Seventeen-year-old Sam, the daughter of a New England heiress, has tried hard to fulfill her father’s dying “Take care of your mother for me.” Not an easy job. When her impulsive, romance-writing mom announces her engagement to a man whose last heiress wife died under suspicious circumstances, Sam tries to dissuade her mother. But her mom is convinced she’ll finally have the “Happily Ever After” she writes about.
And then Sam’s life implodes. Her mom’s fiancé turns up dead, and a mountain of circumstantial evidence points to Sam as the killer. On trial for murder, she fights to prove her innocence with the help of her boyfriend’s dad, an ex-homicide cop.
Just when things are looking especially bleak, Sam uncovers evidence she never expected to find. She faces a tough At what point does the price of loyalty become too high?
Sam made a promise to her dying father that she would protect her mother and look out for her. But that is harder and harder to do when Sam’s mother continues to make bad choices—like Adam, the younger man she met and quickly (too quickly for Sam’s liking) became engaged to. Adam’s last wife died unexpectedly and suspiciously, and Sam knows that Adam is just out for her mother’s money- even though her mother won’t hear it. When Adam is shot and killed in the house, Sam is quickly charged with his murder and everyone, including her own mother, believes Sam is guilty. But Sam is convinced someone else is behind the murder and she is determined to uncover the culprit- and save herself.
Lynn Slaughter’s newest YA suspense novel, “Deadly Setup”, is smart and entertaining, pulling readers in from the very first page. Sam is a likable character, grieving the death of her father and suffering from the responsibility of caring for a narcissistic mother. Not only must a teenaged Sam deal with an impending murder trial where her whole future is on the line, but she is faced with the challenge of a new romance, and the taught relationship of an uncaring and unsupportive single parent. Sam instantly garners empathy and support from the reader, generating the whole gamut of emotions with every page.
The novel is told from Sam’s perspective, although there is a snippet at the front of the novel where we hear from the unidentified killer, making it obvious that Sam is innocent from the get-go. Slaughter has the ability to add just enough shady characters in her novel that when the actual murderer is revealed, it is completely surprising. From Sam’s angry and hostile classmate, to the bitter adult children of Adam’s former wife, there are enough possibilities to leave a reader guessing.
“Setup” has a little bit of everything; police investigation, legal drama, teen romance and parent-child conflict. Even with all of this, the novel is well-formed, easy-to-read and easily flows from one chapter to the next. The multitude of characters complement each other, instead of confusing the plot, and I attribute that completely to Slaughter’s writing talent.
Although Slaughter has a few YA novels under her belt, “Deadly Setup” was my first experience with this author. I loved the fast pace, page-turning, emotional thrill ride of this novel, and it is obvious that Slaughter has found her writing niche in YA suspense. “Deadly Setup” is a novel that you won’t be able to put down until its over- and you’ll be left wanting more!
I'm always on the lookout for new YA mysteries so I happily agreed to read and review this story about a teen falsely accused of murder.
Sam's a bit concerned when her mother, a successful yet impractical romance novelist, meets a guy and gets very serious very fast. Sam is sure that he's just after her mom's money. When she digs deeper into his past, she doesn't like what she finds and starts joking with her friends that she needs to hire a hitman. Then things take a turn!
I feel like YA mysteries often make better reads for teens than for adults, because of the suspension of disbelief factor that's involved with having a teen character investigate a crime.
Deadly Setup definitely required some of that. But it was still a fun and enjoyable read. Sam was a great advocate for herself and, although some of the adults in her life were absolutely terrible, did find support elsewhere.
For teens looking for an engaging read with a courtroom drama aspect, Deadly Setup would make a great choice!
Mystery, tension, emotions, and an even pacing make this an intriguing coming-of-age tale.
Sam is a young woman, who does everything she should. She's an enjoyable character, who could be the girl next door, and is, in general, a nice person. It is sad to watch her relationship with her mother as Sam deals with her the best she can. When she is pulled into the murder accusation despite her disapproval of her mother's plans, the frustration and fear is palpable.
