Without a Hitch

From Amazon best-selling author Avery Maxwell comes a laugh-out-loud romcom where a grumpy big-city billionaire collides with a sunshine small-town girl, sparking irresistible banter, disastrous “I do’s,” and a whirlwind romance that proves love never goes according to plan.

“A wedding is the beginning of the end.” —Lochlan Blaine
Look, I’ve seen firsthand what marriage does to a man. I’m not interested. You want to take the leap? Fine. But have the decency to elope. Leave me out of it.

And then I see her. The happily-ever-after-loving bridesmaid at the wedding I couldn’t get out of.

This flower-wielding bombshell is all wrong for me. But one night together is enough to convince me that she could be the answer to my problem. All I need is three weeks with her…

“Weddings are magic.” —Tilly Camden
I love love. And weddings. That’s how I land the best job in the world: professional bridesmaid. Brides hire me to make sure their big day goes off without a hitch…usually while dressed in taffeta.

I can’t wait until I find the one. The cranky, three-piece-suit-wearing Adonis who smirks at the idea of happily ever after is definitely not him. Lochlan Blaine has “heartbreaker” written all over him.

I should know better. But when a panty-melting one-night stand turns into an offer I can’t refuse, what’s a bridesmaid to do? It’s only three weeks. It’s just business.

I can’t possibly get my heart broken. Can I?

I write steamy small towns with big found families—the kind of romances that make your heart race and your soul sigh.

It was a nice romance read.
I would have enjoyed it much more if there wasn’t a plethora of side characters and names that gave me a headache trying to catch up with all of them. Also, I wanted more scenes with the mcs’ instead of weddings.

Oh, Lochlan. You big dumb dummy. You’re lucky you see Tilly so clearly because sometimes you can’t see past your own issues to realize what’s right in front of you! And Tilly, you deserve to shine. Let yourself do it already!

I know, I know. What about the worries with the Westbrooks? What about the cracks in their foundation? Trust me, you’ll want this story before we dive back into them. Yes, we still spend time with the Westbrook clan, but Tilly and Loch demand your attention right now. He’s bitter, she’s sweet. He’s cold (or trying to be), she’s red hot and can melt the ice around his heart. And they’re exactly what they each need in life, even if they don’t want to see it.

Oddly enough with this tale, both Tilly and Loch needed to let go of some control. Of course, he messed up a whole lot by not being truthful until it all blew up in his face, but Tilly had some issues of her own to recognize and handle. Luckily, she’s got some fabulous family and friends who are willing to help both her and Loch to find their way through to the other side. And when everything comes out, they’ll need that support more than they’d ever imagine.

I adored this curmudgeon and sunshine read because neither was one way the whole time. Tilly and Loch both had their moments of good and not so glowing behavior. They had serious heat. And they could have a love that never quits if they just let themselves. And who knew the one to make their way to that revelation first isn’t the one you’d think? Or that these two are so perfectly matched that they manage to build friendship, partnership, and love without even trying? So get comfy, get the tissues ready, and enjoy the ride. After all, love and lunacy are what life is all about. The author definitely got that right, and in the best way possible!

Oh my gosh I am in love with this book.

I absolutely love the grumpy/sunshine trope and this one delivered in spades. I’m in absolute awe of these two characters and their story.

Lochlan has been burned with love. He’s a grump, very handsome man that will do anything for his family and close friends. His last relationship left him scarred and a completely different version of himself. He will not do commitment, marriage is not for him and that’s his final answer even when the whirlwind that is Tilly falls into his life.

Tilly is all sunshine and rainbows. She’s given a shit hand early on in life but doesn’t let that affect her in any way. She loves love, she’s wants her happily ever after and knows it’s exactly what she deserves and won’t settle for anything less even when her heart wants her to.

From the very first time that Lochlan and Tilly meet the chemistry is there, sizzling away instantly. It’s intense and absolutely fantastic to see.

But even with the amount of chemistry and the strong feelings they both feel they both want different things and neither of them is willing to change what they want for the other.

