He can see beyond the veil of death. And what he sees is terrifying…
Gray Brooks knows all about death. A retired Marine, he survived the horrors of war, only to waste his life in a series of drunken nights and misdemeanors. But all that changed the day he was shot in a robbery gone wrong. After being pronounced clinically dead, Gray returns to life in the hospital. And something inside him has changed…
Still tethered to the afterlife, Gray now sees the supernatural beings that stalk humanity. Demons, ghosts, and other creatures that defy logical explanation. And for once in his life, Gray is compelled to do the right thing—to defend innocent lives from the festering evil that plague them.
Joining forces with a practitioner of the occult, Gray sets out to fend off sinister beings. But sensing these hideous forces is one thing and killing them is quite another. And unless Gray can discover these creatures’ weaknesses in time, he may find himself returned to the shadowy realm of death.

First in a New Series from Scare Street!! The SOLDIER OF DEATH Series is thrillingly Paranormal/Supernatural/Cryptozoology, winningly imaginative and with a superb character ARC (and some fun dead folks too). I am so eager to read the next two in the Series.
Grady Brooks grew up in a bad Chicago neighborhood. An unhappy childhood was followed by time in the Marines, where this loner made friends and developed loyalty and skills that didn't translate to peacetime work. A stint as a "taxman" for a low-rent mob boss didn't improve life. Then he dies, attempting to intervene in a neighborhood armed robbery. But death is not the end....
This book is a good start to what could potentially be a terrific series. Gray Brooks survived war in Afghanistan, life on the mean streets of Chicago and a volatile job as a collector for a small time mobster only to be shot while trying to protect a shopkeeper friend during an armed robbery. He is DOA at the hospital but somehow revives. The thing is, he can see and speak to dead people, including his former sergeant who was killed in the war. Gray is pulled, often against his will, to put his newfound talents to good use by seeking out and killing supernatural monsters that are killing people. He joins forces with a woman who researches these monsters and she convinces him to change careers The book takes us through several monster killings. This is the one area where I thought a bit more detail would have made for a better story. This is a small thing overall and didn't warrant a lower rating. The final chapter opens the gate wide for the next book in the series. I look forward to that.
Written by the team of Kevin Saito and Ron Ripley. A nihilistic marine, working as a mobster, is killed trying to protect a shopkeeper from a robber. He wakes up in a much loved country and must decide wether to stay, or live. Everything else, as they say, is icing. This is a well written story and well edited (yay! Kudos!). The characters are likable, the action intense. A whole lot of short people (couldn’t help noticing). Passing mention is made of a certain hard drinking marine we all love, and an autistic boy that might seem familiar. Definitely give it a read.
After a brush with death, Gray learns that he has a bigger purpose in life. Coming face to face with a monster, he is able to kill it, but he is not sure what he saw, or if he believes what he saw.
Teaming up with Juniper, he is soon hunting different monsters, and he learns that he is pretty good with fighting these demonic presences. But there are some things that he may not be equipped to handle..
This was a fabulous read, and I was hooked from the start! Perfection!
I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading more in the series. Gray is a relatable character and his relationship with Reeves is entertaining. His relationship with Juniper is something I'll enjoy seeing unfold.
I really enjoy these characters, and the background on the monsters is fantastic. The book includes lots of action and lots of horror. It was a great read.