This tale flows smoothly, while building tension with steady steps. Sam comes across as a realistic individual, and it's hard not to feel for her as she finds herself accused of something she definitely didn't do. As she faces the court and isn't sure how to get out of the situation, the direness hits well and had me hoping that everything works out. While tension builds, the twists and turns are sometimes more predictable than others. There are supportive characters on her side, which add the needed cushion of hope.
Fans of thrillers with a down-to-earth atmosphere will enjoy this read. I received an ARC through Netgalley.
I was intrigued by the plot of the book and wanted to see how everything played out at the end.
The court proceedings were probably the best part since I’m a fan of legal processes and trials in books. I think more of that and some in-between investigating would’ve been better than the loads of filler in the beginning. Instead, a lot of important information was spoon-fed during witness testimonies. Not to mention that I felt like a lot of emotion and depth were lacking. I felt bad for Sam and her situation, but I wish I knew her more.
3.5 ⭐️ Thank you booksforward for letting me read an ARC of this book!! I truly loved the premise of this book. Sam, our main character, is a model student and just a good person, but she gets framed for murder, and everyone thinks it her. The story follows the case, and investigation of Sam’s situation. Also, I love Noah, he is such a supportive boyfriend, and his family was the sweetest. It all wrapped up nicely in the end, and the plot twist was not expected.
Thank you to Fire and Ice for sending me an ARC of this novel!
I remember being a teenager and watching “Law and Order” with my Dad on Wednesday nights once my homework was done (mostly…). I really enjoyed watching the detectives investigate a crime, and then watching the lawyers try the defendant, all for it to wrap up in about an hour’s time. As we’d watch my Dad, who was also a lawyer, would give me tips and tidbits on how the trial stuff worked as the story unfolded. It was solid bonding time. I kept thinking about this stuff as I read “Deadly Setup” by Lynn Slaughter, and how teenage me would have loved a book where a teenager was on trial for a crime she didn’t commit.
The thing that really stood out in a positive way in this novel is that the main focus of the conflict is in a fairly unique setting. In so many YA thrillers I’ve read (and adult thrillers too, thinking about it) the center of the action is in the investigation of a murder or crime. Usually the main character is an outside player, or they are a potential suspect and are using the limited time they have to clear their name. In “Deadly Setup”, we get into a full on courtroom drama that reminds me of some of Jodi Picoult’s earlier works. As someone who devoured a lot of Picoult’s older books specifically because of the courtroom aspects, and who, as mentioned above, really liked the original “Law and Order” specifically to watch Jack McCoy go through the courtroom motions, this really clicked with me. Slaughter takes on a lot of ins and outs and mechanics of how a murder trial would work, from witnesses to various functions of the lawyers to strategies either side would implement, and I think it’s so cool that she did this in a YA novel. It’s a really good way to show the audience that trials themselves can be completely nutty and that a lot of thriller dramatics can be found in a courtroom. I NEED MORE COURTROOM DRAMAS IN MY READING STACK!
The flip side of all of this is that outside of Sam, a lot of the characters are pretty two dimensional. I thought that Sam herself was an enjoyable character, and I really felt the stress and tension and loneliness of her situation. And as our protagonist it’s good that I liked her and was invested in her journey and fate. But almost everyone else was pretty standard for the tropes that they were filling, most of which being her mother Meryl. Meryl is a cookie cutter bad mother, as she’s narcissistic, verbally cruel, willing to believe her sleazy boyfriend of a couple months over her own daughter, and more than happy to play the victim and center herself. I have no doubt that there are mothers out there like this. Hell, I have FRIENDS who have mothers like this. But I think that the problem was that her dialogue and actions were very over the top villainous. This is also seen in the victim, Meryl’s fiancé, who is clearly a dangerous gold digging predator from the jump, and while I am a okay with him being an obvious lout, it’s laid on pretty thick here. Most of the antagonists are, really. When you throw that in with some clunky dialogue here and there and a mystery solution that is a little too hinted at a little too early, the building blocks of the story feel a little shaky. Not in a way that damages the concept overall, mind you, as I did enjoy it as I was reading. But it has awkward beats because of all these things.
