Me: Sounds good. Shoot me your address sometime this week. Oh, and by the way, how’s your grandmother?
Stacey: Oh, she died!
My customers are smiling and satisfied, our profits are up for the seventh year in a row, and I have the best friends and family a girl could ask for.
Life is good.
“You should come on my dates with me.”
“What?’ I repeat on a laugh. “I’m not into three-ways, Sam.”
“Pity,” he says, then shakes his head to negate the joke. “Seriously, though, if you sat nearby and observed the dates, you could tell me what I’m doing wrong.”
“Like a wing-woman?” I ask, tilting my head in question.
“Don’t tell Jared what I said about you being my best friend, okay? And definitely don’t tell Sophie. We all know she can’t keep her mouth shut.”
“Lose my number, asshole,” she growls, then stalks away.
What we have is easy and perfect, without all the angst, tension, and uncertainty of a romantic
relationship.
And just like that, Sam has disarmed my loner brother and dragged him a little closer to the land of the living. Swinging my knee out, I bump it against his beneath the table. He returns the nudge, and I can’t hide my smile.
