Heaven's Cove #4

The Key to the Last House Before the Sea

Rate this book
Tears trickling down her cheeks, she recognises her grandmother’s writing scrawled across the manila envelope. Inside is an engraved key that sits heavy in her hand. Will the tumbledown cottage be the start of a new life – or will it tear her life apart?

With her back to the sparkling sea, single mum Nessa stands in the doorway of the stone cottage her grandmother left behind. If she can just fix up the crumbling walls and make the empty hearth cosy again, it will be the perfect home for her little daughter Lily – and their only option if they want to stay in the village of Heaven’s Cove. But a rap on the door soon shatters her plans…

Although Gabriel Gantwich has a smile on his handsome face, the papers he’s clutching say his father’s company owns the house. They plan to knock it down, destroying Nessa’s last link to her family history – and Lily’s last hope for a home in Heaven’s Cove.

Reeling, Nessa is furious that an outsider could take away her child’s future. She has just thirty days to renovate the cottage – and prove it’s hers. As she and Gabriel clash over every detail, Nessa barely notices that even though they argue, their talks are fuelled by the same passion. And beneath his tough exterior, Gabriel appreciates the beauty of the sunset bathing the clifftop cottage in soft pink light as much as she does…

But one stormy night, Nessa gets a desperate phone call about Lily. Forced to choose between her family’s past and her daughter’s future, will she end up losing everything? Or will Gabriel finally realise what truly matters, and help Nessa make this beautiful place a home?

This book can be enjoyed as a standalone.

An absolutely stunning, heartbreaking and uplifting read that will sweep you away to the wild Devon coast. Perfect for anyone who loves Trisha Ashley, Debbie Macomber and Jean Grainger.

This book can be enjoyed as a standalone.

One Liner: A sweet continuation to the series

Nessa Paulson is down on her luck big time. She has nowhere to go, and the temporary stay at Rosie’s Driftwood is not an ideal solution. Grieving the loss of her grandmother, Nessa has to deal with the lack of a job, home, and just about everything. How on earth can she take care of her five-year-old girl, Lily? An unexpected discovery seems like the only solution, no matter how farfetched or difficult.

Gabriel Gantwich is in Heaven’s Cover on serious business. He has to complete the formalities for his father’s company to clear the land and start building apartments/ houses on Surreal Cove. It shouldn’t even be a problem, but it turns out to be one when Nessa is standing in his way. Her only chance at having a home collides with Gabriel’s business.

It doesn’t help that Valerie, Nessa’s ex-MIL is a boon and bane of her life. What does one say to a woman who refuses to acknowledge the truth?

What happens to Surreal Cove and the cottage? Can Nessa hope for a better future? Can Gabriel understand his weariness with life and decide what he wants the most?

The story comes from the limited-third person POV of Nessa, Gabriel, and Valerie.

My Observations:

I’ve been following the series from book one and love the setting. Though this book doesn’t many recurring characters, it is still a part of Heaven’s Cove. In fact, I see the stories getting better as the series progresses.

The characters are well-etched. Nessa, Gabriel, and Valerie have vital roles. Each of them has a steady character arc. I love the idea of giving Valerie her own POV. It makes the story much more impactful.

Family dynamics and relationships are the major themes of the book. Nessa and Gabriel (in fact, even Valerie) are dealing with family issues in different ways. How they react and respond to the developments affects them and others.

I miss the friendly and nosy characters from Heaven’s Cove. The previous characters do make an appearance, but somehow, it doesn’t feel enough.

I love happy endings, so this is a treat to read. The history of Surreal Cove is used well, though the prologue seems wasted in the overall storyline.

Lily is a sweetheart and a typical five-year-old. I wish she had a wee bit more space in the book. Cute kids are a treat to read about.

To sum up, The Key to the Last House Before the Sea is a heartwarming story about determination, family, relationships, and doing what makes one happy.

Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'The Key To The Last House Before The Sea' by Liz Eeles .

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Liz Eeles, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Publication date 19th August 2022.

This is the fourth book I have read by this author and it is the fourth book in the 'Heaven's Cove' series but can be read as a standalone. I have previously read the first book in this series 'Secrets At The Last House Before The Sea', the second book in this series 'A Letter To The Last House Before The Sea' and the third book in this series 'The Girl At The Last House Before The Sea' which I also would highly recommend.

I was originally drawn to this book by its  eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'Perfect for anyone who loves Trisha Ashley, Debbie Macomber and Jean Grainger'. I am a huge fan of Debbie Macomber so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I am also a fan of Liz and if this is half as good as 'Secrets At The Last House Before The Sea', 'A Letter To The Last House On Before The Sea' and 'The Girl At The Last House Before Sea' it is sure to be a great read. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture  that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 40 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is based in Devon, UK 🇬🇧. The bonus for me of books that are partly or fully based in the UK is that I live in the UK and have sometimes visited places mentioned in the book which makes it easier to picture. I have actually visited Devon on several occasions so am looking forward to see if I recognise anywhere.

