Meck's book "Bilingual and Trilingual Parenting 101" is a bit of a middle ground between "Maximize Your Child's Bilingual Ability" by Adam Beck and "Family Language Learning" by Christine Jernigan. Whereas Beck presents a tiger-parent version of multilingual parenting and Jernigan presents a big-tent version of it, Meck combines seriousness and optimism in a way that feels accessible and realistic.

One of the greatest strengths of Meck's book is that her personal situation involves three very different languages (Chinese, Russian, English) with different writing systems, and this informs every part of the book. The majority of similar literature either ignores non-Latin-alphabet languages completely or mentions them only in a token, uninformed way.

Another strength is that Meck is a great role model. Not because she and her family are perfect, but because she has fallen into a lot of the traps that many of us have or will but unlike most people, she hasn't given up. Instead, she has taken note of lessons learned, looked for new strategies, and redoubled her efforts. This book doesn't have all the answers or all the strategies, but it does provide a concrete example that through hard work you can turn around a difficult situation. Meck herself reiterates that if your child or children are not speaking your language you are the problem and you have to create the solution.

What I liked least about the book was that, to me, it felt like I'd already heard everything. Of course, that isn't necessarily a fair assessment since I have been following Meck's youtube channel for years (like I do all youtube channels about multilingual parenting) and I have already read upwards of a dozen similar books before.

Knowing Meck through that context, I suspect there will be a fourth, and eventually a fifth version of this book, as her journey continues to evolve. Perhaps in one of those she will update the equation to "exposure X need," which is the version I prefer. Either way, I look forward to her future work and will continue to follow her story.

As an avid language learner myself, most of the concepts in this book were already familiar to me. However, overall, I think it is an excellent guide for parents who do not know where to begin.

In my opinion, raising a bilingual child is relatively easy - the real challenge begins when three or more languages are involved. Teaching literacy in all of those languages is even more demanding. We have discussed this topic many times, and it seems there are still very few resources available on multilingual upbringing. That is why I find this book to be such a valuable source of motivation and support for parents.

Raising multilingual children requires an enormous amount of effort, and many parents eventually give up. Yet learning a language later in life is far more difficult than growing up with it naturally from childhood.

Thank you, Ka Yee Meck, for the inspiration!

Some applicable concepts but almost everything is very straightforward and broadly known.

I listened to the audiobook. Full of useful ideas. Reassuring on the way we are raising our child mainly bilingual but introducing two more languages to make learning easier later on.