But I do enjoy a courtroom drama, and “Deadly Setup” has that and how! I think that the audience this is catered to will have a really unique reading experience with this one given the crux of the drama! Jack McCoy would probably approve.
Lynn Slaughter's "Deadly Setup" is a gripping YA mystery that seamlessly blends elements of a coming-of-age story, a legal thriller, and a whodunit. The novel centers around seventeen-year-old Samantha (Sam) Hunter, the daughter of a New England heiress, who is thrust into a whirlwind of danger and deception following her father’s death. Sam’s father’s dying wish was for her to take care of her impulsive, romance-writing mother. This task proves challenging when her mother announces her engagement to Adam Holloway, a man with a dubious past and suspicious intentions.
Samantha, the appealing protagonist, has the usual challenges of any high school kid, but from the start, the reader senses this teenager is in the grip of forces beyond her control. Those challenges include a mother preoccupied with her own career; a future stepfather whose background suggests he’s after the family fortune; and the stage manager of the school play, whose behind-the-scenes machinations threaten her only safe space.
Sam’s world spirals out of control when Adam is found murdered, and she becomes the prime suspect. Faced with mounting circumstantial evidence, Sam is forced to fight for her innocence with the help of her boyfriend’s father, an ex-homicide cop. The novel’s fast-paced plot and well-defined characters keep readers hooked from the first page to the last.
Slaughter excels in creating a richly layered narrative that transition smoothly across genres. Sam’s character is particularly well-developed; she is smart, determined, and willing to do whatever it takes to protect her family. Her journey from a typical teenager to a young woman facing extraordinary circumstances is compelling and relatable. The precise details, the spot-on dialogue, and the complex mother-daughter relationship are all rendered with a sure eye and a keen sense of time and place. The “deadly setup” of the title entangles Samantha in a tight web of deceit and deception that culminates in a series of courtroom scenes that are among the best I’ve read lately. Highly recommend.
"Deadly Setup" is not just a tale of suspense; it’s a story about finding strength in the face of adversity. While the secondary characters could be more developed, they still play crucial roles in advancing the plot. The book’s pacing is well-handled, with enough twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats.
Overall, "Deadly Setup" is a thoroughly enjoyable read, perfect for teens and adults alike who appreciate a well-crafted mystery with strong character development. Lynn Slaughter has delivered a compelling novel that leaves readers eagerly anticipating her next work. Highly recommended for fans of YA mysteries and thrillers.
Ever been convicted of a crime where every finger was pointed at you despite being innocent? Well, that's precisely what Lynn Slaughter created in this thrilling piece of art. It was captivating, suspenseful, and inspiring.
In Deadly Setup, Lynn Slaughter created a make-believe centered on the life of a teenage girl; Samantha Hunter, a gifted pianist living under the shadows of a rich and impulsive mother. Losing her favorite parent a few years back, Sam is stuck with her ambitious mother who had little or no time for anyone other than herself. Things get more tense up after Sam's mother, Meryl falls hopelessly in love with Adam Holloway, a man who was several years younger and reeks of a gold digger. How far is Sam going to go to rid her mother of this wolf in sheep's clothing? How much longer before Adam ends her mother and makes away with her wealth like he did his previous wife?
As the name implies, Lynn Slaughter bases this story on second-degree murder and a setup. The intriguing thing is that you are left with no clue as to what happens next as the scene unfolds. Slaughter designed this masterpiece to not only hook but also sustain the interest of the reader till the very last line. Such tremendous suspense that you feel your heartbeat triple as a rush of adrenaline runs down your spine. There is a crime but there is no possible suspect list racing down your head. Matter of fact, you are puzzled about who the antagonist and protagonists even are. A perfect crime story.
