A page turner right from the start.

This story was nothing short than spectacular! It was one of those story's that was hard to put down- and even when I did, I found myself thinking about the story. Kenner crafts a world full of vivid scenery and interesting wordly elements. Most of all, he creates compelling characters that I couldn't help but become attached to (and afraid for). My only disappointment was that it ended (although it did so epically) and I'm eagerly waiting for the next book.

More please!

Fantasy, adventure, excellent world building. This book has a large cast with third POV switches. Janis was my favorite, but each character felt necessary. The plot takes unpredictable turns that keeps you enticed and ready for more. Read if you enjoy Star Wars or Lord of the Rings!

This book takes regular fantasy tropes and adds a new flavor to them that keeps things interesting and exciting. It's also enjoyable to read a book with two protagonists who break out of stereotypes and have very human vulnerabilities along with their unique traits. The world building is well done and makes you thirsty for more, so I can't wait to read the next one!

Imagine having the ability to manipulate light. You can use it to peer into the future or conjure a sword like the Green Lantern or maybe even move objects by merely willing it. This is the world of Lightbearers - People who can wield light. The best way to put this would be a spoonful of star wars mixed in a pot of medieval era with a zest of LOTR. The author has created an entire universe with its own suns and moons and their mystical effects.

Uniqueness:
Briefly, the story is about a young boy who is a potentially powerful Lightbearer and is pursued by both the Evinir and the WatchLight. While this one-liner might not sound so original, the execution is far from ordinary, and I will discuss that in detail below. What I found unique and exciting was how the author has not just plainly given some people the ability to manipulate light. He has meticulously created different ways of doing it, each with its own pros and cons. The author has thought a lot about how you can manipulate the same element for destructive and constructive purposes.

Predictability:
The book seemed predictable in the beginning. But by the time I was done, I was reeling from all the twists and turns. It was almost like being on a rollercoaster where initially you can see where you're going. Still, by the end, you are so engrossed in the thrill that you are unable to foresee any upcoming twists even though they are right in front of you.

Writing Style:
The narration is crisp, and the pace goes up and down throughout the book. The author assumes an alternate perspective style of storytelling, which is the most common style these days. We get to see the story from the perspective of many characters. However, unlike many books where the same scenario is depicted from multiple perspectives, the story keeps moving forward even though the point of view changes.

Cost Worth:
The book costs Rs. 300 on the kindle edition. Would I pay for it? Thousand times, yes. It is worth every penny.

Entertaining:
The book was so gripping that it got me out of my reading slump. I had not picked up a book for days, and I could not get myself to read one. After pushing myself to start reading it, my love for reading came back. I remembered why I enjoy fantasy books so much. There is the right amount of suspense and mystery and a generous amount of fantastical just the way I like it. Awakened is the first book in a trilogy, and the first book ended on a high point. I have so many questions and am waiting to find out what happens in the next one.

Verdict:
Awakened is an epic book. A strong storyline and a gripping narration make the book unputdownable. A special thanks to the author, Dan Kenner, for sending me a copy of this book. I truly enjoyed reading the book.

This is the first fantasy novel by author .
There are two main characters- Marric and Janis.
Marric Norst, a sixteen-year-old fletcher’s son is frustrated and quite unhappy by his simple life. That feeling of not being satisfied with his living changes when he meets Janis, an experienced assassin who has been hired by different parties to both protect and kill him.
The story has a twist when Marric learns of his potential as a Lightbearer and the wide range of Light powers, including some that frighten him. Janis finds herself drawn to Marric as he discovers his new powers, but he won’t come into them until his awakening, an event which could prove fatal to him and those around him.

🖌To protect those he loves, Marric must journey with Janis to a sanctuary amidst an underground war. Together, Marric and Janis experience intrigue, adventure, and a prophecy that may prove significant. Marric could awaken at any moment. Read out the book to know what happens to Marris and Janis.

