I really enjoyed this book, particularly the world and characters that Howard created. There were enough unique aspects to her fantasy novel that it felt fresh and exciting and I wanted to read on and find out what happened to Dylan as he navigated his way through the new world and relationships that he found himself in. My only qualm is that for a middle grade book it felt very slow to get started… however, it didn’t stop me enjoying it overall as well as keeping an eye out for the next book in the series.

Must Read!!

This was such an incredible book! Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex follows a young boy as he is whisked away into another world of magic, adventure and dangers. As someone who loved the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books growing up, I can firmly say that Dylan Dover cements its place in the canon. Dylan is an amazing protagonist who is relatable to any readers, young and older. He handles the various challenges thrown at him with empathy, determination and humour. The extraordinary world of floating houses and magical schools will bring any readers in, but the emotional core between Dylan, his brother, and his family will be what keeps readers coming back for more. Lynne Howard has done a brilliant job combining everything we love about the fantasy genre while making it fresh, exciting and heartwarming. You must go read Dylan Dover!

Our Rating: 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 for Goodreads

Dylan Dover always thought of himself as an ordinary boy at only twelve years old… that was until he fell into another realm that he realised that was anything but the case. He was an immortal. As he learns more about the immortal realm, he discovers his true family and heritage. That he is a warlock, that he has a twin brother and that there is a prophecy about him and his brother.

Dylan, along with his brother and their new-found wizard friend Thea, begin to unravel the mystery that surrounds their birth and the danger that threatens immortals and humans alike.

Let’s begin with what I felt didn’t work or didn’t enjoy about Dylan Dover.

First I shall begin with some of the character traits that I felt did not work so well. And first up, Dyan Dover himself. I found that Dylan was way too quick of a learner, while this is in theme in the genre, and with who Dylan Dover is, I would have enjoyed reading a bit more of a challenge with some of his new found powers. And I would have enjoyed this more, if in a lot of cases he seemed almost sceptical and/or nervous to try again for a second attempt. We’ve already seen you pretty much nail it Dylan, so what is with the hesitation? Also with Dylan, there was one part in the narrative where Dylan learns that his two dogs from his entire childhood were in fact immortals also, shapeshifters to be precise, he learns that they were tasked with looking after and protecting him. Orders from some unknown source (more about this part later). And Dylan just blinks and accepts it, no problem, no hesitation. And the second they transform back into the dogs he instantly is all over them. Which to me I felt uncomfortable reading. While he is an immortal, he is still only 12 years old as opposed to however old his shapeshifting dogs are. That was a little too much for my delicate eyes to read, while it was all harmless and in good faith, it just felt weird.

What I also found hard to believe, was that a lot of the “adults” would believe that these 12 year olds would know best with what to do, they would overshare with them what I would think would be stuff that I don’t think they should really be learning about. And these “adults” would be acting just the same as these 12 year olds, just with the occasional sprinkle of adult responsibilities.

And now onto the parts that I enjoyed. Which for me was the actual narrative. There was some really great parts. The very first chapter for example got me so well and truly hooked that I could not put it down. The intrigue and mystery surrounding the prophecy.

The main characters were great and really interesting to follow. They had a fun relationship with each other which made it very enjoyable to read.

Overall, while sometimes the characters lacked something of any real substance or thought. The narrative was amazing, and so hooking, The mystery and conspiracy that we follow the characters trying to uncover were interesting to follow and I look forward to seeing more becoming uncovered in the next book in the series.

Secrets are meant to rule us either be it in the form of the future or outcomes from our decisions. Let's go to the realm which holds secrets about Dylan, the protagonist of DYLAN DOVER (BOOK 1) by LYNNE HOWARD. The cover page is dedicated to the title and is intriguing.

•The book is about the prophecy which says that Dylan with three other children will be either the saviors of Immortals or the end of them. Dylan who was just 12, was living in a completely different place knowing nothing about these things associated with him. But one day, when he was in the middle of saving himself from other notorious children, fell into a vortex that teleported him to a different realm. Here he met his other siblings and also discovered the power he had inside.

Will they be able to save the Immortals? What is the mystery behind their birth and life? How will Dylan deal with this all? Read and experience a world that will either survive or meet a dead end!

•Characters are characterized well. The characters are unique , well developed, strong and impactful. The narration style is extremely smooth and convincing. The plot is very intriguing. Author has mentioned every small details effectively which adds a plus to the story.