The court cases and scenes were yet another thrilling part of this story. The author no doubt made a ton of research to perfect the law cases and proceedings.
I did not fail to notice the moral lesson this author was bringing to life. While love is a wonderful feeling, it is imperative to use one's head even after falling heads over hills. Adam Holloway was a greedy gambler and con artist but Meryl was too blinded by her love for him to turn her brains on. All advice from her daughter and financial manager fell on deaf eyes until…well, I'm not about to ruin the story for you.
Lynn Slaughter also spiced this up with a bit of teenage romance between Sam and Noah Lambert, a kid who taught her what real love and support were. Noah and his family stood by Sam all through the stormy days until the coast was finally clear. It was truly exemplary.
On a final note, I applaud this author on a work well done. It had the perfect dose of simply everything. Hence, I'm rating this a 5/5. Kudos!
Sam McFarland, a high school junior, life turns upside down due to an accusation of murdering her mother's fiancé, Adam Holloway. Sam’s mother, the famous romance novelist Caroline McFarland, has always had a complicated relationship with her daughter. This tension grows when Caroline becomes engaged to Adam, a man Sam instinctively distrusts.
When Adam is found dead, somehow, Sam becomes the prime suspect with an overwhelming show of evidence. Throughout the ordeal, Sam grapples with feelings of betrayal, confusion, and fear, but Eli and Brittany stand by her side.
The book uncovers the complexities of Sam’s relationship with her mother. When the secrets of Adam's shady dealings come to light, it seems many people might have had a motive to kill him, and Sam may just be innocent after all.
But would Sam’s persistence pay off? Would she discover the real murderer and clear her name? Would there ever be understanding between Sam and her mother? Would they heal some of the rifts that had divided them? Find out by purchasing a copy of this book!
Notable themes in this book are trust and betrayal, family dynamics, justice, and resilience. The novel combines elements of legal drama, family conflict, and personal growth, making it an engaging and thought-provoking read. The book’s plot runs in a way that keeps readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The pacing is excellent, with the tension escalating quickly after Adam's murder. The legal proceedings and investigation are detailed and realistic, adding a layer of authenticity to the narrative. I like that the suspense was maintained even while unveiling clues, keeping us engaged.
Lynn Slaughter's writing is crisp and engaging, with a keen eye for detail. Her ability to create vivid scenes and realistic dialogue enhances the reader's immersion in the story. The alternating moments of tension and meditation are well-balanced, providing both thrills and emotional depth. Lynn’s portrayal of the legal system and investigation process is thorough and well-researched, adding credibility to the narrative.
While the mystery is engaging, certain plot twists are predictable. However, it does not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story. This book is a commendable addition to the young adult genre, and fans of mystery and legal thrillers will find much to enjoy in this novel. I rate this 5 out of 5 stars.
There's usually a lot of synonyms for the words, intrigue and riveting, and yet in all my years, I never knew both words could be summed up in a simple and straightforward phrase: "Deadly Setup".
Lynn Slaughter's Deadly Setup is no ordinary story. This is a tale that takes you on a rollercoaster journey of different emotions and sensations, culminating in a plethora of reactions. It is the story of the sweetest and strongest feelings of love, devotion, and commitment, breaking down to acrimony, rage, and betrayal of even the sacred bonds of motherhood.
Samantha Hunter's world plummets into chaos, when her young life is inches away from coming to a premature end. Her enemy; someone who she trusted and loved the most, her allies; those she even barely knew. What becomes of Sam in the face of overwhelming obstacles and what hope does she have of being vindicated? Only Deadly Setup holds the answer.
Lynn Slaughter's skill and flair with words is impressive indeed, as she brings it to full bare in this ace of a story. However, even more breathtaking is her gifted mind. The storyline, the plot, her impeccable character development and climax of Deadly Setup are testament to her status as a natural, who has even further honed her gift. It is undoubtedly a privilege to share in this gift of her mind, through her books.