The book is very interesting. It will be keep you hooked and you will be awakened to finish it as soon as possible. Author’s choice of words and the writing style is very classy. The book cover is lovely. Eagerly waiting for second book♥️

This is the first book I have read by
and I am totally impressed with the Author's work. The story is well framed and the characters are rich and strong.
The story resolves around the two main characters- Marric and Janis.

"One more chapter," I told myself... FOUR times!! 🤣
It is a quarter to Midnight and I just finished Awakened by Dan Kenner. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of the Lightbearer Chronicles! It was reminiscent of the Mortal Instrument/Clockwork series by Cassandra Clare. Add a dash of The Hunger Games and a sprinkle of The Lord of the Rings and you have a book that is velcroed to your hands! You can't put it down!!
If you loved the Cassandra Clare books, grab yourself a copy of Dan's book! You'll be itching for book 2!! Hurry up Dan, I need to keep reading 😉 I applaud you, very well done!!

So refreshingly good

I loved this story! It had the familiar elements that make up the fantasy genre but it brought a new outlook on “magic” that is interesting and exciting to read about.

This was a solid, moderately paced YA fantasy novel.

First off we meet Janis, who is an assassin first assigned to kill a target and then in a turn of events told by another group to protect the target. Not her usual job but she doesn't really have room to decline it.

Then we meet Marric, a 16 year old boy who is traumatized by the loss of his friend and lives with his father and stepmother. Marric seems like he'd be the ideal main character for a YA fantasy. He's young, his father insisted he get an education, and he's got no interest in taking over the family business of fletching.

He's also soon to find out that he's going to get magical powers.

What ensues is an adventure that changes both their lives.

I appreciated the simplicity but interesting magic system this world had. The magic isn't overpowered (you can defeat a Lightbringer) but the magic was still powerful enough that you'd be concerned for any regular human facing them.

I think that some readers are going to connect more with one main character over the other.

See, you start off thinking Marric is going to be the hero, that weak, young man who finds enormous strength (and oddly also learns to be a master swordsman in under a chapter) and comes out on top. I appreciate Marric because he is more of a real life hero. He's 16 and thrown into a world where people are killing each other, wielding magic, and he's on the run. He freezes up. He has to be protected. He does NOT have great fighting skills and doesn't really learn any new ones for most of the book. And there is nothing wrong with that. I'm interested to see his character development later in the series.
However, to be honest I was disappointed by one part. When it comes down to a decision, I feel like even after all the foreshadowing, he never stands up and makes that decision. He's pulled along by all these other moving parts. Yes, they move him to where he had wanted to be but he doesn't assert himself in that pinnacle moment. It goes along with his character for the whole book but it also staggered his character growth for me.

Janis is who I connected with the best. Honestly she doesn't seem like a main character at first but as the book moved forward I realized that her development throughout the story was more impactful on me than Marric's.

Together they make an interesting contrast that works within the story. This book is also multiple POV's and we even get some of the "bad" guys POV too which I think nicely rounds out the story.

In Short:
Great magic system, limited worldbuilding outside of the magic system, interesting conflict, steady medium pace book with expected violence level for YA Fantasy. I like Janis more as a MC and felt like her character development was better. But I appreciated the fact that Marric was more true to what a 16 year old boy who never had left his hometown would be. He had a realness about him. There's a lot of foreshadowing and repetition of certain details that I'm guessing will be important later in the series. I'll be picking up the next book at some point.

Dan Kenner has introduced us to a fascinating new world with his debut novel, Awakened. There are select people who awaken with lightbearer powers. The actual abilities vary, but there is some cool stuff here, such as conjuring and seeing. The existence of these people does not seem to be especially well-known, but I get the feeling that will change as the story plays out across the series.

Janis, an assassin who was originally contracted to kill a 16-year-old boy (Marric), finds herself saddled with a new contract that instead tasks her with protecting him. Marric might be awakening soon with lightbearer powers, which makes him a vital asset. Assassins aren't generally characterized to be protectors, so it's an interesting flip that allows for some great character growth for Janis throughout the story. Janis is easily my favorite character. She's good at what she does and has arguably the most fascinating special ability in the book. I'm not going to give away what the ability is - you'll have to read the book to find out (which you should do, dear reader)- but it's something very useful for a rogue-type character.

