The Oregon Territory, January 1851: Nora Cole didn’t realize it would be this hard. She thought had found a balance of communication with Jasper Stephens when she gave him permission to court her. But the constant work and harsh winter of this new country has put obstacles between them she’s not sure they can overcome. For all the stories of how these brave pioneers got to Oregon, look for the book series Courage on the Oregon Trail by A.T. Butler.
The continuation of Nora & Jasper's story is filled with love, laughter, tears, fighting (verbal - between sisters), and illness. Nora struggles with anxiety and her self-esteem, choosing between what she wants and what she thinks is "proper" causes her distress when a bit of gossip spreads about her. It's tricky to balance her unique sister's needs, the needs of the town and her own. In a difficult situation, she must make a choice. Will she allow Jasper to help? It's a wonderful story with characters of depth, a plot that is paced quite well and a satisfying conclusion. This book works as a stand-alone, but reading their story in the original series will give a lovely background (and it's good, too.) I recommend both series, tbh. With that, I'm off to the next. -ncv
Nora: "My reputation! I must be seen as so perfect and womanly!! No matter what!!!"
Amy: "I'm so wacky and self absorbed. I NEED PEOPLE TO RISK THEIR LIVES FOR SUGAR FOR MY BIRTHDAY CAKE!!! Sugar!!! Sugar!!!! MY BIRTHDAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT!!!!! You have a life beyond me and that makes you terrible, Nora. SUUUUUUGGGGGAAAARRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
These sisters are so. freaking. annoying. They traveled with the Hudson sisters all that way and yet learned nothing. Amy, at 15, is such a selfish baby; Nora isn't wrong to call her out on her crap. Nora, living on the freaking frontier, is way too worried about her reputation, to the point shes willing to sacrifice love and her own freaking life rather than be thought poorly of.
The only good character in this book is Jasper; he gets a star all of his own. But damn, he deserves better.

This is Jasper and Nora’s story after the group settled from their trail to Oregon. Hard work, uncertain weather and terrible life threatening illness that is being past from one to another. Jasper and Nora have sweet on each other for a while and Jasper has been working hard as an apprentice for the blacksmith. Nora works tirelessly for the community and now she works hour upon end helping those with this disease. Nora’s younger sister, Amy is spoiled thru and thru and creates unending trouble in their family. When Amy gets her feeling hurt she runs away and Jasper and Nora are the only ones available to rescue her. You will enjoy discovering how they find their happily ever after.
The story was okay but I could never relax as I read the story. The constant bickering and misunderstandings between the sisters was a constant throughout the story. It never ended. Amy was uncomfortably rude a blunt to her sister. Amy came across as selfish and immature. The older sister, Annie stayed focused on how her feminine reputation appeared to the community. She came across as prideful and self absorbed.
If the author meant for these sisters to come across as I described, I would say the mission was accomplished. I did like Jasper and the parents of the sisters.
I anticipated this story with so much joy. Nora caused me so much anxiety with her neediness. Jasper is a Godsent to withstand all the unnecessary things she place upon herself. Amy is a bit over the top but she's likeable. I just can't relate to Horas need to be liked by everyone. She has a servants heart but why do she need so much recognition for whatever she does to help.
Nora Cole is one blessed girl to have a beau in their new settlement that wants to marry her. Her sister Amy is always causing her problems demanding her time for her. Nora is a help to all the Valleys people and helps everyone, esp after bravely trudging thru snow looking for that lost sister‼️
Many parts of this book was very frustrating There was lots of repetition from the main character obsessing over things, useless chapters of rhetoric - I guess to fill space - and needless anxiety, probably also to fill space. Wasn't really a story per se. Disappointing.
I enjoyed the characters that I knew from the travel along the Oregon Trail. Beginning a life of all these families that traveled together and enduring a hard winter without totally being prepared for it. As they rely on Fort Vancouver for supplies or trading among them. It is a community relying on each other with a love story woven in among this story.
Not one of the better books by this author but still a good read. Nora can be a bit stubborn and she assumes too much which irritated me. I love Jasper, he is a good young man trying to do right for his love and her family.
The 1st three books were excellent reading. I for one enjoy reading about the early days of western bound. I know this is fiction but at same time you realize what the pioneers went through too full fill their dreams.
Another good book in this series. A story about one of families that made it to Oregon. Sisters that love and argue with each other. Story ends with happiness
