Heartbreak Houseshare

Rate this book
When moving on means moving out…

Surely there should be a rule book to guide you through the tumultuous twenties, or a ‘to do list’ at the very least?

Fresh out of university in Manchester and struggling to climb the career ladder in London, Flick’s devastated when her boyfriend dumps her with no warning and leaves her looking for a new place to live.

Being forced into a houseshare with three complete strangers isn’t exactly how Flick saw things going. But the residents of Carlisle Avenue are quickly on hand to help her navigate the ups and downs of the life she’s currently winging.

With their help, along with her big sister, Flick manages to focus her energy on ticking off items that she’s added to her ‘twenties list’ – the perfect bucket list for any twenty-something reclaiming their life post-break up.

And all is going well, that is until her boss catches wind of it and asks her to create a new magazine column documenting her progress. Enter Teddy, a sweet guy who becomes Flick’s friend after a tennis meet-cute. As the column finds its feet Flick’s in way over her head, somehow managing to fake-date Teddy to please her boss and her readers.

But the further Flick gets into twenties life, the more she realizes: maybe she’s not the only one following the ‘fake it ‘til you make it’ mantra.

4.5 stars from me.

This was honestly such a pleasure to read. Wholesome and fun whilst still having depth. A realistic perspective of what it's like to be in your twenties & realising that you don't know what the heck you're doing (but neither does anyone else).

This book was just a delight. A feel-good story about friendship, life & love. It did exactly what it needed to do. The characters felt real to me and I felt like I was a part of Charlisle House.

Don't go into this book expecting crazy drama or fast-paced action. It's not necessarily an earth shattering romance that will rip your heart out, but in my opinion, that's not what it was trying to be. If you just want a wholesome story about a girl in her twenties figuring stuff out (with a great romance) - this one's for you.

I will say, I found this book in the romance section of my bookstore and whilst it obviously has a romance element to it, I wouldn't say that the romance is the main focus. It's more of a sub-plot in my opinion (a great romance sub-plot though).

I don't usually write full reviews like this on Goodreads, but I was shocked when I saw this book only had 45 reviews, so I decided I needed to add my own. This book deserves so much more hype & I hope that many more twenty-somethings will pick this up and have the same joyful reading experience that I did. I was genuinely sad to finish this story and say goodbye to Flick & her found family.

...I also just love Teddy, that man is so thoughtful 🥹

I liked this, but sadly I didn't LOVE it. It was a very cute story, and the meet-cute fake-dating tropes were well done. But sadly I couldn't respect someone having a crisis in their 20s and having to re-assess their whole life at the ripe old age of 22... 22. If anything it made me think like my life was even less put-together. Overall I would recommend for a feel-good, easy read.

OMG LOVED!! This is the perfect book for me right now! It allowed me to escape exactly when I needed to. I loved the WHOLE plot, from the fake-dating to the friendships at the house share. I can't really fault it <3

Everyone going through their twenties needs to read this book. I love its representation of female friendship, it frequently made me think of how grateful I am for my female friendships. It’s also a nice reminder that no one has their life completely together and feeling like you’re out of control is okay, it’s all part of the fun. Definitely the kind of read that feels like a big warm hug. Also Teddy’s a sweetie.

As someone in their twenties and who constantly feels like I’m behind on some non-existent timeline, I needed this book! Firstly, I’m writing my own twenties list soon because I love that concept. Secondly, this house-share made me miss my most recent one💗 Lastly, read this book.

MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5 but closer to 5)

look the low rating is my fault for not reading the full blurb but god did i want a book about female friendship, navigating your 20s, and getting over a breakup where a huge focus wasn’t another MAN like ughhhhhhh the potential was so there but instead .. just another fake dating romance trope

this was such a lovely, wholesome & fun book to read!
i would definitely recommend this book to anyone in their 20s that is struggling to navigate life, friendships & relationships! it was so heartwarming to watch flick find her place with the right people, platonically & romantically! 🥹

the found family/friendships in this book were my favourite part. this book shows that there are people out there that will accept you for exactly who you are, you just have to be patient & trust that you’ll find them at the right time🩵

this book just had such a realistic & relatable perspective on life & how it feels to follow society’s rules and standards. it was a perfect feel-good story that sheds light on friendships & love in the most profound way 🫶🏽

bookclub book of the month of april💌

i loooved this book!! i feel like every girl in their teens/20s/30s needs to read this🥹

if you’re ever doubting yourself, your life, where you’re going and what you’re doing then pick this book up!!