Janis is who we're introduced to first, but there are 3 point-of-views in the book, including Marric and one of the villains - Prost (although, I see Prost as more of a grey character). We spend the least amount of time with Prost, but he has great potential, and I look forward to seeing where his story goes in the sequel.

The way Kenner introduces us to Marric shows us exactly what kind of character the kid is. He is shown to have some Robin Hood-esque qualities. He longs for adventure beyond the life he has been given, but he also finds himself a bit overwhelmed at times by the adventure he has been granted. He feels like a real 16-year-old to me, which is a plus.

There are a couple of things that kept me from giving the book 5 stars, but I don't want to focus too much on this because there is so much more positive, so I'll keep it short. The book tends to over-explain things, which slowed down the pace for me. We are introduced to these fascinating powers, and we are shown what they can do, but we are also told what they can do, and we are told multiple times. It just felt a little redundant and unnecessary to me. That said, these minor qualms did not affect my overall enjoyment of the book, and this might not be an issue for other readers out there.

I really liked Awakened, and I highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good high fantasy. Without going into spoilers, the ending left me grinning.

PS. Even though this isn't a space opera, this book should also appeal to Star Wars fans. You'll see what I mean when you read it.

I saw this book & its author on TikTok. Dan seemed like a really nice guy, so I bought all his books in this series to support.

I was uninformed it would be a YA series, but it quickly became apparent that it was exactly that. TikTok videos made it out to be a bit more in-depth/mature than it ended up being IMO.

I must note now that I DID NOT finish this book and this rating is based on the 30% that I did read.

What I did like: I think the magic system is cool. The idea is fun & think it has a lot of potential. I appreciated the dual POV. I found Janis more entertaining than Marrick, though. I sensed some similarities in this book from other authors (Sanderson, Paolini) but that could be just because I recently read them. If they are inspiration, that’s cool!

What I did not like:
It DRAGGED. Everything was pretty slow going and I was having to force myself to get through the small chunk I did. Too much repetition, internal dialogue, not enough character or plot development. I wanted to read the entire series, but I can’t waste any more of my precious little time forcing myself to consume something I don’t enjoy.

Had I purchased these books on audio, I think I could have made it through. I could have made it to the crazy twist at the end everyone raved about in the reviews. Being able to do laundry or clean the house while listening could have enabled me to tune in just enough to absorb the info, but not be stuck sitting in one place getting jittery & bored.

This is absolutely not a slight to the author. Again, I think his ideas are great & he seemed really nice on socials. But I guess this just wasn’t for me! *tears* It is clear by the reviews I’m the odd one out here. Maybe one day I’ll have kids who can appreciate it more than I.

Marric was just a normal teenage boy… until the day he wasn’t. Strangers come to town and Marric is told that he’s destined to be a Lightbearer and possess great powers of Light, but he has to make it to the sanctuary before he Awakens because the Awakening could kill him and hurt those around him. Marric has much potential, so not only does Evenir want him, but Watchlight as well. He must be careful and follow his conscience if he hopes to protect his new friends and maybe survive…

This book was phenomenal! I loved learning about Lightbearing alongside Marric and Janis, the assassin assigned to protect Marric. Janis was definitely my favorite character, she reminded me of an older Vin (from Mistborn), but without the powers, obviously. I loved that, like Vin, Janis started out as this cold-cut, independent woman, but she slowly learns to trust those around her while maintaining her personality. Women power and character development are my favorite.

HOWEVER, Narinda is 100% my spirit animal. What’s more me than reading long books and getting annoyed when people interrupt my reading time? 😂 I hope to see more of Narinda in the next book, one short scene was not nearly enough.

