You'll know frustration in the eyes when you read this volume. Seriously, the angst, anxiety, mixed with rage that I felt on the course of this volume couldn't compare to the previous ones. I can't keep calm! It'll definitely blow up on my face when I open the next volume! I JUST WANT TO BE HAPPY, OKAY?

Anyway, the metaphorical storytelling is really 🫰 and education. Awesome read as always!

This is interesting. I think this goes to show the lengths people will go to when they're desperate. Specifically

Each volume of this series is a delight to read. The story is consistent with good pacing, artwork is simple but very detailed and the ending always leaves me wanting more. I also love learning about all the different Japanese sweets.

I’m always ready for the next volume when it comes to this series! The twists and turns have me wanting more!!!!!
I have to add that I feel sad for judging Shiori in the past. She obviously has some trauma. She’s just a good person making some impulsive choices because of her past with her father.

Content note for the SERIES: murder, death of a parent, violence, unfair loss of job/firing, domestic violence, abuse, involuntary confinement, attempted murder

Okay, I don’t wanna spoil anything, so I’m only going to give a vague-ish review of the first couple of books in the series! First, let me assure any of you who might not be interested in NSFW material (or disappoint those of you who are lol)– this isn’t that spicy of a comic. There are a few panels in each book so far that include very brief allusions to sex but don’t show anything outright.

Y’all. This series had me in a VISE GRIP!! It’s SO GOOD. It’s incredibly well written, and the art is just so beautiful and elegant, matching the subject matter perfectly. The number of kimono and wagashi illustrated in here alone is so satisfying.

This series is the kind that gets better and better with each volume, and that’s not something I can usually say about much these days, so I was so, so happy to read this. It unfolds throughout and never lets you rest on your laurels, thinking you know for sure what’s going to happen or who will be unveiled to be involved with the main plot or any number of subplots going on at the same time. Beautiful!

I love the characters, and I love how the creator develops their relationships across so many volumes. I felt so fulfilled watching these characters’ arcs unfold the way they did. I want to say more, but I would be spoiling SO MUCH if I did! Just, trust me, you need to go give this series a read, it’s fantastic. It’s no wonder they got a tv adaptation!

I disagree a bit with the jacket copy on this series, describing it as spine chilling. Maybe I’m desensitized by all the horror movies I watch (lol jk it’s a lifetime’s worth of trauma 😂), but this was actually much more of a wagashi-centric drama, romance, thriller for me than a spine chiller. And that is not a bad thing at all! I think this series is so successful in part because of how fluidly it combined so many genres into a seamless and engaging story.

My point is, the jacket copy doesn’t quite do it justice. If you like comics that introduce you to artisan crafts and what goes into making them, this is a comic you want to read. If you like enemies to lovers and/or enemies to friends, this is your comic. If you like mystery and thrillers, this is a comic for you. If you like attention to detail and well designed plots and other aspects of writing as a craft, this is definitely your comic! Odds are very good you’ll like this comic, my friend!

Now, lemme give you a couple warnings, though: there is a lot of showing of abuse, violence, and manipulative, if not gaslighting, behavior in here. There is murder, attempted murder, child neglect, the loss of parents, etc. There are some topics I wish the creator had addressed better, such as the domestic abuse aspects, especially earlier in the series. But I promise you, the story is worth it.

Overall, I love this series so much! I’m in pain waiting in line for books 17-19 from my library right now, and I can’t wait to see how it continues. Please read it so we can talk about it!

Now I won't lie. I was not a fan of how Tsubaki and Shiori appeared to be getting close. Not because I am a big fan of Nao and Tsubaki together but they are definitely the lesser of two evils when it comes to which couple I prefer. But I rolled my eyes and said out loud 'are you kidding me'!?! when Shiori told The Proprietress (does she have a name? lol) she was pregnant. Which turned out to be a lie. Which I'm not even sure why she told such a lie? What was she trying to gain from it?
Not sure if they even slept together. Can't remember if one was shown and/or insinuated. But Shiori does ask Tsubaki to sleep with her and get her pregnant. To which he basically tells her not a snowballs chance in hell. Now I just wonder how will his mom handle to news of Shiori not actually being pregnant. Since she's so dead set on getting Tsubaki to inherit the Kogetsuan.

Nao and Tsubaki are clearly still attracted to each other, even if they both are determined to keep their distance out of their own misguided thoughts and assumptions. While they might be along the same line based on their shared history, they seem to keep missing the mark assuming they will only continue to hurt each other or that the other is happy now without them. Nao seems to believe that Shiori is indeed pregnant and now marrying Tsubaki for real after having thwarted their original wedding at the beginning of the series. Meanwhile Nao has her proof and is out to talk to grandpa, but Tsubaki's mother is determined to put an end to that. Did she manage to set something up to frame her for grandpa's death or will this have a different ending now that she's dared to set foot back into the Kogetsuan and the main house.

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I want to know more about the man helping Nao, and how unlucky can Tsubaki be to gain yet another manipulative woman in his life? Shiori's desperation is sad and tragic, but she's essentially the flip side of his mother and I can't stand either of them. You have to wonder where Nao and Tsubaki would be if they didn't have so many outside forces manipulating them.

I am REALLY enjoying this series. It's different and I am so invested in the mystery and in what's going to happen. I dont wanna wait for the rest of these to release...I want them now! That's the worst thing about manga series that aren't complete...the waiting! But I'm pretty sure it will be worth it.

I simply inhaled this volume. Everyone is always scheming and plotting and devising their own plans/goals, but even against all of that, Nao and Tsubaki can't deny their bond and attraction for one another. I always want the next volume, always!!
