A good adaptation. Lost Stars is still my favourite book from the Disney Star Wars era, and as good at this adaptation is it is not quite as good at the original book, or even the part of the book. I know space was limited, but I think too much was left out for me.
This book starts from the destruction of Alderaan, but it is the destruction of the Death Star that pushes both Thane and Ciena in completely different directions. What I did like is that it captures the devastation of war. Like every Star Wars fan i cheered as Luke made the shot that destroyed the evil Death Star, but think about it, millions of soldiers were killed with that shot. Then on the other side it is the rebellion's non military activities are shown helping people with medical supplies from their limited supply, where as the Empire is willing to let people die to show them they are useles and expendable. Though Thane and Ciena are of different paths, they are always drawn to each other.
This is a good summary of this portion of the book, but the biased fan in me wants every line of the book covered. Good artwork, especially of the more emotional parts. All in all, good, and even though I know what happens, I can't wait for vol 3.

Fazit: "Verlorene Welten" bleibt sich im zweiten Teil selbst treu und überzeugt mit tiefgründigem Charakteraufbau und malerischen Umgebungen. Gesamt: 5/5
Inhalt: Im zweiten Band von "Verlorene Welten" erfährt der Leser, was nach der Vernichtung Alderaans mit Thane und Ciena geschieht. Ersterer wendet sich endgültig vom Imperium ab und taucht unter. Während er sich bald mit einer bunten Crew umgibt, hört er den Lockruf der Rebellion. Ciena hingegen bleibt dem Herrschaftsapparat treu und steigt in den Rängen der Flotte. Doch ihren Freund, der so viel mehr ist für sie, kann sie nicht vergessen...
Bewertung: Der zweite Teil der Mangareihe von Komiyama hat mich ebenso beeindruckt zurückgelassen wie der erste Band. Die Story nimmt nun richtig Fahrt auf und die Gegensätze zwischen den Protagonisten brechen hervor. Thane ist der psychischen Belastung seiner Erlebnisse nicht gewachsen. Auch wenn er selbst nichts Unrechtes getan hat, kann er die Augen vor den Verbrechen des Imperiums nicht verschließen. Dieser Wandel verläuft nicht gradlinig. Der junge Pilot benötigt Zeit zur Verarbeitung, zum Übergang in den passiven Widerstand und letztlich für den Weg zum Kämpfer. Anhand von Ciena hingegen erlebt der Leser eine andere mögliche Reaktion auf etwas derart Schreckliches wie die Zerstörung Alderaans: Verdrängung. In der nächsten Stufe folgt darauf sogar verstärkte Feindschaft gegenüber den Rebellen, aufgrund des Verlustes ihrer Freundin bei der Vernichtung des ersten Todessterns. Diese deutlichen Gegensätze führen aber nicht zu einem harten Bruch der Protagonisten. Wie zwei Magnete haben sie eine abstoßende und eine anziehende Seite. Trotz unterschiedlicher Ansichten sorgen sie sich und wollen schlussendlich das Beste für den jeweils anderen. Diese Charakterentwicklungen wirken detailliert und durchdacht und somit schließlich realistisch. Neben dem Figurenaufbau bleibt die Grafik der weitere Anker des Werkes. Komiyama fängt die Galaxis und ihre Bewohner wunderschön ein und verleiht ihnen Leben in der Monochromie. Mit Hilfe kleinster Details stellt die Autorin die emotionale Welt der Figuren dar und schafft es, den Leser immer wieder neu zu überraschen.
Fazit: "Verlorene Welten" bleibt sich im zweiten Teil selbst treu und überzeugt mit tiefgründigem Charakteraufbau und malerischen Umgebungen. Gesamt: 5/5

I read the first one and immediately went looking for the second one at my school's library! Not only do you get the aspect of fighting against the majorly powers but you also get hints of romance!! I mean come on now...why would you not want to read this???

This continues to be a great adaptation

This continues to be "just fine." It is successful in that it tells a compelling story, though it is definitely simplified from what it could be if written for adults. It is Star Wars, though, and while it tries to shoehorn itself into the movie-established world (why in the world does everyone have "a bad feeling"?), the story carries itself just fine.

La distruzione di Alderaan rappresenta un punto di svolta per i nostri protagonisti, sia per quanto riguarda il loro rapporto con l'Impero che i loro sentimenti.
Ovunque vada, Thane si trova circondato dai segni della crudeltà con cui le forze imperiali impongono il loro potere: nemmeno l'amore per Ciena è sufficiente per convincerlo a restare, e così il ragazzo decide improvvisamente di disertare.
Per Ciena la situazione è un po' diversa, perché allo shock per la distruzione di Alderaan fanno da contraltare la rabbia e il dolore per gli amici uccisi durante l'attacco dei ribelli alla Morte Nera (quello che si vede alla fine di episodio IV per intenderci). Consapevole delle falle e dei problemi dall'Impero (visto che li proverà anche sulla sua pelle), la ragazza decide di rimanere al suo posto con l'obiettivo di migliorare le cose e di vendicarsi anche dei ribelli.
E sono proprio i ribelli il motivo del contendere tra i due giovani: infatti, Ciena decide di raccontare una bugia per proteggere l'uomo di cui è innamorata, però, in cambio, chiede a Thane di non unirsi agli odiati ribelli. Per un po' sarà così, ma poi il ragazzo deciderà di supportare l'alleanza ribelle, perché spera anche lui di poter cambiare le cose. È interessante come, dal suo punto di vista, anche i ribelli siano degli assassini: è facile dimenticarsi che molte persone hanno preso la vita da entrambi le parti, che tutti hanno le mani macchiati di sangue.
A dispetto di tutto, l'amore che unisce i due non è mai venuto meno, però la situazione è davvero complicata. Lo scontro finale si avvicina e io non vedo l'ora di sapere cosa me sarà di Thane e Ciena.