This book is written in third person perspective with the main protagonists being Nessa, Valerie and Gabriel. The benefits of third person perspective are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything.

Love,  love,  LOVE this stunning series!! Well done Liz you have done it yet again!!! Another absolutely stunningly written book whose vivid descriptions completely arrested my attention. I could feel the sand in my toes and the wind in my hair. The cover and synopsis suited the storyline perfectly.

I absolutely LOVE the Heaven's Cove series and Heavens Cove has become an absolutely stunning escape for me.  I always look forward to seeing Liz's next book come out as I know it's time to mentally pack my suitcase and set off for a stunning holisay surrounded by an absolutely fantastic community!! This book is a perfect summer read filled with mystery, romance, deceit, love, family, secrets and is perfect for anyone looking for an escape. I was absolutely hooked from page one until 2.30am in the morning when I finished having not being able to put it down. The overall atmosphere worked perfectly with the storyline and I felt myself surrounded by the sea and sounds of Devon and most definitely wanting to go back. The plot was very realistic making it all very easy to picture. It's hard to say too much about the storyline that's not in the description and that won't give too much away.  It is such an easy smooth read though that you can read curled up in front of a fire or laying on a sunbed at the beach. I am so glad the way it all turned out and for me it ended perfectly. I am also pleased to say that the ending wasn't what I was expecting which is a lovely bonus as I enjoy being surprised so well done again Liz!! An absolutely stunning book that would make an absolutely gorgeous movie!!!

Although this is the fourth book in the series I had would have had absolutely no problems reading it without the others. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.

An absolutely stunning page turner that will completely captivate your heart and mind from beginning to end.

I was completely invested in Nessa, Valerie and Gabriel's characters and I enjoyed seeing what was going on from each of their very different perspectives. I also absolutely loved meeting some of the characters from Haven Cove. These characters have become like friends to me through the four gorgeous books in this series and I always love "meeting" them again and seeing what they have been getting up to. The characters are all vivid, strong and realistic and I loved the community surrounding the area. The author captured a typical village lifestyle perfectly. I loved getting to know Nessa, Valerie and Gabriel along with meeting Liam, Rose and several of the other lovely characters again.  It was great watching how all the characters developed and bonded throughout the book and I think some of them will stay with me for a long time. It's always great seeing strong female leads in books and Nessa was definitely memorable!! I did miss Belinda in this book although she was mentioned, strange as I couldn't stand her when I met her but she has definitely grown on me through this series so hopefully she will be in the next gorgeous adventure at Heavens Cove.  If not then it will stay be an amazing read as this has been with May amazing characters I will definitely miss until the next success!!

Congratulations Liz on yet another addictive, stunningly beautiful book. This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors and I cannot wait to read the next book in this stunning series as well as checking out your other books.  Here I'd to this and your next guaranteed success!!  🥂

Overall a heart warming, stunning charming page turning and addictive novel in a gorgeous series. Another must read from Liz!!

Genres covered in this book include Romantic Cometic, Contemporary Romance, Womens Fiction,  Contemporary Fiction and Romance amongst others.

I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of Trisha Ashley, Debbie Macomber, Jean Grainger, Summer and beach reads and anyone looking for a relaxing heart warming read.

338 pages.

This book is just £1.99 to purchase on kindle or free on kindle unlimited (at time of review) via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!

Rated 5 /5 (I LOVED it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

I really enjoyed returning to Heaven's Cove in Devon. Single mum Nessa grew up in Heaven’s Cove, living the last year with her grandmother. Her grandmother recently died and the landlord is selling the cottage. Not only is she without a home, but she lost her job when the store she worked at was closed when the owner retired and moved away. Nessa is now living at Driftwood House, a guesthouse run by her friend Rosie, but she knows she can't stay there. When her grandmother's landlord gives her a box of her grandmother's belongings that had been left in the cottage, Nessa finds a couple of things that could change her life. He family had lived in a cottage on Sorrel Cove and although it is now a Ghost Village, one cottage is still standing. In the box is a key and lease agreement for that cottage. If she can live there for 30 days and nights, she will have the right to live there for many more years. She finds out that a developer has purchased the land and plans on leveling it and building luxury apartment buildings. Nessa can't let them destroy the ghost village, so moves forward to renovate the cottage and make a home for herself and her five year old daughter Lily. Can she save the cottage? Will her and Lily find a place to call home?