•The plot is mysterious and thrilling with a lots of twists and turns. The book will surely keep the readers on edge throughout the book

I would strongly recommend this book to everyone

This is the first book in the Dylan Dover fantasy series which honestly looks like it's going to be a brilliantly popular and epic new series for the younger teen audience.
Having said that though - I'm way off that age group and was absolutely hooked from the start.

Dylan is an ordinary 12 year old - until one day he stumbles into a vortex that transports him to a parallel universe.

Now, everyone will know that I'm a big Harry Potter fan - but also Dr Who and the Marvel and DC universes - and this book gave me all these vibes.
With magic, prophecies, different universes and a great mystery to solve, I couldn't get enough of this.

The characters were really well presented making them relatable and likable which had me instantly invested in their journey.
It was great to see them from the very start as it felt as though we were all navigating this new world and learning the new skills all together.

The writing style was fast-paced, intriguing and exciting throughout which kept me sucked into the storyline and racing towards the end and I was still left wanting more.

This would make a great addition to any shelf at home or at school. I'd have loved to read this when I was younger and I think it will appeal to many readers.
I can't wait to see what happens next and am looking forward to book 2...

Firstly, I want to say that as an overall story this is really enjoyable and fun to read. It follows 12-year-old Dylan who falls into a vortex and finds himself in a magical world - discovering a twin brother! The book was well paced and fun to read.

On the downside, there is major editing that is needed. There is a LOT of missing grammar, and a lot of grammar where it's not necessary. There are also words missing in some sentences which makes the sentence unreadable. Another set of eyes would be good on this.

I hope the second book comes out soon as I am eager to read the next book in the series.

A fun adventure!

I love a good YA read and this book has all the making of a thrilling adventure. First we have a boy who believes he's just a normal person until he falls into a portal and into his new life as a warlock, Lynne does an amazing job of keeping you on your toes during this era. There's tons of twists and turns, like an unexpected and unknown twin to secrets that these two have to unravel.

Fast paced and exciting, the plot felt fresh and unlike anything ive read before. I enjoyed the range of characters as well as the mystery sub plot that was fun to try and solve. Overall a strong YA read that I would rec to adults and the younger audience.

Quick Summary: A thrilling ride for those who want a fantastical adventure

My Review: Right out of the gate, Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex by Lynne Howard cast a spell over me. It started with a thrilling prophecy, kept the action going with unexpected twists and turns throughout, and ended with a powerful snap. Even then, it wasn't over. That's the way to write a saga!

My Final Say: Why isn't this a movie?! Until it gets picked up, I sure hope it's considered for an audiobook. I think it would be amazing. I know readers will be on the edges of their seats with this incredible story. Book one certainly will not disappoint. Let's go!!!

Dylan is an ordinary boy. Or so he thinks. Then one day he finds out he is extraordinary. It is not the most original of story starting points. But the idea of an immortal world on the other side of a vortex is new and interesting enough to give the concept a new spin. Dylan is a likeable enough hero that you root for him right from the start even when he is still in the human world. And I'm glad that both Dylan and his birth parents worry about Dylan's poor adoptive parents who just lost a child. But I think everyone is just a little too accepting of this situation. This son that they were told didn't survive birth shows up and the parents just accept 'I don't know what happened' as an answer from the doctor who delivered them. Dylan and his brother just settle into family life together like everything isn't extremely odd. But the bad guy is appropriately sinister and creepy, and his minions are interesting characters because you can't really figure out whose side they are on. And the mystery of the prophecy and what it means and how it relates to Dylan is enough of a draw that it keeps you reading. It is a fun story and it leaves you wondering what will happen next.

With so many pre-teen and young adult fantasy novels to choose from these days, it's sometimes hard to know where to start or what to choose. Well I can tell you unequivocally that "Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex" is one you don't want to miss. The first book in the start of a new series, it has everything you'd want in an engrossing, adventure-filled tale of this nature, especially likeable main characters being first on the list. I had so much fun reading this book and hated to see it end without the next one readily handy. But I know when it does get released, I'll be first in line to get it. The world-building is handled magnificently and the action never lets up. This is one you'll want to read yourself, no matter your age, or read aloud with a favorite family member. The only thing that could enhance this book would be a movie based on it. I can only dream.

As someone who grew up obsessed with fantasy book series like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter, I am thrilled that there is a new and exciting fantasy book series on the market.