Watching everything unfold just tore my heart out. I was rooting for these two, needed them to be together but that moment..christ the tears were there and my heart was breaking for them.

The writing flows so easily and the characters capture your heart and you just won’t be able to let them go. I loved everything about this book even the hurts. This is my first read from this author and if the other books are anything like this I’m going to need to read everything.

Oh Tilly and Lochlan, how I love you both!

Tilly, super sunshine with a positive outlook on everything, works for Colton Westbrook, her sisters husbands brother and Lochlan, grumpy billionaire who wants to be left alone, is Colton’s best friend. They meet be chance on a night where Tilly is being paid to be a bridesmaid babysitter. Lochlan immediately set his sights on Tilly and never looked back. They shared one magical night together (the first time they were intimate was HOT. Lochlan is up there as one of Avery Maxwell’s kinkiest men). Tilly snuck out before Lochlan woke up and never expected to see him again.

Weeks later she is hired once again to be a bridesmaid babysitter and Lochlan shows up when he finds out that she will be there. Once again, they have another magical night but they quickly realize that they want vastly different things - Tilly wants marriage and her happily ever after, which Lochlan has been hurt deeply in the past and refuses to get married ever again.

The third wedding that Tilly is hired to be in, Lochlan decides that he can’t live without trying. They agree to a three week work vacation together, but know going into it that it will end after three weeks because neither will compromise their thoughts on a long term relationship.

During the three weeks, we see Tilly and Lochlan get closer and closer. We see their love for each other really light up and explode. But will this be enough? At the end of the vacation, will one of them be able to change and compromise their beliefs so that they can stay together?

As usual with Avery’s books, there are some great side characters (aside from the usual Westbrook’s!). Tilly was so lucky to have such great roommates and friends. Their little cliche showed strong female support for one another, which sometimes I find lacking in romance books. Mable reminded me a lot of GG from the Westbrook Ties Series and she was HILARIOUS!

When everything was brought to light from Lochlan’s past, I like how Tilly stepped up and really showed her true self. I love how she handled all of that.

Ahhh, I just loved this book so much! Tilly and Lochlan were as opposite as two people could be, but when they went away together, we really saw how much they complimented each other and made one other stronger. Tilly was able to get Lochlan to relax, which he never did, and Lochlan was able to help Tilly feel more of a bright light than a wallflower.

I can’t wait for the next installment in the series!

Avery has done it again. This book is amazing. The characters, the story, she has completely outdone herself! I loved every second of it and you will too, and you will find it does all the things to your emotions as you read it! I laughed out loud, I cried and I realized that things that her characters said hit me to my own core and heart, and made the book all the more amazing! You will not be disappointed when you read this story, Tilly and Loch are swoonworthy for sure!

I want to give this book 20 ⭐️‘s!!! I absolutely freaking loved it! It was full of emotions so tangible i could feel them coming off the pages. It felt like I was right there living those emotions with Lochlan and Tilly! The story was amazing! The characters were incredible! Tilly - always the fixer. Lochlan - emotionally shut down. One with a life long dream that the other could never see because of the past. I laughed, I cried, and then I laughed some more. I felt so much sorrow, pain and angst. But in true Avery fashion, she healed my little heart, and Lochlan’s, of course, and gave us the best story ever!! Gah!! What a book! This is a must read for 2022!