Volume 2 of Lost Stars picks up where the first left off, and we get to see how both Thane and Ciena react to the Empire's destruction of Alderaan and the Rebellion's subsequent retaliation against the Death Star. It then covers the time period through The Empire Strikes Back and a little bit after that film.
If you've already read the novel version of Lost Stars, you won't find much new here. It has been a while since I read the original, but all of the major plot points seem to be here intact. Like with the first volume, the pacing seems to be a bit faster in the manga, and I read through this installment a lot more quickly than I was expecting.
I don't really have the expertise to know how this stacks up to other manga, but I have been enjoying the Japanese tropes applied to the Star Wars universe - it's a really interesting combination that results in some very expressive characters with their inner monologues ending up illustrated on the page. I really liked the style and thought it worked well with the star-crossed-lovers theme of the story.
If you like Star Wars and manga, then this is probably a must-read for you. It's a lot of fun and very well done. If you're just a Star Wars fan or just a manga fan, I think there's definitely something in it for you too.

In this volume we see the continuing stories of Thane and Ciena. As Thane becomes disillusioned with the Empire's actions, Ciena is rising through the Imperial ranks and being handed important missions like rescuing a certain Sith Lord who has been adrift in space since the destruction of the Death Star.
What I love most about this series is getting to see Ciena rendered on the pages. The artist does a tremendous job of rendering Ciena. It fills my heart so much to see her come alive from the pages of Claudia Gray's novel. My one complaint is that the adaptation doesn't highlight how much important giving of ones word is in Ciena's culture.
In the manga she comes across as misguided and possibly unwilling to see the truth about the Empire, but it is very much tied to her cultural beliefs, and as Thane's culture is different he is able to make more changes. Still a wonderful adaption and I look forward to the third volume in the series.

As with the previous volume, Yusaku Komiyama's art shines through the volume, the ships, the setings, the characters, everything!
The volume starts with the aftermath of Alderaan and the Death Star destruction and the impact on the Empire and on our main characters, Ciena Ree and Thane Kyrell. She remains on the Empire while he deserts and later joins the Rebel Alliance. They work their way back to the events of the Empire Strikes Back and further, showcasing the harmful effects of the Imperial rule on the galaxy, especially on Jelucan and it's society.
Reunited and separated a number of times, the characters face themselves just before the events of Return of the Jedi, on a pivotal confrontation.
Extremely recommended!

Hating the Rebels doesn't mean supporting the Empire and bruh, this 2nd episode of Lost Stars tackles this dilemma head on
Learning more and more that this story is perfectly suited for Manga. If done in traditional western comics or even a screen adaptation, I can see how some of the teeny bop moments would come off as cringe.
Many people criticize Disney, but this story is incredible, and I think thats because the creators just made this really simple and also they weren't working with mainstream characters
Not complex, enjoyable and might even give you the water stuff that comes from your eyes at some point
I'm getting anxiety about finishing this series, because I don't want it to end

My review is essentially the same for the first volume, I think this is a strong adaption. I’m familiar with the original novel so I can fill in the gaps myself, but it’s really fun seeing the visuals! There are some really great panels in this one, and I love the designs they went with. I really love this story so it’s fun revisiting in this style!

