The Riptide #1-3

Riptide: the Complete Series

Rate this book

Steamy hot action, on and off the field, with the unlikeliest of couples. Intense rivalries. Forbidden love. Second chances.

These players may be titans of the game, but once time expires, can they find the love they’ve been searching for?

THE RIVALRY: Heath and Sam are two quarterbacks battling for the starting spot on the Los Angeles Riptide, but their past fling and intense chemistry make it difficult to ignore the powerful and inconvenient attraction they share. Their love affair could destroy everything, including their Super Bowl hopes, or maybe it could finally give them something—or someone—to win for.

ROUGH CONTACT: As a rookie kicker trying to make it to the final roster of the Los Angeles Riptide, Jamie shouldn’t have anything to do with the kicker they’ve just fired. While Neal might be a football legend, he’s also a man, struggling with failure and rejection. He should stay far away from Jamie, but a chance meeting brings them together, and an unlikely connection means it’s impossible to stay away, until they finally realize that it must be love. Fate might have united them, but football could destroy them—unless they learn how to stand together.

THE RED ZONE: The one thing out-and-trying-to-be-proud defensive star Spencer Evans has always wanted besides accolades and lots and lots of wins is acceptance. But he’s never gotten it, and ten years into his career, he’s tired of waiting. He turns to an old friend—and an old crush—hoping that with agent Alec’s help, Spencer can change everything about his life he’s come to hate. Including, maybe even finding love with the one man who’s always eluded him.

Amazing!

I love the author's writing style.
It is completely immersive, allowing you to effortlessly imagine yourself as part of the story.
The characters are all football stars or closely associated with the game.
They all share a common theme of wanting, perhaps needing to be seen for something else other than football and to simply be loved for themselves.
These three books are filled with plenty of grid iron action both on and off the field.
Do yourself a favor and dive into this wonderful series.

Before starting this series I was firmly "meh" on the concept of football romances, but now I genuinely can't get enough. The way Beth Bolden writes has always resonated with me, and her talent really shone through with these emotional, complex characters. Heath, Sam, Neal, Jamie, Spencer, and Alex didn't have much in common besides their chosen career path, and that made it even more exciting to unlock their secrets and find out what made them tick. Each couple's romance highlighted a different aspect of football, and it was fascinating to learn so much about the sport while getting to know and love the characters as people. As always, Beth blew me away with her swoony, slow-burn connections, and while there were times when the UST was so thick I could barely breathe, it was always worth the wait in the end.

Individual reviews below!

The Rivalry (5/5 stars)

I've read several sports romances, but not many measure up to the epic love Heath and Sam shared. Their journey wasn't easy: misunderstandings, rivalries, and fears threatened to derail their relationship before it got off the ground. Instead of giving up, Sam and Heath fought to stay together, and that made me love their happy ending even more.

Heath was a complicated character. To the outside world, he was a superstar quarterback: focused, determined, and unstoppable. In reality, he had a lot of issues that stemmed from his upbringing. He spent most of his life in "survival mode", doing everything he could to be the best and stay in control of his life. Even after meeting Sam and letting something wild and unpredictable take hold during their quick fling, he still ended up pushing Sam away in favor of his routines. Their story could have ended then and there, but in a twist of fate Sam ended up being traded to Heath's team as the new backup quarterback. Heath initially resented Sam for what he represents--the truth that he isn't invincible and can't be a football player forever--but he couldn't completely avoid him when they needed to train together every day. Heath swung back and forth between pushing Sam away at work and craving his company in private until I didn't know how to define what they were--not exactly lovers, but certainly not just friends.

A big focus of this story was Sam's and Heath's journey of self-discovery and personal growth. I'm glad Beth decided to go this route instead of making "coming-out" the biggest theme, because it added so much depth to the story. By the end of the book, Heath had worked through most of his fears and insecurities and Sam gained discipline and confidence in his skills as a football player. Though Sam and Heath's relationship was a catalyst for change, I think it's important to clarify that each man's growth happened individually. No one can single-handedly save someone who doesn't want it, and we saw that with Sam and Heath. At the beginning, Heath didn't think anything was wrong with his life, so he had no desire to make any changes. Meeting Sam made him realize that things could be different, but he had to decide for himself to start on a path to actually being different.

I loved getting to see Sam and Heath grow into themselves and fall in love with each other. As Sam says, "He’d wanted someone who stuck, who cared about him no matter what, who always had his back. Heath, despite all the odds being stacked against them, was sitting here, telling Sam that he was that guy. Promising to be that guy." In the end, Sam and Heath got exactly what they wanted and needed: "Someone he loved, who loved him in return, who would gladly walk across the screaming hot coals of public opinion, hand in hand."

