Love & Poetry… Open Mics & Late Nights… Vodka & Bad Decisions…
For Julian Brooks, love is poetry, open mics often lead to late nights, and too much Vodka… went hand in hand with making bad decisions. While trying to let go of the woman who he thought would end up being his wife, he decides the bachelor life is a much simpler option. Afterall, who wants to keep getting their heart broken? One Saturday night after an open-mic changes everything for him when he lays his eyes on her; making his simple bachelor life... complicated.
Unfortunately, this book gave me too much. We got a lot of family drama, ex drama, finance talk etc. I appreciate background on a character but I wish it had focused more on the romance. It felt like it dragged on and was all over the place. Because of all the other things we were bombarded with, I didn’t feel the chemistry between the couple. Because of that I wasn’t invested in this couple enough to really root for them during the times the book dragged.
When the big brother's friend, who is a get-around, wants to date his little sister- that is this story in a nutshell. Julian was an educated poet and great writer. He was also a slacker. He met Will's sister, and his heart was ready. Layna had a, just call it a not-so-squeaky clean past, so in my view, they should have been good together. The back story with Julian's dad and his grandfather was sad, and then again, it was surreal. The few editing issues distracted me, but the story was a good read.
Have to admit I didn’t like Julian from books 1 and 2. I had doubt that he could be redeemed. Kya Montague not only redeemed Julian she made me love him more than Wesley. I’m happy to see him find love. Now I want to see more of Julian and Lana. Who knows, maybe they will show up in another couple’s book.
I felt I was reading about my life in parts of this book.
I’ve had a pleasure of reading book 1 and book2, but let me tell you, book 3 brought some emotions out of me that I thought was long gone. The feeling of betrayal, the feeling losing a loved one, finding love, I relived it all reading this book. I just couldn’t put it down. There is nothing I would change in this book or done better because Kya laid it all on the line in this book. Just waiting on the next book. You have a unique gift, and I’m glad to be of the ones witnessing you blossom into a powerhouse of a writer.
This book had me laughing to the point of tears at some points! I am so glad Julian got his happily ever after because Lord knows he had so much love he wanted to share. Of course things became rocky at one point, which is to be expected but in the end it all worked out. Julian’s growth during their separation was needed and once Layna realized how much she loved Julian she forgave him and from there they made their way back to one another. Lastly, Peaches was annoying and the nerve of Derrick to try staking his claim. Boy bye! 😂
I almost didn't finish this book because I thought it was going to be about Maya and D and I had enough of Julian in the prior books , but I am glad I kept reading. Julian had to deal with things from his past and the meet of layna both which taught him some things about himself which he didn't want to face the truth about as well as finally learning what real love is. I felt like when he understood it he should have went and gave Serenity and Wesley an honest apology
I loved the story of Julian and Lana. I was glad to see Julian's life after Serenity. I especially loved Julian's growth in this book. The growth between him and his dad's relationship throughout the course of the book was a beautiful thing to see. I feel like we watched Julian become a man. I also loved the poetry and the idea of communicating their love through their poetry. That really some to me. Happy these two got their HEA. They worked hard for it. Didn't enjoy the 3rd qtr breakup or the surprise gunplay but neither derailed the story. Overall beautifully written.
I had so many back and forth feelings about Julian but this book sealed the deal for me. I love Julian. He just wanted love but like many of us he was going about it the wrong way and he needed to heal first.
Lana was the PERFECT woman for him and I loved them both so much! Kya knows how to throw in a twist at the ends of her books that makes you grab your chest.
I love this series so much! Kudos to the narrators. Y’all did that! SUCH A GREAT listen! 🥰🥰🥰
Julian’s story is one that needed to be told; to understand how his character loved. He finally found love in Layla only to loose it. Now he has to win back the woman who warmed his heart and made him know what love is. Good story and great ending to this trilogy.
