Thaine Chase perfectly encapsulates the epitome of action and thrill in Rise by Sin.
Corbin Dwyer spends his days moving violent psychiatric patients from one hospital room to another, and his nights fighting the urge to put a gun in his mouth and end it all. Despite this constant battle, his highly decorated past as a veteran of the French Foreign Legion has given him the bravery and grit to keep pushing forward.
Waking up one morning to a cryptic voicemail, Corbin learns that his father, whom he hasn’t seen in over twenty years, has been murdered. Deciding to honor a promise he made decades ago, Corbin returns to Nickel Bay, a small town on the great lakes that seems to be untouched by time in both look and personality.
Memories of his turbulent childhood came flooding back to him when he is forced to deal with family he hasn’t seen in years, including those with a history in both law enforcement and violent crime.
As he prepares to dispose of his father’s remains, Corbin stumbles across information that seems to clearly point out the individual directly responsible for the murder.
A classic battle between Corbin’s head and heart rages on as he tries to navigate away from the war brewing between those he cares about. He must fulfill the promise made to his father, putting him in the middle of the upcoming war he doesn’t want, but is more than trained to win.
Is this the final nail in the coffin for Corbin’s darkened heart? Will he be forced to embrace his old self when unforgivable lines are crossed?
Thaine Chase, the pen name of Newfoundlander Glenn Doyle, has captivated audiences across various media for nearly four decades. Born in Newfoundland, he studied journalism and screenwriting in Toronto, where he achieved success in both film and theatre before eventually becoming a novelist.
To date, Thaine has published a diverse range of titles across various genres, earning critical acclaim and a few awards.
Corbin Dwyer has issues to be sure, but doing the right thing ain't one of them.
Rise By Sin is the first Corbin Dwyer novel from Thaine Chase and what an introduction it is. Not only did it repeatedly surprise me from his character's point of view, the story itself was full of twists, turns, and completely unexpected solutions.
Corbin has a dark past he likes to keep hidden, but going back to his hometown for his father's funeral we learn his childhood may have been even darker. Dwyer has relatives in both law enforcement and organized crime and neither care for him at all.
Unbothered by his dysfunctional relatives, Corbin is focused on a single goal, to keep his promise to his father and see his wishes fulfilled... but when Dwyer suddenly realized his father was murdered, Corbin adopts a 'no holds barred' approach to solving the crime.
This story has action, thrills, secrets, and an intensity that wouldn't let me stop reading. I have no idea where Thaine is going with this new character, but based on the energy of Rise By Sin, Corbin Dwyer is the guy Jack Reacher calls to kill the monsters under his bed.
In a world of tired regurgitated hero novels we find an original anti hero. Corbin Dwyer lives a life in search of the same things we should all be looking for, our roots and what grounds us in life.
When a patriarch of the town is tortured and murdered, the town is not ready for the ramifications this act is about to unleash. Enter Corbin Dwyer, the towns forgotten Son, an elite soldier with little patience for the rule of law and the the politeness of todays society. He carries out the acts we only dream of doing in our daily lives.
This is a novel of family, revenge and correcting wrongs. What makes this different is that the normal plot lines found in every other novel is ignored. The author finds a way to surprise us at every turn and give us the results we want in a way we don’t see them coming. I love the descriptions used in the novel to bring us alongside of Corbin in his adventures. You feel as if you’re in the novel and are part of the Corbin Dwyer world.
I recommend this book for people who are fans of adventure, mystery, action, revenge and the list goes on and on. I can’t wait for the next installment!! Well done to the author. If you haven’t checked out Thaine Chase’s other books, I highly recommend them. He’s a breath of fresh air in a world that often feels stale.
Rise By Sin is one of those books that just takes you on a ride, which is what this genre is supposed to do. It grabs hold on page one and even after you've finished, it holds on just that little extra to really remind you how much fun that ride actually was.
The main character, Corbin Dwyer is so unique while still remaining the expected hero for this type of story and I don't know how this author managed it, it's quite impressive. I think one unique aspect of Mr. Chase's writing style which enriches the book is the absence of dialogue. Don't ask me how he does it, but it works, and what's more impressive, the writing isn't bogged down with tired and excessive descriptions that goes on for pages and pages. Now, I don't doubt the Dwyer character from this book will draw comparisons to characters like Reacher, John McClane, or Jason Bourne but rest assured Corbin can stand up along side of any of them, and then some.
Rise By Sin is an intense non-stop thrilling reminder that; we can choose our friends, but we can't choose our family.
If you read only one story this year do yourself the favor and make it Rise by Sin by Thaine Chase!
This is one filled to the freaking brim with action, honor, revenge, and some of the deepest kinds of love! (Plus it doesnt hurt that Corbin Dwyer is next level sort of b*d*ss!!!) The plot is so thick with details and the picture he (Mr Chase) paints that you’ll feel like you’re inside the scenes along with the characters. And speaking of the characters, he has this way of (in every one of his Stories that ive read to date) making you actually feel invested in the characters. All the good and the bad of each, the pretty the messy parts, the heroes and the villains. Each one is richly written and complex in a way that leaves you craving more of each one of their own journeys.
If you want a Story that could/should be the next huge blockbuster movie level of hit, get yourself a copy of Rise by Sin! You will NOT regret it!!! (I cant wait for the sequel!!!) TJ Medlin July 2022
This is the first time ever a book character invaded my dreams, ha! But I gots myself a crush on this Dwyer fella. Who doesn't love a lad who does what he does because that's what he's got to do? This is a fast book with action, tension, and raw revenge. I don't know what it is but this author pulls me into a reading daze with a combo of barebones descriptions and quirky characters. I loved this book.
This book had me captivated once I got through chapter 1 and the writing just got better and so did the characters - they became loveable or hateable, and the plot just thickened. This book was better than NL pea soup! I think our dogs and cats loved it too since I like to read aloud!!
I’m curious, why isn’t Thaine more widely recognized? I bought Rise By Sin from him during my vacation in Newfoundland, and after reading it, I’m already eager to dive into more of his work.
On a whim I took the advice from my son to read this book. I was caught off guard at how quickly I consumed every page. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
his book gripped my attention from the very start and with my ADHD and reading disability that is saying something. I simply couldn't put it down, the mysterious past, the interesting characters, and great plot kept me reading. So much so that I immediately ordered the next two in the series the moment I finished. I like how it didn't really end on a cliff hanger, but instead left enough loose ends to keep me interested. I'm looking forward to continuing my reading of this very entertaining series.

Rise by Sin is a fantastic read. When I first started it, I thought with excitement, “oh man here comes another, hard core, action packed hero kicking butt!” Well that was only partially correct, which made it even better than expected! The main character is actually complex, with a history that is complicated, and for sure not a typical, lily white hero that every child should look up too. I appreciated that this story is something you can actually see happening, based in reality oppose to a fantasy. I like this author and can’t wait to read more books from him. Hurry up and release more!
Apparently now this is a family affair. I honestly am not a reader, but my husband twisted my arm to try this book. I did enjoy it and enjoyed talking to him as I got to some of his favorite parts. If you like action then this book is for you.
As always Thaine Chase's books are full of action and suspense. This one is no exception! I caught myself gasping out loud several times while reading this book. I could totally picture this being a movie.
I thoroughly enjoyed the characters in this book and stayed up late finishing it. I was tempted to start book 2 eight away, but will relax with it after supper. Thanks for the great writing