Rough Contact (5/5 stars)

Neal and Jamie's romance was intense in a way I wasn't expecting, and their journey extended far beyond the confines of a football field. I've never thought about the intense pressure that all NFL kickers face, but wow did Neal's intro set me straight. What struck me first about him was how razor-sharp his focus was in face of extreme pressure, but I only had a few seconds to take it all in before Neal's world shattered around him. To say I felt his shock and devastation feels like an understatement--I was completely caught off guard and even more upset by the far-reaching consequences of a single bad kick. I can't blame Neal for spiraling into guilt and shame after how his team and ex-lover treated him, but the way the Riptide decided to line up trials for his replacement was completely bonkers. I don't even know much about football and I could tell how weirdly pressured and extreme things were for Jamie during tryouts. I've always believed that football is all about the team, but if anything Jamie and the other potential kickers were kept isolated and in competition with each other at all times. I'm so glad Sam was there to make Jamie feel like he had a community around him, and as an added bonus it brought Neal into the right place at the right time to meet him. At first, I thought it might be uncomfortable when Neal and Jamie interacted, but much to my delight they found their rhythm pretty effortlessly. It was so cute how outraged Neal got about all the hoops the team made Jamie jump through, and I loved how firmly on Neal's side Jamie always was.

With a story so focused on one character's emotional healing, it would have been easy to lean on the romance aspect to magically fix all of Neal's problems. I'm so glad Beth Bolden chose a different direction, because watching Neal struggle and work through his emotions made for a much more moving journey. Jamie was absolutely Neal's cheerleader, but it was Neal who had to choose to move forward instead of living in the past. I felt so proud of every small step forward he took, and knowing that he was working towards his own personal happiness--not someone else's idea of redemption or anything else--made it even better. Yes, it meant Neal's relationship with Jamie was one long, drawn-out slow burn, but it was seriously worth the wait for how intensely passionate their chemistry ended up being. I could feel these men's emotions bleeding out all over the place when they finally kissed for the first time, and when they let down the last of their walls nothing could keep them apart. I believed so much in the strength of their connection that it kinda felt like a letdown to see the two of them fall into the same pitfalls of miscommunication and secret-keeping as so many other couples do. Looking back, I can see that Neal and Jamie did need one last push to make their relationship even more solid, but you'd better believe I was hating all the drama with Shane and the team in the moment. Thankfully the drama ended up being more of a footnote than a spectacle, and Jamie and Neal showed the whole world that their love was worth the risk.

The Red Zone (5/5 stars)

What an amazing, swoony romance. I didn't even like Spencer when I met him in the previous books in this series, but now his and Alec's romance has topped the list of my all-time favorites.

There was so much to love about this story, starting with the way Beth transformed Spencer from a person I begrudgingly accepted to a man I desperately wanted to see happy. Usually once I've formed an opinion about a character there's no changing my mind, but I wasn't prepared to see just how much Spencer had been dealing with behind the scenes. It's not that I excused all his actions--and neither did Spencer himself--but seeing him draw a line in the sand and make a real effort to turn his life around was incredibly moving. The inner strength it must have taken to be so brave and vulnerable is unimaginable to me, and I have a huge amount of respect for Spencer because of that. Once he set his mind to the task of being authentically himself, nothing got in Spencer's way--not Alec's hesitance to become his agent or any of the Riptide players' initial misgivings. It felt almost magical to watch as Spencer rose above all the petty digs from teammates and mistakes from his past to become the best version of himself, and not once did he falter once he made up his mind.

As if the evolution of Spencer's character wasn't enough to make this story special, his romance with Alec took this book to entirely new heights. I thought I knew quite a bit about Alec from the other books in this series, but this story made me realize how much more there was to uncover. I loved reading the flashbacks to Alec's first days as an agent and learning about the nine-year-long history he and Spencer shared. I never would have guessed their romance had taken such a circuitous path, and knowing how long they'd been pining for each other made their reconnection feel even more incredible. I had so much fun watching as they casually circled each other at first, each too afraid to trust that they might have a real chance to be together. Thanks to Chase's meddling, the two of them had plenty of excuses to see each other, and I should have known it'd only be a matter of time before Spencer took the leap of faith. His pursuit of Alec was just as steadfast and determined as his approach to leaving the Stars, and I was thrilled to see Alec's defenses drop in response. If there was ever a couple that felt like they were meant to be, it was Spencer and Alec, and that passion translated into mind-meltingly hot nights together.

