Alexa Verde never fails to write a book which has one sitting on the edge of one's seat from beginning to end, and then wishing the book hadn't ended. This book verges on the unlikely, but after all isn't that why we read novels?

A spin off from the original cowboy crossing series that has it all drama, mystery, romance as well as a strong Christian basis. This story just captured me from the first pages as the characters first stepped out to meet them.

Why are these foster siblings hiding out in the small town of Cowboy Crossing in a house that has been bulletproofed as well as other safety precautions in place? There is something that all of these women are holding secret that happened in their past. They are very protective of each other.

This story centers on Jessie Ashford a former Houston police officer who resigned her job after her last case. There's a story there too! She is the protector of her siblings and has a past that is filled with hurt and rejection.
Being abandoned one too many times from a drug addicted mother to a fiance that shot her- she has a hard time trusting, especially men. Local cop and cowboy Ronan O'Neill may be just the man that can see beyond the protective wall she has put up to the woman inside.

Ronan O'Neill comes from a family of six brothers as well as still happily married parents. They run a ranch although he chose to go into law enforcement instead of ranching. There's something about Jessie that draws him and the mystery that surrounds this group of women keeps him coming back to visit them at their lodge. When Jessie asks him to help her investigate a case of possible murders- he's more than willing but he knows that she is holding parts of the story from him. Ronan is a protector but he has no trouble with his growing feelings for a former cop even though he's already lost his fiance to her dangerous firefighter profession.

When Jessie's case is solved will she go back to her old job or be willing to stay?

I loved the foreshadow of other stories to come.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

No Fake Dating for a Cowboy is the first book in the Escape to Cowboy Crossing series by Alexa Verde. When their family is threatened, former policewoman Jessie Ashford makes sure their temporary home in a small town is as secure as possible as secure as the wall around her heart. She also has a secret she will die trying to protect. However, when Ronan O’Neill, the local police officer, helps investigate the suspicious events around Jessie and her family, her defenses begin to fall. As Jessie is a woman who has a chip on her shoulder, Ronan is a cop with his heart on his sleeve. Still reeling from the loss of his fiancée, he wasn’t expecting to be drawn to Jessie. Can Jessie learn to trust Ronan and open her heart one more time? Can Ronan convince her that he is worthy of her love and trust?
From the opening page to the closing chapter, No Fake Dating for a Cowboy has all the charms of a small town with the suspense of a mystery thriller. There is a mixture of love, humor and nail biting excitement. However, there was a bit too much jumping back and forth in time. There was a lot of internal monologue. Too much information that other characters discuss without being revealed by another. Did I miss when particular information was revealed? I did like the characters. They were believable with flaws and yet band together to support one another. I loved the interactions between Jessie and her sisters and Ronan and his brothers. Ms Verde definitely captured sibling relationships and interactions. Overall, the story was good and I am still debating if I will continue the series. If you enjoy a small town romance with suspense, I recommend No Fake Dating for a Cowboy.

Ronan and Jessie’s story is part tender love story and part suspenseful mystery. Jessie and Ronan are multi-faceted, intriguing characters that evoke empathy and a wish to see them find a wonderful happily ever after. Both are officers of the law and are dedicated to helping people. They are also fiercely loyal to their families, even though Jessie’s family is not connected through blood, but rather by shared experiences and choice. Jessie and her fellow foster sisters have made a family in which everyone offers each other unconditional support and love, and everyone has a distinct role. Jessie’s role is the protector. She will sacrifice just about anything to keep the others safe, even her own life. She never expected to meet a man who would stir her heart again and inspire both faith and trust.

Though readers don’t get the full scope of the secret the foster sisters share or their full history in this book, what is provided is rather twisted and painful. Each has had a great deal of loss, pain, abandonment and abuse in their past. They have learned to only count on and trust each other. For Jessie, meeting Ronan is blessing from the God she has thought abandoned her. Ronan has had his own painful loss, but Jessie is opening his heart and mind to love and hope for the future. Jessie feels that connection, but experience has taught her not to trust and not to hope. She tells herself that her foster sisters and their safety are more important than her feelings for Ronan. As they work together to solve a mystery, both Ronan and Jessie open their hearts more and more. Will they reach toward love and each other as God intended or will they let doubt and insecurities keep them apart?

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I love it when one of my favorite authors writes in my favorite genre! The characters in this book are truly likeable and complex. I enjoyed reading about the close-knit former foster sisters that made their own family together and about the strong, loving O'Neill family. Ronan, a police officer, and Jessie, a former police officer are featured in this first book in the series. Each has serious issues from their past that make getting to their HEA difficult. My one issue with the book was that Ronan, a strong Christian, romantically pursued Jessie, a lapsed Christian, but that's nothing to do with how well the story is written; and it is written very well. Although Ronan and Jessie get their HEA, there are a few unanswered questions that I expect to be solved in the following books. I found this intriguing, not annoying. This book ends well. I look forward to reading about the other couples and more about the mysteries.
I was given a complimentary copy and am sharing my opinion of this great read.