Dylan Dover tells the story of a boy who thinks he is ordinary, but discovers that he is from an immortal world. Lynne Howard’s storytelling is particularly captivating in this novel. Her characters are very realistic, well-rounded, and relatable. You can’t help but fall in love with all the characters in this book. Her vivid imagery and descriptive world building brings the world of Dylan Dover to life.

The pacing of this book is incredible and it is a true page-turner. While aimed at a middle school audience, this book is exciting and entertaining for all ages.

Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex is a refreshing and unique addition to the children’s fantasy canon, and I cannot recommend it enough!

I can’t wait for the second book!

Dylan Dover Into The Vortex is a wonderful middle grade debut that looks to be the start of an epic and enjoyable series. Now I do not have children but when you read a lot of horror and dark fantasy sometimes it’s nice to have a palate cleanse. For me I usually choose middle grade because there are some fantastic stories out there. I am happy to say that Dylan Dover is going to be one of my go-toos from now on.

If you are a fan of things like DC and Marvel or Dr Who this one will be a hit. I would also say it has vibes that would suit Harry Potter fans although I no longer like those myself. Needless to say if you are a fan of fun science fiction, superheroes and magic you will love this one. On top of this we have a sprinkle of mystery so it was right up my street.

The writing style was brilliantly suited to the novel, it was fast paced and kept me engaged and hooked. I adored everything about it. I also adored the characters which are all well developed and likable. I cannot wait to see what the future holds and will definitely be following this series going forward. If you are looking for a new middle grade read be it for younger readers or yourself, and you love a bit of sci-fi and fantasy this is for you.

In the world today there are so many young adult fantasy stories to choose from that it gets to the point where one gets a bit bored assuming they are getting the same-old-thing. I am here to tell you that Lynne Howard’s debut novel, Dylan Dover, Into the Vortex, is not the same-old-thing and it should not be missed. It is an excellent story giving us a new supernatural hero, actually more than one, and it gives the reader an adventure and characters that are truly likeable, which is not always the case.

Dylan is a very normal 12-year-old, or so he thinks. He goes to school, loves his pets and his adoptive parents, and gets picked on by the older kids. One day, as he is running away from some of those bullies, Dylan falls into a vortex that sends him to a parallel universe. In this new place, a very confused boy finds his real parents, a twin brother named Remy, and a new friend named Thea. He also finds out that he is actually a warlock who belongs in this new world. In addition to all of this, Dylan finds pure evil in the form of Balthazar, who will do anything to make sure that Dylan does not discover anymore of the truth around his background and his place in this new universe.

What follows is a great adventure as the newly reunited brothers and their friend Thea try to unravel the mystery of the twins’ birth and why they were separated and one sent to the human world. It is such a fun story to read and will leave you clamoring for the next in the series as the end will leave you with many unanswered questions regarding the boys and their prophecy (yes, of course, there is a prophecy).

Ms. Howard has given us all an extremely well-written and fun story with wonderful characters that, as I said before, are actually likeable as opposed to so many characters in young adult books that you just, dare I say it, don’t like at all. She has taken all that is good about the fantasy genre and written an interesting and fun new adventure that I am sure will be a hit with many, adults and children alike.

If you are a fan of Harry Potter… or Percy Jackson… or even Narnia… then I guarantee you will enjoy our new hero, Dylan, and his friends. I highly recommend this book. 5 stars!!

Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex marks the enthralling debut of the Dylan Dover series, a magical odyssey replete with dimensional portals, vampires, warlocks, and beyond. At the tender age of twelve, our protagonist, Dylan Dover, encounters extraordinary circumstances under the guise of adoption, leading a relatively commonplace life until a confrontation with bullies catapults him into an enchanting realm accessed through a fallen log. This unusual predicament prompts a revelation—his adoptive parents aren’t his biological ones, introducing him to his magical lineage.

This revelation precipitates the unfolding of Dylan’s inherent warlock powers and an ancient prophecy intimately linked to him. As he sets foot on this exceptional journey, a multitude of concealed truths and enigmas lay bare, prompting him to question the motivations behind his separation from his biological parents.

Lynne Howard’s consistent creative flair is vividly evident in this beguiling fantasy narrative. The spirited journey adeptly harmonizes elements of thrill and danger with a sprinkle of adolescent romance. The protagonist’s character, with its relatable nature, particularly appeals to boys of his age. Further, the book is imbued with delightful humor that provides a pleasant undercurrent throughout.

