Different is a Plus
*****Spoilers*****
Oh Billie how she annoyed me. Sighs. Billie is a 30 year old Omega whose father had recently passed away when the book opens. The world she lives in a lot of times doesn't allow Omegas as many rights but their Alpha partners do and are often brutal and can beat or mistreat their Omegas. Alphas and Omegas can be from any class of paranormal or human, the Alphas being stronger but less numerous, however when Alphas and Omegas bond together, they're stronger collectively. Since Billie learned she was an Omega at 16, her father had been hiding her status with magic. With his death and Billie on her own with a pending heat cycle coming that will toss Alphas into their feelings, and she with them, it's imperative that she make a good choice as to her future. That she took so long and stubbornly refused to consider the Alphas felt so childish and like she was throwing a tantrum.
Billie's father chose an Alpha group for her before his death, but she refused to meet them because she was so set on being independent. Even though Omegas went into heat, her alternative was a facility set up specifically for Omegas where the Omega could choose to ride it out with some magical/medicinal help that didn't really do much, or allow a resident Alpha to relieve them. There's pheromones and talk of scenting, an Alpha being able to scent an Omega when they're close to the heat and yet Billie stubbornly stands on her independence leg. So frustrating just how recalcitrant she is when it comes to the men her father chose and this idea about how she's expected to be submissive without meeting an Alpha with the intent of joining with them for herself. To me, she was an annoying mix of I'm trying to be an Alpha and can do things myself, and I refuse to bow down to the restrictions that are Omegas. Made even more annoying by the fact that in the end she made the relationship what it needed to be. Duh.
Anyway, the guys are all different. My favorite was probably Ty the vampire because he's a good mix of sweet dominant. Kai is a demon and she meets him first when he invades her apartment to guard Billie after her father's death. Lance is the werewolf, apparently just this side of sane. Daniel is the fae, sophisticated, well dressed, and the leader of the group. We didn't get enough of the history of each man in this book, we only get a little teaser and the elephant in the room where their previous Omega was killed. It could've used a bit more in that respect.
There's zero grief for Billie's dead father that carries to the second chapter in this book. That Billie is a doctor was mentioned and then nothing since she takes time off to grieve then suddenly she's working, it felt kind of misplaced. Maybe had there been more talk about her job leading up to her return, it wouldn't have felt so sudden. I called it early as to the culprit for the demon kidnapping attempts on Billie and I didn't like what the author did with Anil's character at the end of the book. Yes, Anil was exactly the kind of Alpha that Billie didn't want but why the need to add a desire from him to make Billie his by force was poorly done I thought, especially since just prior we learn that he was being forced in his actions, didn't like the woman controlling him, and had healed Billie's injuries. Made no sense to me.
Overall, it was different and a page turner but felt it could've been drawn out a little more and it would've been that much better. It needs more descriptions of the characters, better word choice, and to slow down but I thought it was decent, a 2.5.