OMG! I have never laughed so hard or so long! Lochlan may be super hot and sexy, but he is also short-tempered, rude and far too used to getting his own way. Some may even call him ruthless and controlling, but one glance at Tilly and he is knocked off centre. Lochlan chalks it up to intense attraction after a dry spell, but he soon realizes that there is just something about Tilly that has sparked something deep within him. Tilly, (who her client is calling Abbey, is just trying to keep another bridesmaid in line and out of trouble so that her client, the bride, can have the wedding of her dreams rather than the disaster the disgruntled bridesmaid is trying to create. The smouldering looks Lochlan sends her during the wedding may be distracting, but they are also revving up her lady parts. They agree to a one night only sexual encounter which turns out to be so hot and steamy it is a miracle the hotel didn’t burn down around them. Lochlan wakes to find her gone and soon becomes obsessed with finding the hot and sexy Abbey. As for Tilly, she knows she was playing with fire when giving into to her attraction with the man she knows as Blaine. Deep down she knows that her attraction to him could easily turn to love and that the man who doesn’t believe in marriage and lasting love will break her heart. She does her best to avoid him, while he does his best to break down her resistance. Each feel the soul deep connection, the raging desire, but have taken the opposite stance in the subject of love and marriage.

The rest of their story is filled with hilarious moments (some provided by Lochlan’s family, and Tilly’s irreverent and unfiltered elderly neighbour) that will leave you howling and gasping for air, as well as Lochlan’s determined pursuit of Tilly and her determination to protect her heart and dreams. They both struggle with their uncertainties, doubts and need for control, so keep the tissues handy. Also keep a fan and ice water nearby as Lochlan and Tilly can’t keep their hands off each other and things get scorching hot! I know you will thoroughly enjoy Tilly and Lochlan’s love journey and be happy with this book’s conclusion.

I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

“Without love we’re just going through the motions” -a quote from this book.
5 Sigh Worthy ⭐️.
I love happily ever afters and I love weddings. I feel like what Tilly was doing needs to be a thing for all weddings. I loved Tilly. She was strong and vulnerable. She faced possible disasters and never let that stop her. And Lochlan was what I love to see in a man!
This wonderful story gave me all the feels. It was smexy, funny and romantic. I don’t want to give anything away but know this! It’s a brilliantly done story and I highly suggest it as a summer read. I’m still smiling about it.
Thank you Avery for writing such a great read and thanks again Rick 🤗

Hmm. Parts of this book were excellent and parts were just boring for me. The H/h don't meet until almost 30% into the story. Expensive weddings take front and centre. Tilly and Blaine have a one night stand after the reception. He spots her walking down the aisle and is instantly smitten and seeks her out. Then there are several chapters where they don't interact with each other, (more weddings) and then there's another one night stand after another wedding. The sex scenes were very erotic and steamy, quite over the top.

Something that always makes me cringe and fortunately it doesn't happen a great deal:- every character has a real name, then a nickname, then pet names from different characters, a surname thought to be the first name; then, Tilly is known as Abby, for the weddings. Talk about confusing.

It's evident the author loves weddings and thinks all readers must be champing at the bit to read about them as well. Maybe they are? So, all the filler chapters are completely distanced from the actual romance and you need a shovel to dig it out of the white froth. From what I gathered, the weddings in this book star characters from the author's previous books - which I haven't read - so one big epilogue. There were dozens of secondary characters; including girlfriends, family, wedding guests, brides, grooms, bosses, employees - etc. By 50%, the H/h start interacting much more, but by then I was over it. DNF - sorry.

PS. The writing was fine within itself and other readers obviously are loving this book if you take note of all the 4 and 5 ratings. What was with the random numbers the hero seemed to like? I will probably try another one of this author's books at some stage. 2 stars for okay.

Oy, what a mess…but I still enjoyed big parts of it?

🔺Before I dive into my review, I want to make a note that I reached out to the publicist regarding this book’s need for sensitivity readers and was told they’d address those concerns with the care they deserve. Until those edits are made, I want to make note of them here to better help prepare readers:
• Tilly is of Asian-American heritage. This is described as saying her father is Irish, and her mother has a “tiny percent” of Asian-American heritage. The author then goes on to refer to her complexion as “darker” a lot within a few paragraphs. Her heritage/complexion isn’t mentioned again in the book.
• Tilly is a wedding fixer. Her second wedding is being held in secret because the groom is black, and the bride’s family is racist and wants to cut her off from her trust if she marries him. I don’t think the inclusion of this storyline is a red flag. It is, however, done in a nonchalant way that can be jarring to readers and may undervalue genuine struggles people face in real life.
• Lochlan has some “quirky” tendencies that suggest what many in the general public assume OCD is. He has to keep his skittles separated by color, and in the first chapter from his POV, he talks about buying four ferry tickets because the system kept giving him tickets with an odd number while he needed an even number. He also insisted on sitting on an even-numbered bench on the ferry. This isn’t mentioned after this chapter, and I’m still not certain the author meant to portray him as having OCD. I wanted to point out, however, that this isn’t a great representation of OCD, and it feeds into a misconception of this intellectual disability.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