I really enjoyed this story. Nessa is a mama bear. She will do whatever she needs to do to support her daughter, even if it means giving up something that is dear to her. The development company, sends the son of the owner, Gabriel, to check out the area, and he ends up staying at Driftwood House. Of course I figured out how this would all end, but what a story getting there. Lily is a delight and she is able to get Gabriel to loosen up and begin to question what is important in his life. Nessa seems to run into problems everywhere she turns from a deadbeat ex-husband, an ex-mother-in-law, Valerie, who dislikes Nessa and will do anything for Lily, but nothing for Nessa. A development company that wants to destroy her memories and a beautiful area where she finds peace and even her own feelings. Gabriel is conflicted. He dislikes his life in London, all her does is work, but he wants to be loyal to his father, so is caught between a rock and a hard place. The community is the one thing that supports Nessa, her friends and acquaintances are there for her, even when she doubts herself. The setting is wonderfully describes, beautiful and peaceful at times, spooky and atmospheric at others. If there really was a ghost village and Heaven's Cove, it would be on my bucket list of places to visit. Themes of family expectations, blind loyalty, grief, single parent issues, developers and their destruction and community all play a part in this story, and of course, there is a sweet romance. I hope Liz Eeles is not finished with Heaven's Cove and I would love to visit once again and see who else will get a HEA.

This is the first book I have read in the Heaven's Cove series and what a wonderful read it is too! Do not fear if you haven't read the others as they all read as standalones. The perfect escapism in a picturesque setting where the author draws you right in and you will lose all sense of time!

Nessa Paulson has had a tough go of things. She’s lost her parents and now with the loss of her beloved Gran, she also lost the home she and her daughter Lily were staying in. Lily’s father has never been reliable so finding somewhere she can afford on her own isn’t going to be easy. When she makes an unexpected discovery when going through her Gran’s things as she clears out the house, she finds there may be a way to stay in the house after all.
Gabriel Gantwitch is in Heaven’s Cove on business for his father. His father intends to clear out all the old houses and build all new condos that people can use on weekends and vacations to enjoy the seaside, which includes the house that Nessa intends to try to stay in. Can Nessa defeat bug business and keep her home on the seaside? Will Gabriel realize that he isn’t happy working for his father and admit his feelings for Nessa?
Although this is the fourth book the the series I didn’t have any trouble not having read the previous ones, though since I enjoyed it as much as I did, I do intend to go back and read them.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.

What a moving contemporary romance this proved to be,
With a single Mum struggling against fate, you'll see.
After the recent death of her Gran, things deteriorated so quick
She's lost her home and her job, all gone in a tick.

When a key and a message from her Gran are found
Nessa hopes the cottage it belongs to will be sound.
The home for her family for many years
But abandoned after a storm ended in tragedy and tears.

However, Gabriel is a visitor she's giving a guided tour
When she discovers he has secrets that'll affect her more.
Their antagonism was there right from the start
The latest news is sure to drive them further apart.

A story of families with members with different dreams,
Where nothing is as straight forward as it initially seems!
There's resilience, betrayal. and romance
But will they give it even a chance?

The surprise revelations toward the end
Ensure this is a story I highly recommend!
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review.

Returning to Heaven's Cove in Devon feels a bit like going back home now.
This is the fourth book in the series and, as well as the previous ones, can be read as a stand-alone, but the nice feeling of being back in this idyllic and picturesque setting is priceless.
Another beautiful instalment by Liz Eeles, I can't wait to read the next one!

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC.

An enchanting story of family, loss, and new beginnings.

I enjoyed the characters and the premise. The writing was a bit verbose, and the story was a tad too long; but, overall a comforting and warm story.

Nessa is a woman who knows that family comes first, no matter the sacrifices. She's hardworking and determined to make the best of her life for the sake of her daughter.

Gabriel is a man who has been pushed into his family's business in spite of feeling lost and alone in a world he doesn't feel he belongs in.

Initially, Nessa and Gabriel bring out the worst in each other, but, in time, realize that they're helping each other find what they're really looking for.

Special thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for sharing this digital ARC with me in exchange for my honest review.

This is book #4 in the Heaven’s Cove series. Whilst part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone book. I’ve read all the other books in the series, and they are all lovely and focussing on a different character from the little seaside village of Heaven’s Cove. In this book the attention turns to single mum, Nessa. I loved her character! She’s having such a rough time after her grandmother’s recent death. She’s lost her home that she shared with her grandmother, and Nessa finds herself and her little girl having to move into Driftwood House, the B&B her friend runs. When she finds a key amongst her grandmother’s belongings that fits into an old derelict cottage that her grandmother used to live in, Nessa wonders whether she can bring the cottage back to life as a home for her and her daughter.

It was truly lovely to be back in Heaven’s Cove. It’s such a beautiful sounding place, and just imagining standing up on the cliff’s edge by Driftwood House certainly revitalises me! We get to meet a handful of the village’s residents from previous books, but this story does focus mainly on Nessa and newcomer, Gabriel Gantwich. He is a funny one to work out though – always in a suit and tie, even on the sunniest of days – and he’s obviously come to the village for a reason. But his mean and moody exterior and handsome good looks certainly catches Nessa’s eye, and…who could blame her! Their storylines bump up and down throughout the book, one minute they get on and the next they don’t, but they held my interest right from the moment they set eyes on each other!