MORE AWESOME COWBOY CROSSING STORIES!!!

More Cowboy Crossing? Yes, please! Especially since Alexa Verde has such a fabulous way of bringing her characters to life. Jessie, and her sisters, and Ronan O’Neill, and his family, (did I mention BROTHERS?!😉😉😁) are excellent examples of people walking right off of the page and into your heart. Ummm! Characters! I mean CHARACTERS… 😉we all know that they aren’t real PEOPLE. Jessie and Ronan start the new series, Escape to Cowboy Crossing, with a BANG! This book has lots of action, mystery, and romance, as well as being truly inspiring as Jessie and her foster sisters overcome a awful childhood. It’s beautiful as Ronan prays and tries to be the man of God Jessie needs him to be to show her the ultimate romance, a Creator who loves her with an everlasting love! A wonderful beginning to another not-to-be-missed series.

Unconditional love!

Jessie had been betrayed and abandoned many times in her life. The only ones she trusted now were her foster siblings and they felt the same way about her. They should be safe in the small town of Cowboy Crossing, especially with all the precautions they have taken except for the handsome, nosey cop showing up at their front door.

Ronan isn’t sure what is going on at the old lodge but the woman who answered the door is worth more of his attention.

I was rooting for Jessie and Ronan. It’s hard to build a relationship when an undercurrent of danger is always present. This is a good romance as well as a good mystery. I received an advance copy but my review is honest and voluntary.

This Midwestern mother and grandmother was immediately drawn into the suspense and intrigue in this new Escape to Cowboy Crossing series. I enjoyed the role the characters assumed: Jessie the Defender, Paisley the Encourager, and Genevieve the Nurturer. Since food was a love language, the story makes for some delicious reading. Ronan was a simple cowboy and a simple cop, who didn't like things hidden. A twist and turn plot with relatable characters (Jessie and Ronan) and a believable resolution makes No Fake Dating for a Cowboy a page turning read. Alexa Verde’s romance mystery stories makes the reader ponder life - a person's strength, reliability, realness, and admiration. Well done Alexa Verde.

Nice start to a series.

Good writing. Good editing. Good clean story. This story has an unintended romance, a little faith and a mystery to solve. It is about two families. One traditional big family full of love and all the other things that come with it. One not so traditional, but a family of biologically unrelated women who became foster sisters and as adults chose to stay sisters despite being different from each other. The bonds they built in their not so great foster home was true love for each other. Trust that had been earned. They knew they could always depend on each other, even when everyone else in life failed them.

This could be read as a stand alone, but I think I’m interested enough to continue on to the next book. Likely the whole series.

No Fake Dating for a Cowboy (Escape to Cowboy Crossing #1)
By Alexa Verde
No Fake Dating for a Cowboy is the first installment in the series Escape To Cowboy Crossing.
Alexa Verde has another winner in the start of a new series. This is Jessie and Roman’s story.
Cowboy Crossing is where people care about each other. Jessie a former policewoman and wears a chip on her shoulder. Roman is small-town cop who wears his heart on his sleeve. A small town with faith, humor, danger, suspense and mystery. Roman has already lost his heart once, but he has to protect this newcomer. Will he loose out again? I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Misfits on Parade.

Ronan O’Neill is a lovely man even though he is a cop. He is still having a sad heart for a girlfriend who had died several years before. Along several young ladies all with quirky personalities. Strangely enough he is caught off guard with the one who is most like a tomboy. She is a former police officer currently unemployed. Her name is Jessie. Jessie has had a hard life in foster care and several boyfriends who did her harm. It is a delightful reading watching the two dance around each other. Finding a true friendship and love partner for life is great to see.

Jessie is trying to protect her foster siblings that are her family. Ronan is a cowboy cop. They meet when Ronan shows up to get Scratcher, who has escaped from his home. Jessie knows she can't poke around in a case since she's no longer on a police force, and decides to get Ronan to help. The more time they spend together, the more both of them are drawn to the other. When Jessie realizes that she can trust both God and Ronan, things start working better. What a great start to a new series!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.

I love suspense and romance and this book is perfect. I love Ronan and Jessie’s story, the love they develop for each other is amazing. Jessie and her foster siblings would do anything for each other and has proven it time after time. It has been a while since a book has gotten my heart pumping the way this one has. I still haven’t figured everything out yet and after reading the epilogue I am already hooked on the next book. This is going to be one awesome series. What a great job by Alexa Verde.

