This was so disappointing, which makes me sad because I did enjoy the first book in the series. However, I have never made so many notes in a book, and that's not a good thing…
For starters, the childhood love thing would have been far more believable if they were at least over the age of 10. 13 would have been believable, but 15 would have made sense and would have made the story so much better. It was really hard to resonate with these characters being in love with someone since they were 7 years old, going no contact for more than a decade, then still being in love after all this time. I mean, Sofia even says she was too young to grasp prices at that age, but somehow she could grasp being out of her mind in love and believing promises to get together years later with someone? If they were just a bit older it would make so much more sense.
Then, there were a ridiculous amount of weird plot lines. We have Sofia's ex-boyfriend who's now dating her sister. We have Aaron who's mom Parent-Trapped him and sent him to live with his dad, only for Aaron to show up and have a single chapter at the beginning of the book to get his closure and it's never mentioned again. We have girls disappearing in Sofia's small town in Germany and she feels guilty because she could've been one of them. We have Sofia thinking she killed her Grandpa when she was 12 so she refused to live in the US again (except for in college?) even though she actually didn't kill him and he had a heart attack. Finally, we have Sofia's sister confessing that she was only with Leon to prevent Sofia from getting back with a shitty guy. Can you see why this is a bit much? They were all so disconnected and it was beyond strange. Like, pick one storyline that Sofia struggles with and intertwine it with the entire story.
The bad communication trope is also one of my least favourite things in the world. Sofia wanting to be with Aaron but can't and not explaining why for half the book? She kept saying how much she dreams of him and how much she wants him and she knows he wants her but they just can't be together. Why not??? Then finding out that the big reason they can't be together is because she thought she killed her Grandpa so now she refuses to live in the state of New York and has been ghosting her grandma ever since? Then we find out she actually didn't kill her grandpa so her begging her parents to move back to Germany and her keeping her distance from Aaron was for nothing? She was just a very unlikable character that did not resonate with me at all.
Finally, Aaron was romantic, but the way he talked about Winter (essentially uses her for sex until he could be with Sofia) and his lack of action when he found out his sister was suicidal was not a good look. I also didn't really resonate with him.
In the end, they loved each other for what exactly? It seemed like they just loved each other because of the nostalgia, they never really said what they love about each other.
Also - Sofia becomes an author? She mentions reading like twice in the book and occasionally writing, but never serious enough that you think she is actually passionate about it.