OMG! I absolutely loved this book and especially enjoyed the narration by Trei Taylor & Winston James! Had this been a duet verses a dual, it was have been even better. But ohhhh how this NTMA blew mine mind! Impressive, satisfying, exciting, and truly worth me going to book 1 of this series. Well done Kya! 💛💚💜
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Julian’s story. I’m pleasantly surprised that he was able to find a LOVE OF HIS OWN! I love Julian and Zion together. I love their love story, their ups and downs. This was a breath of fresh air!!
Please be sure to read books 1 and 2 before you read this book. You will have insight on Julian. I tried real hard to like him and give him a fair shot at the beginning of this book he just wouldn’t let me be great. He got some redemption from me by the end of the book though.
I loved reading A Love of My Own. I am so glad Julian got a story, but I am still so invested. I was waiting for the wedding. Curious what happened to Derrick, he was stalking her all this time, and...
Although I thought this book was well written, I'm still not sure how I feel about Julian based on his actions from the previous book. But, it was good.
I read the story simultaneously with the audiobook(available via book funnel)
First, the cover is beautiful. A beautiful display of black love. Layna and Julian is an entire vibe. Their chemistry is chef’s kiss 💋
Initially, I thought Julian had some stalker tendencies after reading ‘A love like this’ with Serenity and Wesley. I am happy I gave this story opportunity because I love Julian. He loved hard when he wanted to be in a relationship, but he also knew he had to work on himself. I love the growth I seen in him from the beginning. Although, he was a ladies man I loved his honesty with whom ever he was dealing with friends with benefits(FWB) situation (not including his ex, he was honest with himself about that). It started with the mention of Serenity, but once he met Layna she was no longer in the equation.
Layna is a feisty , sassy and strong woman who doesn’t play no games with Julian. She was getting over a situation with her ex and moved in with her brother ( Julian BFF) and his wife. I love their chemistry and their communication. When Lena showed up for him when he visited his grandfather, I knew she was the one right there. They definitely had some ups and downs (messy FWB situation and an ex), but definitely a HEA.
Their poetry is organic and pure, raw and energetic. I listened to their story twice. This is a must listen 👂🏽
Let’s talk about the narrators, and the background, while listening to this audiobook. I felt like I was in the presence of each of these characters. During the poetry, the sound effect was such an unexpected touch. It felt like I was sitting in the room with them. And I love that they narrated the books according to the mood and scene of the characters. The way they narrated this book and set the blueprint for how an audiobook is supposed to be narrated. Unique and well done audiobook! Thumbs up to Kya Montague
Hmmm 🤔, does Julian realize I’ve read books one & two of the “love series” & have insight to your creepy a$$ delusional attraction to Serenity Johnson⁉️Oh boy, how quickly you’ve (conveniently) forgotten your romantic obsessions!…dated⁉️…who⁉️No boo, you & Serenity ONLY had one date, which incidentally doesn’t qualify as a date because she didn’t stay long enough to get her order of wings & french fries. Additionally, horrified by Julian’s ode to “Serenity” poem while “shaking the hand of God” as Serenity simultaneously pole vaulted out of the venue…DATE OFFICIALLY OVER weirdo 🤭😂😂!!! …Hence, Julian’s delusional recollections Thereafter, there’s no continuity between “A Love of My Own (The Love Series - Book 3)” and the previous other two books of this series. …again this book 📖 and Julian’s story should be a standalone too! 🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️🙄‼️
I could not wait to get into this book. I knew Julian was a man who loved hard, and knew his story would be something special. This is my favorite book in the series. Julian and Layla’s story is a story of love, heartbreak, and redemption. It is multi-layered and worth the journey. Definitely adding to my favorites. Great job!
This book beautifully explores Julian's journey from heartbreak to unexpected love. It captures the essence of self-expression in our community with poetic prose and vivid open-mic scenes. Julian's inner struggle and the introduction of a mysterious woman add depth. This book is a powerful reflection of the Black experience, celebrating resilience and the capacity for transformation.