Onto the review. Let’s break this down with a pros/cons list:

Pro:
• The BEST part of this book is the library wedding sex. I mean, the spice is great. But Tilly and Loch hit this angst-ridden moment that was so incredibly bittersweet. I loved it!

Con:
• This was in desperate need of a strong-handed editor. We could’ve easily done without the first 60 pages and started with the wedding Tilly meets Loch at. Lochlan has the exact same conversation about commitment with every side character in the book (and there’s A LOT of side characters). We didn’t even get to the plot hinted at on the blurb until well over halfway into the book. This really would’ve benefited from being cut down about 150 pages, honestly.

Pro AND Con:
• I loved a lot of the side characters! Lochlan’s family is my favorite. The friendship and respect his parents have for each other despite being divorced? Beautiful. And the way his stepsister molds into his family and has an amazing relationship with his mom? Ugh, I LOVE a good modern family, and this had that!
• I also hated the sheer number of side characters (back to needing a good edit). A lot were from previous books, and it was difficult keeping up with all the different couples. Then there’s the odd insertion of quirky/random characters EVERYWHERE Loch and Tilly go. Seriously, that random old lady at the inn for Colton’s wedding? She’s. Not. Necessary. And if she’s from another book? Reader’s who start with this one don’t know her. Awkward.

Pro:
• Tilly (kind of). I liked that Tilly knew her own desires and wasn’t willing to compromise on what she wanted. She held her ground with Lochlan and worked hard to make her dreams come true.
I was even okay with her innate ability to shove herself into other people’s problems with just the right amount of “Bitch, please” to get her way. Even if it is highly unrealistic. But if you’re going to have Tilly be this knight in shining armor for damsels in distress, maybe don’t kill that part of her character in her major confrontation with the book’s antagonist. Didn’t love that.

Final Thoughts:
Overall, I left this with mixed feelings. I enjoyed Loch and Tilly and thought a lot of their interactions were great, but the book needed a good editing to make it more cohesive.

Spice:

This was fun if you're looking for romcom meets wildly dramatic revenge tale! Grumpy/Sunshine is always fun so I especially enjoyed Lochlan. It was fairly lighthearted despite the revenge plotline, quick moving, and super easy reading. Some of the plotlines were over the top but at least it wasn't boring.

I think this is technically supposed to be a standalone but there are a LOT of side characters that I assume are from other Avery Maxwell books and it was a bit distracting to me. I was confused trying to keep them all straight, but I'm sure it's fun if you've read the other books! Just not if it's your first Avery Maxwell book like it was mine.

The other thing I didn't love, and this is a personal pet peeve, was Tilly's absolute obsession with getting married. I hate the demonization of a character because they want different things. I'm not anti-marriage by any means but I am anti assuming someone doesn't understand love or they are broken or damaged because of they don’t have the patriarchal expectations of marriage. It's 2022, marriage isn't always the goal and that's 100% okay.

Everytime I think Avery Maxwell has created her most amazing characters, and deepest storyline, she goes ahead and throws some serious competition their way! Without a Hitch (WoAH) is without a doubt one of my favorite novels, ever! Not only does Maxwell bring life to her characters and their situations, she does it with humor, intensity, emotion, and serious steam. Seen through the eyes, mind, and actions of Tilly and Lochlan, this story is beautifully crafted, and book hangover heaven!