Howard succeeds in rendering a complex narrative into an engaging middle-grade novel. It’s a tale brimming with intriguing mysteries, alluring magic, unexpected plot twists, and a sense of wonder that leaves readers spellbound. The book culminates with several tantalizing cliffhangers that effectively whet the reader’s appetite for a sequel, offering an irresistible invitation to delve deeper into Howard’s meticulously crafted magical world.

Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex effuses an irresistible whimsy and fascination. It stands as a compelling and imaginative middle-grade fantasy novel and is a testament to the creative prowess of its author, Lynne Howard.

Dylan Dover : Into the vortex is an adventure book encompassimg the magic and chaos of the parallel universe and other surprising elements. It's a book that you will devour in a few hours. This is the first book in the Dylan Dover series.

We follow Dylan, a 12- year old boy who discovers that he is a warlock with extraordinary powers. He is part of a prophecy that foretells his birth along with three other children would either be in the roles of saviours or destroyers of the Immortals. He has a twin brother who is similarly powerful. Back to the present, Dylan trying to escape from bullies, falls into a vortex that transports him to a parallel universe.

One accidental event reunites him to his siblings and reveals the powers that he holds within himself. Regardless of his life in the previous world, he is about to be thrust into an adventure where evil and darkness closely follow by.

This is one of the best debut work that I have read in a while. With a significant powerful plotline and a vividly outlined cast of characters, Lynne Howard completely captivates us with this fantastic adventure. As the mystery and secrets find their way to light, prepare yourself to get flabbergasted with each chapter. There is a major cliffhanger which essentially builds up for an exciting sequel. Having said that I found this book as wholly entertaining and exciting to read. It has an unique touch of creative imagination and engaging writing style that makes it extremely fascinating to delve into. As it contains other surprising twists and revelations, you won't find a single dull moment of lacking enthusiasm. The antagonist is also worthy contender and his powers speaks for that. Dylan as a character is definitely a memorable one.

If you are into adventurous books with time sensitive and perilous undertakings then I would highly recommend this book to you.

Move over Percy Jackson, the new young superhero that every 12-year-old aspires to be, is here. I remember being that age and waiting for the day when I will discover that I have some hidden superpower or open my refrigerator door and get transported to another world. Or one day, I would daydream in class which was a fairly common occurrence, and suddenly realize I am not in my usual surroundings anymore. Well, I am past that age now, but I still dream. It is then that books like "Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex," still keep that want in me alive.

The feeling of discovery that you are gifted and have been chosen for a purpose higher than leading a rather mundane human existence keeps the readers turning pages. Our protagonist is 12-year-old Dylan, too thought as such until one day, he discovered that he was different, not a typical human boy. The story is written in such a way that it leaves small hints and clues like attracting mice to the cheese before it can land that final blow. The readers are made aware of an immortal world long before Dylan does. It makes the reader feel special as if we are in on the plan too.

Parallel lines don't meet, but parallel universes have intersections. It might seem mundane, but this came as quite a funny revelation to me while reading. At the heart of this story lies a prophecy that is made clear in the first chapter itself. There are two sides with differing opinions as to the revelation of the prophecy. A decision is taken, but how long will its effect last? A quartet, one girl, and three boys will change the game, or will the game change them? Pick up this page-turner to get lost in the vortex of the fantastical world that the author has built.

Dylan Dover Into The Vortex, is a spinning around first class fantasy that’s literally unputdownable. It takes all readers into fantasy land where anything can happen, I may not have agreed with all the leaders in what they were doing, but it shows the fantastic flair of imagination by author Lynne Howard. Four leaders Alexia, Callista, Baltazar and Atticus, who each leaders of a new immortal world. I loved reading a instruction note, as it gave me an early insight into what was going to happen and why. The prophecy must be hidden away so no one can find it. When a mother is about to give birth to multiple babies, the first one is a boy, but the others are born with strange birth marks on their inner wrists. A magic spell has been cast upon the other babies, two boys and their daughter, that have since disappeared, into the immortal world. I liked how the story switched from The year 1521 to the year 2018, where Dylan Dover’s mother becomes a bit over protective of her only child, when he adventures out. Strangely, Dylan goes missing where this magical story takes the reader to the The Department of Displaced or delusional Witches, Warlocks and Wizards. It made mind wonder what is now going to happen to Dylan Dover, being in a strange place, fantasy, magical book is fans fans of Stranger Things and Harry Potter.