Beyond being a masterpiece novel, Lynn's book is a compendium of eye opening life lessons, which are necessary for all to learn from. "Love conquers all", a point greatly proven by this book. "Family is more than just blood ties", yet another message that makes this novel a must read for everyone. Action, suspense, drama, crime, love and even a sprinkling of comedy. This novel surely has you covered, whatever your tastes may be.
In the first five brief paragraphs author Lynn Slaughter sets up ‘Deadly Setup’ just beautifully and had this reader already hooked. Teenagers always get in trouble, right? Not Samantha Hunter, Sam to her few close friends. This protagonist is a bubbly, smart seventeen-year-old that just does not fit that description. Sam has just about everything a teenager would want. Well, almost. Before the death of her dad because of cancer, Sam promised him to take care of her mother. After his death, things were rocky at home with her mother, but Sam did well in school, had a few close friends and loved Hilda’s home cooking. All was going well until Mr Holloway walked into the picture. Convinced that Holloway was up to no good and just trying to get her mother’s trust fund, she set out to convince her of this, but her mother would not believe her. She confronts Holloway and, in fear of her life, grabs her father’s gun from a desk and fires a warning shot, leaves the house leaving Holloway alone, alive, and throws away the gun into some bushes. Later, the police confront her, take her into custody, and inform her of the killing of Holloway. As the dust settles, Sam finds herself thrust into a harrowing ordeal, grappling with mounting evidence and the haunting question: who truly ended Holloway's life? The title of the book tells it all as Samantha fights a web of deceit and deceptiveness, ending in a courtroom scene with a pleasant surprise for this reader but leaving the question unanswered: who killed Holloway? Prepare yourself for a pulse-pounding pace and immersive storytelling, waiting for the climax of the story. It is a doozy!

Lowry Meets Grisham Meets Connelly I loved this book. The characters are well-defined, and the plot moves fast and smoothly until the last page. Told from the point of view of seventeen-year-old Samantha (Sam) Hunters—the daughter of a New England heiress--it’s a richly layered, cross-genre novel that flows seamlessly from YA to legal thriller to Whodunit. When Sam’s dad died of cancer five years ago, he asked Sam to take care of her mother—so when her mother starts dating and intends to marry a charming younger man named Adam Holloway, that rings alarm bells in her head. Sam makes inquiries and discovers the man is a sleaze with a gambling addiction and a shady past: he was married before under another name, his wealthy wife died in a highly suspicious boat accident, and he inherited millions of dollars he lost gambling. Sam tells her mom, but she’s adamant: Adam is the love of her life, and she will marry him. As Sam digs deeper into the man’s past and starts running around telling not only her mother but her friends and everybody who will listen about the man in an all-out effort to stop the marriage, Adam is murdered, and Sam becomes the prime suspect, I won’t tell you the surprising end—although the author peppered the novel with enough hints pointing to the actual killer. This novel is for you if you like romantic coming-of-age teenage stories with unusual twists. I highly recommend it.
Lynn Slaughter delivers another captivating murder mystery in "Deadly Setup," which follows the lives of Samantha and her widowed mother. Samantha's mother, a romantic at heart, believes she's found her happy ending with Mr. Holloway, whom she plans to marry. However, Samantha suspects Mr. Holloway is a con man after her mother's money. Despite Samantha's efforts to convince her mother otherwise, she remains infatuated with Holloway.
The plot thickens when Mr. Holloway is discovered dead in their home, with Samantha being the last person to see him alive. Samantha protests her innocence, but suspicion falls upon her. As she grapples with the accusations and the betrayal of those around her, Samantha finds herself isolated and ostracized.
From the moment I picked up "Deadly Setup," I was engrossed. Lynn Slaughter expertly crafts a compelling narrative that kept me guessing until the very end. I empathized deeply with Samantha, who faced adversity from all sides. Her struggle evoked genuine emotion, making this a truly gripping read.
