The exercises and tips contained in this book will help teachers orient students toward being internalized in their discipline rather than depending upon external controls--resulting in easier classroom management and more quality teaching time. Jim and Charles Fay will teach you how to effectively manage your classroom through shared control, choices within limits and the importance of relationships. For teachers in grades K-12.
This book is phenomenal. I give this book to every new educator I meet with my testimonial. I am in my third year of teaching. I read this book every year and I can tell you, it really helps. Reading this not only gives me solutions that work, it is also meditative and relaxing, and the best way to calm down during prep/conference. If you are an educator, you must read this book! I also like the other books by this author, Dr. Charles Fay.
Many educators are familiar with the best practices of classroom management and have incorporated similar strategies into their own toolkit. As such, a lot of this information isn't "new" but is written from a different vantage point so that you can step back and reframe some tools that you maybe already use in your classroom. Classroom Management is not a one size fits all approach, nor should it be, as the authors acknowledge. There are a lot of really good things in here that can be tweaked to work for you and your learners. It's certainly worth checking out.
Jim and Charles Fay share their practical tips and wisdom for dealing with difficult students. Highly readable, though there were some parts (the parent chapter in particular) that could have been pared down a bit. They aren't saying anything I haven't already heard or didn't already know, but they explain the why behind the what and show how all the things I know and have heard are connected, and that is what I really appreciated. I've already applied their Love and Logic approach to a situation with one of my kids, and though I haven't seen any immediate results, I know that I personally feel like a better parent having used it...and isn't that the goal? As parents, teachers, people? Worth the read if you're looking for an approach that "puts it all together" for you.
Love and Logic is a method of working with children and taking control over the class. The underlying premise is that ‘No child is bad’. The teacher in me related to the book and I endorse the view that a teacher should use Maslow’s theory before implementing Bloom’s taxonomy. My' take home' from the book are these three mantras: Use enforceable limits, Provide choices within limits, Consequences to be dealt with Empathy. Recommend to every teacher.
an education textbook with some definitive wisdom and insight, but at some points I also wondered whether some of the tactics were a bit emotionally manipulative or if they could be delivered in a non-sarcastic manner (some things just work differently on paper than in an actual classroom context)
Love and logic is what my college education professor talked about when he combined the words kind and firmly- "kirmly". This book is useful for families and teachers in a variety of school settings and stages.
Very easy to read and provided lots of tangible examples of strategies to use in the classroom that I haven’t heard before. Excited to see how this can help better serve my students and myself this school year!
I wished I had read this when I started teaching 23 years ago. Building relationships with your students by leading with love and empathy will be a game changer.
Great book for teachers or soon to be teachers to read! It was insightful and helpful. Things that can be easily applied in the classroom. Read as a required book over one of my Masters courses.
I took my time reading this book. Super practical and helpful for classroom management. I’m looking forward to continuing to re-read it and discover more helpful info!
