Best book on guided reading. I actually really enjoyed reading it and I'm excited to actually implement the strategies she talks about in the classroom!
By far the best guided reading textbook I've found, even by Jan Richardson. It's not promotional or slick, it's good honest information and advice on how to teach guided reading. I found it very helpful and am teaching a new grade over the summer. Wonderful resource.
This has become my students' favorite guide in planning for guided reading. Easy to use with solid ideas for teaching small group reading instruction at the five stages of reading. I worked with Jan Richardson when she was a literacy consultant in the district I coached in - she was amazing! I've been waiting for this book - I was so excited about it coming out that I ordered two copies (at different times) without realizing it. I'm also using this with reading specialists in the field and they have found it insightful, a consistently used resource in our discussions about children.
Jan Richardson was a military wife and a teacher. Because she was always moving, she had to adapt her teaching to fit many different reading curriculums over the years. She took the best of what she learned and wrote her own book containing a framework and lesson plans to use with any curriculum or reading program. From her introduction: "This book is a step-by-step guide to teaching guided-reading across all grade levels using the following four elements: *Analyzing assessments to identify instructional focus *Prompting students to use strategies when they encounter difficulties *Teaching skills necessary for a specific reading stage *Utilizing guided reading to support and accelerate the reading process
This is a very easy to follow book that really lays out the process for guided reading for all levels. Each chapter addresses a different level of the guided reading process: from emergent through fluent readers. Richardson has included an extensive set of appendices that are very useful for a quick check of expected behaviors for certain levels as well as strategies for each level. I found these strategy and word lists very useful for to make sure I was on target for the different levels I see everyday in my literacy groups. This is a book I plan to read over and over because each time I read it, I see something differently and/or am ready to implement something I may not have been ready for in an earlier read.
I found this book very useful. Towards the end, it got a little repetitive but I think that it was just because I didnt have a student in mind with the problems being addressed. I think the end will be more helpful if I find myself with a struggling student. I liked how Richardson walks through each step of each lesson for the different levels of readers.
I am upset that I didnt have this book years ago. I feel like I've been doing guided reading "wrong" for years and I am excited to begin to use the methods in this book and see my students become better readers.
I love this book! I've moved from upper grades to first grade and didn't feel like I was making the most of my guided reading time. This book gave me the framework that I was looking for along with extremely helpful charts and lists. This book is a keeper!
Very useful ideas and simple plans for managing a reading block with diverse reading levels and abilities. I liked the discussion of how to address the different needs of readers that are working on the same level. It makes me excited to get back in the classroom!
My teacher friends, I highly suggest reading this book if you teach guided reading. Great tips, strategies and lesson plan ideas. I learned a lot from this book and am excited to use this information this year in my classroom.
I love the resources and ideas. It's a great book for teachers new to guided reading. We followed the schedule for the 6-week set up process and it's been working really well! I also appreciate the ideas for centers and things to focus on at each level cluster.
This was a professional book club choice for school and one I enjoyed, although I feel it is more useful for the lower elementary. It still had some nice ideas for all reading groups though and tons of information. Overall, a great resource to have in your library.
Not what I was expecting but ok.....suited best for K-1 teachers....gives a great overview of how to run guided reading in your classroom....would be a good resource for intermediate teachers with struggling students.
This book has a lot of helpful tips and activities to do during guided reading groups. There are some useful templates and charts. The only reason why it is not a 5 star rating is because it repeats a lot of the same material a few times, which got a little annoying.
An excellent reference for guided reading instruction. The book is not terribly user friendly in its layout, but if you spend some time with it, the content is excellent.
This is a WONDERFUL resource for planning individualized small group reading lessons! It provides direction for teachers in creating beneficial lessons for ALL reading levels.
Excellent book for all reading teachers! The book tells you exactly what to do during small group time. I can't wait for school to start to try these new ideas.
Great resource for any elementary teacher. She has clear and concise ideas that help a teacher plan out their guided reading time with students. I refer back to this book multiple times a year.
Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous, although a lot of work to implement. You'll definitely need to take the time to gather or create all materials needed before you start.