The book is a wonderful read! It has its light-hearted moments and some more tender or sadder times. The location sets the scene perfectly and you can picture yourself walking over the cliff tops or scrambling through the deserted Ghost Village. The characters are all likeable – even the ones I didn’t like initially redeemed themselves – and you can easily to relate to many of them. It’s definitely one of those books where it captures you so easily that time flies by while you’re reading it! I really enjoy my visits to this series and would happily recommend each and every book!

Nessa wants to find a safe home for her and her daughter and when she finds out that she has a right to live in a derelict family home she is desperate to meet the conditions attached to her tenancy.
I was totally drawn into the book imagining that I was there, willing her to make the house a happy home for her and her daughter
I loved the friendships, the begrudging respect she finds for the developers son and the sense of hope that everything will be fine.
I'm delighted to find that this is part of a series and will be keen to seek out the other books. This book read well as a standalone

What an incredibly powerful story of determination, love, transformation and overcoming the odds! Liz’s stories always have ample layers of depth to them and The Key to the Last House Before the Sea is no exception. Intricate thoughts always manage to rise to the surface like driftwood on the sea.

I have absolutely loved this entire series so jumped at the chance to read the newest ARC. In fact, any book by Liz will be a must-read as I have really enjoyed her heart-felt themes, complex characters and exceptional writing. The Heaven’s Cove series is phenomenal. Each book is a standalone so you can read them in any order. These may be classed as ‘feel good’ or ‘uplifting fiction’ but that does not mean they are not filled with complicated situations, especially since they are always about relationships and families—which we know means lots of colour, clashes and crises. Solutions are always found though, leaving the reader satisfied with an apt ending that is usually happy but why not? Life is full of enough dramas and so it is nice to see good things happen to devoted, determined individuals with good hearts and honest intentions like Nessa: a character I thoroughly admired.

Nessa is a single mom with a five year old daughter. She has been abandoned by her husband, a free spirit, and their child rarely sees her father. He is a weak person who shrugs off his responsibilities. His mother, Valerie, though, has difficulty seeing his flaws and blames Nessa for chasing him away. Valerie wants her son around more but for selfish reasons. Nessa, on the other hand devotes her life to trying to make her daughter’s life safe, comfortable and happy but her lack of funds and loss of job (no fault of her own) have presented challenges that seem insurmountable. Also, her grandmother, with whom she has lived, has recently died and this leaves her homeless (though she stays briefly with a friend) while she continues to find a way to get a roof over her and her daughter’s head. A key comes to her through a package left by her grandmother that may be the answer to her troubles but this task bears many challenges and road blocks. She must make difficult choices. Yet through these decisions, we see she is a selfless woman with a great love for her daughter. But there are those lurking nearby who try to take advantage of her circumstances.

One issue addressed in this novel is how difficult it can be to have no family support either because members have all died (as in Nessa’s case) or through selfish expectations imposed by others (as in Gabriel’s case).

The characters in The Key to the Last House Before the Sea truly carry a complexity with many facets to explore. Sometimes I like to look at character’s names. Nessa’s name means pure, holy; butterfly and I think it fits her well. Gabriel – we know means bearer of good news (as one heaven’s angels) and although he starts out being a bearer of bad news, he manages to find courage to become a better man. But I won’t give anything away except to say he is not as he appears and once he spends time with Nessa, she sets about in him a transformation. Her pureness of heart (honest love for her daughter) and positive attitude of going after her dreams rubs off on him. Does she help him become a better man or the man he really is, without all the trappings imposed on him by his father? For he is not just a business man but also a suppressed artist. Not only does Nessa affect him but also Heaven’s Cove does as well. The longer he is in this glorious setting, the more it begins to do its magic on his heart.

The story is told through three characters: Nessa, Gabriel and Valerie (the ex-mother-in-law). The dynamics of these three is quite interesting: the sparks of friction have a way of heating up and keeps the plot rolling. We hunger to see character growth in Gabriel and Valerie. Nessa, though, is more of a static character (like Anne of Green Gables). I would say she is not so much one who changes (little bits maybe) but she brings change in others by being who she is. Her good heart brings out the best in people or shows them up (as in the case of her ex-husband whose faults come through loud and clear through his own pitiful actions).

This novel caught my interest from the cover to the first page and held me in its grips to the very end. I loved everything about it! You can smell the salt, hear the gulls, see the light playing on the waves in this gorgeous setting of Heaven’s Cove which is like another character. The story of Ghost Village is powerful and transforming and will tug at your heart strings in an eternal way. It is easy to see why Nessa wants to hang on to the cottage with so much family history embedded in its past. And its connections to her grandmother have become entwined around her heart. Her fight and dealings to save it, left me cheering throughout. To believe in a special history so much, you will try everything to save it – that’s beautiful in my books! Progress is not always right or good and sometimes pieces of the past must be preserved to ensure the future is bright. I loved The Key to the Last House Before the Sea and highly recommend it. 5 Shimmering Stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for a copy to review.