The combination of Spencer's journey and the way his and Alec's romance unfolded made for a compelling story that lifted me higher and higher with every chapter. I felt like I was on top of the world by the time I reached the end, and while I'm absolutely ecstatic to know that everything turned out the best way it possibly could have, I'm also not ready to let these two go!

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this series. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.

This box set contains 3 great books. My favourite is Neal and Jamie’s story, and how Neal moves through his failure and grows as a man with lots to look forward to with Jamie. The characters are a group of fun, interesting people, and Bolden’s writing makes the sport and romance both interesting.
The Rivalry-4 stars-Heath and Sam meet on a boat trip, and when Heath has his first kiss from a man, a part of himself slots into place. They have a fling, fall in love, then part to return to their jobs, both of them being quarterbacks for different football teams.
Months later, Heath’s weak shoulder means they need a backup, and it’s a chance given to Sam. They try to be friends, can’t help but become lovers, but carry their own issues.
If Heath lets go of being a quarterback, he has nothing left, it’s been his lifeline. Sam is challenged with working hard instead of coasting on his natural ability. As Heath works through the roots of his unhealthy driven approach, he begins to be open to passing the job to Sam.
A great story with lots of complexity, interesting characters, and strong personalities.
Rough Contact-4 stars-Neal misses a kick that ends his job with the Riptide, and goes into a 6 month long depression. Then he meets Jamie at a pool party thrown by Sam and Heath.
Jamie is auditioning, with nine other guys, for the job of kicker. He, along with many, think Neal was treated unfairly. They’re also attracted to each other, which complicates everything.
It turns out they’re each other’s star because Neal teaches Jamie a lot about dealing with the pressure in kicking, and Jamie makes Neal see there’s a whole lot more life for him to live.
They deal with the secrecy, the competition for the job, a new job for Neal, and lots more. They come through it all and their dreams come true.
I love Jamie, a romantic guy who’s unafraid of expressing his emotions, and Neal, who faces his past and creates a future.
Lots of good moments with team members, a lovely scene of their date at the planetarium, great read.
The Red Zone-4 stars-Alec is a great agent for all his queer players on the Riptide. The one that got away, Spencer, has been injured and is getting ready to come back.
Spencer has been on the Stars team for 9 long years, taking the abuse from players and lack of support from management, while becoming the best defensive player in the NFL.
After his injury, a good hard look makes him decide he wants a better life. He’s ready to seek Alec out to become his agent, and to try to get traded to the Riptide. He’s made some careless remarks to the gay players over the years, but makes amends and friends on the team.
As they pursue a trade, Alec and Spence also finally admit to their feelings for each other, and neither has to go it alone.
A feel good story, with justice and camaraderie thrown in. Great book.

I received this ARC for free, and am glad to provide my honest review as a thank you for this book.

THE RIPTIDE SERIES is a terrific set of the three books in Beth Bolden’s m/m football sports romance series, and is well-written and immersive. Ms Bolden combines on-the-field action with great character-and world-building in a way that will complete engage every reader. Perfect for bingeing!

THE RIVALRY (Riptide #1)

Excellent rivals to teammates/friends to lovers, The Rivalry by Beth Bolden is about Heath Harris and Sam Crawford. Ms Bolden lets us be party to Heath and Sam’s immediate attraction and then the host of daunting complications that face them. Ms Bolden’s characters are real and readers will empathize with their fears and uncertainties even as they root for their happiness.

I especially appreciated Ms Bolden’s matter of fact representation of mental health professionals and the underlying understanding of the value of mental health as equal in importance to physical well-being.

Look forward to the rest of the series!

ROUGH CONTACT (Riptide #2)

Rough Contact is the second in Beth Bolden’s Riptide series, about a fictional NFL team. It’s a well crafted story that I couldn’t put down.

Neal Fisher and Jamie Wright meet by chance. Neal is reeling from a life-changing missed goal, and Jamie is one of the prospects brought in to vie for his position.

Beth Bolden’s characterizations are rich and nuanced, and the plot is page turning. This is the first I’ve read of Ms Bolden’s work, and I’m eager to dive into her backlist.

THE RED ZONE (Riptide #3)

The Red Zone is the third in Beth Bolden’s excellent m/m football Riptide trilogy.

Spencer Evans and Alec Mitchell have a decade of history between them. The top defensive player in the NFL and one of the first openly gay players in the league was always on this sports agent’s radar, but their relationship, such as it was, was limited to the occasional conversation and some texts, none of which fully revealed their growing feelings and respect for the other.

Ms Bolden’s story is impossible to put down, and Spencer’s determination to finally live truthfully is a thrilling and uplifting journey to witness. Seeing him decide to use his voice and position to shed light on the abuse he endured during his career and find joy in being fully himself is heady stuff indeed.