I give "Deadly Setup" a solid 5 out of 5 stars. The unexpected ending was a testament to Slaughter's skillful storytelling and mastery of plot twists. The identity of the killer took me by surprise, further enhancing the novel's intrigue. Overall, "Deadly Setup" is a must-read for fans of suspenseful thrillers. Lynn Slaughter's exquisite writing and gripping storyline ensure an unforgettable reading experience. Don't hesitate to grab your copy!
3.5 rounded••• When Sam learns about her mother’s engagement, she questions the legitimacy of it. Her mom is an heiress and usually the men want the money. The man claiming to love her mom, has a troubled past. His last heiress wife died in a boating accident. Sam does everything in her power to dissuade her mom from marrying him, but believes to have found her “happily ever after,” until he winds up dead. Sam is the #1 suspect. Will Sam be able to convince a jury that she’s innocent and bring the killer to justice? ••• This YA thriller was a different read for me. Sam’s character was very relatable as a seventeen year old in high school along with her boyfriend, Noah. I really enjoyed the aspect of bringing Noah’s family, especially Joey, in to the story to show how disjointed Sam’s family really was. I enjoyed the back and forth of the court case. I feel we don’t always get to see inside a court room for many thrillers. The ending was just meh. I feel we had a lot of build up and then it was just over. I didn’t think the book was overall scary or had to many thrilling points. It was pretty laid back, which I would have loved some more action. This would be a book I would recommend for a younger adult just getting into mystery and thrillers. ••• Thank you to @netgalley @booksforwardpr Lynn Slaughter and Simone Jung for sending me an eARC of the Deadly Setup
Deadly Setup is a meticulously crafted mystery that builds to a thrilling conclusion. Like the best YA novels, its premise and writing far exceed the theoretical limits of that genre. The precise details, the spot-on dialogue, and the complex mother-daughter relationship are all rendered with a sure eye and a keen sense of time and place. The “deadly setup” of the title entangles Samantha in a tight web of deceit and deception that culminates in a series of courtroom scenes that are among the best I’ve ever read. Highly recommend.
"Lynn Slaughter's 'Deadly Setup' weaves together mystery, tension, and emotional depth in a captivating coming-of-age tale. The protagonist, Samantha Hunter, finds herself embroiled in a murder accusation linked to her mother's turbulent romantic entanglements, despite her efforts to steer clear of her mother's risky decisions. As the story unfolds, Sam's plight unfolds with palpable emotional strain, drawing readers into her journey through court battles and uncertain outcomes. While some plot twists are foreseeable, supportive characters offer hope amidst the darkness, complementing the author's meticulous depiction of legal proceedings. Beyond its thrilling narrative, 'Deadly Setup' imparts poignant lessons on love, family dynamics, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Overall, Lynn Slaughter delivers a compelling blend of suspense and heartfelt storytelling that will resonate with thriller enthusiasts."
This is an unconventional coming of age story. When Sam’s father died, she promised to take care of her mother, which is proving to be a hard task as she’s just announced she’s marrying a man that Sam doesn’t approve of. The reader is tasked with deciding if it is just a normal mother - teenage daughter rift or if there is something more. And when this man is murdered and Sam is the lead suspect, so many potential suspects pop up.
Part murder mystery, along with some court proceedings, part coming of age and part romance as Sam finds someone squarely in her corner. While I ultimately guessed correctly, I was always finding new suspects and changing my mind. I really liked this mesh of genres and read it rather quickly
This is a YA book whose main character, Samantha, is accused of a crime she did not commit. A responsible young woman, she is deep into her music that incidentally was the same music her deceased father loved. The plot revolves around her narcissistic, romance-writer mother. The book has abundant emotional turmoil with a boatload of teenage angst. Noah, the lead in the high school play, West Side Story, is worshipped by Sam from afar. Sam’s more of a loaner, less of a joiner, and very protective of her emotionally volatile mother. Despite the nonstop drama or perhaps due to the nonstop drama, I found the book compelling. I recommend the book and enjoyed it.