The Key to the Last House Before the Sea is the fourth book in the Heaven’s Cove series by Liz Eeles. All the books can easily be read as standalone stories but as the series is so enjoyable you’ll really want to go back and read the previous books. Liz has that ability to make you feel at home in whatever setting she writes about and I am still desperately wishing that Heaven’s Cove was real. It’s a tight knit community where people find solace and comfort and where problems can be shared and worked through. The book opens with a brief but dramatic prologue set in 1946 as a violent storms approaches Sorrel Cove. Several people and houses are lost and the people that remain are deeply affected by what they witnessed and the after effects are felt for many years right up to the present day. Before long Sorrel Cove becomes a ghost town but in the present day this little village has not been forgotten and it may just be the saving grace for our main character Nessa.

Nessa is a single mum to her daughter Lily and right from the first time we meet her the reader can sense she has been through a lot and that the difficult times are still ongoing for her. So much went against her throughout the story and she is very down on herself at times but yet there is a resilience about her and a steely determination that once she sets her mind to something she will see it through to the bitter end no matter if the outcome could potentially not go her way. I loved that Nessa always had Lily and their future at the centre of everything she did. To me it seemed that that choices for what Nessa could do were very limited and if only her ex Jake could get his act together and start paying regular maintenance than Nessa wouldn’t be in such a tricky position. But that seemed unlikely as he barely acknowledged that Lily even existed. But fair play to Nessa she knew she needed to strike out on her own and take matters into her own hands and not rely on a man who was useless and shied away from his responsibilities. Nessa is a character who deserves nothing but admiration and respect and I found myself rooting for her from the get go.

As Nessa scatters her grandmother Rose’s ashes in the abandoned village which changed the fate of Nessa’s family forever she knows this is a turning point for her. She has no place to call home as the landlord is selling the house in which she lived with Ruth and now she has also lost her job as the shop she worked in is now closed and being sold. Nessa is at a very low point and has lost her way. Worry is not a strong enough word to convey the emotions that she is feeling and I felt desperately sorry for her. This wasn’t the way her life was supposed to go. She was meant to have a fulfilling career, a comfortable home and a loving partner and she has none of that. But Lily is her driving force and she won’t give up until she finds some sort of solution to their living crisis. Rosie who runs Driftwood House provides a temporary refuge for Nessa and Lily and it was brilliant to see her feature again as I loved her story which was told in Secrets at the Last House Before the Sea. It’s here that Nessa meets one of the guests Gabriel and this is where the story really took off for me.

Gabriel is a businessman who comes across as uncaring, arrogant and he acts like he can do whatever he wants in particular walk all over people’s emotions. When Nessa hears of his company’s plans to build over the abandoned village she is distraught. It’s her last remaining link to her grandmother and in the absence of a loving supportive family she feels scared and alone and hasn’t anyone real close that she can turn to for advice and ideas. When a box with papers is discovered in Rosie’s old house Nessa fortunes begin to change but in order to reach that end point there is a long journey to go and to me it seemed an insurmountable task. She has to stay in the cottage for thirty days and nights and then it will stay in the family. But the cottage is in an awful state and inhabitable. How can she do this with the odds very much stacked against her? But Nessa needs a home for herself and Lily and her passion and love shine through even if Gabriel and in particular his father are determined that the remains of the village will be knocked to the ground and a new housing development built in its place.

It was obvious that Gabriel and Nessa had that little spark or connection but for the most part they rubbed each other up the wrong way and had false impressions of each other and really you couldn’t blame Nessa for this given that he potentially was going to shatter the last thread she was clinging to in order to get some sort of security for herself and Lily. But really Gabriel, was such an enigma. He had that stern, corporate side to him in that he had to stay rigidly to deadlines and it was almost as if he was afraid of his father and not seeing business opportunities through to their conclusion. But on the other hand, the longer he remained in Heaven’s Cove the more he loosened up and started to see life in a different way. The gentler more creative side of him started to emerge and I really thought that if the businessman bravado could disappear that with the help of Nessa he could really change and become the man he secretly wanted to be. But with so much going against both Nessa and himself with their own personal circumstances I questioned whether a positive outcome for anyone could be reached at all? And as for Nessa’s interfering mother-in-law Valerie well she was someone who I detested for the majority of the book and then when you dig a little deeper I did feel some sympathy for her,

Whether Nessa completes her challenge and finds the security and happy ending she so desperately craves and deserves well you’ll have to read this wonderful book for yourself to discover the answer. I loved how the conclusion was a little bit different from what I had expected given the way certain things were developing during the course of the book. It felt real and believable and it threw an interesting slant on things. There is heartbreak in the story but also moments of hope, courage and strength throughout too that keep you rapidly turning the pages. I really hope this won’t be the last in the series as Heaven’s Cove and all the characters I have met there really have captured a piece of my heart and I want to continue to hear their stories and learn more about them.