The Red Zone is a delightful, powerful story, and a terrific conclusion to the series.

This was a great bundle of the books.

The Rivalry
I liked this overall. While there were moments that the book felt too long and sometimes repetitive, we really got to see Heath’s growth throughout. Heath has never allowed himself to consider his attraction to men and Sam just got off a bad breakup. Meeting each other in normal circumstances may have led to different challenges, but both guys are quarterbacks in the NFL. Trying to manage how to work together while figuring out who he is and what makes him happy was not easy for Heath. I liked seeing them figure it out, though. I loved the friends and family of both guys.

Rough Contact
Although I liked Sam and Heath’s book, I liked this one just a slight bit more. This seemed to flow a bit better, perhaps because there wasn’t near as much angst in this book. There was an immediate connection between Neal and Jamie despite lots of reasons there shouldn’t be, but I loved how they were able to work though it all together. Where Neal had some reservations, Jamie made him feel worthy and fought for them. I liked the feel good vibe of Neal and Jamie’s story.

The Red Zone
I think this was my favorite of the series. The books just kept getting better. I wasn’t too sure about Spencer in the very beginning, but holy cow did I fall in love with him. His story broke my heart, and I loved watching him work to reclaim himself and his happiness. I liked Alec from the other books, but really getting to know him was a treat. These guys were destined to be together, and I was glad that they were able to recognize that their time had finally come. I loved the fight back against the abuse, and I love this found family. This book was 4.5 stars for me.

This is an excellent complete series for the Riptide Football Team. The stories are very well written. Obviously the author knows her football. This series has three full books. The first being The Rivalry. This is the story of Heath Harris and Sam Crawford. Their chemistry is off the charts but they have a difficult path to navigate. The second is Rough Contact. This story is about Neal Fisher and Jamie Wright. Both of them are trying to find their place in life. Jamie is at the start of his career and Neal is at the end. It was great to see how they help each other adjust to their new realities. It finishes up with The Red Zone. I really enjoyed all three books but I have to say that The Red Zone was my favourite. This is the story of Spencer Evans and Alec Mitchell. Spencer is a defensive star that is out as a proud gay man. Unfortunately he isn't in a supportive and healthy environment. After an injury, he decides that he needs to change things up. He wants out of the toxic environment that he is currently trapped in. He reaches out to an old crush for help. Alec is sports agent and represents quite a few gay players. Together they work to find Spencer a healthier work environment and some personal happiness. This is their story.

This book is very well written and is easy to read. You will get caught up with each couples story and be cheering them on to the end. I really enjoyed this series. It is a great sports series.

I received an ARC from Neon Rainbow and am leaving my honest opinion.

(ARC Review)

I really enjoyed The Riptide Series by Beth Bolden. The first book is called The Rivalry and it's about Heath and Sam, the second one is called Rough Contact and it's about Neal and Jamie, and the last one is The Red Zone and it's about Alec and Spencer. All the protagonists appear in all three books and even in other series like Food Truck Warriors (which I started after finishing this series!)

I've read many mm books related to sports. This is one of my favorite tropes, but not many related to football because... I don't get it! But I must say that this series is so well written and well developed, that despite "not understanding" the game, I was able to easily follow the stories and also understand some of the problems that the main characters suffer from, or what causes them. and why they act in a certain way.

All three books talk about dealing with mental issues, whether it be depression, anxiety, or even some kind of internal homophobia, within a game that is brutal and extremely masculine, and how to begin to accept yourself and others. Understand that we are all different and unique, but at the same time equal, and that we have the same right to be happy as anyone else.

And of course all three are quite steamy, and the dialogues are well balanced between the right amount of angst and fun.

Highly recommended.

I received I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Beth Bolden very well might be my favorite football romance author of all time. She just gets it and this series is fantastic. Each story was fantastic on its own and the chance to read all three at once was great!

How could you not fall for Heath and Sam in the first of the series? They might be my favorite couple out of the three stories. A little bit of chuckle, a dash of angst and a dynamic chemistry is a great recipe. The second book is Neal’s redemption story with the help and support of the ever optimistic and supportive Jamie was also amazing. Getting a glimpse of Alec in their story was a good setup for him and Spencer in the last of the series. The two of them share a long history and the turbulent environment that Spencer is currently in make for a fantastic conclusion. I enjoy that the characters from the prior story are still involved in following stories. I haven’t read any of the Food Truck series but will definitely be reading Chase’s story-he’s a fun side character in the stories and happy he gets his own. Nobody does football like Beth! Great collection of stories all in one set! I received a complimentary copy and this is my honest and fair review.