I really enjoy Dan’s writing style and the way the story flowed. I hate that it took me so long to read this, but that was about my life and schedule, not a reflection on the book. I can’t wait to read the next one!

This was such a good read. That pacing of it was well done, nothing felt to rushed or out of place.

I loved the world building. Everything from having its own deities, its own profanity of sorts, the three moons with their different lights, and of course the light based magic system. It was all well explained when it needed to be and it was nice to not just be dropped into a world already built and having to decipher things on your own.

The Characters are well thought out. Marrick is a 16 year old boy who is out on an adventure away from everything he knows. He's being told he's special and will have powers awaken while at the same time he's being pursued by people who he's been told are bad. So he's scared, and for good reason. The author does a good job of portraying him as a scared kid. While he's been shown to have some skill with a bow at the beginning of the book, he often forgets that he can be helpful due to him being scared for his life. I really like that just because he's been told he's special he doesn't automatically become some great asset in his travels. It just seems more relatable and believable.

This book is 100% worth the read.

Good book!

I bought this book for a long road trip I was going on, after seeing a few of the author's TikToks. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book. I’m not going to lie, the beginning was slow and predictable. The first half reminded me a lot of Eragon, another really good book. However, I’m very glad I continued to read because the ending was not what I expected. I actually believe the book was structured this way to emphasize the twist which I find crafty and an strategic writing style.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy and is looking for a new author or a new idea. I get major indie vibes here.
I gave a 4 because it was slow going at first. I believe this is YA, and I’m not the target age group so I felt some of the explanations and writing style was a little young, but again I’m not in the target age group. Overall a good read and would recommend.

This book follows 16 year old Marric who lives with his father and stepmother. Unbeknown to him, he is very special and is being protected by an assassin and searched for by an organisation called watchlight. He has the potential to be a light bearer when he awakens. In the meantime he goes on a journey with his new friends to seek refuge but they are pursued.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's well written, the plot is unique and the magic system is fascinating and well explained. It's action packed with battles, magic and twists and turns. It gave me lord of the rings vibes in that a group of unlikely friends go on an adventure. The characters are likeable, I especially liked Janis. I loved her ability to re experience memories in the in between.
There's tension and suspense and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to see where it goes next. I'm looking forward to book two.

This book is absolutely amazing. A great fantasy read.
If you need something to fill that Percy Jackson shaped hole in your heart, give this story a chance ( plus ToG meets LOTR)

Is hard to put down, fast paced and even if in the beginning seems predictable, not even a Seer can predict those plot twists. The author managed to avoid many clisheic traps and created and amazing new world with fantastic powers.

The last 30% of the book makes the difference between 4⭐ and 5⭐. Couldn't put it down, everything happened so fast and there were many twists. I managed to get too emotional invested in the characters and I'm excited to see what's next.

I had this book in my kindle since October and i regret starting it only now.

This book is an amazing read. Such a great ya with friendship, magic and adventure. I love that there is multiple povs. You get the main character but also his companions and even the bad guy. I love that there is different classes of magic powers and they all do different things. Its so unique. I absolutely love that Janis is a highly skilled assassin. Shes not weak or seen as weak despite having no powers. Marrick is sixteen year old whom is coming into to powers he has no idea about. All of sudden the son of a feltchers life turns into an life threatening adventure. He learns about what hes to become and has to make a big choice. This book is perfect for anyone who loves fantasy and magic.

I have to say that I loved the book. It is interesting from the get go and I love how the younger main characters develop. Especially the one who didn’t want to be there to begin with.
I also liked the magical system a lot. Light as a power is simply cool. And the various thing those with that power can do is even better.
The only thing I didn’t like was that he discribed the sky as an orangish red. Really, try to pronounce that. A reddish orange would have been much easier 😂 but as this is the only negative thing I have to say about this book it got five stars.
Really recommend to fantasy readers who don’t need romance in a plot.

Absolutely Loved It!!

Loved that it had all three points of view, told in a land filled with magic. Loved Marric’s journey I just wish his mom was around to see it because she gave up so much for him. Janis was wicked and the ending blew my mind away. Definitely was not expecting Janis to play such a huge role.