Nessa is a struggling single mum without a home or a job. She inherits a letter and the key to a cottage from her grandmother and this gives her a chance for a fresh start. But the cottage is scheduled for demolition so she must fight for the past and her future.
The Key to the Last House Before The Sea is a warm and emotional novel. It is the fourth book in Liz Eeles' Heaven's Cove series but would work as a standalone novel.
Nessa is finding life tough at the moment. Her ex is useless and her mother in law is overbearing. Her employer retired and closed the business so she has no work and her grandmother just died. She is shocked to inherit the deeds and a key to a derelict cottage. But this also seems doomed as the area is due to be redeveloped. Whilst staying at a guest house, she meets Gabriel who is a city slicker and reveals that he is the property developer about to destroy her final chance at a fresh start.
There is a wonderful tension between Nessa and Gabriel. He has a softer side which we have knowledge of thanks to the alternating perspectives. His father is domineering and doesn't appreciate what he perceives as weakness. Gabriel's artistic side is crying out to be released and I was keen for Nessa to see his hidden qualities. Both characters need to find the courage to stand up to their family and be confident in themselves.
The scenery is brought to life through vivid descriptions. I was swept up in the story of the main pair but it was also nice to catch up with characters from the previous books. The tone of the book is uplifting as the plot centres around being true to one's self whilst appreciating the natural world, friendships and family.
The Key to the Last House Before The Sea was a wonderful book and may be my new favourite book in the series!

What do you do when you are a single mom in a small tourist town where rentals are sky high? Your mom and dad have both passed away and now you find yourself scattering the ashes of your beloved grandmother. You and your sweet five year old daughter are homeless, and your employer just closed his store, so you are also unemployed. Nessa is in this situation and feels she can rely on the generosity of kind friends for only so long.

She is helping out at Driftwood House, Rosie’s B&B, in an informal exchange for lodging when Gabriel in his suit and tie sweeps into town with plans to demolish “Ghost Village,” including Nessie’s family’s cottage. Nessa scrambles to find a way to stop the plans while still providing for her daughter’s future and happiness.

The story is told from the points of view of Nessa, Gabriel, and Valerie, the mother of Nessa’s ex-husband Jake. Jake is, depending on whom you talk to a star of industry in his new job (Valerie), an unreliable, rarely present or contributing father (Nessa), or a free spirit (Jake). All of the characters have secrets and problems. As they work through them, there are interesting plot twists that arise. Nessa is passionate about her family and their legacy and about doing her best and what is right for her daughter Lily who is an adorable child.

Without indulging in spoilers, I can say that this is a story that became a page turner for me, but not in the sense of a thriller. I became involved in the characters and wanted to see happy endings for them. Like the characters, I could not see how anything nearing bliss could be achieved.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Quite a contemporary story covering social issues of today and set in the fictional Devonshire village of Heaven’s Cove. Single mum Nessa has grown up in Heaven’s Cove but now her grandmother has died, Nessa finds herself homeless as she lived with her grandmother in a rented cottage. As if that wasn’t enough to contend with she has also lost her job when the owner of the shop she worked in decided to retire.

While clearing her grandmother’s effects, Nessa finds an old key. She suspects it’s for the cottage at the ‘Ghost Village’ so named by the locals as the cottages there were abandoned many years ago after a severe storm swept away most of the homes apart from Nessa’s grandmothers childhood home. Desperate to find a home for herself and her young daughter, Nessa thinks that if she puts the work in, she will be able to renovate the cottage and make it a home for herself and her young daughter.

Unbeknown to Nessa developers have beaten her to it and plan to demolish everything remaining in this little hidden cove and turn it into a luxury housing complex for rich investors. Something of a threat to many living in rural and coastal communities today, the developers are always there, ready to pounce.

It’s a story of family loyalties and perseverance. Nessa very much faces adversity from all sides, from the property developer’s son to her Mother-in-law. There are plenty of reasons to root for the characters. It’s not just Nessa who has family problems. It’s an interesting plot looking at how people can often find themselves living their life to please others rather than doing what makes them happy. I enjoyed this book which keeps you turning the pages.

Every family has a history. It’s a mixture of happy and sad memories. You want to gather as much heirlooms as possible. Sometimes it’s something small like a photo or a piece of jewellery. That’s easy. You put the photo in a pretty album or frame. You wear the jewellery or keep it safe in a box.

What if your legacy is a crumbling cottage on a deserted beach and someone is trying to take it away from you? Would you let it go without a fight or would you accept the challenge in order to rescue it and secure your and your daughter’s future?

Is a crazy plan, but Nessa is determined. She will see it through even if she has to take some decisions she is not happy with. After all it’s for a good cause and what is thirty days in comparison to the rest of your life? It’s peanuts, right?

Readers who have visited Heaven’s Cove before know it’s a lovely place by the sea. The people are friendly and always ready to help a fellow villager.

Everything goes to plan until that call in the middle of the night. Is it over or does Nessa still stand a chance?

Parents sometimes think they know what is best for their children or they put them on a pedestal. They refuse to accept the truth. Maybe it’s time for them to throw the blinkers away.

Will Nessa and Gabriel find their way to the future they want and maybe a way to each other’s heart?