Maxwell does a truly wonderful job of developing not only her main characters, Tilly and Lochlan, but building a solid foundation of supporting characters who bring their true nature to life in the most engaging way. The banter in this novel is fantastic! And holy hotness- the steam is insane! In the most amazing way. Tilly and Loch are full ignition from first glance. But the emotional depth Maxwell explores only heightens the reader’s appreciation for the struggles they face individually and together.

Sticking to what she knows and does best, the theme and foundation of found family runs deep and strong in WoAH. Readers of her Westbrooks series will love the cameos and mentions of their favorite characters, and while there are tie-ins, this book truly is a standalone novel. If this is your first Maxwell read, you will want to go and grab everything she’s written once you finish so you can dig into those cameo characters one by one as well.

While there is more of a rom-com theme and feel to this book, WoAH does not skimp on the profound concepts of finding out who you really are, where you really belong, and how the way people see you affects and impacts what you do. There is something about being seen for who you really can be that resonates so deeply in most romance reader’s minds. That idea of being your true self around certain people, allowing yourself to really let go and trust, is an element Maxwell incorporates into so many of her stories. And she definitely brought that to life with Tilly and Lochlan. There is so much going on that it’s hard to say it’s just a simple love story. There’s a wonderful grumpy/ sunshine trope established, but it’s so much more than that. It’s acceptance, and compromise, and recovery, and retribution all without losing who you really are.

Without giving too much away, cancel your plans for the day, send your family on a long excursion, grab a tall glass of your favorite cold beverage and a bag of skittles, and find a very comfy place to settle. Because once you dive into Without A Hitch, you are not going to want to stop reading until the very. Last. Word.

WOAH!!! Avery Maxwell has done it again. Her latest book, Without A Hitch, introduces new characters with a mingle of the Westbrook- found- family. Tilly, Hadley, Delaney and Eli (Eliza) are roommates and best friends. The friendships in all of Maxwell's books are genuine and true. It is one of my favorite parts of her characters. The nosey neighbor, Mabel is almost as much fun as GG from the Westbrook series. If you haven't read the other series, this is a standalone book with cameos from the Westbrook clan. ( I highly recommend the entire backlist).
Tilly is sunshine to Lochlan's darkness. You could say they are exact opposites, and in some ways they are. It is truly magical the way Maxwell weaves a spell on the reader to bring the lovers together.
At the heart of the story are two people with pasts that shape their views on love and more importantly marriage. Tilly grew up with parents who neglected her and her sisters. She dreams of the big wedding and the happily ever after. Lochlan was burned by a manipulative ex-wife and has built a wall around his heart. This is not just a billionaire and a sunshine heroine. It is not just a fake relationship story. This is a story filled with humor, heart and healing. Avery Maxwell's writing gets more and more incredible with each book she writes.

Tilly Camden is a bubbly professional bridesmaid babysitter and loves love. Lochlan Blaine hates love & weddings..well until he meets that one “bridesmaid” that may change his tune. This is a cute, feel good romcom. I really liked the connection Tilly & Lachlan built together. Relax and enjoy this fun weekend read with a grumpy billionaire and his feisty heroine. I couldn’t wait for this release. Avery has been teasing this story for weeks!!! I thought it was a Novella…I was seriously wrong. I was up until 4 A.M. reading this book because I couldn’t put it down. I am absolutely in love with Lochlan and Tilly. I also loathe the bad guys in this. I wanted to stab my book, Boo Boo’s. I really did. The level of fraud reminds me of something certain family members I have would do (oops did I just write that? Oh well, moving on). This book is a must read summer read. I love all angles of this story and the persistent Lochlan is HOT.

Lochlan is rich and needs for nothing, however he is a hard worker just like his friend Colton Westbrook. He is also good looking but also extremely closed off. He loved once and was devastated at the level of deceit that his first wife committed. He only has one night stands when needed otherwise he is only close with his parents and his sister. The domino effect has taken place in Lochlan’s life and for that reason he no longer believes in love and wants nothing to do with it. He functions on revenge and he wants to get his in regards with his first wife.