Into the Vortex is a middle grade fantasy following Dylan Dover, a 12 year old boy that falls through a vortex and into a parallel universe. Dylan discovers magical powers, a long lost twin, and a secret prophecy that puts him at the center of saving both worlds.

I've been reading a lot of horror and thriller lately so diving into this was like a refreshing palette cleanser. The plot did start a little slow but made up for that by blowing me away. Howard has really crafted a special magical world teeming with vibrant characters. Dylan is a relatable character, whether he is running away from bullies or re-discovering his family. The cast of characters were fun, quirky, and well rounded. I especially enjoyed the connections Dylan had with his family, they truly were the heart and soul of the book. I can't wait to see what happens next in this series that will captivate readers of all ages.

Thank you to the author and RR BookTours for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily and all views expressed are my own.

As someone who doesn’t usually read science fiction, Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex completely surprised me. From the very first chapter, I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. Dylan’s journey from an ordinary kid to an immortal world beyond the vortex is both thrilling and inspiring. The novel is filled with adventure, danger, and mystery, and each twist kept me eagerly turning the pages.

What makes this story especially engaging is how easy it is to root for Dylan. Author Lynne Howard has ensured through her writing that, as the reader, you experience every challenge, triumph, and moment of self-discovery alongside him. The vivid world-building makes it impossible not to be drawn into the adventure yourself.

Even though sci-fi isn’t usually my genre, I loved every moment of this book. It is exciting, heartfelt, and full of wonder, a true adventure that leaves you wanting more. I cannot wait to continue reading the series!

Hi Lynne,

I was one of the people (the small Asian girl who told you she loves books) who bought your book at Comicon a month ago. I actually just finished reading it now! It was suuuuper good! 👍 I've even stayed up until 2am reading it all in one go...

This book reminded me so much of the books that I used to read when I was a kid, sitting in the library and consuming a whole book in 2 hours. I used to binge books so often back then. This brought back so many fond memories and good vibes!

I don't know why you were selling a whole novel at Comicon, but I'm soooo glad that you were! I got to find your beautiful gem of a book!

Super looking forward to book number 2!!!!!! Super hype!!!!!

Sincerely, your new fan,
XXX

WOW!!
Dylan Dover: Into the Vortex is a must-read! The protagonist, Dylan, is a spunky, captivating, and relatable character whose wild adventures make this book a real page-turner. The thrilling twists and turns in Dylan's story kept me on the edge of my seat through my entire read. Lynne Howard's excellent writing allows readers to escape into the enchanting world of warlocks and magic that she has crafted. Each page is a portal to riveting fantasies and spellbinding mysteries which invite readers to embark on a journey through the boundless expanse of imagination.
My only issue is that this book has not been turned into a movie/TV show yet!
Thank you Lynne Howard for this excellent novel. Can't wait for book #2!

Dylan Dover Into The Vortex Lynne Howard is a gripping young adult fantasy adventure that gives me the vibe of Lord Of the Rings.

The book start with 4 guardians of the world of immortals.
Baltazaar with the other three guardians made a world of immortals. He wants to make a peaceful world where they don't have to live hidden from humans. Suddenly he received a prophecy, their world would be destroyed by three girls and a boy. Peace is far away from the world by now. The prophecy said- "Peace is so fragile, it's so easily torn. Your fate rests upon those who have not yet born. "
Baltazaar hides the prophecy in an invisible volt. He would do what needs to maintain peace, by hook or crook he would do it. The siblings will be born on the same day, baltazaar tells his companion to hide three girls and they leave only the boy to his family.

Dylan is very small and skinny in the contrast of other kids of the same age no matter how much his mother fed him, he was bullied because of his figure, one he was trying to escape and lost .
It's a very captivating adventure story with fantastic evocative elements..

I think the character of Dylan felt a bit unrelatable, if it would be a bit witty it would be more convenient then.

Into The Vortex is an absolutely phenomenal read, and I have no doubt that the Dylan Dover series will become a global sensation!

After reading only a few pages, I was completely enthralled by this work of genius and could not put it down until I had finished it.

The author's exceptional talent is evident in every aspect of the novel, from its well-conceived plot to its engaging characters and vivid detail. It brings to life a richly imaginative and complex fantasy realm that readers will want to revisit again and again. And this is what I believe will help the series gain worldwide fame.
