A rollercoaster of fun and humour. Will Harry find his grandma and get her safely to the award ceremony??
I just love Jo Simmons books! I have read many of the books in this series (as I would call them because they are all part of the same universe) and I have loved them all! They are just so much fun and Jo Simmons is really awesome at writing wonderful stories that are both sweet and hilarious.
In this hilarious book we meet Harry, a boy very tall for his age (and throughout the book there are many misunderstandings about him due to his height). He has one task on this day of days, get his grandma to the hairdresser, find a new outfit and a hat, eat some lunch, and then go to the award ceremony! Doesn’t seem hard right? Well, hilariously, everything will go wrong that day. Because grandma has her own plans which include porkpieing a security guard, hopping in rollercoasters, and more. We see how Harry tries his best to catch up to his grandma with hilarious situations happening because of it. I laughed so much, though I also have to say that I felt sorry for Harry at times, he just wanted those puppy points and keep his granny safe.
I loved finding out why grandma was getting the award, we do get some talk about loo rolls, but that just confused the heck out of me. But apparently it was truly loo rolls. Grandma invented something amazing and inspired lots of people. Throughout the book we see that lots of people know her and want her to sign loo rolls. Yes, really. Loo rolls. Be prepared for tons of loo rolls. XD
I loved the later parts of the book and all that happened there. That granny sure is awesome!
I absolutely LOVE seeing Harry’s friends, because they are from the previous books! Jonny, Tom, and Keith are all there. Not a whole lot but we do meet them at times and I am just so happy~
I wasn’t sure what to make of Harry’s sister at first, but I really liked her as the story went on.
There are also a couple of goats that love to eat pants and knickers and flowers and well everything. I guess maybe the fence should be fixed, but then again, these are goats, they will find a way. XD
I love the idea of puppy points, that is such a fun idea to have your kid do chores and other things to show he can be responsible + let him think if he really wants the puppy. I do hope that mom was able to save for a puppy because DANG those are expensive (my husband and I would love a dog, but so far have no success at shelters, but buying a puppy for a certified person… is way too much (like 1500+ euros)).
The ending just made me smile, Harry was already pretty responsible, but he has gotten more and more responsible as the story went on. I loved what he did for his grandma and loved that they had such a wonderful day.
The art was just fabulous once again, Nathan Reed has done it again. The text was already very funny but seeing the illustrations made me laugh so much more!
I just had one little nagging thing, and that was how the grandmother was. She knows her grandson is following her, that he is doing his best to keep track of her, and she just ditches him constantly. That was just not my thing. I am glad that later on in the book they had a talk about it (and I was so happy that Harry was just letting it all out, go Harry), but it just took a tad too long for me.
All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this one to all. Are you in the mood for something funny and hilarious? Some sweet? Something with goats and grannies? Be sure to check this one out!
3.75/5. Nebuvo tiek juokinga, kiek tikėjausi, bet susiskaitė neblogai. Man patiko, kad gana gerai sujungtos dvi priešingybės: pagrindinis veikėjas aukštas ir drovus berniukas, kuris ieško mažytės idėjų kupinos energingos močiutės.
Hihi, the book "Help, I lost my grandma in the supermarket!" by Jo Simmons is an insanely funny book with a loving core.
It's about Harry, who has wanted a dog for a long time and has to earn "dog points" to get one. If he takes his grandma to the hairdresser, dresses her up, and accompanies her to the lifetime achievement award ceremony, he's supposed to get 50 points for it. Harry doesn't say no, but he hasn't reckoned with Mini (his grandma), who doesn't want to go to the awards ceremony at all. She keeps escaping and making a day of it. As a result, the shy Harry constantly oversteps his own established boundaries and undergoes an enormously positive development in pursuit of his grandma. Along the way, the two get to know each other even better.
As soon as I started reading, I couldn't stop. Jo Simmons has a talent for grabbing her readers and making them sink right into the story - with the desire to read on ("just one more chapter... One more... Okay, one. But then it's over..."). The characters are all described in a very likeable and multi-faceted way - they grew on me right away (especially Harry and Mini, who definitely has her heart in the right place).
The witty illustrations accompany the reader through the text, making the book appealing and engaging even for rather unmotivated children's readers.
Definitely five stars from me and a clear buy recommendation for the slightly older reading kids (about 8 years and up). Thanks for the great little book!