Tilly is a hopeless romantic even though no one ever sees her. Whenever her and her sisters and friends go out the guys never notice tilly and she is always left out. Tilly is also a dreamer and she LOVES weddings and wants to become an event coordinator. Tilly wants to do this on her own with no help from her brother-in-law or her boss which are both Westbrooks. How she gets into it is both unconventional and funny. It is in this unconventional way she meets the one and only Lochlan.

This story was such a page turner for me. Avery whipped her magic up in this book and gave us all the feels including the anger towards the first wife. And Boo Boo’s… She will get hers too. All this wrapped up in a Happily Ever After.

This book I think speaks to the heart of what most romance readers seek often in everyday interactions. The ability to just be oneself. To be true to who we are and be accepted.
In many ways Tilly and Lochlan are both on this journey. Looking for those people who see who they truly are.
Of course in good rom-com fashion they have to be able to get out of their own way and Avery Maxwell made sure they did plenty of tripping over their own feet and each other's along the way.
They had help though and gee did they need it. But in the end will it be enough.
This book is so good, whether it's your first book or you're just waiting for another Westbrook. Don't miss out, grab your copy today.

Omg, this was soooo good!!!! This was my first read from this author but it definitely will not be my last. I just fell in love with this entire world from the very beginning! Plus who doesn't love the grumpy/sunshine trope? And with the extra hot sexy scenes and a grumpy "I won't fall in love" hero actually fall so hard so fast *chefs kiss* that's my kind of porn, baby.

This author is totally going on my must read list!

Tilly can't resist helping others when she comes to the rescue of Jenna, she's given an opportunity to use her skills.
Lochlan isn't one for weddings but this one is about to get interesting when he locks eyes with the bridesmaid.
Not revealing their true identities is definitely risky but one night is all they set out for.
This book had me hooked from page one I seriously couldn't put it down. The author draws you in with characters whom you just  form a connection with.
Brilliant, loved it.

This story is everything. It is sweet, romantic, heartbreaking, steamy, swoony, funny, and I could go on and on and on. I love the Westbrooks and their chaos, and while technically Lochlan and Tilly aren’t Westbrooks, they are still in the chaos. I think this may be my most favorite book in the series. Not to mention it’s hotter than Texas in August.

The ultimate grumpy meets sunshine story that will touch your heart, but also have you laughing out loud, especially when you meet Mabel!!!

Avery Maxwell turns up the heat in this stand-alone featuring Lochlan and Tilly!!! The sparks fly between these two and I absolutely loved every single minute of their journey!

Lochlan and Tilly each have past hurts that have helped to shape them into who they are today. Lochlan has closed himself off from love, while Tilly dreams of her very own happily ever after. Can they heal each other’s heart or will fear guide their future?

Brilliant and beautiful story filled with so many epic scenes that will stay with you long after you reach the end. Magnificent job Avery Maxwell!!! I most definitely recommend this book!

As seen on my blog (Jessie's Reading Corner):
DISCLAIMER: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Without a Hitch by Avery Maxwell is a book that I didn’t even know I needed in my life! Lochlan Blaine, Colton’s friend from One Little Kiss, has ruined me for all other book boyfriends! Seriously, the things that man says and does, to Tilly, will put all other book boyfriends to shame! *fans self*

Speaking of One Little Kiss, we did see parts of Lochlan and Tilly’s story play out in that book, but from Colton’s perspective! This is what I love about Avery’s books/writing that I don’t see that often: some of the events in her stories happen alongside each other! So while you’re reading about one couple’s journey to love, you see glimpses of another couple’s journey! Then in a future book, she flips the script; she’ll write about the second couple while giving you glimpses of the previous couple! I just love those little teases!