Sometimes, you gotta take a day off. Professional sports are difficult when trying to meet the team's and your own personal expectations. But, when your challenger is a potential/past/future personal relationship, the navigations are more delicate. When you make sports your life, it's easy to get lost. Trying to find yourself and hope others find you also can lead to a delicate balancing act. It's extremely brave to be out and proud. It is harder when you have the burden of a toxic relationship/environment. Friends and found family become crusial for a support structure. Each of these men, these couples are faced with challenges that make them look at themselves, their relationships and how they choose to live their lives. Ms Bolden wrote a series of fun stories that bring us onto the field with the men and we to walk the paths with them and dodge the hills and dips in their lives. Nicely done, well writtem, amazing characters! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I am normally a bit ambivalent about sports stories. They have to be really good to snag my attention and the sport itself really doesn’t matter. Basketball, hockey, football, soccer, tennis, you name it. Beth Bolden’s Riptide series definitely snagged my attention. These guys are everything. I think my favorite is Sam and Heath’s story but that is probably because I read it first. I had already learned about the characters because I had read the Food Truck Warriors series first, not realizing when I started it that they were connected, albeit loosely. Although, I have to admit Spencer and Alex’s story was amazing too. Again, I knew them from the same series. These characters all have such depth and they quickly get you addicted to their stories. I couldn’t put them down once I started.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. They're all interesting reads which have a great deal of depth. The characterisation is good all round, and the plot in each story flowed really well. All of the stories are quite moving, and not without their fair share of angst. They're not your straightforward sport romance, they're not all fluff and fairytales. The story telling is raw and shows how lonely being a top athlete can be. I liked all of the books and the characters, all of whom showed great development. Must admit though that my favourite character was Heath from The Rivalry, I just wanted to jump into the story and hug and cuddle him. A well written set of books, which are well worth a read.

I have to say, I really enjoyed all three of the books. If I had to rank them from most favorite to least, I'd say my favorite is the red zone, followed by the rivalry, followed by rough contact. And still, all books are on the solid 4 star location of "really liked this".
They all have their own individual things that make them special, and interesting, and unique. The rivalry is a friends to lovers to enemies to lovers, with all the emotions those changes come with. Rough contact is a good forbidden love story. And the red zone is a delicious slow burning second chance story. Plus we get some cameos from characters in other novels, some I read before and some I haven't still.
I liked all three books, so for me the box set is definitely a win

Sports romances are my jam and Beth Bolden’s Riptide series is my go-to recommendation every time.

From her fabulous world building to her sometimes stubborn but loveable characters, Ms. Bolden’s Riptide series is not to be missed! Her stories offer something for everyone … rivals to lovers, instant attraction, age-gap, reuniting with lost loves, and a lot of chemistry between her MC.

I enjoyed this series, all of the books are great reads. The characters are wonderful and each story flowed very well. There are a lot of emotions and quite a bit of angst in each story. The characters are interconnected through the books and it is great to see how the MCs mature and grow throughout the series. I was happy to read the complete series as I loved being able to read the books directly back to back.

I love the way Beth writes, usually, but this series was soo full of football lingo and details I got bored. I love the Piranhas series she has put out recently, it just doesn’t seem to have as much in depth football stuff I Don’t care about. There is nothing wrong with these books they are very informative about the sport, that just wasn’t for me this time. The relationships were great, their storyline was wonderful, I just couldn’t get past all the lingo and details.

I read each of these stories when they were published, but it was a gift to be able to read them again as one continuous saga in one super volume. Great football stories, wonderful main and supporting characters, Beth has given American football fans special insight into the sport, and hope for a future where players and anyone in the sport can be their true, authentic selves. Bravo!

I love football and gay romance so this series was right up my alley. There was quite a bit of heat going on in the series, so much so I thought at times I might spontaneously combust 😉. Don't miss out on this series and if you want more gay football action try the Miami Piranha novels by Beth Bolden as well

Phenomenal

An absolutely amazing series. All 4 Riptide stories in one collection. We get the love stories of all our favorites. Sam and Heath, Jamie and Neal, Spencer and Alec. With plenty of attention to Chase and Tate who's story we read in the Food Truck Warriors series.

All three of these books are fantastic and the boxed set is just sexy!! Heath and Sam in the Rivalry, Neil and Jamie in Rough Vontact, and my absolute favorite of the series is The Red Zone with Alec and Spencer. I love rereading all of these books. Hot guys and football!!!

Really nice set of sports romance books with likeable characters and engaging plots. Easy to read in a box set!