An engaging YA mystery and courtroom procedural, with a brave and likable protagonist. Sam has just the right blend of earnestness, wit, and snark to make her a relatable teenage protagonist. The story strikes a good balance between letting her help herself without making the adults around her seem incompetent. There were enough red herrings that I could see several plausible suspects going into the final act. The ending was a bit rushed, but still satisfying. Probably better suited to older YA audiences due to some strong language and potentially upsetting themes. (Disclosure: I received a free copy of the book for review purposes.)
This book was such a winner! Sam is a high school student who gets set up and is on trial for her mother’s fiancé’s murder. Throughout the whole trial process we see Sam have such a mature outlook on the whole situation. In the same respect, there is a YA feel about the book which I loved. Sam was such a lovable character. I also really liked all of the supporting characters (except two that I absolutely hated) and the psychological thriller twist at the end. Though I was able to predict it, it was still very satisfying! Deadly Setup has everything you would want in a law procedural, true crime-esque, psychological thriller and YA book. This is a great read!
Samantha Hunter is a junior in high school - she accompanies the school musicals on the piano, loves oldies music, and is on the advanced track. Just a normal girl, right? Or did she murder her mothers fiancé?
Deadly Setup follows Sam as she navigates through finding a voice for herself in the midst of people convinced she is guilty. It’s not a bad plot, but definitely melodramatic and exaggerated a bit. However, it moves fast and keeps you turning pages. Overall , not bad for my first book by this author!

Fantastic book! Lynn Slaughter is a master at the romantic, young adult mystery. Her spell-binding story follows Samantha as she negotiates the complexity of teen friendships, tries to find out who killed her mother’s fiancé without getting in the way of the adults who are trying to help her, and grapples to understand why her own mother refuses to believe she is innocent. This was a good page-turner. I didn't want to put it down! The story has many twists and turns and I didn’t know who was guilty until the very end –-my definition of a good mystery. Samantha, the main character is likable and relatable. The other characters are interesting, too, and believable. I was engaged from beginning to end. It might be fun to read a sequel featuring Samantha as she heads into college. I would be interested to see what happens next in her life.
Deadly Setup by Lynn Slaughter was a good book. What was scary to read was that the main character, Sam, had to stand trial. What was even more disturbing was the real culprit. It was sad to read about Sam's relationship with her mother and enduring her mother's moods. Deadly Setup had a good storyline.
A very well written young adult mystery novel that keeps you hoping for a victory for the well developed young female suspect. There are people you like and people to hate with a bunch of plot twists. A very good read.
This book was so much better than I expected..when Samantha’s soon to be step father turns up dead all fingers are pointed at her. The twists and turns through the trial makes you wonder if you will ever find out who actually did it. Excellent ending!
I LOVED this book. I wasn’t too sure about it at first but as soon as I got into the plot I knew I would love it. And I do. There is a HUGE plot twist in the end that I was not expecting but it made a lot of sense.
Summary Sam's mom is a New England heiress, a romance novelist, and a hopeless romantic. It's not easy to cope with the fact that she can't seem to live without a man in her life. Before her father died, his dying wish was for Sam to take care of her mom for him. When her mom announces her engagement to a man whose last heiress wife died under suspicious circumstances, Sam is determined to protect her. To her surprise, her mom's fiancé ends up dead and all evidence is pointed at her. On trial for murder, she must prove her innocence and uncover who the real killer is. But what if the real killer is someone she must protect?
Review Deadly Setup is a YA mystery thriller by Lynn Slaughter. I enjoyed reading this book! I love court drama and whodunnit stories, so it wasn't hard to get hooked. Sam isn’t hard to love either. She’s a good daughter, friend, student, and girlfriend. Her most remarkable trait, which is honesty, was critical to her case. Overall, I’m giving it 5 out of 5 stars. The plot was absorbing, the dialogues were entertaining, and the characters were intriguing. I recommend this book to readers who love mystery thriller. It’s a realistic representation of an heiress mom and daughter relationship, friendships, and young love.