Back to WoaH, this story was amazing! It was literally one of the hottest books I have ever read! (You’ll need a fan, or a cold shower, after you read some of these scenes!) You may also need tissues as Avery also tugged at my heartstrings in this book. Lochlan’s been burned by love before and, while he and Tilly started out as one-night stand, these two connected on an emotional level from the very beginning. Lochlan was in a constant internal battle between his head and heart, and no matter how hard they both tried, they couldn’t deny their growing feelings for one another.

I definitely think everyone who likes steamy romances, fake relationship tropes, will love this book. While the Westbrooks do show up in this book, you do not need to read any of that series, if you haven’t already, to understand this book. I do love that series, so I will recommend that you read it too, just because everything Avery’s written so far has been amazing, and I love the Westbrooks!

I really enjoyed getting to meet new characters, and reunite with old, and I’m definitely looking forward to whatever Avery writes next, because I know it will be good, hot and leave me wanting more!

Make sure to pre-order this book now, or mark it on your calendars to buy or read in KU! Release day is July 27!

Thank you Avery, Rhon and TWSS for the advance copy!

This is a tough review for me to write because I was looking forward to reading this book and really wanted to like it, but unfortunately, it ended up being a bad match for me. I think the biggest problem is that while it was promoted as a standalone, it was actually a spinoff of the author's earlier series involving the Westbrook family. I haven't yet read those books (or any of the author's previous works), which made it very difficult to keep track of the many secondary characters and their relationships. Readers already familiar with those books will probably have an easier time and even enjoy the various cameo appearances, but for me, it was a struggle.

I also had a tough time connecting with either of the book's main characters, Tilly Camden and Lochlan Bryer-Blaine. About a third of the way through the book, Lochlan's assistant described him as being a "cinnamon roll," but up to that point I hadn't seen any evidence of that for myself. I never did warm up to Lochlan, which was a shame because I usually love grumpy heroes. He consistently came across as a bitter jerk to me, and aside from their physical attraction, I couldn't figure out what Tilly saw in him. As for Tilly, I found myself growing annoyed with her as the story progressed too. Her obsession with getting married was very over the top, and the fact that she basically gave him an ultimatum after a two-night stand was ridiculous. Whatever happened to dating and getting to know each other before deciding whether or not to spend the rest of your life together?

There were a number of plot inconsistencies that bothered me as well. For example, if Lochlan's friends had evidence that his ex-wife Christine and former stepfather Paul were con artists, why did they wait until he was lying in a hospital bed at the end of the book to share this information with the FBI and have them arrested? Why not share this information sooner, so that Lochlan wouldn't have had to come up with his absurd revenge scheme?

Bottom line, while this book may not have been a good match for me, I think it's likely to appeal to fans of alpha heroes and steamy contemporary romance in the vein of Tessa Bailey. I'd give the author another chance in the future.

4 stars. This was my first book from Avery Maxwell and I definitely enjoyed it. The grump/ sunshine trope is a favorite of mine, and this features that trope wonderfully. Tilly and Lachlan were lovable characters and there were tons of really funny moments in this. Yes, it was a bit predictable and parts of the ending were a bit far fetched. I also felt this was a smidge too long. But overall, I had a lot of fun while reading this. Also, the cast of secondary characters was a hoot! I died every time Tilly was referred to as Titty, and even more so when Lachlan called his sweatpants baby trackies. Is that an English thing? Who cares, it was hysterical.

One caveat, I def felt like many of the secondary characters were part of the author’s universe and were thus introduced in other books. Because of that, it sometimes felt as though the reader should have already been familiar with them, without everything about them fully described. That’s ok. They were secondary characters and didn’t impact my reading. But fans of Maxwell’s will probably really enjoy those cameos. And this can absolutely be read as a standalone. I would certainly be up for reading more if this was made into a series and featured other couples.

Oh my gosh. Everytime I think I love Avery’s last book more. She writes a new one and it’s better. How do you take a soul that has been darken so much. Can’t love anyone but his family. Then comes Tully who soul is peaceful and beautiful. Their attraction is so powerful. She must help him to save her own heart. Love this book.. it has all the feels too.