Harry, really, really, REALLY, wants a puppy. His mum, not sure he is responsible enough at age 11, makes him do jobs around the house for 'puppy points'. Once he has notched up 500 points, He can have a dog.
When the opportunity to score 25 points in one day comes along, Harry is keen. How hard can it be? All he has to do is get his tiny granny (Mini) to town, then the hairdressers and then an important awards event that afternoon.
Little does he know that Mini is not a normal little old lady, content to look back fondly on her life achievements and be happy. She still has tons of stuff to do, the only problem for Harry being is that much of it is also on her list for the day.
Harry begins the day as his usual gangly self, but finishes it, confident, keen and ready to be a costume designer. Who would've guessed it? Certainly not him, his friends or his family.
Granny is just glad he came along for the wild ride!
Another hilarious family caper from Simmons and Reed, I Lost my Granny in the Supermarket throws the stereotypical Granny out the window. Mini refuses to think or act old, telling her family there is much life in her yet, and she proves exactly that to her self-conscious grandson.
Her wisdom of living life, having fun and not worrying what others think, brushes off on her 11 year old grandson - something that would benefit many young, anxious teens today.
Packed with funny illustrations depicting the action, along with adventurous fonts throughout, this is a laugh out loud novel.
This was an extremely funny book from start to finish and my daughter giggled all the way through it. Both my daughter and I really identified with the boy (Harry) and were desperate for him to save the day and earn his fifty puppy points!
In the story 10 year old Harry is tasked with the job of looking after his Granny Mini for the day and taking her to the just made it loo roll ceremony where she has won the lifetime achievement award. This sounds simple but you haven't met Harry's Gran!
Unfortunately she has an alternative plan for her day and loses Harry in the supermarket. All sorts of chaotic adventures follow whilst Harry tries to keep up with her!
We loved Grandma despite her crazy ways and it was great to see Harry and her joining forces by the end.
The illustrations really helped to capture the funny situations and my daughter loved them.
Overall a very entertaining and enjoyable read. We will definitely be looking out for more books by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloomsbury Publishing for this eARC.
I really enjoyed this book. It was fun, lighthearted and amusing.
The relationship between Harry and Mini develops nicely and I’d love to have a Mini in my life. She’d keep you on your toes. Harry comes across as a very resourceful young chap and I’m so glad it has the ending it has, open for the next instalment of Mini fun.
Many thanks to the author and NetGalley for gifting me this arc in exchange for an unbiased review.
How I lost my granny in the supermarket was another hilarious middle grade book by Jo Simmons!
The writing was laugh out loud funny and witty at places. The writing was readable and simple enough for the middle grade audience but it was very engaging! The plot was unique and eccentric which I definitely enjoyed!
Overall this was a brilliant read that I would recommend! Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the E-arc! All opinions are my own.
This was another fabulous book from this author. It was a madcap adventure with colourful characters. I loved the relationship between Harry and his gran. It reminded me so much of my own grandmother before she passed away so gave me super nostalgia feelings. Fantastic read.
I loved this, great fun and lots of laugh out loud moments. I particularly loved the relationship between Harry and his gran. Reminded me so much of my nan, who could be quite naughty at times.
When Harry’s mum asks him to make sure his Gran Mini gets to an awards ceremony, he greatly underestimated how much of a challenge this could possibly be.
A laugh a page, Harry and Mini pack an awful lot into their grand day out - a trip to the supermarket, swimming at the leisure centre (and taking a lifeguard shift), riding the rollercoasters at the theme park, getting a hair cut and more…
Some suspension of disbelief may be required but the whole book is such fun it’s forgiven!
With thanks to NetGalley and Bloomsbury for the digital ARC.
Jo Simmons is a wonderful writer especially for the 7-10 age range or those reluctant readers who need a book to give them that gentle push in the direction of a great story or new author. I Lost My Granny in the Supermarket is a wonderful madcap adventure about Harry who has to accompany his granny to receive an accolade for her services to the industry at the Just Made It loo roll awards; however Granny Mini has other plans and manages to escape her grandson’s chaperoning and lead him through a selection of comical adventures. The story is fast paced and the humour is brilliant. As in previous books Nathan Reed’s illustrations are fantastic bringing alive the energy and craziness of the events . I’d certainly recommend this to lower KS 2 teachers and learners. Why should David Walliams grab the limelight ... introduce your children to the delights of Jo Simmons.
