Veronica Darkwater wants to get off her podunk little planet and into space. She yearns for grand adventures and excitement. She doesn't yet realize the bounty she just took in is going to lead to all of these things, and much more than she bargained for.
Nova Phase is a new digital comic by Slave Labor Graphics with the first issue free on Comixology. It is a charming book, with its art done in the style of the old 16-bit games I used to play on my old SNES. It certainly hit a few nostalgia buttons on me that's for sure.
It is both manga inspired, in both story and art. The influence is quite obvious in the art with those saucer sized eyes on the main heroine on the cover. It also has a female lead, which is quite common in manga and anime.
It draws on Star Wars too as Veronica Darkwater has a little of both Luke and Han in her. She's a bounty hunter by trade, a career she choose she could accumulate enough credits to leave her home planet for the stars.
If you're into sci-fi in the way of Whedon or Lucas, this could be the series for you. There is no harm in trying; the first issue is free on Comixology for you to try.
Veronica Darkwater is a decent character-I do want to read more of her story. But the 8 bit style, while commendable for its originality, is going to be no good long term. It's too clunky visually to tell any kind if multilayered story.