sooo cosy and heart warming🥹 this book follows Flick who’s on her journey of re-discovering herself after going through a tough breakup. i feel like we can all relate to Flick in some way or another and the journey that each of the characters in this book went on was sooo wholesome

i had such a good time reading this!!

my only qualm is that i wish there wasn’t a romance in it as i preferred the self-discovery / friendship aspect of the book💘💘💘

(me he cabreado escribiendo esto y he decidido bajarle de 3 a 2 estrellas)

I loved this!!

Do I think the reason I loved it so much is because I felt like this was a book about me and my journey moving to uni- absolutely!!

I feel like this book perfectly captures friendship in your 20s.

What a lovely book this was! 😍 This kind of book about women in their twenties figuring out their lives, building friendships and experimenting with dating is exactly the kind of book I love, and is the type of genre that helped to establish my love of reading as an adult, and it did not disappoint!

Flick is 22, not long out of university, living in London away from her home of Liverpool, and she is heartbroken. After living with her boyfriend for the last 18 months, she has been dumped out of the blue, and is having to move into a houseshare with three strangers so that she can afford to carry on living in London. Fortunately for Flick, there’s something very special about the Carlisle Avenue girls, and she forms the best of friendships with her new housemates, Maia, Kitty and Stacey. Every girl who turns up to the heartbreak houseshare broken is showered with the kind of love and friendship that everybody needs in their lives.

Flick works for Influence magazine, and when her boss Cecelia catches wind of Flick’s ‘twenties list’ - a list of all the things she wants to experience in her twenties - Flick ends up writing a column for the magazine about her life in London. Which leads to her fake dating colleague Teddy. Of course, we know that fake dating never stays fake for long 🙊 Flick and Teddy aka Fleddy are a great pairing and I loved their banter!!

This was a really heartwarming story with friendship at the very heart. It showcases the highs and lows of life in your twenties so aptly, with all of the humour and heartache that comes with it. This book focused on strong women supporting other women and how much we can achieve when we do this. I feel inspired to write my own list now (only 3 and a bit years of my twenties left 😱)! I’d highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who feels like their life isn’t always panning out the way they thought it would.

I’ve been really bad with reading recently, as I feel like I have been busier than usual despite my life not changing much in the last month.

However Emily Merrill deserves as award for this book.

I have never read something (as a 22 year old grad) so validating about not knowing where I’m going in life and not having any idea what, breakfast tomorrow morning looks like let alone the next five years.

This book, had me crying at some points and having to take a step away from it because of how relatable it was as a graduate British uni student, whose living with her friends in what could be considered a house share. I’ve gained so many life experiences living with the people I’m closest too in life and what I know are my forever friends. And seeing Flick also go through this and having Maia, Stacey and Kitty all be there for her when she needed them was amazing.

There were so many people in this book that all had little things about them that I could relate to. Suze, Flick, Stacey, Maia and Teddy. Everyone in this book has their own unique plot and the fact that the romance isn’t the main point of the book added to the fact that this turned out to be a 5 star read, as it felt like a genuine account of what it’s like to be in your 20’s.

It has made me decide I want to create my own twenties list, as this book was also incredibly validating that everyone has different paths and that not everyone’s lists would be the same. So i know that my twenties list wouldn’t be as out there as Flicks is despite how she says hers is pretty introverted but one for sure is that I want to finish one of the books of writing!

For anyone that is worried about time and how they feel like it’s slipping away from them I strongly recommend this book as it will really comfort you in a way that I cannot explain in a review you just have to go and read it yourself.

