Biomedical waste generated from healthcare related activities carries a risk potential of causing injuries and spreading infections. In India, about 1-2 kilograms of waste per bed is generated daily. According to Ministry of Environment and Forests, more than 4 lakh kilograms of biomedical waste is generated daily in India and approximately 30% is left untreated or not disposed properly. Mixing of these untreated/not properly disposed waste with non-hazardous waste has made problem worse. Governments all over the world have been forced to introduce legal restrains about biomedical waste management. Government of India has formulated biomedical waste management and handling rules in 1998, which came into effect from 1 January, 2003. These rules were revised and published in Gazette of India, Extraordinary, Part II, Section 3, Sub-section (i), Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change as a notification on 28 March, 2016. They were again amended in 2018 and 19th February, 2019.It has been observed that health care workers failed to cope up with these rules and frequent amendments. There is lot of ambiguity and confusion regarding these rules. This book is a humble attempt to simplify the rules and convey the intended message clearly to the audience.