No Fake Dating for a Cowboy

This is a wonderful start to the series. It is full of suspense and romance. Jessie and her foster sisters have purchased and moved into the Lodge that has been for sale near Cowboy Crossing. Ronan has been sent by his mom to get their runaway cat. Jessie helps him rescue the cat. The mystery surrounding the foster sisters intrigues him as a police officer and he finds himself attracted to Jessie. Both have things in their past to overcome. Will they be able to stay alive long enough to discover their happiness?

I had a free copy of this book, but this is my honest and voluntary opinion. Former policewoman Jessie Ashford and her foster sisters are living in a fortress like secure lodge near Cowboy Crossing. Local Cop Ronan O’Neil befriends the group and takes a special interest in Jessie. They work together to solve the mystery surrounding one of the sisters. Jessie had been hurt and then fired from her position as a cop and is now recuperating. The plot features love and protection of family. A great read!

Great start to a new series!

Jessie tries real hard to not fall for Ronan, but she looses the battle, sucked in not only by him but the warm acceptance of the entire O'Neill family. Ronan never really fought the feelings that grew, even as he feared losing her to a dangerous career.

The romance progressed realistically, and the dialogue flowed naturally. The mystery played out well. Can't wait for the next book!

How exciting! A new series from one of my favorite authors. Honestly, I was thinking, as I read, that Alexa Verde's books don't even need a plot. It is entertaining enough just reading her writing style and the clever conversations! I was touched by the experiences of the "foster sisters" and was cheering them on throughout, especially Jessie. Like I've said before, Alexa's books have a little of everything most people love. Personally, I like the mysteries that she adds.

Oh, my, so many secrets, so many hurts. Jessie, Paisley, Madeline and Genevieve have formed a tight family group based on shared pain and secrets. All are over-achievers in their own way and under lots of stress. I loved this story with its twists, turns and surprises. Ronan is only the first of the O’Neill brothers to fall in love with one of these “sisters”. Alexa Verde outdid herself with this series.

As much as I love Ms. Verde's books, I was slightly disappointed in No Fake Dating for a Cowboy. It had lots of suspense, mystery, and slow-burn romance between Jessie and Ronan. However, I found the back story hard to follow at times. By the end of the book, we're told most of the characters' back stories, and I imagine the series will focus more on each; but I felt like something was missing.

I can't wait to read Alexa Verde's book about Cormac and Paisley's romance. I enjoyed reading this book so much, loving the mysteries surrounding the story of Jessie and Ronan. I hadn't read the books before this one, so I read it as a stand-alone which worked out just fine.
The foster sisters make this book unique since they are a close knit family in their own way.
This is a nice clean romance-mystery.

Don't Ever Give Up on Love

Jessie due to her abusive past with parents boyfriends and ex husband's had truly come to believe she was unlovable. Ronon thought he was so crushed and unforgiven for angry words spoken to his fiance the night before she died, that he never let himself love again until he met Jessie. Once he realized he loved her it was a proving time to prove to Jessie he would stand by her. A very touching book definitely worth the five stars.

First off, I found there to be a lot of repetition, like someone constantly repeating themselves for the sake of a slow student. Then somewhere along the way I missed the part in the blurb about it being a religious romance with zero spice content. The characters were developed and likable, even when they acted a little on the slow side. The mystery was just okay without any real depth. It took a lot to finish the book and not just kick it to the curb. Not much in it was holding my interest.

A Different Romance.

A murderous plot, is not often a setting for a love story, but this unique novel with lots of twists and turns, has us page turning and holding our breath and guessing right til the end.
Some of the minor details are a bit repetitive but the unusual characters and storyline balance the weaknesses and keep us reading on.
A great read for the holiday or for when interruptions abound!

What a wonderful story. All the diverse characters just grabbed me from the beginning. Such very strong women who love and protect each other have grown from tragic beginnings. Ronan’s faith that continues after tragedy inspires Jessie to seek God again. This is a suspenseful read that wouldn’t let me put it down.

Lovable

I really enjoyed this book because the of how the heart works in real time. Some people have to really work at trusting and being vulnerable. That heart is a resilient muscle as it takes time to heal.I loved this book and am anxiously awaiting the next one in this series. Read it ~ you’ll love it!!

Great start for a new series!

Ms Verde has created a wonderful town in my home state, Missouri that I wish was real so I could move there. Wonderfully flawed heroines I can relate to and a family of young men with good values and caring parents on what I'm sure is a beautiful ranch.
I am looking forward to the next one!

I always enjoy reading Alexa Verde's books.

The romance between Jessie and Ronan was building even though they both were dealing with very stressful past events.

The author kept you wondering about the danger the foster girls were enduring. Wow, what a surprise about what the secret was that they were holding!

This book was very easy to read.