2.75ish stars, i hate to say it.
i picked this book up because i loved the sentiment- female friendship, growing up in ur twenties, and some friends to lovers. however. it’s taken me 3 months to finish.

i found it hard to connect to the story. the storytelling relies almost exclusively on telling, not showing. the side characters are all caricatures and as a result their friendships mostly felt flat. Flick as a character was hard to connect with, and since she was the narrator i kept getting bored and putting the book down.

as well, this book could’ve used some better editing. it had multiple contradictions- for example, in one sentence a character is drinking matcha, the next, a coffee. the main character kills a spider on one page, but then says they’re afraid of a moth in their bedroom a few pages later. and that’s just to name a couple. it’s hard to characterize someone when things change from sentence to sentence. also, a lot of the speech is stilted and unnatural.

also- i think im tired of the fake dating trope and should stop reading it for awhile.

overall, i could see the potential for this story, but it unfortunately missed the mark for me. it had a few good nuggets, but the juvenile writing made it hard to enjoy overall.

This was SO much fun to read. Loved it from start to finish, such a gorgeous story and you know when you feel a bit down or just not really sure how you feel, this book made me feel so much better.

A nice bit of romance in the book but it’s about so much more. It’s about moving on and making the most of your life, setting yourself some challenges and about friendship.

I feel like I need these people in my life as friends because they were just incredible women. All with different personalities, a little bit of sarcasm and lots of humour. It really did sound like a great houseshare to be part of.

It was nice to see locations mentioned in the book which aren’t that far away from me, Liverpool and Manchester. Which are both great places to visit.

Teddy was an absolute dream of a character. He was just charming and had that perfect personality. I was really invested in how his character slotted in the story.

If you’re looking for a nice light read that is laugh out loud funny, gives the perfect escapism.. then this is the book to read!

Absolutely loved it 🥰💜

This book was so comforting to read, you know when you watch re-runs of your favourite shows on repeat?? It was like that sorta comfort 🩷

I loved that she spoke about being a northerner living in the south as that’s what I experienced for 3 years of my life being at uni!!!

It really made me think about how sometimes I get upset because I compare myself to other people my age and feel like I haven’t got it ‘right’ BUT reading this made me open my eyes and realise that no one actually knows what they’re doing.

When you see people romanticise their life on social media, you don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors too.

If you’re in your 20’s and feel like you don’t really know what you’re doing, read this!!! You’re not alone ❤️

Absolutely love this book! Never had heard of it until I saw Rachel Catherine do a review of it on YouTube. This book for me was like ‘happy place’ by Emily Henry meets ‘Evelyn Hugo’ by TJR a little bit. Only interms of the Magazine aspect.
The romance is definitely not a huge plot of the book but it made me love it so much more that it wasn’t all about that. It really was all about flick navigating her 20’s. I love the friendships in this book and the whole list she makes about getting over her ex. But there was so much depth and meaning to so many things. I felt like I got so much out of this book and could really connect to the characters. I can’t believe this book doesn’t have that much hype about it. Highly recommend! I’m keen to read more books by Emily Merrill ☺️

This book made me feel excited to live, make new memories, meet new friends and just enjoy my 20s to the fullest!
It was a breath of fresh air.
I love the friendships of this book which showcased the power of ‘girls supporting girls’ and how the right people will help you grow and be the best and happiest version of yourself.
It reminded me of the quote in Everything I know about love, “Nearly everything I know about love I’ve learned from my long term friendships with women”.
This book is so underrated and it deserves so much more recognition!
Please read it!!!

Now I want to buy a camera capturing all my best memories just like in this book!!!

Huge thanks to Libro.fm for an ALC in exchange for an honest review!

I loved the charm of this one and all of the characters we met along the way.

This story is more about Flick's relationship with her new roommates and her sister, than it is about her actual romance storyline - though that does dip in more than I expected it, too - and finding those new friendships in your early 20's is HUGE and Merrill does a great job showing the importance and impact of that.

Flick was a bit dramatic at times, but this was overall a very fun, low stakes contemporary fiction whose Britishness was amped up even more by the audio narrator!

Foi muito divertido e Fleddy for the win!😆🤍
