that why he's moving away? When she spies on him with a borrowed drone she finds out something extremely interesting . In the process the drone becomes a target and things get crazy. The relationship between Oliver and Amy is unique and draws you into this intelligent and exciting story. I love these books.
Somehow I missed Space Boy 6...and didn't realize until I was more than half through this one (It's been several months since I read #5. And there must not have been much plot advancement in #6). Whatever... THIS one was really good. The plot thickens. Now I absolutely NEED #8. Gotta know what happens!!!
This volume shows real progress: we get an idea of WHAT Oliver really is, Zeph confesses, and a mysterious being shows up. The sci-fi aspect has been amped up to 10 here, and I’m excited to see where it goes. The story still has its colorful, slice-of-life innocence intact, but I wouldn’t be surprised if things begin getting darker