One thing I didn’t like as much is the repetition of fighting, maybe it’s personal preference but it did turn me off at times but I pushed through and finished in four days.

Would recommend it to anyone who loves a long-length paranormal, magical book.

This is a great start to an intriguing, capturing series! This book introduces an intricate world where being a Lightbearer could mean many things. There are opposing sides fighting over newly Awakened Lightbearers. There is a rich history worked into the series that is introduced through a variety of characters-both good and evil...

I did put it down at one point, but that was out of necessity. I picked it up as soon as I was able to and finished it that day.

This is an amazing book for young and old readers!

This book is absolutely fantastical. An excellent addition to my fantasy book shelf. A very interesting magic system, very similar to brandon sandersons works. I absolutely loved hearing about all of the types and figuring out how things would work.

Very interesting and unique characters. I read this book in no time.

I liked how the author build up this world of human and light bearer. Marric and Janis throw into a world of magic when they just trying to survive. It has a lot of detail and bring the world before your eyes. Watch light is a group hunting them and will not stop at nothing to get them. Can't wait for book 2.

I really enjoyed this story and the world Dan Kenner has created. There are twists I did and didn't see coming throughout the adventure. I'm excited for the next book because of the loose ends (that go into making a series) and the ending caught me off guard. Great work!

I received a free digital copy of Awakened in return for an honest review from the author himself, Dan Kenner. Thank you so much for this opportunity! I loved this book! I can’t wait to dive into Transformed.

This was such a fun adventure! I had no expectations going into this and if I’m completely honest I knew very little of what it was about all I knew really was this was a high fantasy book. But after finishing this and that ending, I so want to dive into the sequel! I have so many questions!

This book flows really well, it was easy to get lost in the pages. That being said, I will admit not a whole lot happens for a majority of the first half. We’re primarily seeing some world-building as we’re explained who these Lightbearers are, who’s after Marric and why they want him. However, despite the slower pace and lack of events, I found myself never being bored as I was captivated learning about this fictional land. It was actually really interesting. It was written in a way that the world-building made up for the beginning half being uneventful.

I really enjoyed the characters we followed, especially Janis. I loved seeing a strong female character. In a way, she reminded me a little of Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games, Janis had a similar demeanor. Janis was such an entertaining character to follow she was always so sure of herself and even though she attempted not to care, she wanted to make sure Marric stayed safe. Marric was a great character to see grow. At the start, he was a scared small boy, but by the end, he was so much more confident.

From the very start, I couldn’t help but feel a similarity of Awakened to something I’d read before. It wasn’t until I was well into the book that it finally clicked. The premise of the Lightbearers reminded me of the Percy Jackson series. Those that are considered Lightbearers once they awaken receive one of seven abilities. And not everyone awakens at the same time, they all vary and Marric is considered more of a “late bloomer.” This all feels a bit familiar to how Percy Jackson was with the campers getting claimed by their God or Goddess parent.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this. It was such a fun adventurous fantasy! I think if you’re a fan of Percy Jackson then you’ll love this one!

In short: great world-building, magic system, character growth, and I will def read more from Kenner.

Longer version: Kenner has a real gift for world-building. It’s clear from the beginning of the novel that he’s created a world with rules, a past, societies, and cultures, linguistic differences, and complex characters. Sometimes, especially in fantasy, we can’t get a grasp on the world, magic, limitations, or society at large, or else the author does a huge info dump.

Kenner didn’t info dump or drown us with an epic history, even though there is an epic history. Rather, the backstory comes organically from the story as we travel with Marric and Janis.

Great characters and fun twists.
This definitely doesn’t read like a debut novel. I will be reading more from this author.

I was pretty immediately hooked on the magic system, and the ending absolutely guarantees that I’m gonna be reading the sequel. Although a bit expository for me, with more walking and talking than forward character development, I would still happily recommend this book.
