With fox hunting banned, is hunting humans the next best countryside sport for the most wealthy and ruthless thrill-seekers? Rumours of the ‘Wild Chase’ have circulated for years but Sam Applewhite refuses to believe them until she is invited to a party at the opulent estate of country gent (and alleged Russian oligarch) Elgin Jubilee. It’s not her usual scene but Sam can’t resist a brightly coloured cocktail. Also, this party is her chance to come face to face with the man responsible for stealing her father’s fortune. When Sam uncovers deadly secrets in Jubilee’s private hunting ground, she becomes one of the hunted. Can she team up with failed entrepreneur Seb, unhinged method actress Kat and the roughest toughest members of the Odinson clan to turn the tables on the hunters and survive the day? Praise for the Sam Applewhite “Original, inventive and funny — what more do you want in a crime drama?” “An up-to-date sassy Agatha Christie.” “The characters here are so real that you feel you know them after just a few pages.” “Crazy, laugh out loud mayhem all the way through, and an amazing finale. Can't wait to read the next one in the series.” “Lovable main characters, greedy villains who self destruct with a vengeance and enough laugh out loud moments to make my day.”
I say it every time but they just get better and better
I don't normally enjoy the books with the Viking family involved. However in this one Hilde has developed a sense of humour and the other characters play off each other perfectly. The second half of the book has a laugh in almost every single chapter and the developing relationship between Sam and Camara Is genuinely funny. This book has elements of Tom Sharpe and other great writers but these two really stand out on their own.
I have never been so loyal to authors before. I have started to listen to their books at the beginning of the pandemic and I'm addicted. After odd-jobs I couldn't wait to read more and I'm always entertained
These books just get better and better. I started with "Odd Jobs" and now am working through the Sam Apple white series and jyst keep being amazed by the stories rolling out. They're poignant, sad, hilarious and utterly humanizing.
I've read and enjoyed the previous books in this series and I think they were all building up to this one. With a human chase on the grounds of a manor house and a rebuilt tank, what's not to love.
A new addition to the Applewhite storyline, and it's a more compact version than the earlier ones. Sam is invited to a cocktail party as a guest of Rich, to the country house of Elgin Jubilee. Now whether he is an English Gentleman or a Russian Oligarch is a question. Also present is Magic Kingdom, one of the people responsible for her dad being bankrupt. Unbeknown to her, this is also the setting for the Wild Chase where multi-millionaires hunt down people in a faux fox hunt. While she shouldn't be involved, Gunnolf and Hermod, two of the Vikings are involved as competitors. Of course this means Hilde has to get involved to help out. Hilde of course has her own issues, she's helping out Delia who has managed, somehow, to buy a broken down tank, the perfect project for Hilde. Is it a spoiler, especially given the Viking Longship in a previous book, that the tank will end up getting used in the end. It's the usual mix of mayhem murder and humour. Sams relationship with both Rich and Camara take a little step forward, although i do worry if Sam is ever going to get her Happy Ever After. Suppose I need to keep reading
