As a practicing stroke neurologist, Dr. Ramirez knows all too well that it is better to prevent disease than it is to treat it. Heart disease, strokes, cancers—which together take over a million American lives every year, and many more around the world, share many common risks. By targeting these risk factors, we can drastically lower the chances of developing the diseases that affect us, and greatly improve our long-term health.
Dr. Ramirez has simplified his recommendations to a short list of the most impactful changes you can make to help you achieve greater life quality and longevity… all with the evidence to back it up. Let's not take our health for granted! Using the principals in Simplify Your Heath, you can live longer, age with dignity, and enjoy more of the beautiful things life has to offer.
The perfect book to help somebody take control of their health. Understanding how easy steps can prevent huge pitfalls in your health is empowering. While reading this book I was motivated to start doing simple things like standing more while working, increasing my exercise, eating more veggies. I have noticed small benefits already, but I know the biggest payoff will be my health later in life.
Simplify Your Health is a straightforward guide to improving the quality of one’s life by educating the reader about the decisions made daily that can impact their health. Lucas Ramirez, MD, uses history, facts, examples, and tips to help the reader better understand their health and how to apply his guidance into their life. The book does not contribute to diet culture. Instead, it consists of a good mix of what to avoid and why, while also outlining the benefits of small changes that have a positive effect on the longevity of one’s life. While a lot of the work is grounded in research-backed facts, he also provides his opinion based on his experiences as a Vascular Neurologist in California. This guide is true to its name since it depicts a simple approach to disease prevention through applicable “life hacks”, as described in the book. While the advice given by Dr. Ramirez is not unheard of to most people, it isstructured and written in an understandable way that his readers would find relatable. His passion for stroke and disease prevention is evident in his advice and in the personal stories he includes. While he repeats that he is not making any political statements in the book, he does make his points very clear. The statistics throughout also help give the reader the impression of how serious health problems are. This guide to a healthier lifestyle can be beneficial to those who need to make changes for their health and are not sure where to start. The advice is applicable and highly useful to modern North American society.
Sublime line: “In this easy-to-read guide, Dr. Ramirez highlights modern society’s health patterns and provides the reader with applicable changes in order to improve their lives.”
Thoughts: If you like statistics, you will love this book. It is full of facts and figures—information on how to live a better, healthier life. Unfortunately, for me, there was nothing here that I haven’t seen before. There weren’t any tips on how to do things or recipes or exercises—just stats on what happens if you don’t do these things. According to the author, you have choices to make: Do not smoke (including marijuana), drink only in moderation, attain and keep a healthy weight, increase physical activity, improve your eating habits, check your blood pressure and get it to a safe level, take medications as prescribed, get recommended screenings, get vaccinated. That’s it. Do all these things and you’ll have a healthier life.
Except most of us already know these things. What we need is a way to do them, not statistics on what happens when we don’t do them.
Recommendations: If you’re looking to convince someone else to change to a healthier lifestyle and they are a statistics lover, this is the book for them. If you’re looking for how-to’s in order to live a healthy life, look elsewhere.

A short, practical guide on how to take care of your health. A lot of what is covered in this book most people are already aware of to maintain their health such as: don't smoke, exercise regularly, watch your weight & blood pressure, eat healthy meals, get adequate sleep, etc. The book has a lot of facts and figures and charts on all this, which most people are already aware of for a healthier life.
Personally, I had hoped that there would be a bit more in the way of how to regularly do all these things to help maintain one's health, in the hectic everyday lives most people live nowadays. Guidance along those lines would have been helpful to have been incorporate into this book. That would have helped this book stand out in the sea of hundreds of others along the similar topic line.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for my ARC of this book in exchange for my review.
Dr. Ramirez has simplified his recommendations to a short list of the most important changes you can make to help you achieve a greater life quality. You discover the research he has to back up what he tells the reader. Using his knowledge you can live longer, age with dignity, and enjoy your life. It amazed me how this book gave me some hints that I knew about and also reminded me of bad habits I had. I found his book to be informative, helpful and how I can make changes. I like the short list he gives to help us.

This book is a short, basic guide to taking charge of your health. The first part of the book has chapters on avoiding smoking, drinking, keeping a healthy weight, exercising and eating healthier. Nothing new, but very well written and with up to date information. The second section has chapters on keeping an eye on your blood pressure , important screening tests and how often they should be done, and vaccines ( which is up to date with information about Covid 19). Again, all chapters were well- written with just enough detail. All in all, a good, fundamental health guide .
I won this book through Goodreads Firstreads. All opinions are my own.

The basics are: don’t smoke, drink in moderation, stay at a healthy weight, be physically active, eat well, control your blood pressure and more. Ramirez explains the reasoning behind those caveats. His explanations are thorough and backed by scientific research. This well written book can put any reader on the right track to good health. Just follow his advice! 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Black Rose Writing and Lucas Ramirez, MD for this ARC.
The title pretty much says it all. By following eight simple guidelines, you will potentially lead a healthier life. No fad diets or miracle pills here, just some plain old common sense. Good sound information.
Dr. Ramirez offers brief histories of each topic broached in the book (smoking, cancer, obesity, etc.) and proceeds to offer advice regarding each topic on how to prolong your life. This is not a book for those who want to be told exactly what to do (recipes, day-by-day plan, etc.)
