Monster Haven #3

Roaming Dungeon

Rate this book
’Tis the season to be jolly… assuming jolly means murderous.
Dollitrice Grandmeir never thought her village would turn into a dungeon, or that she’d battle a Kaiju Overlord with the help of her giant Tortoise. Now she’s got an all-new weirdness on her radar. The Twelve Days of Crisismas are coming, and without a special brew of Eggnog, Taffy and the Ex-Mas Posse will transform into horrific Grumpus monsters, annihilating Dolli’s dungeon from the inside out.

That special brew—Egg Noggin-Fogger—is just what the Neckbeards ordered. The guild of heroes raids Monster Haven relentlessly to get their hands on the whiskey blend, pushing back the Posse’s production and putting the whole brew at risk. If they can’t get a few days of peace and quiet, they’ll have no choice but to flee Monster Haven to prepare for the horrific transformation.

Dolli must take her dungeon on the road to avoid the raids, all while searching for her own game ender: Sherkahn’s Shillelagh, a tool of the heroes’ own making that has the power to close the portals to her world once and for all. Can they evade the Neckbeards long enough to complete the brew, or will Dolli have to send her merry elf additions into the wilds to protect her dungeon and finish the quest for the staff?

Dolli and her dungeon are facing new troubles, this time from the inside out. Her elves the ex-mas posse warned her that with the coming of the twelve days of Christmas they would turn into Grumpus monsters and be as evil as hell, showing no mercy to anyone, be these friend or foe unless they get to brew and drink their special blend of whiskey, which they called Egg-Noggin-Fogger. Dolli procured all the ingredients to make this brewing possible before the worse happened but the heroes known as neckbeards kept on stealing the brew, so she figured that the only way to keep everyone safe was to turn herself into a roaming dungeon and keep on the move with the help of Fjaar, her giant tortoise. She also wanted to find the artefact known as the Shillelagh of Sherkahn which would enable her to close the heroes portal once forever through their very own creation. Dolli would do anything to keep the citizens safe but will she manage such a difficult task this time around? I love the excitement in this series, the creatures and the craziness they find themselves in as they struggle against marauding heroes to save their lives.

The finale - Roaming Dungeon - sees Dolli contemplating the ultimate method of protecting her dungeon from gamers - severing the ties with the game world forever. In this fairly epic yet short quest, Dolli has to muster her forces once more to get a mythical magical object, while protecting her dungeon (and the newly allied … ahem … festive elves and their vital brews) from gamers.
This book had some glaring plot holes for me and some aspects of the culmination just didn’t ring true and seemed to contradict previous motives or risks.

A fun and entertaining ending to the story. The plot was a little predictable but this last instalment gave all the characters a chance to really shine a show their personality.

This Dungeon Core trilogy is sure to please. JD Astra doesn't let the pace slip as we plunge back into book 3 the Roaming Dungeon...
Dalli finds that her woes aren't over after her last victory. She's still trying to find her footing with her last upgrade as her Dungeon Core abilities get stronger. And this time she dealing with both human (Hero's) who keep plundering her Dungeon for potions and the unrest as monsters within her Dungeon still don't trust her judgment and want to make their own way!
So grab up the Audible copies while they're available free.
Ohhhh and Kegan you are so naive! LOLOL

Roaming Dungeon

Dollitrice has a plan. The heroes are the ones who have been causing all of the trouble. They are the ones that have to go. She is planning on using the hero’s own magic against them to close their portals forever. She thinks that she has figured out a way to do it as well.

This was a fun trilogy! All three of the books were shorter, so they all jumped to the action pretty quickly. Honestly, there was only one (probably insignificant) loose end that I wanted tied up. At the time I listened, the entire trilogy was included with an Audible subscription. Judy Alice Lee does a great job with the narration!

A satisfying end

Jess Astra has tortured us with a delightful mini-series that I’m sure, most of us wish wasn’t coming to an end. It’s premise from start to finish was a cute and endearing journey - perfect for those who love the Dungeoncore, Gamelit, or LitRPG genre. Highly recommended for individual who are new to the genre as a whole as it is a lite read that doesn’t overwhelm the reader. My favorite part most definitely would be the ending portion, where a certain character got their just desserts.

A thoroughly enjoyable series!

I breezed through reading along while listening to this entire series. Wonderful narrator. I loved that the NPCs turned dungeon mobs did things like knowingly kite the heroes. Absolutely a book series for gamers, stuffed full of Easter eggs. I feel like it could also be enjoyable by others, but I can't say for certain, as I'm absolutely a lifelong gamer nerd. 😂 All three books are excellent quick reads, and I was left satisfied and wanting more from this author and narrator in the future!

Astra knocked this one out of the park. Taffy is my new favorite character and it's hilarious that he has to drink an alcoholic concoction to prevent turning into a huge monster and, of course, the "heroes" are raiding the brewery constantly to complete a quest. It's brilliantly put together and hilarious and heart felt at the same time. That's not an easy balance to pull off and she does it. I'd highly recommend Monster Haven to any fans of fantasy.

Dollitrice plans to block Heros access to the portals to enter her world, making this reader cringe a bit as she's an NPC, so does she exist without the players? I love that I wondered for a good part of this book, if the programmers had actually tapped into an alternate reality, and Dolli could actually achieve her goals.

Katrina, the kid hero is my favorite of this whole series. I wonder how my preteen would react if the NPCs in his favorite games started to act like real people.

This was just a fun ride. I absolutely recommend this series. It's short, fun and wraps up really well.

Cosy (in my opinion) dungeon crawler. I absolutely love this series, especially the narrator Judy Alice Lee. Wow, what a performance. The writing is easy and fun, but Lee brings the story to a whole new level.

It's fun, cosy, light-hearted my only grievance is that there aren't any more books in the series.

This review is for the audiobook. I could not add a new edition for it, so I am reviewing it here.

The arc of the trilogy finds a satisfactory conclusion with this book. I hope there will be more in the series. I liked the way the author allowed the characters room to grow and change.