J’ai la trilogie depuis longtemps, mais je n’ai pourtant lu que le premier tome, je vais donc me rattraper un peu en lisant la suite sous peu. L’univers Star Wars a toujours été un univers fascinant à mes yeux et riche, même si je n’arrive pas toujours à suivre la temporalité de celui-ci. Je me fixe souvent comme repaire Dark Vador d’ailleurs… Beaucoup de personnes aiment cet univers, sans même savoir qu’il représente une critique de notre société et où… L’Empire, représente concrètement le fascisme (Allemagne nazi), les Jedi étaient plus une représentation de la démocratie ou du libre arbitre, tandis que les rebelles sont tout simplement les résistants.
Le manga se concentre bien plus sur la relation entre les différents personnages et son évolution qu’autre chose. Raison pour laquelle on saute pas mal dans le temps, passant rapidement de la destruction d’une planète à celui de l’étoile de la mort. C’est un peu dommage parce qu’en dehors des deux protagonistes, il n’y a pas vraiment d’attachement pour les autres. J’imagine que le choix a été fait pour ne pas s’éparpiller non plus. Mais le fait que les autres personnages soient un peu oubliés, me donne l’impression que leur sort ne sera pas très joyeux et qu’ils ne serviront qu’à envenimer encore plus la situation entre les deux personnages principaux. Ce que je ne comprends pas trop, c’est qu’à la fin du tome, Ciena termine dans un chasseur Tie (si c’est bien comme ça qu’on dit), alors qu’elle n’est pas supposée être pilote. Je me demande bien pourquoi elle a un tel changement de poste. Aux dernières nouvelles, elle avait rejoint le vaisseau de Vador, mais pas pour devenir pilote… Quand je vous dis qu’il y a beaucoup de sauts dans le temps, je commence même à être perdue sur certains événements qui se déroulent. Ce qui arrive à ses deux personnages est vraiment tristes, parce qu’ils sont si mignons ensembles. Se laisser déchirer par la guerre, c’est vraiment horrible, mais cela pourrait très bien arriver réellement. Je ne vois pas vraiment de fin heureuse à cette histoire, reste à savoir si les deux périrons ou s’il n’y en aura qu’un… L’autre sera alors hanté jusqu’à sa propre fin par le fantôme de son être aimé.
Je ne sais pas ce qui est le pire dans ce tome, entre voir le malheur que répand l’Empire partout où il pose les pieds. Et ceux qui le laisse faire, alors même que leur propre planète, leurs proches, sont détruits. Il faut quand même être sacrément aveugle ou dans le déni pour ne pas réagir à pareille situation. Pire encore, participer à maintenir celle-ci en restant dans une telle armée, alors que tu es au courant. Te persuader que tu fais le bien alors que tout fini par être détruit par le camp que tu as rejoints, il faut une sacrée dose de manipulation mentale ou de bêtise. Autant Ciena, je peux encore comprendre car sa famille est un peu prise en otage (sa mère est condamnée à tort, elle ne peut rien faire, mais ne réagit pas drastiquement en ayant peur pour son père). Mais pour Nash, sa planète a été détruire sous ses yeux, il n’a donc plus de proches dessus, comment peut-il décemment rester au service de l’Empire ?! Ou alors on aura une révélation d’ici la fin comme quoi c’est un rebelle, je l’espère grandement en tout cas, même si je ne me trouve pas très utile, je ne pourrais pas rester sans rien faire à sa place. Le sort de Jude est tragique, mais prévisible, il fallait bien une opposition entre les deux personnages, ainsi qu’un lien avec l’étoile de la mort. Il ne faut pas oublier que des gens travaillés dessus et encore une fois, Jude semblait fière, mais je ne l’aurais jamais été à sa place. Un outil servant à détruire une planète… non merci.

Continuing the manga of the novel Lost Stars. Read in one sitting... still is amazing.
Highlights:
- The Death Star is destroyed and Thane is part of the force sent to Dantooine, which is why he survives. Ciena investigates reports and finds that her friend reported the thermal exhaust port weakness and the Empire chose to ignore her.
- Thane and Ciena meet up and see that each other is alive. Ciena kisses him and their feelings are shared between each other.
- Thane deserts the Empire and goes on the run. When Ciena finds out, she goes to Jellican to look for him. Finding him, they make love, and she lies to the Empire, claiming he committed suicide. Before leaving, she makes Thane promise not to join the Rebellion.
- Thane joins a crew of smugglers. Delivering supplies to a planet, he meets Wedge Antillies. Wedge talks with him and convinces him that doing nothing to help stop the Empire is wrong. Thane joins the Rebellion.
- Back to the beginning of the story, Ciena analyzes the footage of the Battle of Hoth and recognizes Thane's flying style. She swears to kill him the next time she sees him.
- Ciena goes home to Jellican for her mother's trial. Thane shows up and they almost kill each other. Thane tries to get her to come with him, even if she doesn't join the Rebellion. She refuses.
- Admiral Ackbar sends Corona Squadron (Thane is on it) to the Hudalla System to investigate why the Empire is massing there. A squad of TIEs finds them and Ciena is one of the pilots....
Really looking forward to Volume 3. I don't really remember what happens so it will be nice to be reminded.

Highlights:
- The Death Star is destroyed and Thane is part of the force sent to Dantooine, which is why he survives. Ciena investigates reports and finds that her friend reported the thermal exhaust port weakness and the Empire chose to ignore her.
- Thane and Ciena meet up and see that each other is alive. Ciena kisses him and their feelings are shared between each other.
- Thane deserts the Empire and goes on the run. When Ciena finds out, she goes to Jellican to look for him. Finding him, they make love, and she lies to the Empire, claiming he committed suicide. Before leaving, she makes Thane promise not to join the Rebellion.
- Thane joins a crew of smugglers. Delivering supplies to a planet, he meets Wedge Antillies. Wedge talks with him and convinces him that doing nothing to help stop the Empire is wrong. Thane joins the Rebellion.
- Back to the beginning of the story, Ciena analyzes the footage of the Battle of Hoth and recognizes Thane's flying style. She swears to kill him the next time she sees him.
- Ciena goes home to Jellican for her mother's trial. Thane shows up and they almost kill each other. Thane tries to get her to come with him, even if she doesn't join the Rebellion. She refuses.
