Jordan Tyler read "The Prince" by Niccolo Machiavelli when he was seventeen years old, and a few notable lines stuck with him because he'd instinctively understood them: "Everyone sees what you appear to be, few experience what you really are," and "When brutality is the only option left, it is holy." That was right before he screwed up and lost everything, even his name. Then when he was twenty-one, Joe Valentine (the man Jordan Tyler became, also known as "Lazarus") pissed off the wrong person and had to spill some blood to survive. Thanks to the Red Star, the violent street gang he'd been a member of for more than seven years, he was more than comfortable with getting a little bloody when he needed to, but this time was different. When the dust settled, the Star had a new leader: Joe. Now he will come to understand another Machiavelli quote: "He whowishes to be obeyed must know how to command."
