Father Tanner treats the sick and injured on a dusty backwater planet. Desperate for supplies, he takes a job to treat a visiting alien official, teaming up with Damien Rogers, an out-of-work smuggler, to get him there. The problem? They’re on the wrong side of enemy lines in the middle of a cold war.
Forced to hide their identities, Father Tanner and his team are stumped by the bizarre patient, whose condition steadily worsens. To make matters worse, the alien crew catches onto the ruse, and the missionary is forced to turn to kidnapping. Can they find the diagnosis before their only bargaining chip dies on the operating table?
I'd describe Secret Operations as a medical espionage thriller with just a bit of Connery-era James Bond thrown in. Once I got started, I could barely put it down and finished in just a few days. Kellogg does a great job of showing us the fringes of a universe with a rich array of intelligent species in all kinds of wild bodily configurations. I'm looking forward to more stories in this universe!
Father Tanner treats the sick and injured on a dusty backwater planet. The scene opens with an operation going on for a deep bloody wound. The patient is moaning… uh, more anaesthetic needed? Nope… all Father Tanner has for him is a stick between his teeth to bite down on.
With few supplies, Father Tanner accepts a job to treat an alien official. Damien Rogers, a smuggler, gets him to the patient. They are in a very dangerous area and on enemy lines. And once he sees the patient, he is not sure why the alien’s condition keeps worsening. Will he be able to find what is causing this issue? Will they be discovered and taken captive? Will he be able to save the patient?
This is edge-of-the-seat description. If you make it past the opening pages, you’re tough enough to proceed on to the rest of the story. This may not be for everyone, but it is well-written and the characters are memorable.