Sit back, feel the sun on your face, smell the briny air. Laugh and cry, but above all enjoy this lovely story. 5 stars

Thank you

A family tragedy leaves a lasting scar on Nessa's family when a great storm rose up and wiped out most of Sorrel Cove and Nessa's great-grandmother. Nessa has grown up with her grandmother hearing stories of Sorrel Cove and the storm her entire life so when Gabriel comes to Heaven's Cove with plans to turn the "Ghost Town" into luxury housing for executives looking for weekend getaways, Nessa will do anything to save her family's home, including trying to fix up the old cottage and live there for 30 consecutive days to fulfill the terms of the lease. Will Nessa succeed and save Sorrel's Cove or will Gabriel's plan for housing win?
This was a lovely story where you spend most of the time rooting for Nessa to come out on top and can barely manage to get through to the end when things are looking bleak. I loved the descriptions of the beach, the water, and Sorrel's Cove, it was so real, I felt as if I were standing in the sand with Nessa, Gabriel, and Lily. Valerie was a good foil for Nessa and it was interesting to see someone dealing with retirement and not finding the enjoyment she thought she'd find.
I really enjoyed this book and would love to visit Heaven's Cove again.

The Key to the Last House Before the Sea (Heaven's Cove Book 4) by Liz Eeles is an excellent story of being down on your luck but yet hope finds you. That last house in Ghost Village before the sea is not only providing hope for Nessa Paulson but in some strange way for Gabriel Gantwich too.

I have never met characters that needed saving more than Nessa and Gabriel. Nessa because she is poor financially while Gabriel is so poor in spirit. I kept reading to see these two duke it out, believing when the fight over the cottage had finished, love would be found. I never dreamed how it would all work out in the end for the Ghost Village. I will only say it is a rough start for these two with so several others getting involved too. The conclusion is wonderful, not too rushed, and totally believable. I wish it was a true story instead of fiction so that I could start planning my trip to village of Heaven’s Cove to see the Ghost Village too.

I highly recommend this book to all.

An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is part of the Heaven's Cove series. It can be read as a standalone novel. Driftwood House and Rosie feature heavily in this book, but the other villagers only have cameo roles. Nessa and Gabriel are the protagonists in this book, both new characters. This is a very emotional read in places, Nessa is such a lovely character, who is in a very desperate situation. Although there was a lot of heartbreak, there were also plenty of heartwarming and uplifting moments too. Heaven's Cove is an idyllic sounding place. I would definitely visit there if it was a real place. Sorrel Cove sounds fascinating too. I have seen a few derelict and abandoned villages in the South West of The U.K. They are very interesting but also very sad. Liz Eeles captured the atmosphere perfectly. The book is very well written, and set the scene very well. I love this series so much and I would love it if there are more books in this series. If not, I am really looking forward to reading Liz Eeles next book. Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my ARC.

The Key To The Last House Before The Sea

I am very disappointed to find that I began at the wrong end of this series!! I was looking forward to more of Nessa & Gabriel's story! Oh well! I guess that tells you how much I liked it! I appreciated the descriptions of the village, the land, & the sea, plus the historical backstory. It sounds like a place I would have loved living in, in an alternate universe (I love my little mountain hometown though!). I love books about the "have it all's" losing out to the "never had's" of life. Being a "never had" myself. 😁 I liked that the story is "clean", w/o profanities every other word, violence, or gratuitous sex. Although I personally don't condone unmarried sex, I will read books which contain it, if it actually relates to the story & isn't "in your face". It does relate to the story & it definitely is not the "fall into bed upon first meeting" kind. So, if you like lovely, soft, love stories w/ a few obstacles, of course, you will like this one!

Heaven’s Cove series by Liz Eeles was a wonderful series that I inhaled this week. It was another great find on Kindle Unlimited. The stories all take place in a wonderful place called Heaven’s Cove. A small vacation town where people take care of each other. A small town where there are mysteries to be solved and new people to be met. Each novel can be read independently. Also each story contains a parallel story from the past that directly deals with the modern story. The novels are awesome.

The Key to the Last House Before the Sea brings us Nessa and her story. She is a single mom and has lost her grandmother with whom she lived, her job and her home. Nessa is determined to find her way forward without any help if necessary. Her grandmother leaves her a key to an old house - definitely decrepit - and almost uninhabitable. Gabriel is in town to acquire the land that Nessa’s house is on. He is slowly falling for her, but she is focused on making a home for her child. Then some interesting things come to light and maybe that house has more than memories.

Love this series, the books never disappoint. Heaven's Cove sounds like a beautiful place to live, even if everyone knows all your secrets. You can't get away with anything living there. I think I remember Nessa from the first book. So glad Valerie finally took off her rose tinted glasses and saw the truth about her son. Nessa allowed Valerie as much time with Lily, but that wasn't enough. Nessa was brave living in that house at first. It was pretty dilapidated and would have been scary at night, not to mention all the spiders. Loved the relationship she had with Gabriel, of course both of them refused to see that they were the best thing for each other. There definitely needs to be an update about all the characters from the previous books.

Definitely recommend the book and the previous ones in the series. Loved the characters, story and writing style. Wouldn't mind reading more books about Heaven's Cove. Hopefully there's a few more in the series. Look forward to reading more books by the author. Loved the cover of the book.

The story
Nessa is a 30 year old single mother to her daughter Lily. She lost both parents when young, and now that her grandmother has passed away, her home has gone too. She’s jobless after the owner of the hardware store retired and is stayed with her best friend in her B&B for the moment. When she has the chance to move into her grandmother’s deserted childhood home, she grabs the chance. But property developer Gabriel cannot let they happen.

My thoughts
There is a lot of raw and tough emotional stuff for Nessa to deal with in this lovely story. She sees the sadness within Gabriel and is respectful to him, even when it’s hard. Secretly, both have feelings for each other, but it’s all very restrained. At the heart of this story is a great mother, trying to do whatever she needs to do to give her young daughter a stable and loving home despite dealing with every challenge thrown at her. It’s a goodie.

I read an eARC copy courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher.

Back in Heaven’s Cove for the final time and whilst Heaven Cove is the thread that runs through all of these books, they can all be read as standalone novels and the final one is no exception.

Single mum, Nessa and the gorgeous daughter of hers Lily need to find a new place to call home. Her grandmother leaves her a legacy, a key tot eh cottage where she grew up. The cottage now partially derelict in an abandoned village near Heaven’s Cove could be the answer to Nessa’s dreams. Trouble is apparently the land has been bought and the whole place is due for demolition for a more modern project.

Nessa comes face to face with the project manager, a rather uptight Gabriel. Clearly his father’s puppet and perpetually trying to please him rather than do what he wants to do the most – paint. Pushed by his father he is determined to make sure Nessa fails in her quest.

Gabriel has an unlikely ally in Nessa’s ex mother-in-law, Valerie. Determined to have some purpose in life and not admit that her son is unreliable as a son and even more so as a father, she wants to make sure her granddaughter Lily has a better life than Nessa could ever give her.

With everything against her Nessa is going to have to dig deep and find the strength to save herself, her daughter and the family home.

Reflecting on family dynamics, this book puts that into focus and shows that perhaps someone people are misunderstood with their determination to do the right thing by their offspring. Sometimes you have to let them fly to have them come back. What better place to do this than in Heaven’s Cove. A book not just focussing on Nessa and Lily but also what Gabriel and Valerie’s are going through to.

A book where it shows that outsiders and new beginnings need to sometimes be fought for and to have that strength to fight for what they believe in and most importantly what will make them happy. A happy diversion of a book.

Poor Nessa. She’s certainly had a heartbreaking life. Death of her father, then her mother. Abandoned by her adulterous husband & left to raise their baby alone. Albeit with her grammas help. Then the passing of her Gramma. Loss of job and home. The only real light she had on getting out of a dismal deck of cards is a surprise key and her battle axe of a mother in law hatefully tried to squash it.

I only gave this less stars because I truly despised Valerie. Along with yet another big money man looking to earn top dollar while not giving a care about the actual residents of HC. Even a decent businessman would know you Can’t have a good destination spot if you chase out all those who aren’t simply just visiting.

Book 4 in Heaven's Cove series. I loved it as I have all of them!

I felt sorry for poor Nessa using all her strength and abilities to provide a loving home for her beloved daughter Lily whose father is basically a waste of space! He doesn't contribute regularly to Lily's upkeep despite his mother's blinkered opinion of her only child!

Along comes Gabriel with a plan which will upset Nessa's already worn down state of mind having recently lost her beloved grandmother.

However, things don't go according to anyone's plans and take a completely different turn.

Onto book 5. I can't get enough of them !

I loved The Key to the Last House Before the Sea! I've never read Lix Eeles before but I'm going looking for her other novels right now! I was captured and enraptured from the beginning. Nessa is a young single mother who is grieving the loss of her beloved grandmother, yet determined to do her best for her daughter Lily. By repairing her gran's mothers old home, Nessa hopes to save the Ghost Village from demolition and posh development whilst providing them with somewhere to live. Gabriel's father expects him to do everything he can to prevent Nessa from succeeding. Highly recommend

I was so excited to be successful in obtaining an early ARC of The Key to the Last House Before the Sea.

I have absolutely loved the series and this one is no exception. Although part of a series it can be read alone.

A lovely, easy read which had me totally gripped from the beginning but I am gutted to have finished it so quickly.

Liz is definitely one of my favourite authors and I look forward to reading more of her books.

I highly recommend this and the others in the series.

This is a beautifully written book. The characters are like friends and family. The entire series has humor as well as the daily strife that we encounter on a daily basis. This story involves Nessa, who is a single Mother doing her best to support her young daughter with out the help of the dead beat father. Its heartwarming to see the extent she will go through for her child. I would love to see more books in this series!
